It's really amazing to see how much they've grown over the years from building out their headquarters, their refrigerated delivery vans, their delivery system that sends you text messages and you can track where your driver is and their ever evolving menu items. The concept is simple, check out their menu online , place your order by Wednesday for Sunday or Monday delivery; it'll depend on your location for which day they deliver to your area. For me, there's 2 of us so I usually order the 5 meal prep pack and then add on 1-2 breakfast items and/or a snack pack. I love bringing those to work for a mid-morning snack. You'll get an email the day before for an estimated delivery timeframe. We leave a cooler by our front door and our delivery guy will place it in there, take a photo and then send me a text message. Their delivery vans are a sleek black with a cute penguin chef as their logo. It's fun to spot them driving around. What I appreciate is that although the weekly rotation can get dull for some folks, MHP continues to bring new recipes and new menu items like the add-on breakfast items, premium menu items and now the snack packs.

This shop was just one street down from Ralphs and Vitality Tap so it was conveniently located. On Sunday afternoon, I noticed the space was open for business, so I popped in to check it out. It's a small spot with a staff member, a fridge full of pre-made meals, a little bar area with two stools, a cold water pitcher, and a microwave. The main business model is a weekly subscription, but I learned that the owner also keeps leftovers in the fridge for grab-and-go customers on Wednesdays and Sundays from 1:30-5 p.m. They also run a "buy 4 get 1 free" and "buy 8 get 2 free" promotion, which makes the meals an even better value. I assumed she makes an abundance and sells those for $10 a meal, but since I stopped by close to closing, I got mine for $5 each. I grabbed two to try because the meals looked very nutrition-focused and considering I ate basically garbage throughout Comic Con it was a smart choice to fuel up with real food. I tried a Mediterranean chicken over yellow rice and zucchini, as well as a ground hamburger-style sloppy joe-type meal. The food definitely leans healthy, and considering how inconvenient it is to eat well at SDCC, this was a great find. The menu includes the option to choose two snacks which can be substituted for one meal. If you need to make any modifications to your meal (i.e. exclude mashed potatoes for extra veggies), all you need to do is provide dietary needs in a field on the Google form, and if there are any questions, you can handle everything through text. There are checkboxes on the Google form for keto and paleo options. For the convenience of food prep and to support locally, I've been happy with Viva Foods.
