I had two kids in their toddler room for 6 months, and then I pulled them out after being fed up. Now, after putting my kids in a different daycare I can see clearly how bad it was at Kindercare, I am still dealing with guilt that I didn't I pull them out sooner. Here is the good and the bad I experienced at this center. Good: - The outdoor space is big and beautiful with tons of toys to play with. - Teachers were really good at changing diapers quickly and my kids never got diaper rashes while there. - The front desk was always welcoming and greeted us with a smile. - There was always someone picking up the phone and they were always open to go check on your kid right away if you asked them. - They are not cheap but they have a good discount for intel or ohsu employees and they offer sibling discounts too. - They use a pretty nice app that informs you of the diaper changes, food consumption and photos shared. You can also message teachers and director via this app. - They have excellent hours that secure care for your little one even when you have a long day at work. Bad: - Generally the teachers were not engaging or showing much interest or affection to the kids. They were mostly standing around passively and often talking amongst themselves instead of the children. Sometimes kids would be wailing in the corner and no one would pay any attention to them. I witnessed this regardless of the time that I stopped by to pick up kids, or drop off anything for them. - The toddler classrooms are tiny! They have sectioned a big room into 3 little rooms that probably barely meet the min square footage per child. The rooms are always crowded and in a disarray with toys laying everywhere. They don't teach the kids to clean up and there were always (dirty) toys spread around on the floor that you would step on as you dropped off and picked up your kids. - the food is DISGUSTING. Don't be fooled by the menus they may show you. It may look good on paper, but first of all, the food served almost never matches what is printed on the menu for that day. "Fresh fruit" comes out of a can! Cheese and meat is processed. Bread is stale and white. Nothing is truly cooked there. It's all just thawed and/or warmed. I wouldn't eat any of that myself. - The kids were taken to play outdoors twice a day during summer, but even though we had a very mild fall and winter, but they did not take the kids out a single day from Oct to Feb. And after parents called to complain they took them out only occasionally when the weather was very nice. Their excuse was that some kids do not have warm clothes?! They kept the kids in the tiny tiny classrooms crawling around all day, and my boys would get horribly sick every other week. - They constantly move the kids around among toddler classes. We would always drop off our kids around the same time, within the allowed drop off time and around breakfast time and in their designated classrooms, but they would already be at capacity in that room and have to move some of the kids out to accommodate our kids. Sometimes they would take kids that were in the middle of eating their breakfast and have them walk to another room. It was always chaos and a lot of teacher/student switching once we arrived. - I had a kid that drooled a lot and I would give them extra bibs so they could change them out during the day, but despite asking a couple of times and sometimes even messaging about it they would forget and on his drooly days my kid would often go home in a wet shirt (with dry and clean bibs sitting in his cubby). -They had serious staffing issues and had to close their classrooms unannounced several days during fall and winter! Once they emailed us at 7am that they could only take 8 more toddlers that day, and first come first serve! Other days they would ask us to pick up our kids earlier due to staff being out. - There were also a lot of little less important, but annoying, things as well such as not removing the kids shoes for nap time, not being stocked with age-appropriate educational toys like legos, building blocks etc., not allowing food from home, they would play super loud music non stop in the evening, they tossed all the water bottles in a cubby all week and never changed the water or cleaned the bottles until parents pick them up at the end of week and clean them, they would not provide water to the kids during the day only at specific times (my kids were sooo thirsty when we picked them up because they couldn't speak and ask for water or they did and were ignored). All in all, while there are a few positives, I would never recommend this place to anyone who wants the best for their child. I have even heard teachers working at that center discouraging parents from putting their children there! That should be telling enough...

I have had three children now be with Kindercare, starting as infant through PreK. Knwing my child is safe and growing in their exploration of the world allow me to work without worry and be completely present with them when home. Communication about programming and our children is above what I could have hoped. Now that some kids have started older school, I have greater and greater appreciation for kindercare. She made so many friends and we saw huge leaps in her speech and social skills. They also learn so many fun things and she would come home and sings songs about the planets, water cycle, a trees life cycles, continents, states and more. It was so fun watching her learn. This summer we gave Northwest Fencing Center a try and for one son it was the highlight of his summer. He is my renaissance kid and wanted to spend his entire summer riding horses, acting, learning archery, fencing and attending Renaissance Faires. If there were a camp where you could build your own set of armor, he would have been first in line. The staff were nice and the camp was for a variety of ages. When I would arrive a few minutes early for the pick-up, all the kids would be playing a form of team tag, but following the fencing rules they learned earlier in the day. Even though they all wore fencing gear and masks, I could always pick out my son because of his enthusiasm and he would yell, "Huzzah" every time he bested an opponent. The only negatives are that this was a half day camp. As a working parent, I would have preferred longer hours. Also, their facility is geographically undesirable for our family. Convenient for many since it is just a few minutes off 217, but doing two round trips a day (especially during the morning commute hours) from my area were a drag. This is also the only reason why he isn't taking classes this fall. Fencing is a bit of a hot sport in our area, especially during the summer Olympic years since we have several competitors that train and teach in our area. Definitely more interesting and more active than making a clay ashtray.

(We have tried them all.) She has finally found her tribe, and I cannot recommend this center and the coaches highly enough. NW Fencing Center has been home to world class fencers for decades, and the coaches are some of the best in the country. More importantly, they also happen to be decent, caring, principled humans, who have experience in working with kids and adults of all ages. They have gone out of their way to help my awkward, left-handed tween gain self-esteem; learn to maintain composure, and persevere with courage under pressure. It has truly been a life changing sport for her. On a whim, I signed up for the adult epee classes as a way to decompress during the pandemic and I have come to love it so much! I've met interesting, fun people from all ages and backgrounds during my classes. It has been a great experience for our family! The center supplies all the gear for beginner fencers, so you can try it out before committing. Come and check it out; it may just be the best thing you do all year!

It is not shiny. But you know what? Our kids love it. It's comfortable and homey and clean. I feel good when I leave my kids. The outside play is awesome. They have a huge covered spot for the kids to run around and play even when it's raining (and it does that from time to time here in Oregon!). I love that my kids come back and have learned new songs or poems. My 4-year old can write her name and my 2-year old knows the months of the year! They provide lots of activities, so the kids almost always have something to look forward to. Picnic days, bouncehouse, clowns, picture day, reptile man, Tumblebus, Soccer Shots... it's so much fun! The location can't be beat (tucked away) and it doesn't feel like an institution. They allow the kids to get messy (my kids play HARD at this school, which means great bedtime!) and are always doing cool/fun artwork. Not a preschool, as they claim…read more The only pro- It's a convenient location for us and the facility is in a great neighborhood with lots of playgrounds for the kids. On the exterior, it looks clean, well kept, and located on a spacious lot. The staff there is relatively friendly and seem to be interactive with the kids. Not sure if our negative experiences are due to the management but I wish I could give more positive feedback. We took our child there for over two years and its been an "ok to negative" experience. There have been a few incidents that have made us question why we didn't switch day cares sooner. When my husband or I would pick up our child, we both agreed, that the environment felt dirty. Whether it be sticky floors, stained walls and/or surfaces, or fowl smells, we stop to think about the germs that must be circulating. Our son was constantly sick, including hand foot and mouth, on multiple occasions. The food that's served to the kids (only posted on a board unless asked for a copy every month) are horrible. I'm not sure that corn dogs are a healthiest option even if you're serving it with sugared fruit or canned veggies. Some daycares serve "quick serve foods" such as corn dogs, due to lack of equipment, but blue skies has no excuses. They have a fully equipped kitchen that is capable of cooking healthier food options. For the amount that they charge, they are hesitant to provide documents. When we have requested any additional items, such as a receipt for our monthly payment, we had to ask multiple times and then told by the manager that we have to keep asking until "squeaky wheel gets the grease". No thank you. As far as communication with your teacher..there is a chart posted on the classrooms for parents to look at at the end of the day. This chart shows whether or not your child napped or ate, with check marks, however more then half the time, it's not filled out. If I ask the teacher there at the end of the day if my child ate lunch or not, they say they don't know. Really?! When we pick up our child at the end of the day, our son is always filthy. We started a habit awhile ago of not touching anything at home until we wash hands. Sometimes we take a bath before dinner, it's so bad. Kids get dirty, We understand that, but It doesn't even seem like they wipe they're noses. During our time at blue skies, the director of the facility was never present and had no communication with us. We've never been asked for feedback for improvement or approached about how our experience is with the staff or facility. We believe in some type of communication with the director of our child's preschool/daycare. Blue skies is horrible, in our opinion. I would ask what matters most to you, a nice outdoor facility or having your child engaged and lead to their highest potential. Last but not least, If you'd like your child to be included and treated like their peers, I suggest looking elsewhere. The staff is not motivated to engage and redirect children who may need extra guidance.
