We had a great visit to Flippin Cow. The service was great, the food was excellent, the atmosphere was relaxed and the location on the lake was a highlight. It was one of the better restaurant experiences that we've had recently. Located a mile north of the Indiana Toll Road, we found this place based on a search knowing this area was where we wanted to stop for dinner on our traverse to Chicago. It looked like a fun spot from the description and was certainly something different. An additional consideration was that we had our 21-month-old granddaughter and needed a place where we could so find something that appealed to her. Burgers are usually a good bet. The location on Simonton Lake was beautiful. It facilitated a treat before we ever stepped into the restaurant. There was a family of swans on the water with the parents and their six cygnets. They were indeed fun to watch. The lake created a wonderful setting from the outset. Upon entry, we were greeted by the friendly staff and were accommodated with a booth in the main dining room quickly. Our waitress, Kayla, attended to us right away and did a terrific job. We were well cared for during our visit. The food was delivered in a timely fashion without undue delay. We started with an order of Onion Rings, which turned out to be a great choice. They were crispy with flavorful breading that was not so thick as to be overwhelming. We also tried a couple of cocktails. While we like a glass of wine with our meal, we're not really cocktail people. But these intrigued us. I tried the Peach Sangria, which was very good. My wife had the Jameson Ginger Sparkler. Jameson and Ginger Ale has been a favorite of hers since we experienced the Jameson Factory tour in Dublin several years ago. This concoction was a nice take on that theme. Both drinks were "dangerous" because they were so tasty that you didn't notice they contained alcohol. In spite of the fact that this is primarily a burger pub, we found two salads that intrigued us for our mains. One was actually in keeping with the theme of the restaurant, as my wife had the Flippin Burger Salad. As the name suggests, it featured burger on greens with her choice of honey mustard dressing. She shared that with our granddaughter. They were both happy with the choice. I had the Flippin Whitefish Salad. The fish was nicely done and it seemed appropriate since we were by the lakeshore. I found it to be quite satisfying with the raspberry vinaigrette dressing. Unfortunately, they no longer make their Mango Chardonnay Dressing that used to accompany this salad. I've never had the chance to try it but it sounds like they should consider bringing it back. The total for our meals with food, drinks, tax and tip was $68. At $34 each as well as having enough to feed a toddler, we were very happy with this given the experience. We'll look forward to a return visit now that we know this place is there. read more

We are visiting Elkhart on Business and pleasure . This is the first place we went for a bite since we wanted a burger . Hands down the best burger I have had in a long long time . I ordered the Stella Moo and it was perfect . We also got the bacon cheddar dip is what our server (Hannah) recommended and it was 10/10. Labor Day almost nothing in Shipshewana or Elkhart is open other than chain restaurants but Sue at the Hilton tapestry Hotel in Elkhart found this restaurant open called the Flippin cow so we went to try it. It was a unique looking place on the water. I don't know what water what lake or what river but it was on the water And it was very, very different looking. If you looked around at the decor was everything from the Bob slide on the wall to a boat to a bicycle hanging from the ceiling and all types of other stuff to look at and money was hanging from the ceiling all over the table. Tops were very unusual. One was made out of pennies one was made out of bottle caps, and one was made out of yardsticks. I have pictures of them which I'll try to attach to this we ordered pretzel bites for an appetizer, and my wife ordered a salad with an unusual fish, white fish in it and I ordered a burger on a plate covered with grilled onions and a side of chips which they make there. The parking lot is very poorly designed. I had a minor incident there that caused over $2,000 in damage to my vehicle, and the owner refused to offer any compensation. Their back lot is extremely small, with only one narrow entry/exit. The only way to leave is to back out or attempt a difficult turnaround while all the other cars are parked facing inward. Even the owner admitted the layout was poor but was unwilling to work with me. I will never return and strongly advise others not to park in the back lot unless they're prepared to risk damage to their vehicle. Yesterday, while driving back to Chicago from Cleveland, we decided to grab lunch somewhere local without making a big detour. We found a spot called Flippin' Cow, which had nearly 5,000 reviews averaging 4.8 stars -- so we figured it had to be good. When we arrived, it was immediately clear this was a place for locals. As soon as we walked in, we could feel the stares -- like people were wondering, "What are they doing here?" It was uncomfortable, but we brushed it off and just wanted to eat. There were two seating areas -- one with A/C and another with just two fans. It was an extremely hot and humid day, and unfortunately we were seated in the hot section. We placed a simple order: two burgers and a half-size mac & cheese for our son. The large table next to us (about 20 people) ordered just before us, so we expected our food shortly after theirs. But after waiting 30 minutes, with no food and no communication, my wife politely asked our server for an update. She said, "It's ready -- I'll go get it." Another 15 minutes passed with nothing. I asked again, and she said she'd check on it. Still nothing. Another 5 minutes later, we saw her bringing drinks to another table -- not our food. At that point, in the sweltering heat, with a hungry and uncomfortable family, I told her we no longer wanted the food and were leaving. She looked at me and just said "I'm sorry" -- then turned away and walked off. The entire time we were there, we felt out of place and unwelcome. People kept looking at us like we didn't belong. We were shown no respect, and our experience was completely ignored. If you're not a local -- don't go to this place. You won't be treated the same. First things first... the ONLY sauce they had that wasn't gluten-free was the Teriyaki, and the only interesting burger I could eat that wasn't just a normal run-of-the-mill burger was the Maui... featuring, you guessed it, the Teriyaki glaze. It's nice they have gluten-free buns, but it's not hard to find GF Teriyaki so that's a point taken off in my book... Hubs' sandwich looked AMAZING. The gluten-free bun I got was one of those tasteless white rice buns. Honestly the burger would've been delicious in a lettuce wrap! I also wasn't feeling like having broccoli or coleslaw, so no sides for me. The grilled pineapple on my burger was mostly tasteless and a bit dried out... which I expect some of that just from being grilled, but this was definitely either an unripe pineapple they used or something else. It had a slight pineapple taste... since I couldn't have the Teriyaki glaze the burger would've been much better if the pineapple was juicy & fresh. The staff... they were hilarious. The gal we got was obviously also the bartender (she said that was her favorite role) and she was playful, fun, energetic & really made the whole experience. It seemed the guys at the table next to us knew her because they kept giving her a hard time, but I'm not totally sure that was the case. She was attentive and hard-working. The murals, lake-themed decor (it's on a lake after all), the dollar bills stuck all over the place with people's personal notes, and the fun looking game along the back with posted rules made this place super fun to eat at... Some tables even had a wooden cow you could "flip" or play with just for the fun of it.
