Was in the area with some friends and stopped by for lunch! The place is very clean and the server was very nice! 3 of us got wings with sides and I was told they were delicious and the Macaroni and Cheese was really good! I got the lunch special with pulled pork, smoked chicken, along with the smoke potatoes and a chunk of cornbread. The cornbread was sweet and delicious! The house sweet BBQ is really good too! The smoked potatoes were cooked beautifully but had no flavor or smoke taste. The pulled pork was very dry especially on the ends as if it was microwaved but with some sauce was okay. The smoked chicken though tasted just like smoke and the texture was very off almost like a microwave rewarm as well. Our server was super nice about it though when I mentioned it. Are you into Smokin' Fattys? That can mean so many things, but if you find yourself in Elkhart, IN, BBQ sounds like it would hit the spot... and it did. The Sampler was pretty good with excellent ribs, amazing chicken wings, fatty (a bit too much) pork belly and decent brisket served with your choice of sides (I got beans and slaw) and some type of jalapeño hush puppy thing (I think). Good stuff, but I wish I could build my own sampler as having both ribs and pork belly was a bit much. I wish they had a spicy BBQ sauce that wasn't mango. I'm not a fruity bbq guy so that just didn't do it for me. The other sauces were good though and I like they had more than one from which to choose. Service was pretty good and I was in and out fairly quickly, which was good as I was tired from traveling all day. Choices are kind of limited in the area, but this was a good choice and if I was back in the area, I'd go back here. read more

I stopped in while passing through Elkhart. Grabbed a seat at the bar. The BBQ is very good, I had the brisket. Service is good. The reason for the lower rating is that for some reason, even when pointed out by me and other customers, they were playing the same song on repeat the entire time I was in there. Completely annoying and really took away from the experience. When I mentioned it, they laughed and said they were too busy working to notice. In fairness, probably a one time issue? I came in to Smoking Fatty's with my family back in July for my birthday and ordered myself a pound of brisket--both lean and fatty cuts. I've been smoking meats myself for well over a decade, so I was honestly pretty disappointed by what I got. The brisket had clearly been rewarmed in some kind of liquid that tasted heavily of liquid smoke. There was no rendered fat or tallow on the surface--just a watery "broth" that left the meat bland. The bark was decent, but it got soft from sitting in the liquid. The flat wasn't tough, but definitely wasn't tender either. It needed more time on the smoker to break down the collagen. The real issue was with the point slices. What I got had nearly ¾ inch of solid fat left on it--should've been trimmed better--and it was sliced way too thin, thinner than a wood pencil. That cut should be served thick to showcase the richness, not shaved like deli meat. I'm not the type to normally complain to my waitress, but she cleared nearly half a pound of brisket off my plate without asking a single question, which surprised me. I know stuff happens and not every cook is perfect. But this was pretty bad for a bbq joint owned by a company with multiple restaurants here in Elkhart. read more

Stopped by for dinner on a Saturday night in January. We called ahead to reserve a booth, which was a good idea as the place was pretty busy by the time we got there about 6:30pm. We appreciated the glass panels between the bar area and high walls between booths which made it easier to hear each other. The table was clean and comfortable. The place has several TV screens displaying sports games. We ordered the smokehouse combo, smoked chicken wings, and a couple extra sides. The smoked chicken wings arrived hot and crispy. They are smoked first and then flash fried which made the skins nice and crispy. They came with a ranch sauce, but we asked for their Alabama white sauce instead. The Alabama white sauce was a little different than we've had at other places, as it was a bit on the spicy side, which we loved! If you order the smoked chicken wings, be sure to ask for the Alabama white! The smokehouse combo came with ribs, pulled pork, brisket, pork belly and jalapeno corn bread. The ribs were perfectly cooked and came with a sweet glaze. They were sweet, tender, and delicious. The pulled pork was tender and was best mixed with a bit of their coleslaw and some of the white bread that comes with it. The pork belly was a nice surprise, as it was tender and had some great bark. The brisket was ok, but not my thing. For our side items, we ordered the coleslaw, campfire beans, elote corn and something called Gigi Sue's cabbage. The coleslaw was wonderful, perfect combination of sweet and tangy. The campfire beans were just sweet enough, and the elote corn was amazing. The wild card was Gigi Sue's cabbage, which was interesting for something different. It tasted just shy of sauerkraut, and the bits of bacon helped keep it reigned in. The bottom line is that this place has some real serious barbecue, great sides and wonderful service. Got 2 sauces sweet and mango habanero. Both were good. Mango habanero is not hot so anyone can try it. Sides were cold and very mediocre. Fries were wilty and cold. Cabbage was barely warm and had no real flavor. Best thing was the wings. Healthy crowd when I picked up my food. Decent looking bar. Bartenders were hopping around and were busy. Very nice and friendly. In town for business. Staying at one of the hotels and wanted to eat something easy with good reviews. Just OK. Here is a big thing. Ate dinner here recently. We sat in the bar area in a booth. We shared the 1/2 lb of pull pork, elote corn, and fries plus my husband had the chili. All of it was good but I should have looked up the word elote. It means chili powder! If it had been any spicer, I could not have eaten it. The fries were only ok. Swung by when I was in town and decided wind inside was pretty busy, with a 30min wait, I'd just order online via the Smokin' Fattys BBQ website l. The ordering process was quick and easy. Very reasonably priced meals! And estimated time ready was 15 min. Upon pick up, (10min before expected) I went through the takeout door as described in the order, and was immediately greeted by a staff member who checked on my order. During the 1 min I stood there waiting, another staff member came to see if I had been helped. When the first staff member came back, she had my meal all ready to go, and was very host like as I asked for some let up & silverware. I LOVE FRIENDLY SERVICE, and PROMPT ORDERS! If there is a reason to stop in Elkhart Indiana, you MUST stop here. We enjoyed a well fashioned cocktail -followed by the sampler platter. The selection of ribs, pork belly, pulled pork and brisket, along with perfectly spiced hushpuppies (with honey sriracha butter!), speciality corn, beans and potatoes was enough for two of us and a hearty doggy bag. Each dish was perfectly spiced and richly smoked. We chatted with locals who had only raves for this special destination- they recommended the trashcan nachos, brisket & cheese sandwich, cheese curds...then we heard about the desserts. Not something we typically order, we chose the carrot cake to take to the hotel. This was the most moist, perfectly spiced and ideally frosted carrot cake offered, we were a little sad when it was gone. Our bar neighbor had the banana pudding which could have been an awesome alternative from the look of it. Next to us was Janis Joplin and behind us, Queen. We ordered the garlic cheese curds which were fried perfectly and had a great flavor. Hubby's white cheddar mac was amazing! I ordered the brisket dipper. Equally as delicious. One friend got pulled pork and said it was good but it came plain (no sauce). Other friend got the We Be Jammin' which somehow combines burger, bacon jam and peanut butter!?!? Despite skepticism, he said it worked well together. Abby was our server and even at 1 hour before close still had a great attitude. Everything came out hot, fresh and quickly.
