    Tartare

If you were to tell me this restaurant existed and served this kind of food in the State College area, I wouldn't believe. I'd have to see and taste myself. But it's true. It does exist and it's even better than how one might imagine based on the menu. We were warmly welcomed and sat right away despite being a little early. We were at a table that was kind of awkwardly blocking a doorway and my friend had to keep moving when people went through. No big deal. Maybe just not the best spot for a table (maybe turn it sideways). Our server was amazing. So friendly and knowledgeable. Drinks - I had a grapefruit spritz mocktail and my friend had a red that he really liked. To start, we had the charcuterie and the tartare. Both excellent. The tartare was so fresh and light with a little pop of spice. I had the trout and my friend had the short rib gnocchi. I was so jealous of his glutinous gnocchi but the trout was excellent. I'm not a bean person but the beans were so flavorful I could not help but to eat them. And then there was dessert. The affogato was perfect. There were a few ice cream flavors to choose from and we selected butterscotch. Highly recommend. The semifreddo. Don't let the garlic scare you. It blends well with the rich chocolate and the bright, juicy pomegranate. Try it! It's like nothing I've ever tasted before. Our server let us know they have brunch which will definitely be happening in the near future. Overall, the most perfect dinner from start to finish.

    Pine cones.

I was in the area for acceptance student day at Penn St. and wanted to get away from the buzz of the campus. My daughter and I researched the area on our drive from NH. We were amazed. I will be back every trip to see her. Had the Moroccan spiced ribeye, octopus and cheese board with pine cones (taste like Christmas) and all. Our server was awesome sorry forgot his name. We didn't have reservations and they were very accommodating. I would recommend making a reservation. Thank you!

Overall, this place was great and would definitely come back!! We got the PLT, the baklava waffle, and the farmers plate and all 3 were delicious. The baklava waffle was creative and fruity. It was a little too sweet though. The PLT was the star and the garlic aioli really shone through. The homemade sausage on the farmers plate was as divine. The eggs and the toast were solid but nothing super special. Would get all again. They brought housemade hot sauce which was good too but unfortunately an $2 extra charge we weren't informed of which is why I docked a star. There's also a 3% credit card surcharge. We ate outside today because the weather was nice and it was gorgeous. Inside, the tables have mini arrangements and the vibe seems quiet and nice. Service was good. We had plenty of water.

The seasonal salad, which we shared, was just okay.

Flour & Stone does not have the personality of its sister restaurant, Pine Grove Hall, located next door. There's not a lot of warmth and decor, and because we were seated in a small room next to a large, loud party, that took away from any ambience the restaurant may have. We started with a seasonal salad with crispy pancetta and champagne vinaigrette which was fine but nothing spectacular. My husband liked the sausage rigatoni with the whipped miso ricotta, and I enjoyed the goat cheese ravioli although the addition of the oregano-focaccia bread crumbs was unnecessary and made it a bit too heavy and filling. Next time, we'll head next door.

In my opinion, the best brunch in the State college area. Food is excellent. Wait staff is super and ambience is outstanding.

We had arrange for a graduation dinner here at 8:30 pm for 8 people. Shortly before we headed to the restaurant they called to make sure we were still coming we I thought was odd. This is where they could have righted a wrong by telling us they were very low on entrees and give us the option to decide to go somewhere else. 4 of the 6 dinner entrees weren't available, mashed potatoes were out. Most of the appetizers were also out. We ended up getting the last 4 small empanadas, 2 pretzels and 2 salads then decided to leave it was 9:30 pm by this time. We ended up at McDonalds yay. They did tried to work with us but it wasn't going to work for us. The bartender was snooty I won't get into that. The food is pricey and what we ate wasn't spectacular. They may have been off that night but again they could have gave us a heads up when they check in with us a hour before we arrived. Graduations dinner ruined.

It was a boiled chicken leg and thigh with white rice, a few olives, and some water cress - flavorless and not very good at all. No potatoes, zero flavor, and definitely not worth the price. No where close to the description on the menu. My son wanted the beef short ribs but they were sold out. He settled for the smoked duck wrap and fries - bang average. My wife got the catfish - she liked it. You want to support local establishments but this was a miss. If you're offering a limited menu then have what's on the menu. Three entrees, two appetizers, two beers, a glass of wine and a soda for $230. Disappointing!

The recent menu has a great diversity of options ranging from salads, sandwiches, and entrees. The broth had rich flavor and the right amount of spice, not enough to burn your mouth, but warm it up and tingle your lips. The beef was tender and cooked to perfection. It hit the spot on a chilly winter night. If you find yourself in the gap and looking for spot to grab a good hearty bite to eat and drink, the Red Horse is your spot!

B I G Vibe Small Bar Bit Noisy…read more We stopped in Local Whiskey during our stay in lovely State College PA. Our local friends recommended the sister bar/restaurants (Local Whiskey and Central Reservation) and we were glad they did. We enjoyed delicious craft cocktails professionally made by the bar staff and enjoyed a delicious Strawberry salad. Bar had pos decor with great tile work - we felt like we were in NYC. We had a great happy hour at Local Whiskey because the staff was polite and professional. We did find the decibel level in the bar extreme. My wife's smart watch gave her (a first ever) decibel warning. Unfortunately it was so loud she and I could not have a conversation so we left.

I don't drink alcohol so I can't speak to their bar or other food. 5/5 Food: where to start with the burger- its thick patty has a great crisp outside and medium inside and is graced by nicely cooked bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and a proper amount of sauce. The fries are classic, semi mush-semi crisp fries with coarse grained salt. The meal with a delicious burger that outdoes any other I've had in state college, even those that cost close to $20. Walking out the door, the meal (fries, burger, drink) cost 8.05, and I was happy to leave a larger than 20% tip to make it $10 even. I challenge you to find a better burger in state college, regardless of price. Honestly, my MBA-trained senses obsessed over what their business model might be and I'm hoping that it was providing enough for the owners and staff. 3.5/5 Service: Friendly. It was really busy when we were there and it was a tad slow, but we also had a group that came in at different times. 4/5 Ambiance: nice-ish college bar inside, clean bathrooms. Only complaint is that the booth table was too tall for the chairs, I felt like I would have been better suited to kneel to eat my burger than sit (I had one friend who did kneel to meet the height of the table) Tl;DR Excellent burger; confusingly great value.
