If you were to tell me this restaurant existed and served this kind of food in the State College area, I wouldn't believe. I'd have to see and taste myself. But it's true. It does exist and it's even better than how one might imagine based on the menu. We were warmly welcomed and sat right away despite being a little early. We were at a table that was kind of awkwardly blocking a doorway and my friend had to keep moving when people went through. No big deal. Maybe just not the best spot for a table (maybe turn it sideways). Our server was amazing. So friendly and knowledgeable. Drinks - I had a grapefruit spritz mocktail and my friend had a red that he really liked. To start, we had the charcuterie and the tartare. Both excellent. The tartare was so fresh and light with a little pop of spice. I had the trout and my friend had the short rib gnocchi. I was so jealous of his glutinous gnocchi but the trout was excellent. I'm not a bean person but the beans were so flavorful I could not help but to eat them. And then there was dessert. The affogato was perfect. There were a few ice cream flavors to choose from and we selected butterscotch. Highly recommend. The semifreddo. Don't let the garlic scare you. It blends well with the rich chocolate and the bright, juicy pomegranate. Try it! It's like nothing I've ever tasted before. Had a wonderful dinner at Flour & Stone! The service was great and the food was excellent. We had the seared octopus app - sooo good. For dinner we had the short rib gnocchi and it was the best gnocchi I've had in a while. Saving room for dessert was worth it because we had a cheesecake with strawberry and rhubarb topping that was fantastic! I was in the area for acceptance student day at Penn St. and wanted to get away from the buzz of the campus. My daughter and I researched the area on our drive from NH. We were amazed. I will be back every trip to see her. Had the Moroccan spiced ribeye, octopus and cheese board with pine cones (taste like Christmas) and all. Our server was awesome sorry forgot his name. This was our second visit to Flour & Stone; the first was for lunch, where we dined Alfresco during a pleasant summer day. This time, we reserved a table for dinner. Our guests had previously declared Flour & Stone one of their favorite restaurants. We were greeted cordially and seated at a small table near a hallway. During the course of the evening, we did feel an occasional draft of cool air-perhaps from the opening of an exterior door. The ambiance of the restaurant's interior is intimate, due partly to the low ceilings in our dining space. Our server brought menus and returned before long to take our drink orders. We ordered a limonata, a glass of Cantina castiadas vermentino, a Negroni, and the Fall Monty. Everyone enjoyed their libations; we shared one appetizer, the meatballs with ricotta. The sauce and meatballs were under seasoned, a bit on the bland side, and I would have preferred of touch of heat. For the entrées, we chose pork belly, lamb pappardelle, short rib gnocchi, and autumn ravioli. All the dishes were pleasing to the eye. My wife was very pleased with her ravioli; she raved about the sauce. Unfortunately, she didn't save me a drop of sauce. My pork belly consisted of a large square of pork, tender and well cooked, but on the boring side of flavor. Part of my problem was the expectation for porchetta on the menu--a dish they only prepare occasionally. The portions at Flour & Stone are perfect--no leftovers across the board. The ambience is relaxing and the staff are friendly. We're grateful to F & S for offering some rustic Italian pasta dishes, as well eclectic offerings such as rabbit, paella, Moroccan steak, and vegetarian choices. Good ambiance and pleasant service, but food is not fine dining quality. I had the Lamb Bolognese. Devoid of salt, overly sweet, hardly any meat, and the noodles were tough and the dish was served lukewarm. Honestly the sauce tasted like public school cafeteria tomato sauce. No depth of flavor, just sweet. Some freshly grated parm would have helped, but none offered. From a fine dining standpoint, they are faking it and have work to do. If you want pasta, go to an Olive Garden. You'll save tons of money and you'll get a solid pasta dish. read more

Overall, this place was great and would definitely come back!! We got the PLT, the baklava waffle, and the farmers plate and all 3 were delicious. The baklava waffle was creative and fruity. It was a little too sweet though. The PLT was the star and the garlic aioli really shone through. The homemade sausage on the farmers plate was as divine. The eggs and the toast were solid but nothing super special. Would get all again. They brought housemade hot sauce which was good too but unfortunately an $2 extra charge we weren't informed of which is why I docked a star. There's also a 3% credit card surcharge. We ate outside today because the weather was nice and it was gorgeous. Inside, the tables have mini arrangements and the vibe seems quiet and nice. Service was good. Flour & Stone does not have the personality of its sister restaurant, Pine Grove Hall, located next door. There's not a lot of warmth and decor, and because we were seated in a small room next to a large, loud party, that took away from any ambience the restaurant may have. We started with a seasonal salad with crispy pancetta and champagne vinaigrette which was fine but nothing spectacular. My husband liked the sausage rigatoni with the whipped miso ricotta, and I enjoyed the goat cheese ravioli although the addition of the oregano-focaccia bread crumbs was unnecessary and made it a bit too heavy and filling. Service was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. The atmosphere is great--busy with the buzz of conversation, but intimate, too. And the food was delicious. The fried whitebait appetizer is a must try, and I had the short rib gnocchi which was perfectly prepared and so tasty. The drinks tend towards classics and they were excellent. Pine Grove Hall, the sister restaurant, was always our favorite spot for special occasions. We finally got to check out Flour & Stone for our anniversary, and it did not disappoint!! Our server and the service in general was spectacular (rare around State College these days), food was superb, drinks were delightful and dessert was pleasant! We were happy that although the restaurant was busy, the seating still felt private and intimate. I've gotten items from the walk up window and had dinner here. The servers are very nice. The first time I went to the walk up window they were busy inside so it took about 20 min to receive my order and they were out of a couple menu items. The employee notified me ahead of time it would be a bit of a wait for food and even gave me a free scoop of ice cream to try while I waited. I wasn't in a hurry that day so it was fine. The food was good, but my husband wasn't a fan of how thick the Caesar dressing was. I liked my sandwich so much I went back a couple weekends later to grab one for lunch. It's on the other side of town for us so a bit of a drive so I was bummed when I got there only to be told since it was graduation weekend they weren't doing food at the pick up window. We also went for an anniversary dinner. The food was good, unfortunately about 10 min after I'd ordered the chicken they informed me they were out. The menu is small so that was really the only thing I wanted when we checked the menu before going so I had to just pick something else I wasn't really in the mood for. Overall I'm a fan, but there are some little things that still need worked out to up the rating. At this point I would stick to the walk up window and anticipate trying their breakfast soon. read more
