I heard of the name of Flour many years ago when we were still doing the run of the town thing in the weekends. W and D kept taking with a lot enthusiasm about this little gem called Flour near their sacred MIT that serves the best sticky buns. While I was often in and off during their MIT tales (I was not sure if they sometimes intentionally exaggerated or spiced things up for my sake as I missed out the entire MIT craze or to make themselves more interesting to each other), Flour made a dent due to the frequency of its appearance in their conversations. ;) This was a long beginning, unrelated, which made me feel like an old soul. I came back to erase a shadow. I still shake a little when I walked into the Peet's on Mt Auburn or Cafe Sushi. Then I ran into a Flour, two blocks from my studio. Spread of baked goods, pecan berry buns, and toasted sweet potato sandwich (they can be ordered in half and grilled at a little extra), ceiling to floor windows facing the street, neat and bright. This week Cambridge was extremely gentle, warm in good mood and humor. My memory went to that fall when a kid came to this land with many stupid heavy luggages and an American dream. This place is super close to my office so I go here all the time. It's crowded most of the time due to the large amount of businesses/students in the area, but the line moves quickly and the service is good. I've had their shaved lamb sandwich turned into a salad - it was great, and definitely filling. Their hot coffee and iced coffee, which is what I usually get, is also good and better than Starbucks IMO. Overall, a good stop for lunch, breakfast, pastries, or coffee! read more

One of the best pastry shop in Cambridge. It was another warm and gorgeous fall day in Massachusetts. My significant other and I decided to have a walk at Harvard Square. We walked by Flour Bakery and Café, and saw a big line inside. As most people would do in situation like that one, we got curious and we have decided to check it out. It was first time for both of us. I am a HUGE sweets person. I can eat cakes for breakfast and dinner. While staring at the display stand, two pastries caught my attention was the Triple chocolate mouse cake made with milk, dark, and white chocolate mousse in between flourless chocolate cake layers, and the Boston Cream pie which has sponge cake, vanilla cream, coffee syrup, and chocolate ganache. I first came across Flour Bakery's signature sticky buns on a YouTube Eater video, and it was further cemented that I must make a visit when it was also recommended by friends. The sticky bun is like a cinnamon bun with a delicious goopy and nutty coating on top. So good!! It definitely lived up to the hype, and I thoroughly enjoyed every bite. A fair warning, the sticky bun is quite rich and heavy, and so I wouldn't recommend having anything else in the same sitting haha. (I was quite tempted though, with the selection of other treats!) Also fun fact, the founder of Flour Bakery is a Harvard alumna, who studied math and econ before completely switching directions to pursue her passion for baking! That is super cool - it takes a lot of confidence and courage to pivot so drastically and take that risk to follow your dreams. A great bakery located in the heart of Harvard Square! This place is always bustling with people even right when they open. I had their famous sticky bun and a mulled apple cider, which proved to be a perfect breakfast to start off a long day. It's a great place to sit and get work done if you like having the white noise of lots of conversations of people around you. I got there a few minutes after they opened and was surprised to see how many people have already ordered and were enjoying their beverages and food. By the time I left, mid-morning, there was a long line waiting to order, so it was getting pretty hectic. One of the areas more popular spots, this place offers a wide selection of pastries, drinks,and food. At first glance everything seems so appetizing, grand, and spectacular. Sometimes it just doesnt translate to the flavor. I ordered a bread pudding that looked so delicious but when I recieved it, it really didnt taste like anything but wet bread. Very disappointed in the double crust apple pie that I ordered to bring for Thanksgiving the other day. My experiences have always been positive regarding the Flour Bakery. I think the pastries are delicious, but this pie was terrible! The crust was thick and tasteless - the apples were just ok. It's as if it were stale though I just had ordered it. We ended up throwing the leftovers away! So sorry to leave this bad review but the pie cost over $30 and I expected it to be of quality. We would have been better off getting a pre-boxed pie from Whole Foods. read more

Flour Bakery has some of the best pastries and bread that I've ever eaten. Their classic sticky bun always hits the spot when I'm craving a sweet pastry that isn't a cannoli or lobster tail. I tried their Cuban sandwich for lunch and it was delicious. Although sandwiches aren't exactly the hardest food to make, this one was cooked to perfection. Full disclosure, I worked here a few years ago. And my experience has made me appreciate the food and service at Flour more rather than turn me off from it. I believe Joanne and her team care about the quality of food and the customer's experience overall, and the staff work hard, try to be attentive, and keep themselves busy since there's always lots to be done even when there aren't many guests in the store (please tip well!). My favorite savory item at Flour is, hands down, the cauliflower melt. I also really like the egg sandwich and seasonal farro salad. My favorite sweets are the lemon ginger scone, raspberry crumb bar, low-fat vegan chocolate cake, banana bread, and, somewhat unexpectedly, the oatmeal raisin cookie. I know that isn't the sexiest list of pastries, but I think people sleep on those. Bread ends and day-olds are also a good deal. Folks looking for vegan and gluten-free goods can can rest assured that there are some excellent, if limited, options, from the seasonal muffins and hummus sandwich to the gluten-free bread, and staff are careful to not cross-contaminate. However, I think the coffee could be better. I'm no expert, but I've never found the drip coffee to be great. Flour has been reliable and consistent throughout many visits and my time working there, and it offers a fairly large menu of savory and sweet items, so it's one of my go-tos for comforting, no-frills food. read more

It was pouring when I came in, and I literally walked in to the lyrics "raindrops keep falling on my head..." playing, making me feel strangely welcomed and at home. I feel a bit sad about Flour's expansion toward being a local chain, of sorts, perhaps because it feels just a little less special as each new store opens. However, I also love that more areas of the city have Flour's sticky buns and grilled sandwiches and raspberry seltzers :) This location keeps the overall Flour vibe, service level, and food quality. / BOTTOM LINE: Joanne Chang returns to her alma mater to expand her empire -- Harvard's Flour Bakery and Cafe has everything Flour is known for (sticky buns! Sandwiches!) and a lovely staff, making it the perfect spot for breakfast/lunch for Harvard's tourists and locals alike. Service is crazy fast (If I'm getting a pastry, I get it immediately. If it's a sandwich/salad, I get mine in fewer than 5 minutes most of the time). P.S. You can order online for pick up. / THE SPACE: Pretty small. The windows are lined with bars for a quick meal and there are around 10 cafe tables that are almost always taken up by squatters with laptops. I've rarely found a spot to sit here, and the place is built out mostly for takeout. There are a bunch of people with little devices for ordering at the baked goods section in front of the door -- order your stuff there! Trendy coffee shop with good food. I admit I went to Boston to eat the food... and I found Flour bakery's sticky bun on a Boston food list, so there we were :) A lot of people on a Sunday at noon. There was a constant stream of people while we were there. We were lucky to snag seats on the long table by the window. Sticky bun *must try* The perfect combo of soft and dense, deep and rich sugary syrup and pecans. Chicken and brie sandwich Delish! Bread was nice and toasted, sandwich fillings were warm, and the melty cheese coated everything. This is a great sandwich (or a panini?) - They also sell day old pastries for only $1 each! I am here all the time for their roasted chicken and lamb sandwiches. They are both very flavorful and delicious I like the whole Flour Cafe vibe. Cute fonts, bright and clean. My reservations about this cafe are 1) that it can get very crowded. I wish it were a place where you could sit and actually do work but IMHO it's too tightly packed and noisy practically all the time. 2) the prices have increased. When half sandwiches were below $5 I thought that was reasonable, but $5.50 for a half sandwich seems a bit much. read more

What a beautiful new location! We've been waiting about 10 years for the old Chili's to turn into something useful. What could be more useful than buttery baked goods? While I wasn't a fan of their breakfast egg sandwich everything else I tried was amazing. Coconut Cream Pie - classic, great coconut flavor, perfect cream consistency, crunchy crust Sticky Bun - their claim to fame, no cinnamon but lots of brown sugar and fresh pecans St. Tropez - very interesting, underlying almond flavor, fresh cream, crystallized sugar on top Carrot Cake - probably the best I ever had, so rich, great frosting to cake ratio I would get all of these all over again but there are so many other things I need to try first! Ahhhh Flour--the slightly more edgy Crema and less basic Tatte. Probably would be my favorite and most frequented shop in Harvard Square Area if it weren't a little ways away from the main section of the Square. Also it's pretty much always kind of cramped for space. I would not recommend going to do work. So why the four star rating? In my eyes the baked goods and sandwiches make Flour shine. I pretty much love all the flavor combinations of the sandwiches, and I'm tempted every time by how amazing the cookies, pastries, and breads look. It's definitely worth a stop, and you will 100% be able to find an interesting menu item that will make you glad you chose Flour over another cafe or coffee shop. read more

You cannot go wrong with any of the desserts here, and the iced coffees are some of the most reasonably priced for their size around. Flour also happens to serve an unusually delicious egg sandwich, made so by the addition of a health fistful of arugula, and a strong mustard flavored dressing that give a punch of spice and acid to the classic mixture of fat and protein. Favorite cafe in the square--even more than tatte. I believe flour has better quality food for the same/more reasonable prices!!!! 'Tis a late review, but.... My girlfriend brought me to this place because she had the 'best' roasted lamb sandwich. I got the sandwich she recommended. She got the smoked turkey sandwich, and then, traded her half of the sandwich for mine. Lastly, I got a mug of coffee. Admittedly, the lamb sandwich was a really interesting experience, but ultimately, as the overall of it, I was not convinced largely due to my personal taste. The roasted lamb in itself was delectable, and that was it. I was not a fan of a cold roasted lamb with some raw vegetables. The experience would be much better, should the veggies were softer and the sandwich was warm. The smoked turkey sandwich, on the other hand, emerged as the victor of the two by the landslide. The cheddar, the cranberry chutney, the apple-dill slaw. Such a combination created a whole new trip in my mouth. The coffee was great too. The menu, as well as the pastries, were poised as a gamechanger for many in the neighborhood, and I admire their willingness to take a risk in transforming their menu into something different and challenging the other typically mundane menu. I live for Flour breakfast sandwiches. I love that they serve this sandwich all day! I stopped in after my internship and grabbed one for dinner. Breakfast food all day err'day. The egg comes as a soft and fluffy patty. I recently learned that it is beaten with cream and steamed to create a soufflé-like consistency. This is a pre-pandemic review from a couple of years ago (oops). I love Joanne Chang's cookbooks, so this was first on my list of bakeries to visit when I moved to Boston. This was the first Flour location I visited and made an excellent stop during an eating tour of Cambridge. I got the famous sticky bun, and it was pretty good. It's huge, indulgent, and definitely sticky. However, I think it suffered from sitting at the counter for a little while in the afternoon, as I've had them from other Flour locations earlier in the morning, and there's a big difference. I also tried a kouign-amann, which was my first time trying this pastry. It was pretty good, though I was expecting more. It basically tasted like a denser and sweeter croissant. I'm glad I tried it, but I probably wouldn't get it again. There's a beautiful variety of other baked goods, and after having gone to other Flour locations, I really recommend the mousse cake and the peanut butter cookies. The bakery itself is bright and sunny with plenty of seating. Will come back to try more! read more

Relatively new location; I've had some of the cheesecake style items, and some of the breads, and some sandwiches. A now-successful chain, this latest branch makes it more convenient for those in the Harvard Sq. area to sample Flour. I know proprietors are paying sky-high rent in the area, but I do wish that the pastries were a bit cheaper. Things also tend to be on the sweet side (yes, this is a bakery) but I think a bit more texture in their foods, and less texturally bland filling, can help distinguish itself from a place like Tatte. read more

I've been going to this flour location since it opened as a welcomed addition to Harvard Square. It's a beloved and a busy place. They have my favorite Mocha in Boston (Look at my other reviews, I've really tried them all!) The base is a chocolate ganache which makes it beautifully rich and chocolaty, the hot chocolate is the same rich taste without the expresso, and the iced version is wonderful too! Also, a huge fan of the breakfast sandwich made with their signature egg soufflé. I haven't run into anything on the menu I haven't enjoyed from baked goods (the cookies!) through elaborate sandwiches or salads. The staff is alway friendly and helpful. They always do special holiday menus for preorder. Definitely worth stopping in to try! read more
