A simply great doughnut shop! I'll start this review by saying I absolutely love donuts. I have tried nearly all of the doughnut shops around, and always try somewhere new as I travel. This is one of the best mom and pop doughnut shops in the states. Period. I should mention that if you want to try every kind of doughnut here; you'll need to get here EARLY. They open at 6am on Wednesdays. I showed up at 5:58am, and they were down to about 1/3 of their donuts left. The owner said customers usually start arriving a little over an hour before the shop opens. Now down to the important stuff. The donuts! I tried the following: Glazed - Very good 8.3/10 Cinnamon Twist - 11/10. I've seriously never had one this good. Ever. Fruit cake (Flavor of the day) - 8.9/10 This was very good for a cake doughnut. Slightly better than Lamar's pineapple cake doughnut if you are a pineapple fan. Chocolate Long John - 7/10 Although good, it was just a normal chocolate LJ. Maple Long John - 8/10 The doughnut itself isn't a knockout, but the icing is phenomenal. Its worth buying this doughnut just for the maple icing! Raspberry Bismarck - 6.5/10 This tastes like nearly every other shop's Bismarck. Chocolate Iced Bavarian Cream Bismarck - 9/10 Their Bavarian Cream is one of the best I've tasted. They are very well priced ($8-9 per assorted dozen depending on selection). I paid $10 for a milk, and a custom assorted dozen with five large donuts. Keep in mind they are cash only. Love this mom and pop donut shop! They only accept cash! They donuts have a wonderful outer crunch to them but yet so deliciously soft inside. I used to live near Johnson drive and every Saturday I'd get to at 6 am to run and get a dozen glazed, I moved a bit further but every now and then I still do it! They close when they sell out, and they do sell out fast! You are able to call the night before and place your order so you can guarantee you'll get them, which is cool. I usually go at 7 am and I can still get my dozen glazed. Very cool old time feel inside, barely enough room to stand so there is no indoor seating. Fluffy Fresh is hands down my go-to donut shop for fluffy, fresh, plain glazed donuts. I've had a handful of the other assortments, all of which were really good, but they just make a really great glazed donut. That being said - once they're out for the day they close their doors, which if I remember correctly is around 7:30-8 am, so you have to get there EARLY. This wasn't an issue when I was living in Mission, but now it's a bit of a drive just a little too early. I wish they'd make a couple extra batches to get me through to a time where I can actually make it in time! (Not that it's about me, they're just that good!) I'm a Lamar's girl, but my co-worker requested Fluffy Fresh for his birthday. I was warmly greeted and informed there were only glazed left. "Want 'em all?" And they gave me a friendly discount on the last nine doughnuts only to turn away the elderly couple coming in. "We've just sold out!" To top it off? Some free coffee. And the actual doughnuts themselves? Warm, fresh, funnel-cake like deliciousness. The glaze is super sweet so if you like icing and sugar, you'll love the glazed doughnuts. These donuts....wow oh wow. They are impeccable. Handmade, delicious, and worth every calorie. Like everyone else has mentioned, their two greatest are the original glazed and the cinnamon twists. Unfortunately, those are the two that sell out the fastest. You can call ahead the day before and leave a message on their voicemail with your order, or I called at midnight and one of the owner's answered. He took my order and I picked it up the coming morning. If you are in the area, or even if you're not, do yourself a favor and stop here. First time trying these donuts. WOW! I tried the raised glazed, chocolate longjohn, raspberry filled, and cinnamon twist. Ive eaten many donuts from Philly to Seattle and given that Seattle is the coffee and donut capital of the world, the sweet owners at Fluffy Fresh have the best donuts I've ever ate. This place has my vote for 1st prize on "How Did Yelp Miss This" 2010 awards. How do I preface this? I have never. . . . EVER. . . . EVER EVER EVER . . . . . been a doughnut person. So a friend told me that there was a doughnut shop so good it would split your skull clean in half with jubilation. The original of Fluffy Fresh sold his first doughnut shop to Ray Lamar. It's how Ray Lamar got his start. The one thing he did not sell though, was the recipe. So now, the son of the owner carries on the tradition of making doughnuts with a 19th century recipe. He's up at midnight day in and day out, and is in his shop by 1:30AM, making BY HAND, the best doughnuts that have ever graced the entire Earth. The demand for these doughnuts is legendary. And if you're not there by 6:30AM to pick up some, you will be disappointed. When they sell out, I mean they are SOLD OUT. The other thing about this place it is literally a time machine back to the 1940's. Everything inside is original. it's cash only as well. (they still do take checks though) Oh, and did I mention I bought nearly 40 doughnuts for $19.00??? the prices are back from the 70's! On to the doughnuts. Although they have a large selection of all kinds of goodies in the glass case, skip them all completely. there are only two things you need to know. Regular glazed & Cinnamon twists. What I am now about to describe, is just really impossible to describe into words. When these doughnuts are hot and fresh, the crispiness on the outside of it is surreal. When you begin to chew on it, the sensation of perfect crisp to the proportion of dough in the middle of it is tongue numbing. The reaction. The electrical impulses going on in your brain are sinister. It's Hiroshima going off in your pituitary gland. You want to confess sins to someone. Random childhood memories begin to engulf your sensations with delusional nostalgia. You now skip giving junkies .10 cents and hand out $100 bills. KIM JONG IL (or anyone for that matter) CAN SPANK YOU AND YOU WILL LOVE IT. If Homer Simpson knew about Fluffy Fresh doughnuts, the show would totally based out of Mission KS . . . Yes, this doughnut must be TASTED to understand it. I have found myself waking up at 5:15AM on Wednesday mornings trying to beat traffic from Olathe to Mission just to get them hot. I had an elderly co-worker at my job literally (and I'm not exaggerating this) moved to tears because although she really didn't care for doughnuts, they reminded her of the homemade doughnuts her father used to make back in the 40's. People, these doughnuts can cease wars. They can stop hunger worldwide. They make you feel so rich inside, you think Donald Trump is a custodian at a McDonald's. . . . . They get the full five stars, even though have literally pulled up to the front of the shop, or walked there, in the wee hours, only to see the old school neon sign go tragically dark, and the cardboard "Sorry, out of donuts" sign go up. *cue sad trombone* Old school. "Fluffy Fresh" doesn't mean flashy or modern ambience. It doesn't mean in-shop seating. It certainly doesn't mean you can count on there being doughnuts after about 7 a.m. most mornings, and pretty much never after 8. It DOES mean delicious smells, a line of dedicated locals often out the door, and, most importantly, as the name implies, baked goods that are indeed the epitome of "fresh" and "fluffy." This is a shop that adds, along with the blocks of low-slung, chrome-edged, vintage shops up and down Johnson Drive, a throwback feel to Mission, and one that you don't find in just every suburban community. The place that is truly mom n' pop. I talked to a high school wrestler on his way to a meet (maybe the doughnuts helped him make weight?) on a recent Saturday morning, there with his mom, and they'd been stopping in since he was five years old. Fluffy Fresh reminds me of venerable old shops in my rural hometown, from days when chains and convenience stores that have their baked goods trucked hadn't yet gained serious footing. They really do subscribe to the old "time to make the doughnuts" adage, and bake through the night for their morning crush. You can order ahead, as well, if you don't want them to run out of your favorite in their small storefont display cases. My favorite are the cinnamon twists, a glazed braided doughnut that's actually not super overly cinnamon-y, just perfectly so. I don't do cake doughnuts, so can't speak to those firsthand, but my cake doughnut-loving husband (that's just wrong, IMO), gives them two sticky thumbs up. The donuts here are fresh and not as commercial tasting as Krispy Kreme or Lamar's. The glazed donut was fluffy with a crispy sugary exterior, but a little too chewy for my taste. I didn't believe it until I tried it. Then I tried it. All I gotta say is these are one of the best donuts I have ever had. I go for the classic glazed, the donut is not "too doughy" (doesn't make sense, but it really does) and it has a tad bit of a crunch when you bite into it. SO GOOD. I got spoiled living in Texas because there are so many great local joints (Round Rock, Gordough's, Mrs. Johnson's) that are open when you need a late night munch or a morning sugar rush. So when I moved to Kansas City I had a hard time figuring out where exactly I'd get my rare donut fix from. Thankfully a coworker recommended this place and now I will go nowhere else. Lamar's, Daylight...neither hold a candle to this small little Mom and Pop joint. The location can be hard to spot-the first visit I drove up and down the street several times, only to find them located in a nondescript center with the words "DONUTS" written across the top of the building. The inside of the shop is small and manned by a very pleasant couple who constantly turn out these sugary gems until they can take no more for the day. They are fast, friendly and their donuts are totally OUT OF THIS WORLD. I've tried their twists, long johns, several cake varieties and regular glazed and I have never been disappointed. They even have a daily fruit-cake variety (my box yesterday had an orange flavored cake donut that was pretty tasty) that is always a treat to test out. Their prices are very reasonable, too-though be sure you have cash on hand as they don't take credit (though this is pretty standard for dive-type donut places.) All in all if you need a joint to get your daily sugar high from, check out this place. They need your business and you need their donuts. Trust me. read more

They look huge, but don't kid yourself and try just eating half - you WILL come back for the rest of it. If you want a couple dozen donuts and don't want them to run out of your favorite, call ahead and place your order 24-48 hours early. Otherwise, show up by 7:30 and get an assortment of whatever they have left. You won't be sorry. I picked up a dozen cake donuts and a dozen assorted (twists, bavarian cream) and the total was only $18. Bring cash. MMMMM !!!! Long Johns, glazed, twists oh my! all the good ole classics :) This is a MA and PA donut shop in Mission, and out of all the donut shops i have been to, this one is the best. The donuts are an average of .60 cents each. and the best donut is when they pull them hot out of their ovens aaahhhh i can feel it melt in my mouth now (pause as i savor the memory.....) The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because they take cash only, and they only make a certain amount everyday (closed Mondays) and when they are out they close for the day.... and that makes me sad :( mainly because I usually get there when the the sign out front says "OUT OF DONUTS" If I didnt care about my arteries and such I would have this for breakfast everyday. My son and I love to get a donut in the morning on his way to school. the drive is from downtown to lenexa, so anywhere in between is fair game. The perfect mix between overly dry & bready QT/grocery/Lamar's donuts and cloyingly sweet Krispy Kremes (though I do love me a good enamel-melting sugar shock donut from Krispy Kreme now and then too). Everyone is right about getting there early though. Any time after about 7:30am, and you're stuck with the leftovers. ...which is, of course, perfectly fine if you didn't have your heart set on a specific flavor. The name says it all because that's what they are FLUFFY FRESH. I get a combo box sometimes for the guys at work and I barley get the box set down before they are tearing into them, and I can count on somebody crying because they didn't get a cinnamon twist. Talking with the couple that run the place, the recipe came from his dad and he used a special flour that don't soak up allot of grease. I got here really early, actually they didn't even have the sign on that they were open until about 15 mins after the posted time they open. So Im first customer, and excited that I will have my pick of pretty much anything there. Then I get to the shop, and their is basically no variety. I left with a dozen mixed donuts, which ends up being 4 glazed, 2 long johns, 2 cinnoman twists, and 4 cake donuts. The donuts were pretty good, but I guess I was expecting a much larger selection to choose from. I had cash, so it didn't deter me that it was a cash only shop. So in a nut shell, I think that the donuts they do produce are done well, but don't go in thinking that you can leaving with a big variety or many choices. read more

Fluffy Fresh Donuts is a ridiculous place. lol. Unexpectedly, the power went off in my office building, so I felt like this was a grand opportunity to try out this donut shop. I rolled in at quarter to 8, and there was legitimately NOTHING in the display cases in front. I had that sinking feeling in my stomach as I decided to wait in line anyway, and ask about any other donuts they might be keeping on the downlow in the back. Luckily, there were three left (obviously -day = made), and they were warm and fluffy fresh. Only the original glazed were left, and ultimately, I prefer a cake-y style donut, so these really weren't for me. All in all, worth a visit if you like a fluffy, original glazed (cuz that's all they may have left -- can't speak for any other type of donut), but this place ain't got nothing on Donut King. But additional bonus: 50 cents for a cup of joe in a Styrofoam cup. Can you beat that? read more

Lamar's used to be my favorite. The donuts here are a little less sweet, less glossy, less processed, and way more authentic. They are seriously good, and my new favorites. The place was busy at 6:30, and the case was just beginning to empty. It's clear they have regulars. The woman behind the counter could not have been nicer. She is totally the kind of person you want to start your day with. I was able to get a little over 2 dozen assorted for less than $20. (Cash or check only.) The cinnamon twists do not disappoint; I haven't had anything quite like them before. I really like the texture of both their cake and regular donuts. I (only) had three myself, and my personal favorite was a cake donut with chocolate icing and chopped peanuts. The peanuts were so fresh, the donut smelled like peanut butter. The store itself is small, with a screen door. Pretty much perfect for what's going on inside. Johnson Drive is deserted that early in the morning so if you don't know exactly where Fluffy Fresh is, look for the cars out front. Just don't stop at the Yoga studio (early morning class), and don't stop at Lamar's down the street. Give Fluffy Fresh a try. Support this place. read more
