The Bedford Avenue station is a very busy subway station in Williamsburg. It is the second busiest…read morestation in Brooklyn. It first opened 100 years ago in 1924. Imagine how many people have ridden on the L Line as one of the first segments of the underground Canarsie Line over the past 100 years. Amazing! No Less Than Everything Comes Together. Going back and forth from Williamsburg to Prospect Heights meant a lot of trips from this station through Manhattan. I don't think I'll ever understand why there still isn't a way to get from Brooklyn to Brooklyn without going through Manhattan. Yet, it allowed me to discover a series of beautiful mosaics by Marcel Dzama. The Sun. The Moon. The Sky. All connected in No Less Than Everything Comes Together by Marcel Dzama. The mosaics are so interesting and detailed. Dzama cites that he was influenced by the great Dada movement artist, Marcel Duchamp, but the mosaics remind me more of the Catalan architect, Antoni Gaudi. Either way, the mosaics are so fun and playful. Take a few minutes on your vacation or your daily commute to enjoy the whimsical dancers, the sun, the moon and a few historical characters that all play a part in the mosaics in the underground Bedford Avenue Subway.

There are plenty of signs at the station that tell you where to wait for that bus and which terminal to go for each airline. FYI, this bus is currently fare-free.

The station itself is nothing spectacular, there's an uptown bound train the stops on the east side…read moreof the street on 3rd Ave, (meaning you need to enter on the east side) you can't cross over within the station to the downtown bound side on the west side of the street. The opposite is true of the downtown train. For cleanliness--i wouldn't suggest the 5 second rule if you drop anything here or on any public transit surface in NYC for that matter, ie. comparable to most subway stations. The one bright spot is mosaic artwork by painter Robert Kushner, titled Four Seasons Seasoned installed during renovations to the station in 2003-4, alluding to four depictions of flowers associated with each of the four seasons. Parts of this installation are visible on the overhead decoration as you pass the turnstiles and down several stairs to each platform, both on uptown and downtown platforms. The flowers use soft tones with gold trimming, and look like they belong next to a Gustav Klimt painting, a little out of place on a dingy subway platform, though adds a splash of beauty to an otherwise grey (from dirt and dust) and monotonously designed subway platform. They're coming further into Brooklyn, don't you know? It is right near a very bad hospital that I would not want to be taken to if I needed medical services. However, if you got off at this stop by mistake or found you were going in the wrong direction you can just walk within the station to the other side & not be forced to spend more money to get the train in the opposite direction. Speaking of hipsters, make sure to check out the subway art/graffiti here. I've seen some great social commentary and generally insightful work at this station. It usually brings a smile to my face.

As one of the most popular stops along the 7 line, 46th Street - Bliss Street is in the heart of…read moreSunnyside. Given the number of people that get on and off this stop, it's probably a solid candidate for an express stop some day. (#1) For the unfamiliar, the 46th Street stop is among the majority of stops that are above ground. For folks waiting at the station, it has some of the best views of the Manhattan skyline and unless there are stalled trains, it's never all that crowded. Another fun tidbit is that this is actually the last stop along Queens Blvd before the train turns onto Greenpoint Ave (#2) toward Woodside. Folks who want stay awhile will find that there are a number of eateries just outside of the station. It isn't the most exciting stop by any means and could probably use a facelift (#3). On weekends, there is often something going on at the street level side of the station. Just another reason why Sunnyside is worth checking out always. ____________ (#1) Who are we kidding? Flushing bound folks love that LIC to Woodside ride. If 74th Street - Jackson Heights can't have it, then neither can Sunnyside. Well not really but it is really cool because it's close to my favorite pizza in the whole of New York City, and it's a pretty safe station that gives you access to the overground train that cross is Queensboro Bridge. It's also close to Jackson Heights where some of the best food in the country is. Not to mention the halal cart open late right next to the stop. And that view.
