I had the misfortune of having my flute stolen a few years back. After some time had passed, I decided it was time to buy a new flute. The staff at Flutacious! provided me with everything I needed. I told them that I hadn't played in a few years and I would likely need some time and help to really know which flute I would want to buy. When I arrived at the store they had an assortment of flutes laid out for me to test (within my price point), IT WAS HEAVEN! I was instructed to try out different things on each flute (ie. f scale, double tongue, dynamics, slurring, different registers). Having not played in a while, I found this really helpful... honesty, it had been so long I didn't really know what to do. I tried out each one and they made a list of what they thought was the best one for me, but first they asked me which ones I thought were the best and worst, carefully taking into considerations what I had thought of the flute. I played through each flute a few times and finally decided.... That I couldn't decide. So they let me take a few flutes on an extended at home test trial. I ended up purchasing an Azumi after the trail, all the flutes were good.... but the Azumi made me smile every time I played it! They also have a bunch of accessories and flute music there! The coolest experience ever. This was going to be my forever flute, a step up from a Student flute. I've played for years off and on since the 70's and only owned student models. My current flute was about 20 years old. It was my sons from middle school. I donated my actual 1st flute, an Artley, to a middle school music program. I started taking lessons again over 3 years ago and have not only grown to love playing again but actually practice more and I'm more focused. So after all these years I felt I earned a step up to a big girl flute. I'm not a pro but I have passion and just love playing. As for the great service! Well Cynthia, the owner, responded to all my emails and was patient with all my inquiries. Once we finally set our appointment I was ready. My flute teacher, Joanne Hsueh, here in San Diego highly recommended I go here. I was so excited that I arrived a half hour early and they were more than welcoming. I met with Deanna and she was patient and helped me along with my decision. What's really cool is they let you try different flutes, to get the right fit. I brought my old one and had music with me so I could really get a feel for what was right for me. I think we were there about an hour and a half. They did a great job repairing my precious Sankyo flute, which I've had since at least 2007. It has lacked maintenance for many years. They recommended an overhaul for $1695 due to the extent of repairs needed to restore the flute to pristine condition meant for heavy use (hours per day), but as I no longer play frequently, I just needed it to work perfectly for sporadic use, and they were able to get it up to par with a $495 COA (Clean, Oil, Adjust) and replacing a few small parts (like the headjoint cork). They completed the repairs in exactly 2 weeks, which was their estimated turnaround time. I drove all the way from Torrance (an hour drive) to come here and I'm glad I did! All of you musicians know how precious our instruments are to us, and they deserve the best service possible. They did offer to send my flute back to me so I wouldn't have to drive back to pick it up, but I chose to drive back because I just don't trust any shipping carriers with my precious Sankyo. I have an EXTREMELY busy schedule (school, work, preparing for the MCAT, applying to medical schools, and planning a wedding), and I still chose to drive all the way here! Their business is difficult to locate - I drove around that street numerous times before finding their driveway! To find it: turn onto Bonita Drive, which is a dead-end street. Turn around so you are facing away from the dead end and towards the direction from which you came. On the left side, you will see a somewhat hidden narrow driveway (likely to the right of some recycling bins from the adjacent property). This driveway is the one that curves to the left a little ways up - not the driveway that goes straight up to another property that you can see. You won't be able to see this business until you get around the curves part of their driveway. I hope that helps someone! read more

Flutacious came to Colburn during a flute masterclass week to display their flutes, piccolos, and various other wares for the masterclass performers to take a look at. I've been to woodwind specialty shops, but I've never been to a flute specialty shop and this is the first one I've actually heard of. I loved it! All of their flutes and piccolos out for display are really really reaaaallly nice and well maintained--I'm very impressed! Most instruments from average music shops aren't well maintained...but Flutacious does much better than that. All the sheet music they offered was relevant, as well--not just the average "pop tunes for flute players" deal. All the swabs, rods, cleaning materials were of high quality too. Everything out on display was just very useful to the amateur/professional flute player--and everything honestly really impressed me. Well anyways, knowing that the associates are very knowledgable about what they're actually doing is very reassuring. The two associates today that were present (Amy and man whose man I didn't catch) knew all about flute, how to play it, and all the technicalities. It wasn't just "let me ring you up and send you on your way," it was "you study with _____? and ________ flute is great because _________, and while you're here, I'll take a look at your flute before you leave." I will most definitely visit the shop in person some day. When I'm back in school in LA I will most definitely be back here when I need some help with my flute. I own all the major flutes in the flute family (flute, piccolo, alto and bass) and Flutacious is the only place I will take any of my instruments when they need a check up or repair. Last year, they did a normal "oil & lube" check up on my bass and did a wonderful job. One of my keys was being wonky, it really was bothering them and they wouldn't give it back to me until they knew that the problem was fixed. I recently had a some pads replaced on my piccolo because of some leaks and my instrument now plays perfectly. The care that Amy, Cynthia and everyone at Flutacious puts into making sure that my flutes are playing at their absolute best is second to none. They love the flute and know how to make them play at their maximum potential.
