Needed a sofa, and was expertly guided by two great associates, Lisa and Victoria. They were great listeners, and quickly got a sense of my style and budget. If you stop by Fly By Night, ask for Chandra. She is the most positive, warm, knowledgeable designer/sales rep. She has a keen eye for color and for matching pieces in your space. She will look at photos of your space, do a video tour, even come to your home! Exceptional Gal. While the prices can be on the higher side, I find most furniture of any quality is these days. They do have occasional sales, and try to get things ordered in a speedy way but the supply chain can be tricky as we know. All in all a very fine store with exceptional staff. read more

Ordered futon mattress. Was told it could be delivered on Friday, but needed it sooner. I arranged to pick it up on a Tuesday in Easthampton as Mattress Firm was picking up a mattress on Wednesday. I arrived at warehouse with a friend who took time off of work with his truck. Was told it was "oversold", but may get discount on a better model. I explained that I wanted that model and could not wait as my old futon was bad, and my back was acting up, as was visible with my back support belt. Called Maynard store to speak with owner, was told he was interviewing, and after explaining situation I would be called back. Went to store and was told I could pay 50% of the increase in price to get a better model. I explained that was unacceptable as mattress should have been tagged at warehouse and if one was not available I should have been told so. Store help was not empathetic or interested in goodwill to a customer (repeat customer at that). Friend is in retail (as I was) and was also appalled. I am not happy at all that I am about to give this negative review because this used to be my favorite furniture store but my latest experience with them was absolutely terrible. I have very bad back pain and arthritis which has resulted in multiple surgeries. I needed to replace a much loved recliner loveseat that was 25 years old. When we entered the store we were greeted by a sales person to whom I explained the situation and she immediately introduced me to the current EXTEMELY expensive nightmare that is now in my tv room. Not only did it take me almost a year to get the piece, it took me months and months and months longer to even get it to work somewhat properly. 1. Within days of delivery, there were problems so we couldn't use it AND we couldn't get anyone to "fix" it for quite a while. 2. As you probably guessed, the "fix" didn't work so I still couldn't use it 3. Then, we waited additional months to get a repairman to finally look at it and HE told us that the piece was Canadian, it is well known that there have been lots of problems getting issues such as ours resolved by them and they are difficult to deal with. Fly By Night did not disclose any of this information, even the most basic facts. 4. The repairman gave us a couple of options, including having someone (who and how many more months of waiting before this would happen?) come to our house to evaluate the situation and maybe the entire piece would be replaced but he couldn't even assure us that it would be. Otherwise, he said he could try something that could help but he wasn't sure if it would work or how long it may work. Naturally, we went with his suggested fix as I was now without a chair that provided me with the support I needed for almost two years. He also explained that it wasn't an ideal solution but he hoped it would work. Kudos to that guy because I was finally able to use the chair but his solution has caused other, extremely annoying problems, especially for someone with my issues. Bottom line, I hate this expensive piece of furniture that I'm now stuck with and I will not shop at this or any store that doesn't disclose this type of information. I trusted Fly By Night and, I know this sounds dramatic but, they betrayed that trust. When you're dishing out that kind of money and you explain to them why it's so very important to you, the almighty $ shouldn't be their most important objective. Given the price I paid for it, I was shocked by the shoddy craftsmanship of the Monarch bed delivered to my home as compared to what I saw in the showroom. The headboard had plasticized wood putty filled knotholes. At this price, I would have expected a manufacturer to reject any wood that needed fill. Two of the slats looked like pine wood scavenged from a shipping palette: irregularly shaped and with rough bark still on it. Indeed, the bed was installed with a jimmy rigged central rail with three feet to support the slats, an unfortunate compromise of the sleek design featured online and in the showroom. The rail and feet also compromise vacuuming and under-bed storage. Even Ikea bed slats are solid hardwood and evenly milled. While I understand that wood grains will differ within a piece, the top board of my footboard has an unsightly black whorl that contrasts starkly with all the other boards in the bed. For the pricepoint I associate with Fly By Night, I expect manufacturers to take care in the choice of materials and matching graining patterns. While staff quickly offered to replace the headboard, I am still awaiting satisfaction on the other issues. I dont think I'll be shopping here again. Update: after staff showed my pictures to the owners two months after my initial complaint, the store has agreed to replace the footboard. I will still avoid this store until they work with manufacturers to assure better quality control...and what's with that jimmy-rigged central rail that doesn't appear in online materials or in the showroom?? read more

Most of the vendors they have here are American made & small business run, with a select handful of those companies being local and talented individuals who work personally with the owners of FBN. Many of their futon frames are made locally! My favorite collection is the Noho bedroom set, handmade out of solid cherry or walnut by an Amish family that is friends with Richard, one of the owners. He worked with them on the design to create a durable and sturdy collection within a very modest price point. I must admit, the owner can come off as a little intense, but he genuinely cares about the product and how you relate to it. Trust me, He means well. Fly by Night has been our go to store for our important home furnishings for over twenty five years. The purchases we have made have not been inexpensive (often we have waited for sales and promotions to help with the cost), but have always been our most beautiful and long lasting. In every instance we have been more than pleased with the assistance and advise we have received in the store, the sturdiness and craftsmanship of the pieces we have chosen and the expert delivery. Several years ago I wanted to choose new sofa cushions, but couldn't make up my mind about the fabric and colors. The good souls at Fly By Night let me take home a different set every day until I found just the right match. Recently we purchased a beautiful hand crafted bookcase. I went to fly by night because I thought it was a high end futon store. We were looking for a queen futon mattress. I wanted a quality mattress (which I got). As we were checking out the man at the register made us second guess ourselves on the measurements. I specially ordered a queen size futon. He said most queen frames are really full. This made us confused. We ended up buying a full size when we clearly needed a queen. When we get home and unpacked the mattress of course It I didn't fit. I called the store to explain the situation. This is what I got instead "I hope you didn't take it out of the box (of course we did how did we know if it fit or not) Well you know a mattress is like that underwear once you take it out of the package you can send it back". The comment was totally uncalled for. I was not asking them to take the mattress back. What I wanted to know is the size of a queen mattress. The "gentleman" that answered the phone was extremely unprofessional. Who says that? I will never buy anything from that store again. read more

We ordered a couch from here for our new home. The custom fabric selections are amazing. The prices are not cheap, but fair for the quality. The service was so-so: we got better attention as young shoppers once they realized we were ready to drop a couple thousand dollars today. They require at least half down on custom ordered pieces, and we were told it would take "around 6 weeks" to be done. At 6 weeks, I called to check, and was told it should be on the way. Another week, no word. Called again. This time, got a snotty response "we'll call you when it's in." Pardon me for checking on my paid for and now overdue furniture. It arrived at 9 weeks. It was delivered with no paperwork or proof of warranty, and Norwalk states their warranty starts upon delivery. So while I'm happy with the couch itself, I'm not thrilled with the service, especially after the sale. I may look to see who else is a Norwalk dealer in the future nearby. read more

If Fly By Night had *real* integrity, they would not sell Gold Bond Full Serene foam mattresses. Why? Because the product offgasses such a strong, persistent chemical smell that for some people (including people like me who had never previously thought of themselves as particularly sensitive to chemicals) it is simply not usable as a mattress. When I initially received the mattress, the smell was strong enough that I opened the windows and put a fan on it. When the smell persisted, I kept the fan on it for several days before sleeping on it. The smell decreased, but after two months there is still a baseline level of a chemical, formaldehyde-like smell, noticeable whenever you lay down on it. Regardless of whether it is a harmful VOC, this unpleasant smell pervades the sheets and blankets, and I finally gave up trying to simply ignore or get used to it. If Fly By Night had *some* integrity, they would inform their customers that off-gassing of chemical smells from foam mattresses may persist for long periods of time, and that some customers may find this objectionable. They would also inform customers that they do not accept returns on mattress sales before the sale. Instead, I made a semi-major purchase $600 for something that I was unable to use. I finally had to buy another mattress from a company on the internet, after a lot of research (Happsy, check them out, they do accept returns!). I contacted Fly By Night, and was told that "Only like 3% of people have an issue with the smell of foam mattresses." I also got the exact same totally unhelpful comment that the Yelp reviewer from Worcester received, about "You know a mattress is like that underwear once you take it out of the package you can send it back." Because I try to shop local whenever possible, I tried to give them an opportunity to maintain / restore a relationship with a long-term customer (I had bought a futon there previously, years ago). I did not ask for a refund. I asked if they could at least pick up and take away the useless mattress they sold me, at no cost to me. In my view, if they had *even a small amount* of integrity they would have accommodated this request. Instead they refused, and offered instead to come to my house with a representative from the manufacturer to smell it, and to maybe offer a replacement of the same mattress. Which even in the best of outcomes would not have helped, and would likely just have prolonged this frustrating situation. Fly By Night did an outstanding job of not listening to one of their customers, and of not really extending themselves one bit to satisfy a customer. I will happily never shop there again, because of their arrogance. Buyer beware. read more

This is a nice store that carries some nice lines. For the most part the sales associates are knowledgeable and personable. Over the years we've bought several pieces from them. In the most recent case the delivery time went from 4 to 5 weeks to over 10 with no follow up or explanation. At 8 weeks we went in to ask about the delivery status and happened upon the guy who seems to be the owner - terrible attitude /customer service skills. Seemed to want to fight. My impression is that he's burnt out -- probably time to retire. Delivery guys were nice as well. read more

There is no pressure to buy and they patiently answer question after question. They know their manufacturers very well. We ordered some Gat Creek bedroom furniture with wood sourced locally in West Virginia and each piece signed by the furniture maker. Fly by Night helped us make a small modification to a dresser door by working directly with the designer! What service! They were spot on about delivery dates, too. In addition, we recently had a problem with a sleeper sofa air mattress and Paul at Fly by Night knew exactly how long our warranty was good for and what needed to happen to rectify the problem. He got in touch with the manufacturer and took over the process. You won't get this kind of service or quality at an online store or a national chain. I've made several purchases here. With each transaction, there was something wrong. I'll never shop there again and I don't recommend that people support them. First, I'd exchanged a floor lamp, and the owner acted all snotty about it. The latest was a $1700 bed manufactured by Maple Corner Woodworks in Vermont. First (like a previous reviewer has complained) they told me 6-8 weeks. Then I called at 7 weeks, and it was going to be 10. Then I called at 10 weeks, and they said it would be 12. That is bull, when you're looking forward to something...plus I am 7 months pregnant and if I'd known it would take 12 weeks I would have gone somewhere else...perhaps that's why they "underestimate" at first. When I communicated my displeasure at this, I only got "Any good furniture takes time" and "I don't know who would have told you 6 weeks." As though I were so unreasonable to expect 6-8 weeks like they'd said in the first place. Is waiting 12 weeks supposed to be some kind of badge of wealth honor? Pulease. Maple Corner Woodworks needs to step it up. It is a very simple bed to make once their system is set up. So the bed finally came. It looked very nice. But the center support beam was 1/2" too low, which made all the cross pieces under the mattress bow, the mattress to eventually sag, and a thud sound when my husband got into the bad and if you rolled over a certain way. We called and explained the problem, that we needed a center support beam 1/2" higher. They sent a new beam eventually. It was 1/2" TOO HIGH this time. My husband had gone and purchased a 1/2" board to put over the original beam in the meantime, so that the cross pieces and mattress didn't get ruined. Dealing with it all took so much time. We had to call 3x and explain AGAIN what we needed and take the bed apart to do measurements and etc. They sent another beam with the correct measurements. When you spend $1700 on a bed, you expect quality control at the start. That obviously never happened. My husband asked Maple Corner Woodworks if they would give us any small compensation, gift certificate, etc., for all our hassle. They said that was up to Fly By Night, to contact them and they work work with them. Well, we had to call FBN 3x before they told us no, they were not willing to do ANYTHING, because they had "solved our problem." Also because they charged me 100 less than they normally charged for walnut, since they had quoted me 200 less then they were about to charge me, I complained, so they split the difference. They said that there would be no profit for Maple Corner Woodworks after having shipped the beams. Um, don't care. Fly By Night should hold Maple Corner Woodworks to their word to "work something out" and if they didn't, make SOME gesture themselves. It was a big purchase for us. I was very excited, I'd been waiting for a bed for several years. THe whole experience was awful, my husband will never spend that kind of money on furniture again, and I hope to look at that bed sometime soon without being reminded of the arrogance of Fly By Night. read more

We ordered a futon bed and frame and they delivered an incorrect piece for the frame. When I called and asked that the correct one be delivered, I was told they'd do it tomorrow. I said that my wife was 8-plus months pregnant, and without the bed frame we would be sleeping on the floor. The owner said there was no one to deliver it. I asked him why he couldn't deliver it. He said "I have a basketball game tonight." When the piece eventually arrived, the owner (RZ) asked me to return the incorrect piece that they had sent. So he wanted me to make a special trip to correct their mistake, but he wouldn't make a special trip to correct his own mistake. I've watched them expand over the past decade and have cheered them on - in a world of strip malls, chain stores and cheap Chinese products, isn't it great when a locally owned business selling locally made products does well? They have impeccable taste in what they carry, and guess what - quality ain't cheap. I've always gotten friendly service and it's clear that these people are informed and passionate about what they sell. I can't go five stars because they ARE pricey and you DO have to sometimes wait a long period of time to get your (um, handmade) purchase. If they offered a slightly wider range of price points and a financing option I'd give them that last star. But overall, a nice alternative to the Raymour & Flannigans of the world. read more

The delivery people left behind open box cutter on my 5 year-old's bookshelf when they delivered and installed her new loft bed. Take a look at the photo. The manager was dismissive, said that these things happen in their business, and, while he was sorry, he saw it as a 'little problem' that was the same as leaving behind a screwdriver. A year and a half ago we bought a Natuzzi Conway recliner and loveseat, and in addition to my questions on the leather and construction, my concerns were how well the furniture would stand up to normal use, and if there were problems, would Fly by Night stand behind the product. Sadly, the recliner developed problems with the foam seat, and Fly by Night has not helped at all with the problem. I am frankly surprised that they are so unconcerned with customer satisfaction, and highly disappointed with the quality of the Natuzzi furniture. Before writing this, I called Fly by Night again to attempt once more to resolve the problem; when I called I was told that only one person in the company could handle customer concerns, and was told he would call me back the next day. That was four days ago, and I haven't heard from them yet. I also emailed the individual, and he did not reply to my email. My conclusion: an attractive store with furniture of varying quality and little interest in maintaining customer satisfaction. read more

This is not an easy review for me. Over the years I have spent thousands of dollars at Fly By Night. I have, almost always, been helped by an extraordinary, professional young woman who not only knew about everything they had to offer, but also listened to what I needed in my house. She's one of the best sales/interior design people I've ever run across. My most recent purchase was in early June. Again, the process was flawless. 6-8 weeks for delivery they said. Well, it's now on 11 weeks, going on 12. I've had to call 3 times to ask about the delivery schedule, and each time I've received the same answer: "your piece has left the factory". Oh great. But if you ask where is it, and when will it be here, well there's no answer. The 6-8 week thing apparently was only an estimate. They have no idea where the item is, so they have no way to tell me (even approximately) when it will show up. I wonder if 2016 is only an estimate. We can all buy a $5 paperback on Amazon and the minute we complete the purchase, we know exactly where it is and when it will be delivered. It's not that hard to do. Put on a bar code sticker and scan it when it changes location. So what I'm saying is that at Fly By Night they've mastered the selling part, but the customer service part is from the Stone Age. We recently purchased several major pieces. They arrived more or less within the time frame we were told (for the most part furniture does seem to take 8-12 weeks as far as I can tell no matter where you get them from) and we love them. I feel you pretty much get what you pay for with furniture. We actually drove all the way out to Raymour and Flanigan because of some sticker shock, but realized the quality and styles there were just not acceptable to us. We did have an issue with the quality of one of the pieces when it was first delivered but the owner was really on top of the situation and resolved the problem for us right away. We got excellent help choosing fabrics too and other decorating advice. One thing I also really appreciated was the wide and interesting selection. Lots of great contemporary pieces, although we ended up buying more traditional furniture. Overall we are very happy! read more

After spending ten of thousands of $dollars there, you would think you would be able to return an UNOPENED box to get the furniture component you need and EXCHANGE it for the component that fits your needs . . . BUT NO . . . not at Fly By Night. DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY THERE - they don't care about their customers. Now I have to call the Manufacturer directly to deal with the components because Fly By Night has "issues." I can't even give one star. Buying furniture from this store was hands down, the worst buying experience I've ever had.I spent over $10,000 within a few months after purchasing a new home, and with each purchase there was something wrong.Mistakes happen and I understand, but this went way beyond that. My first purchase was a gorgeous leather sectional.The delivery guys were very awkward to talk to, and far from friendly. After they left I noticed that the leather had a huge dent in it that went all the way around from the inside to the outside. Upon calling the store, I was told that the owner would have to come inspect it before they could do anything about it. The owner never showed up at the scheduled time, and when I called he decided he would just replace the part of the couch that was damaged. I assumed I was going to receive a new piece of furniture as I had ordered: the "new" couch they brought was filled with hair,fur,and dirt around the seams and in the cracks.I had a feeling I had gotten the floor model, and so I went into the store to look at the floor model. Upon arriving at the store I got about 15 feet away from the floor model and could see from that distance that my dented couch which I had returned had been swapped out for the floor model. The dent in the leather was unmistakeable. If I had been consulted about it I would have maybe consented to a floor model, but with a discount. I don't spend thousands of dollars very often on furniture, and now I have no recourse as the owner would not even discuss it with me. He was extremely short and very defensive, snotty, and rude to me and refused to rectify the situation. I also purchased 2 beautiful bedroom pieces from fly by night, which took 6 extra weeks to come. I understand it isn't always under their control,so I was understanding. Finally I got the call- my furniture had arrived! We made a delivery date and I was thrilled, willing to overlook the whole sectional debacle. On the day of delivery, I stayed home from work, only to have them call me at NOON to tell me the furniture was damaged and that they would have to return it. Don't they look the things over before they make a delivery date, just like any other business who gets deliveries? I would think they would have worked this out by now, but no. I missed a day of work for no reason. Nobody even thought to call me the previous day or even first thing that morning. Again I was shown the customer doesn't matter very much. They already had my money so what did they care? Believe it or not, they did the same thing one more time to me- not calling until very late morning to tell me they wouldn't be coming. When the furniture finally did come, they came well after the scheduled time and proceeded to call my phone over and over for a half hour, interrupting my business meeting. They couldn't find the check I had left and threatened to take the furniture back even though I was working in Northampton and said I would come over within the hour and write ANOTHER check. After spending as much as I did, I expected a tiny bit of trust, and certainly to not have my phone blown up while working. Surprise surprise, when I got home and saw the furniture, it was riddled with dents and cracks, and to top it all off the delivery guys broke part of my chandelier- which coincidentally, I had bought at fly by night. I put a stop payment on the check and immediately called the owner to refund my money and come pick the furniture up. He called me names and insulted me, and I was visited later that night at my home by the local police, called by the owner!! When the delivery guys came to pick the furniture up, they actually tried to fake the furniture without giving me the check. I had to make them leave my house twice because they promised they would give me my money back after inspecting the furniture, but when I let them inside to inspect it, they started to remove it without giving my money and actually ignore me!! I had to physically block them from my bedroom until they handed the check over, which was not done until they called their boss- twice!! This was a complete invasion of my home and my personal space. I never asked for any of this. I DID go to a store I thought I could trust and spend over $10,000. I won't bore you with more details, but I would implore you- PLEASE DONT SUPPORT FLY BY NIGHT!! They are mean, ungrateful, ungracious thieves. The owner is new within the last few years and has destroyed the store and it's reputation. Instead go to Danco furniture, which is in Hatfield. They have many of the same beautiful wood products and are extremely professional, courteous, and respectful. They deliver on time and don't try and trick you or sell you a lesser product. I went and ordered the same bedroom furniture for A CHEAPER PRICE and I got exceptional service. read more

"Steer Clear" as several other reviewers have described in detail. Arrogant does not do justice to the attitude from top down; but showing one item on showroom and delivering a cheaper version; and than not acknowledging it or offering to rectify it until I called the manufacturer and the consumer affairs office who confirmed that this company has "issues". Went in prepared to buy a couch and mattress but left after forty mins because no one waited on me.

a real disappointment. I could not wait to shop at Fly By Night, I was moving from some distance and had been looking on line at several stores in the area. I purchased a futon frame/mattress/cover. On the second day after delivery the frame broke. I called the store, was told it was from my improper handling. First, the delivery people spent no time showing me how to open and close the frame, there was no instruction sheet, and frankly, I am a small woman, I don't think I should be strong enough to break a frame that should be strong enough to allow for a lot of weight and movement. When the frame broke, it ripped the cover. First the warehouse offered me the chance to pick up a part and fix it myself??? I said no, I expected the store to fix it. They sent someone out - but without a cover. Then I was told the large hole in the cover could be sewed at the store, or I can buy another at cost. I don't think after 2 days I should be forced to make another purchase, or accept a repair that won't look as nice - I will never ever shop there again. The prices are premium and the customer service is substandard - worst I have experienced. read more
