This past summer was definitely the season of meeting my phobias head on. I have this thing about live fish- I am deathly afraid of them. Years and years ago, I passed out in my kitchen while preparing whole trout because I thought I saw it twitch and was still alive . I hate Koi fish with a passion and have nightmares about being pushed into a pond writhing with them... My palms are getting sweaty just thinking about it right now. But despite all of this or maybe because of all this sort of nonsense, during a trip to Colorado, I went fly fishing and found out that fishing.. and live fish... aren't that scary. Both are actually sort of fun... and cool. Since I've never been fishing before, I have no point of comparison for an outfitter that specializes in it but based on my experience with them, I'd have to say I was very impressed. Our guide Fletch picked us up from our hotel early in the morning and took us back to the shop so we could sign some waivers, get our 1 day fishing licenses ($9 each), and grab our gear. We headed out to a local fishing hole, put our gear on, got a quick lesson, and were fly fishing in no time. At first I thought it was boring... My arm started hurting from hurling the line continuously and I would gaze off into the distance and lose my train of thought and focus on what I was actually supposed to be doing which was fishing. And it was cold... I think my waders had a hole in it because the front of my jeans were really damp and I kept shivering while I stood waist deep in the water. Things started to get interesting when I could feel the fish biting on my line... From then on I was pretty entranced and intent on landing at least one fish... And I did! I landed two! We kept our guide Fletch busy going back and forth unhooking our fish and taking photos (I had a hard time trying to pick up the fish because I was so scared but it was important for me to document the fact that I actually caught one so I eventually grasped it in both hands...) but it was such a blast and I was actually really disappointed when I realized it was time to head back. We didn't get to keep our fish since all outfitters in the area practice catch and release (from what I was told, eating the fish from those waters wasn't really a good idea any way) but lots of pictures were taken to document the experience. It was a fantastic day and I'm really glad the Fly Fishing Outfitters went to so much trouble to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. 5 stars all the way. read more

Me and my brother-in-law flew up from Florida and had one day to open to fish. So we came in to their store paid half down and scheduled a trip for the following day. We came back in the morning of our trip, bought our licenses and waited for the guide. While waiting we heard the clerk calling the guide to find out why he wasn't there yet, but he had no clue he was supposed to work so no trip. The clerk said the owner "John" forgot to schedule a guide. Guess what John didn't forget to do? He remembered to charge me for the other half of the trip that same morning. The clerk said he didn't know how to refund our money so we'd have to wait for the owner who he couldn't reach on the phone. I wish this was the end of the story. I called my CC company when we returned only to find out they only refunded me half the cost of the trip. I called the fly shop several times leaving messages over the next week and a half, but they never called me back or emailed me about the mix up or my refund. Finally the the CC company said they refunded the other half of the trip, but not the cost of our licenses, which we never got to use. I hire guides often on trips so I'll say this to my fellow fishing travelers: Avoid this shop! Mistakes happen, but how I was treated after the problem shows the real character of this place and the ownership. read more

$900.00 to fish in a man made pond!!! Completely taken advantage of!! Spent $900.00 to fish and caught absolutely nothing. We were taken at a local man made pond!! Paid for 2 guides and a half day trip - complete waste of time and money. No warning of what day would be like. Our guides Martin and Daryl we're lazy and really didn't care anything about the $900 we spent for a fun family adventure. I called the shop to express my disappointment and got nothing but sad excuses. We were rafting on lower eagle today and saw tons of people fishing having a safe and amazing time. I highly recommend staying away from these guys. Fished with Vail Valley Anglers 2 years ago - a completely different and awesome experience with them!! read more

We were on a family vacation and decided to go fly fishing for the first time. Owen and Hunter were great and both were very helpful and patient with our boys (ages 8 and 13).
