Attended a going away happy hour on Friday (3/7). The staff was very accommodating, and we basically had the run of the bar area. The decor is what you would expect from a stereotypical Mexican restaurant in the US, and everything was clean and tidy. No complaints. I got shrimp and al pastor tacos to go. They weren't bad, but they weren't anything special either. I probably wouldn't go back on my own for just food, but I anticipate that I'll have the opportunity to try other food items at future happy hours, and I'm hopeful of being able to give this rating a bump. read more

Good, cheap, and plentiful portions. A true dimond in the rough, worth a trek Finished up a soccer tournament, looked for dinner and 3 of our options went up in smoke. So we looked for new places, and found this random hole in the wall Mexican place that was still open. So we made the trek to try this place out. The area is in the middle of an industrial park. an off-shoot from the main drag and tucked away. Once inside, the place is fairly nice! Lots of open space, friendly folk, and interesting decor. The chips were fresh fried and salsa was fresh, salty, limey, and very delicious. We opted for 7 tacos, guac, churros, and queso dip. The Queso was tasty, beefy, cheesy, and a great dip. The guac needed a little salt but it was a good chunky guac. The tacos were all solid, but needed sauce to kick them to the next level. thankfully they provided a very good roasted red pepper sauce, a green tomotillo sauce, and a strong brown mole which is earthy and sweet with a little spice. The churros are pretty solid as well. crispy and sugary bits of fried dough. We had plenty of leftovers as well. The price is surprisingly low for the quality you get. The portions are large and with everything being as tasty as it has been, this is a place I would be more than willing to make a trek to. We have been twice and the food, drinks and service were great! Tonight we had the La Presidenta margaritas, queso flameado, a huge shrimp burrito and the pork enchiladas and we really enjoyed it all and have leftovers! Our server did a great job too!!!! read more

I was sad to see the metro cafe leave but extremely happy Fogata came. This was the first place I ever ordered a Torta and it made me a fan for life! Bread was super fluffy, buttery and soft. We came at around 6pm with a party of 4 on a Sunday night and there was only one other party besides us. The service was a little slow considering how empty the restaurant was. The chips were a little oily and some had even lost their crunch, but the salsas that came with the chips were all very flavorful and refreshing. I ordered the enchiladas, which were tasty but smaller than expected. It was the same case for my friend's order of flautas. Not sure what happened besides the obvious move from the west end of Hartford, but the food and service has declined considerably. Did the restaurant's management or ownership change hands? Went about a month ago and noticed it was starting to decline. I gave them the benefit of doubt thinking they might have just had an off night and that maybe the move to a mostly industrial area had something to do with the lack of patrons. However, going last night was a mistake. Arrived at 6:30ish to a once-again empty dining room. There was a few cars in the lot and the bar area had a few patrons. Music from the bar was obnoxiously louder than normal. We were greeted by the hostess who mumbled we could sit where we wanted. Waiter mumbled through our drink orders. Mumbled that they were out of chips and salsa. And after taking our order, came back to mumble they were also out of puerco. I'm fluently bilingual and could barely understand most of what he said. At this point, it was quite apparent how the rest of the experience would be. Appetizer we ordered (chicken quesadillas) were mediocre at best. Presentation was sloppy and they were served without utensils and with a small mound of sliced lettuce and chopped tomatoes. No sour cream (or explanation that maybe they were out?). No small plates for us to use so we just dug in and shared off the platter. Main courses came out. One daughter ordered carnitas tacos (mostly okay); other daughter ordered red enchiladas (she left about half of her plate after saying there was simply too much of a canned sauce taste). I ordered the milanesa chicken which wound up to be the thinnest and smallest breaded cutlet I've ever had. I'm talking almost paper thin and just as dry too. I wound up eating the rest of my daughter's enchiladas cause I was hungry and didn't want to complain or go elsewhere. The rice was over cooked and almost to a mush consistency. Beans were okay but definitely not the same as before. Tortillas were clearly store bought. Bill came to just over $50 which was normal for us. We didn't get a final receipt though and I just wound up taking a photo of the signed receipt. This did seem a bit sketchy, but I wanted to get out of there. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. I'd love to say I'd go back cause I love to support local businesses. I was so impressed when they were in the west end. But I just can't bring myself to doing so with other Mexican options closer to me. read more

This was fantastic. I've been looking for great Mexican in the Hartford area after living in Los Angeles and Mexico. This hits the spot. I also love Sayulita in Glastonbury too but this is a bit more casual and has different, more standard menu items. Everything we tried was delicious: carnitas, barbacoa, carne asada, chicken and pastor tacos, as well as taquitos! The tortillas tasted fresh and everything came with a spicy salsa and a fresh pico. Also props for their covid readiness - they had a swipeless card reader, social distancing flow signage and hand sanitizer at the register that is offered before you grab your bags of food. As recent transplants to Connecticut from South Texas, we're especially eager to find good Mexican food that reminds us of home and our Mexican roots. Sadly, this place didn't do the job. Service, though friendly, was spotty, at best. Despite the restaurant being nearly empty, we had to wait a while for beverage service. Our server told us the kitchen was out of avocados and steak. Not a great start. Also, no Coke products. What kind of self-respecting Mexican eatery doesn't serve bottled Mexican Coke?!? Because it was a cold afternoon, I ordered caldo de res (beef soup) and my partner ordered menudo (tripe stew). He asked if it was very spicy and was told it wasn't. When he asked if he could have just a spoonful to sample, he was told it's against policy and that he'd have to pay for a portion if he wanted a taste. (We're learning that most South Texas customs don't translate to New England--something we understand and respect.) The food was O.K., but not special. Although the menudo turned out to be quite spicy, the rice that accompanied the soup and the stew was atypically bland. (And no tuétano in the caldo? What's caldo without bone marrow?) The meat in the caldo was too much bone and gristle, and too little meat I could dig into or roll into a taco with the off-the-shelf corn tortillas that are served. Finally, a note about prices, which are high, considering serving sizes. A small-ish bowl of soup is about $16, which, exorbitant by South Texas standards, appears to be the local average. My partner order a single taco to offset the spicy menudo. It never arrived. While we're glad we tried another one of the relatively few Mexican places in Greater Hartford, we won't be returning to this one any time soon. read more

I love to support new restaurants. I love "mom and pop" joints. But this one was the worst. The service was great. The people were kind but the food was not. I ordered 3 tacos. Pollo, carne asada, and al Pastor. All the meat tasted completely expired and they tried to rekindle it with some heat. My stomach was upset immediately. I was sick for the next 3 days. Awesome food! They served three different fresh tasting sauces to start with tortilla chips. Friendly service and several entrees to choose from. The waitress selected a dish for me to get a true sampling of the authentic Mexican cuisine, Platillo Oaxaqueno. It was very well presented and plentiful! My friend ordered the steak quesadillas. Fogata about this place before trying it. My wife and I tried it (she got tostadas and I got the burrito meal) and while it tasted good, we were both sick the next day. The service was also rude to my wife when picking up, and they marked our order, in the app we ordered on, ready 5 minutes before it was actually ready. I had the Chile Rellenos plate today. The menu said that it came with a salad. The salad consisted of chopped tomatoes and onions with a shred of lettuce. And some of it was placed on top of the Chile Rellenos. That caused the batter on the Chile Rellenos to become soggy. Also the beans that came as a side dish were very liquid. I had no idea this place existed until the rave review in the Courant. It's worthy of the raves. We loved the salsa that came with the chips, very fresh and spicy. I had the carne azada burrito which was very good and filling. The star I thought, was the tomatillo sauce that came with my partner's delicious enchiladas. It's seriously good. Checked out Fogata for the first time today for Pandemic friendly lunch. We are attached to other local favorite Mexican places so this was a bit of a leap. My veggie taco platter (3 tacos, beans, and rice) was fresh and delicious. My companion enjoyed her chicken enchiladas just as much. Crispy taco chips were wonderful too. My husband and I went to this place based on the good reviews but now I'm wondering if this reviews are fake. We were there on a Friday and the place was empty. The service is very unprofessional, (or maybe the waitress was having a bad day because she looked very aggravated like if she did not want to be there). Not only the service was horrible but it was extremely slow, the food took over an hour and on top it was cold. We were basically the only ones there so there's no excuse for the service to be very slow, the food late and cold. If you want to have a good dinner after a long day of work this is not the place for you. Will not be returning, horrible customer service. read more
