I was supposed to meet coworkers on Cinco de Mayo but they decided on another restaurant. I decided I would try it today for lunch. I placed my order over the phone. The young man who answered the phone was very courteous and obliging as I requestdd pico de gallo. I ordered 2 al pastor pork tacos. I pulled over and tore my first taco doooown. The pork was so tender and flavorfull you will also bite into a piece of pineapple. It was an explosion of flavors. When I walked in to pick up my order they have sitting outside as well as inside. Stopped in with my neighbor on this rainy Saturday, and the place was steady with guests. Located in a plaza, and situated in a business zoned area of Windsor. Warmed taco chips and salsa were delivered when the waitress greeted us. I ordered a Sprite, my neighbor ordered a strong tequila drink After viewing the menu, (no lunch menu) I ordered the three hard taco dinner with refried beans and Mexican rice. My neighbor ordered the fish tacos, along with rice and beans After about 10 minutes, the dinners arrived. Let me first say my neighbor absolutely loved the fish tacos. She said they were flavorful and had a great little kick to them. I tried them and was like OK. They're just OK. My three tacos with beef were bland. There was no flavor to the ground beef. I don't even think they salted it. There wasn't any color to it and it looked like it was boiled if you can believe that. Add some lettuce, tomato and standard Mexican cheese, and that was the taco. Did I mention it was also watery on the bottom of the taco, and the taco ingredients fell out due to the moisture. Ugh! Service was good, not great, but good. The restaurant itself was very clean. This wouldn't be a place for me to return to, even though it was less than 15 minutes from my house. So put me in for one and done. This was an adorable place to have dinner. I loved the side and the service was great! The food came out quickly too! I think I'm kind of obsessed with Mexican style food. I ordered their chicken quesadilla and it was del ious! It was a nice balance of chicken and cheese. The side toppings were a nice touch. I love topping my quesadilla with guacamole. For dinner we shared the chicken and steak fajitas. I love that you have an option of corn or flour tortillas. Stopped at Huasteca when we were absolutely starving and craving Mexican food. The menu is really big with lots of great choices. The interior is also very pretty with nice decor. The free chips were really good, the salsa was a little mild but still good. After we placed our order, our food came incredibly fast. I was honestly so surprised when I saw the server coming around the corner within 10 minutes of placing our order. Arrived on a Sunday evening. About 10 patrons inside. Greeted by, "You picking up for Jose?" I said no. Then, "Who for?" This was being said from about 15 feet away from the waitstand. My friend and I were in the area and searched some places to eat. We searched on Yelp and we chose this restaurant. Huasteca was inspired by the Historical Huasteca region in the southeast of San Luis Potosí, the northeast of Querétaro and Hidalgo, and the extreme north of Veracruz and Puebla. The restaurant had a beautiful sitting area outside but we chose to sit at the bar. I ordered a Passion Fruit Margarita and wow!!What a punch. It was strong, but I don't mind a nice strong drink. The passion fruit balanced the drink with the citrussy notes. Additionally, I ordered the Birria Tacos. The first bite was love at first sight!! What a mouthful of flavor explosion. The meat was cooked to perfection. It was very flavorful and you can definitely can tell the meat was cooked for hours. The pickled onions were delicious and the Birria Consommé was so delicious that I could of just ate it by itself. What a great dish. We also met the Bartender Alfie who was very informative and had a great personality. He informed us that the owner owns Frida's Restaurant in Hartford, Connecticut. What a great tip because I will check that spot out to. I've heard a lot of great reviews about that restaurant from the Yelp community. Sooo definitely mixed feelings on this spot. Some friends and I wanted to hang out for Cinco de Mayo and came across this Mexican restaurant on Insta. We ordered a sampler for an appetizer. The only thing on the sampler we liked were the mango habanero wings and the chicken taquitos. The quesadillas and nachos that came with the sampler were very basic. We also ordered empanadas, which had a perfect yellow coloring and crispy outside. The problem was both empanadas, chicken and beef were stuffed with potatoes. The potato meat ratio was not even close. Had heard about this restaurant on instagram from a fellow yelp reviewer. I knew I had to try it when seeing the birria tacos.. They did not dissapoint! I would have ordered another plate if I could finish them. Walking in, we were greeted with a smile and asked if we'd like a table or booth. We were sat promptly, chips and salsa were brought to the table right away. The salsa is actually one of my favorites from mexican spots I've been. Perfect consistency and touch of heat. We had ordered the queso dip for an appetizer. If I'm being honest, we didn't eat it. Was graciously taken off of the bill. It unfortunately tasted like melted american cheese. My visit to Huasteca Restaurant was the rare instance in which my decision to Yelp search for restaurants while in a new area did not work out. Huasteca, which is a Mexican Restaurant in Windsor, has 4.5 stars on Yelp. The restaurant appearance and service were both fine. I ordered the Enchilada de Mexico, which consisted of a chicken enchilada, a cheese enchilada and a beef enchilada, with a verde sauce, white sauce and rojo sauce, respectively, designed to emulate the Mexican Flag. It also came with rice and beans. I enjoyed the chips and salsa, which had a bright and fresh flavor. Otherwise, I found the meal disappointing on almost every level. The appearance didn't work. I've ordered this type of enchilada dish before because it's a good way to try more than one flavor profile. If you look at my pic, you'll see that the sauces don't work color-wise. Not red enough. Not green enough. I don't think I've ever scene worse execution of this concept color-wise. The seasoning was off across the board. The beans and rice both needed more salt. The ground beef in the rojo enchilada and the chicken in the verde enchilada were not seasoned in a memorable way. The sauces were barely noticeable. The cheese enchilada was the biggest miss. The filling consisted of strands of shredded cheddar cheese. Some strands were almost melted, some were somewhat softened by heat, but many strands had the texture of right out of the grocery store bag. I captured this in a pic. Huasteca is located in Windsor. Not far from the highway but it's in a small plaza near a busy industrial area. Huasteca has been in Windsor for 3 years now. It's roomy indoors ( booths and tables) with also outdoors seating area soon! And did you know they have a sister restaurant in West Hartford?! They do! Their sister restaurant is Fridas. If you Love Fridas you will love Huastecas and if you haven't tried none add them Both to your list! Huasteca serves delicious Mexican food, appetizers, drinks, main dishes and they have a great Happy Hour from Monday-Friday 2pm to 6pm. Our dinner started off a bit slow but everything turned around and staff was great, pleasant and just wonderful. The dishes that were served had such great flavor! Very fresh and well seasoned. The steak was very tender as well! We learned that Victoria is a popular drink/ beer in Mexico and it's not sold much around here . If you go and visit, try out the beer Victoria! Elote is a street food, it's corn on the cob with Mayo, chili powder, cheese and lime! Felt like a little kid eating that corn! Lol fun, messy but Sooo Good! Huasteac is a nice Mexican restaurant nestled in the middle of Windsor and if you're from the area, maybe have driven past it a few times. Came here out of curiosity and I'd say that my curiosity is peaked. As a family who enjoys Mexican cuisine, we are always looking for good eats that we can add to our local list of sports. There is ample seating and the staff are warm and friendly. We started off with the complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was good with a little kick but not too much to shy the children away. For our entrees I ordered the Carnitas guerrero and my wife had the tacos. For my carnitas guerrero I really enjoyed the pickled onions and when I had the pork with the onions the guacamole and the pico it was a really good bite. Sadly my pork was mostly fat and I believe on the description of the dish the pork was supposed to be spicy and it was not. The rice was forgettable not bad but not great either and refried beans are refried beans. My wife had the tacos pastor and a steak taco. I should have ordered the tacos because they were tasty. The only drawback was that it was a little cold. I ordered the Paloma for my drink and it was really good. Overall I want to like this place and I think I do so I will have to make another trip here to try the tacos for myself (no sharing with the wife ) and there were a few other drinks that I want to try as well. When we walked in to Huasteca for lunch take-out yesterday, the first thing that caught our eyes were the big plexiglass dividers between the dining room tables, giving the appearance that each table was really in its own little safety pod. We're not quite ready to sit down in a restaurant quite yet, but we love Mexican food and agreed to try this newish restaurant because we were in town. You'll find it in the Day Hill Plaza in the space formerly occupied by Zocco's. They do have a nice lunch menu in the $10-$15 range, but that's only an option during Monday to Friday, so we went to the dinner menu to select a Chicken Quesadilla DInner ($11.99) and a Diablo Shrimp Dinner ($16.69). The chicken quesadilla was huge and can easily be divided into 2 portions. It was served with lettuce, pico de gallo, sour cream, guacamole and a lot of tasty chicken. My Diablo Shrimp came slathered in a fiery red chile sauce, with a lot of mushrooms, a big scoop of white rice, a small salad, and eight big shrimp. Again, this easily can feed you twice. Our meal came with a bag of freshly made tortilla chips and a container of thin but very delicious salsa. Service was terrific -the young lady who took our order was as pleasant as could be, and when the manager saw me taking a picture of a mural, he told me there was also one in the bar and he invited me to check it out and photo that one too, which I did. This place used to be very delicious, however I had a very bad experience with my take out order. I called to offer a chance for them to make it right and the lady that answered was very rude. I asked for the manager and a man answered saying his mother wasn't there and that he would take my information and have her call me. This is very disappointing because I referred so many co-workers and family members to their establishment. This is a hidden gem in Ct!! Such a beautiful experience from the moment you enter. This beautiful mural depicting a waterfall inspired from the Huasteca region in Mexico ! Another great mural in the dining room is very inviting and helps create a very unique vibe and atmosphere. My drink was a classic mojito. It was nice and refreshing and I was told you can make it any flavor you want for no additional cost. My husband had a nice Pacifico beer and our kids enjoyed strawberry and mango lemonades . So good!! We really enjoyed the table side guacamole and the chicken taquitos as appetizers. For our entrees we went with fish tacos, veggie fajitas, chipotle shrimp and steak and shrimp platter. This review should be a 3.5, let me explain. Arriving during Happy Hour, we both decided on a house margarita, we agreed that it really didn't measure up to others we've had elsewhere. The salsa while okay, fell short as well. My Burrito Supreme with shredded beef was an absolute knock out, great flavor and more than enough for dinner. My wife's Chile relleno didn't have a hint of spiciness; wasn't crispy, kind of lack luster overall, however; the refried beans and rice were excellent. For dessert we ordered the house made Tres Leche Cake which was absolutely fabulous. What really stands out at Huasteca is the warm friendly prompt service. I got the enchilada mole, which has good flavor overall even with the chicken filling being a bit tough and dry. We also got churros to share and those were delicious!!
