Foliage has really good tofu. I don't know how they cook it, but in any stir fry dish, it slaps (general tso's tofu, for example). Their "health food" menu is also good, and they don't fry anything--the tofu and vegetables, though pretty plain, come with a good sauce and the vegetables are well cooked. Very quick service. Went here once with a friend about 15 or 16 years ago. I have no idea who I went with, and I don't remember what I ate, but I decided it was time to go back. I ordered my usual: General Tso's tofu and Szechuan Tofu. I parked down a nearby street, ordered, then went back to my car to read until the food was ready. First of all, this was some of the best General Tso's tofu I've had in quite some time. It was a lighter-colored sauce, almost golden yellow, as compared to the dark maroon or brown General Tso's sauce most places serve. It was great! The Szuchuan tofu was great as well, though slightly less memorable. I haven't been served Chinese food in a box in a long time, so I took a picture because it looked hecka photogenic to me. They're good compared to the rest of the Chinese restaurants in the area, but compared to the best, something is lacking. Good flavor is definitely present, but Its the little details that I look for that restrains a 4 star rating. I like vegetables, so to get a general tso's lunch with only 2 little pieces of broccoli was disappointing and the fried wontons were just a hair overcooked, but still tasty and edible. The sweet and sour sauce tasted ok, but was watery. The several times I've been here, they always come close to what I enjoy, but always seem to miss the mark. read more

After moving here from NYC where I have Chinatown and Flushing, Queens' chinatown, I was hesitant to try a local take out place. But I drive past this place a lot and finally I was craving some Chinese spare ribs. So i decided to try them out. Not bad. Not bad at all. My spare ribs were marinated and the meat fell off the bone and they weren't dripping in sauce. I've had meatier ribs but these definitely passed my "rib" test. I also ordered moo shoo pork and again: very good. It's nice to know there's a place nearby that will hit the spot next time I'm in the mood for chinese. I recently ordered 2 quarts of wonton soup delivered because I was ill. It totaled $11 plus .77 tax. They charged my account $18.95! When I complained they nickeled and dimed me $1 for using credit card, enormous tip. Absolutely ridiculous. They're supposedly going to give me $2 back. Don't go there. I have gotten my chinese food from Foliage for as long as I've lived in East Haven. They have awesome food, very fast delivery, and are extremely friendly. And as a plus... they are very easy to understand over the phone. I am sure we've all had an experience calling for delivery food (from anywhere, really) and you are faced with a person who you can't understand! Rest assured, that won't happen with Foliage. Plus, the guy knows us by name, always gives us free soda and anything we need. I will be devout to Foliage for as long as I am in the area. Oh, but they did recently begin only accepting cash. But considering its purpose in the world, it's a good hole-in-the-wall joint. They've always been quick, that's for sure. And everything I've ever ordered there has at least been decent, especially the pork lo-mein, which is delightfully salty with copious amounts of tasty red pork.... not that flavorless, rubber band-esque shredded pork you find in many such specimens of its ilk. "The basic chicken and broccoli was swimming in dark sauce." Uh, yeah, would you like fries with that? You knew what you were getting into... Chinese Takeout - America's favorite repository for salty, sugary sauces served in excess over poor quality meat at bargain prices. This ain't P.F. Chang, it's U.R. Poor'n'hungry. Im soo disappointed they used to be good ! Im writhing this review because they have screwed my order soo many times im DONE with them . this time i order pepper steak with out peppers and for them to add shrimp . they gave me onions with a little bit of steak. I understant they probably weight the meat and by me not wanting the peppers they probably would've had to add more meat to fill container well NO thay added as much onions possible! I would've prefer to have less food and not to open an container full of onions! And ofcourse they forgot to add the shrimp. read more

They're more deserving of 3.5 stars, but until Yelp steps up their half star game, three will have to suffice. Better than average Chinese food, plus they deliver which is like finding a needle in a haystack around here. My out of town friends are always shocked when they suggest delivery on lazy movie nights. HA! Delivery?! New Haven County problems. Anyway, it's typical Chinese food. It's better than most other places, and it's consistent. Whenever I get any kind of fried rice, I always request it spicy, however their version of spicy almost requires a trip to Yale due to third degree pepper induced burns. Ouch! Just stick with hot sauce, or proceed with caution. I've never had a problem with delivery. I've had them deliver to various locations in New Haven, and all the way to the other side of East Haven (Foxon) without any issue. If you are in East Haven and want some Chinese food this place will do! The pork lo mein has big pieces of pork in it which is a nice change from the cubes you normally get. The staff is really friendly and there is a $10 min for cards. Will go again if I'm in the area. read more

Good food, but never tell them they forgot something from your order. They will tell you "you're wrong". I ordered chicken teriyaki on a stick, which they DID NOT put in my carry out. I called them out and they totally questioned me. Told me the lady that packed my food put it in the box. I was literally going to return all my food and get my money back. Customer is always right. In the end they all went into the office and looked at the security camera, and guess what! I got my chicken teriyaki on a stick. Apparently they have cameras on the workers who put the carry out food in boxes. Did not appreciate the third degree. Only went here once. They are a rip off. I order two meals one was broccoli and pork fried rice and one with chicken wings with white rice. My friend doesn't like chinese food. Now I paid twenty bucks and got the brocoli and chicken and rice and fried chicken wings with no white rice. I call and say they forgot it (mind you the order says I asked for white rice). The boy tries to find out what happened and says I paid 8 bucks for just the wings. The exterior is dingy and unkempt in appearance. The part of East Haven that Foliage inhabits is run-down and unpleasant. Parking is difficult at best. The food on the other hand is great. Nothing wrong with it. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. I've been regularly ordering from Foliage for 10 years and it has never let me down. This is not a gourmet Chinese food experience, but it is a good stable take out level Chinese place. If you have a hankering for Chinese food and you find yourself in East Haven, this is the one that should be contacted. Good value, large portions, speedy service. The food at this restaurant is great. The delivery is about 30 to 45 minutes and the delivery people are always friendly and polite.

Worst delivery service in the area. Took 2 hours and 12 mins to get our food. Called after 90 mins to make sure our order was coming and was hung up on. This is not the first time. This is an amazing little restaurant which has the best Chinese food in the area. I lived in New Haven for many years and had lots of Chinese food. When we moved to EH, it was a great surprise to find this place after a trying a couple of others that were terrible. by the way I found it because of the reviews here and tried it. It is so good we serve it to friends who also are impressed. We always use delivery and it is freshly cooked. They call from the car and then bring it to the door.
