I loved this place! I met up with a group of friends here with our hopes for some good pizza. This was my first visit to John & Maria's in East Haven. Wow! The place was vibrant, the staff friendly, service on point and the pizza was absolutely delectable! We ordered multiple apps and a variety of pizzas and all was fantastic! A New Haven style pizza but with an East Haven flair. Thin crust, char, great tasting sauce and cheese. The clams casino pizza was hands down perfect. Comparable to the big New Haven pizza biggies in all ways. Foxon Park sodas available. I was so impressed and highly recommend. Restrooms and the entire establishment very clean and well organized. Large parking lot. I will retrurn.

This place is so good that I'm surprised the rating isn't higher. Maybe people from CT have higher standards for pizza. But coming from Manhattan the pizza here is fire. And the pasta portion is big enough for 4 people!! The arugula pizza is the best I've tried. The clams one is also solid but a little fishy (which is to be expected). For pasta, get the Alfredo or spicy vodka and you won't be disappointed. Call ahead for pick up otherwise you might need to wait a while!

We celebrated my grandmother's 94th birthday today at John and Maria's. We had approximately 22 people in our party. The food was delicious, especially the eggplant Parmesan and the stuffed mushrooms. We also loved the J & M salad....so good! The service was great, our waitress was attentive and our water carafes were always filled.

We went on a sunday afternoon and the place was packed. It has cozy interiors and ambiance. A complete family place. It also has amazing service and hospitable staff. We got some seasonal and popular selections off the menu. The garlic bread was super delicious, cheesy and buttery. Zuccini flower fritters were not what we expected and we couldn't taste the zuccini flowers in them. The pizza was one of the veggie specialties of the place and it was a little bit of a letdown. The pizza was cooked nicely but I was not a fan of the cheese. This is just my opinion. I was just not a big fan of the cheese. It was loaded with veggies just how I like it. It was a generous size pizza. In general, the restaurant is priced a little expensive.

First timer, I Will be back! Had the shrimp fra diavolo-Outstanding Great sauce, linguine al dente (as it always should be!) Sauce wasn't Too spicy (as can sometimes happen ) Nice atmosphere, friendly (I'm guessing locals/regulars crow) Good, attentive service I sat at the Bar and sometimes that doesn't happen, as bartenders are understandably spread thin with responsibilities Overall great experience

Loving the outdoor vibes. The food is incredible and the waitress was very kind. My son had spaghetti and I had chicken cutlet pizza. 10/10. Let's go baby.

My husband and I tried this place on a whim. It was a very busy Friday night, lots of take out pizza's passed by us on the way in. I order the chicken marsala and my husband ordered cheese pizza. He said the pizza was good but he prefers our usual pizza places instead. My chicken marsala was tasty. I also order a white wine sangria that was excellent! Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. We shall return.

Found out about this place cuz of Portnoys review. My band and I decided to go after our gig at a local brewery and we were not disappointed. Service was super friendly and fast. Good beer selection. The calamari was just right. Definitely fresh and the breading was light and fried to a light golden brown. Pizza was some of the best I've had. Crust was not overdone. Love the sauce. And plenty of toppings. I had to take a pie home with me for the family.

This is a local family owned business that has been around for generations. I use to come here to get my dad a eggplant sub. He ate them all the time and lived to 103. I am not giving the sub the credit for his longevity, but it did make him happy. I love their Broccoli rabe sub and get it anytime I'm in the area . First of all Marie makes it fresh every day. It is not oiled and has a nice present of garlic. The bread is fresh every day and Is delicious. I tried to make it at home, but mine is never as good as the one Marie makes. This restaurant is in a good location and does a good business. It has outside dining and plenty of off street parking.

We haven't been to this place in a while, but stopped in this past Saturday and had an excellent experience. Quick courteous service, and an excellent pie. My only problem was with the perimeter crust, which seemed dried out and unfavorable.

We get it - long lines create the illusion of demand, which then creates the feeling of novelty,…read moreuniqueness, value. That was what I thought about Sally's. Well the reputation of Sally's initially came from recommendations from acquaintances and uber driver. So I figured: Sally's must truly be the best pizza in New Haven the pizzz capital of USA (well that's what the signage at New Haven Tweed airport says!) So on a Monday mid-afternoon (July 13 2026) I made sure I put my Teams offline and drove to New Haven from Milford. Traffic on 95 but that's I guess typical. This doesn't happen in VA Beach where am visiting from; but not a novice in dealing with I-95 traffic since I've lived in Northern VA for 36 years. Anyway why am I describing all this? Is Sally's truly worth the hype, long lines and oh btw for pickup/delivery you get in line to order, and have to come back 45 minutes to pick up your order!?? The notable thing is that service is a 4 for takeout. You have to wait a few minutes for the staff who takes orders to be at his station to take the order. He disappears for minutes. But ordering was quick and when they tell you ready gif pickup by 4:15pm, it was ready (but of course got to get in line for that too!) The answer is: only if you don't want to drive to NY to get really great pizza. I ordered the garden (signature) pizza. It looked like a garden alright: vibrant green not overload of red pizza sauce or overly sprinkled cheese. The crust was pretty thin (way I like it) but not as thin as real pizza in Italy. The toppings were fresh. But it was on the bland unseasoned side. I'd give the pizza a 3.

With that being said, I ordered a sausage and pepperoni pizza and a spicy shrimp pizza. First off, the sausage and pepperoni pizza was immaculate. Also, the cheese was perfect with just the right amount of grease. Finally, the sauce had a savory tomato flavor which was excellent. I just wish they put more on the pizza. In similar fashion, the spicy shrimp pizza was very good as well. To breakdown, the shrimp tasted fresh and had great flavor. My only complaint was that the pizza was a little too spicy for my taste. It was founded by pizzaiolo Luigi Bernardo Jr. The Bernardo Family plays a large role in Greater New Haven's rich pizza history. Family patriarch Luigi "Gigi" Bernardo immigrated to New Haven from Naples, Italy in the 1960s. In 1974, Gigi opened his own business "Gigi's Bakery" on Chapel Street where he made baked goods and pizza. The family moved the business to Grand Avenue in 1982 and they continued to operate it until Gigi's retirement in 2001. He passed away in 2009. Gigi passed down his culinary talents to his seven children (including sons Luigi Jr, Frank, and Arsenio who all became pizzaioli). Frank runs the New Haven Pizza Truck while Arsenio runs the New Haven Pizza Place. Luigi Jr continued his late father's legacy when he started his own pizza truck business dubbed "Little Italy". The truck travels around Southern Connecticut to craft delicious wood-fired pizza pies at wineries, breweries and festivals. My family and I recently tried some of Little Italy's delicious pies when we visited Rosabianca Vineyards in Northford. The winery frequently hosts pizza trucks and other food trucks on the weekends. My wife and I had previously eaten Bernardo Family-created pizzas from the New Haven Pizza Truck and New Haven Pizza Place. We were excited to try Little Italy's offerings. After looking over their menu, we decided to order and share the "Margherita" (white fresh tomato, basil and garlic) and the "Mashed Potato Bacon" (with caramelized onion). The Margherita was more of an American-style Margherita versus a Traditional Neapolitan-style Margherita, but still very good. The real star for us was the Mashed Potato Pie! The mashed potatoes had a perfect texture and the bacon and onions were so flavorful. It was perfect! Both pies had excellent crust and they paired well with our wine.
