This place is so good that I'm surprised the rating isn't higher. Maybe people from CT have higher standards for pizza. But coming from Manhattan the pizza here is fire. And the pasta portion is big enough for 4 people!! The arugula pizza is the best I've tried. The clams one is also solid but a little fishy (which is to be expected). We went on a sunday afternoon and the place was packed. It has cozy interiors and ambiance. A complete family place. It also has amazing service and hospitable staff. We got some seasonal and popular selections off the menu. The garlic bread was super delicious, cheesy and buttery. Zuccini flower fritters were not what we expected and we couldn't taste the zuccini flowers in them. The pizza was one of the veggie specialties of the place and it was a little bit of a letdown. Found out about this place cuz of Portnoys review. My band and I decided to go after our gig at a local brewery and we were not disappointed. Service was super friendly and fast. Good beer selection. The calamari was just right. Definitely fresh and the breading was light and fried to a light golden brown. Pizza was some of the best I've had. Crust was not overdone. Love the sauce. This is a local family owned business that has been around for generations. I use to come here to get my dad a eggplant sub. He ate them all the time and lived to 103. I am not giving the sub the credit for his longevity, but it did make him happy. I love their Broccoli rabe sub and get it anytime I'm in the area . First of all Marie makes it fresh every day. It is not oiled and has a nice present of garlic. The bread is fresh every day and Is delicious. I tried to make it at home, but mine is never as good as the one Marie makes. This review is about the apizza. J&M's has a full menu of very, very good red sauce Italian classics. Maybe another time. We all know the Trinity. We can all go back and forth about allegiance for our favorite on Wooster or State. John and Maria's is on Foxon, technically in St'Haven, but this is quintessential 2nd tier N'Haven apizza. If you read other reviews.... 2nd tier is not a knock. It's just not the coal fired pies from the Trinity. As a native of the Elm, and an Italian American with pizzaiola in the family lineage, if there's anything I have the street cred to review.... it's apizza. In the Elm, we grew up on 2nd tier apizza. We make our own at home. It's better than almost anything you can get in NY, Boston, Philly. It's comfort, it's special, it's what makes us unique. John and Maria's is definitely in my top 10 of recommended in the state. I have a list. Won't mention the others here to give J&M's their due. What makes this place amazing is the reliability of quality. The char is medium, probably the best for those who think coal oven char is too deep. The sauce and toppings come right out to the cornicione... a hallmark of N'Haven apizza. Fair amount of leoparding. Muzz is browned evenly with good pull and no drag. Sauce is bright and balanced. Crisp but properly chewy crumb.This is good pie. Locals bonus tip... order the kids' mac and cheese. Shareable as an app, and when the apizza comes, use the cheese sauce to dip the cornicione in. You're welcome! Do yourself a favor and check out this old reliable institution on Foxon Blvd. With all the recent publicity of N'Haven apizza, this should be on your list of places to visit! We got a large pizza, which is apizza style, and the crust was super thin. The sauce was ok but the whole cheese would slip off the pizza, although overall still a good pizza. I have high expectations for New Haven area pizzerias, but was sadly disappointed in the pizza here. I had John & Maria's bookmarked ever since seeing the Barstool Sports pizza review in which there was a pie reviewed with the "lava" sauce effect meshing with loads of cheese which scored a 8.5. I must have visited on an off day in the kitchen since my pizza didn't have the lava effect, nor the amount of cheese expected. The pizza was very average tasting, with the crust being the best part...maybe they're skimping on ingredients after the great review. It'd be a 2.5-3 in most parts of the country, but didn't measure up at all to other New Haven area pizzerias I've tried. The patio area was absolutely packed, so the place seems to have a loyal following of locals. Although the service was friendly, the pizza experience didn't make an impression such that I'd return. read more

After seeing Barstool's review I thought I'd be getting a true New Have style coal-fired/brick oven pie. I ordered a Margherita and an eggplant (red) pie. The Margherita had 3 pieces of basil and it wasn't put on fresh (as you can see in the picture I've posted). The mozzarella and pizza as a whole was overcooked. The center of the pie stuck to the paper and it was impossible to pull a whole slice to eat. The eggplant pie was also way overcooked. Granted these were take-out, and I always give a second visit. Excellent! My parents have been raving about John & Maria's, so I requested we have dinner here on my trip to CT. Our server Zoey was so sweet and offered great service. I had the salmon Caesar, my mom had the eggplant marinara, and my dad had chicken Milanese. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals! All entrees came with a salad, and bread was served to start.
