Having an independent bookstore less than 5 minutes from my house is a blessing nowadays.  Instead…read moreof relying on the meager offerings at Target or Walmart, hitting the freeway to another town, or even delving into the depths of (yikes!) the Internet, I enjoy stopping by this Books Inc location.  While this storefront is not as big as some other bookstores, the selection is larger than you'd think.  Everytime I look for a gift for a family member or friend, I can find something that will fit.  In addition, this location is also the central warehouse for the company, so they have 2 warehouse sales a year.  I always find something for myself during these sales.  My wife & I stop by frequently and have befriended some of the staff.  They are always helpful with a suggestion for ourselves and when buying for others. This location is in a tricky part of town (on a busy corner).  While there are usually parking spots available, getting into the parking lot can be difficult.  Better to come east on San Leandro Blvd. or south on Washington Avenue.

I love how there is a great selection of cute gifts designed by local artists as well as community events. The children's section is inviting and offers so many books for all ages levels. I usually stop here before visiting Asia to pick up books for my niece and friends' kids. I'm always able to find an age-appropriate book that suits their current interest here. The event was great, and I was happy to support my friends by showing up! The staff was super nice, and the store is clean and well-lit, with a lot of great books on display. In what honestly feels like the only Barnes n Noble left in the Bay Area, this place stays packed, every time I've gone in here it's busy. They've got a huge selection of books & mags obviously, other products to buy as well. That can range from Lego sets you don't see in the stores, puzzles, kids toys, other book related novelty items They've also got a coffee shop on the right that's always got people sitting and eating/drinking at, a nice feature for when you come in you can grab a cup of coffee and a bite to eat too. That's where most people who want to chill and read go to. They've also got a super knowledgeable staff here too, which for my money is always really helpful.

And I love coming in to peruse their curated and staff choice books, which changes a d rotates frequently. There's a decent selection of books on sale at the back left corner of their store if you want to shop for deals. The kiddie corner has a seated area for families/children to spend a little time looking through the books before you purchase. There's also regular author readings/signings and poetry recital events during certain early afternoon or evenings at the bookstore, which is posted on a section of their wall, facing out from their left window display. If you had a rewards membership with Books Inc, you can transfer your points and member ID info over to the Barnes & Noble rewards program.

They have huge selection of middle eastern nifty decors, incenses and burners, necklaces, earrings, rings and other jewelry. Gelatin free candies, gummies and marshmallows and much more. I had a super negative experience when I went during their book buying hours to offer them some books, though. Their buyer was out during the buying window, and the person they had step in was shockingly rude. I was offering six recently-published books in new/mint condition from a popular radical independent press. She took one look at them (I'm pretty sure she had no idea what she was looking at), spat out a bunch of gibberish about different types of store credit so quickly that no one could have followed a word she was saying, and when I asked whether the amount they would offer in cash was the same as store credit, she basically sneered at me and said she would offer me maybe $6 (for three of the books I'd brought, about $75 worth), clearly implying that they were garbage and not worth anything. It was such a needlessly disrespectful and off-putting way to talk to someone for no apparent reason (if she wasn't interested in the inventory that's of course totally fine, but the rudeness was completely uncalled for). I haven't had my day ruined by someone working in a shop like that in a really long time. Obviously I said no thanks. I had just found this store for the first time a week ago and bought a haul of books, and was looking forward to being a frequent customer, but I won't be going back.

Great selection of books and the woman at the register was really kind. I didn't bring my wallet, as I had no intentions on spending money, but after seeing a few titles that were worth bringing home to my book collection, I asked if they accepted Apple Pay - they do! FYI, Apple Pay requires at least a 2.00 minimum purchase. Checking out was a breeze, and I now have three new books. I will definitely return the next time I'm in the area!

A very good bookstore on Broadway in Oakland!!…read more As I was walking back from Chinatown, all the books outside caught my eye, and they were very inexpensive. Outside offered 1 dollar, 2 dollar, and 3 dollar books!! Inside, the books were also marked down significantly, although not as much as outside. You just have to be ready to browse a little. Technically, this Bookstore is in Old Oakland, just a block away, walking distance, from Swans Market. I've been here a few times since!!
