Contacted Tideline Tours and booked a private session with Captain Weatherly. What a treat as she is friendly and outgoing, but most importantly skilled. We spent a short while getting to know my boat then started drills and instruction. Time flew as we were having fun, challenging my abilities, and seeing if we couldn't get into situations Weatherly couldn't handle (never did)! Worth every penny we spent and then some, and we were able to gather some delightful shells and even a starfish from Morris Island. The low down: This was my first time kayaking so I don't have much to compare it to, but I thought…read moreit was great. The 2 workers were knowledgeable and helpful and really were able alleviate my fear of getting washed out to sea! The most challenging hung part was figuring out how to get into the front gate! When you pull up, someone has to get out of the car, go in and find someone to open the gate. I don't recall seeing this written anywhere. we learned it after we sat at the gate for 2 min w/out anything happening. Once we got it, we had to sign some consents and then we headed across a field to the river. They provided a waterproof cell phone case, a map, and extra paddles in case the ones your using fall into the water. They provide a little tutorial on how to paddle which was very helpful. Then they load you in and send you on your way! it was so much fun!

You had the choice of solo or tandem kayaks. The instructor Luke did a nice beginners explanation of the flow of the river and how to paddle. The tour was two hours and he was really informed from types of ecology, Charleston history, changing tides, alligators, and pretty much anything else under the sun. I also have to say thank you to Luke, he would pull trash (empty bottles, cans, even a basketball!!) out of the water to dispose of correctly. You can tell he really cares about what he's doing and the area he's from. Please do yourself a favor, get on the water and enjoy seeing Middleton in another way.

Captain Johnny was fantastic! (And it turns out he was my husband's old High School English teacher! Haha, what a small world.) Captial Johnny knew his stuff and even trusted some of us to sail! (With his guidance, of course.) He was very laid-back and knowledgeable about his boat and the area. We got to listen to some good music and drink the drinks that we could bring on the boat. The experience was beautiful, relaxing, and so much fun - especially when we were able to go for a fun dip in the water. We saw several dolphins with him. he even offered to take our pictures. All you need to do is show up. You are given the kayak and paddle. It is okay if it's your first time, they taught my sister how to paddle, and it is very easy to learn. I would recommend brining water, sunglasses and a hat because depending what time of year it can get hot and sunny. Seeing the dolphins was such a beautiful experience.

It was the perfect day to be out on the water. There was a current heading out so it made it a nice arm workout. On the way back, it was almost like a lazy river as it brought us back. What a wonderful way to spend an afternoon and the area was beautiful and filled with so many amazing birds.
