Mexican cuisine continues to be a thorn in my side since moving back up here 6 years ago. I simply exhaust myself into the same thought over and over again. This is not the city for Mexican food, I do not care who tries to sway me. It simply. Does not. Work. The trend continues at this tiny cantina in Dyker Heights. I paid $40 for mediocrity, maybe even a step or two below it. The staff is friendly and cute, and speaking Spanish will get you further, but the food drops off significantly after the promising chips and dip. When I ordered the Queso Fundido, I was looking forward to a sharp Mexican blend with ground chorizo and some extra chips to boot. Instead I got what looked like blended Oaxaca cheese, an onion top, and some very unattractive bits of chorizo that were begging me not to eat them. So I did not. I ate the cheese because the cheese was pleasant, but the fact it comes with flour tortillas does not help its cause. When I ordered the Tortilla Soup, I was hoping for a nice blend of Mexican spices, shredded chicken, avocado, and tortilla strips. While I did get that, I also got bland flavors and a lack of any personality with the soup. In fact, it had a weird, milky, creamy broth that made me feel uncomfortable about finishing it. So I did not. When I ordered the fish tacos, I was expecting a nice piece of fresh fish, plenty of spicy pico, and an aoli to round out the whole thing. The breading for the fish is a tempura breading (bad call), and the fish they use is tilapia (an even worse call). I understand that this is not San Diego, but these two pieces of fish were practically begging me to put them out of their misery so I could send them packing for the Golden State at a later time. I duly complied. As I walked out I continued to wonder. Will this city ever get it right with a cuisine I hold close to my heart? Because right now, the future is looking bleak. What a hidden gem - I wish I knew about this place earlier. Came here for a small family dinner and everything was great - from the soup to appetizers and entrees. We ordered takeout from Fonda Garibaldi and tried the steak and salmon with fingerling potatoes. The steak had a nice smoky kick, was nicely charred, and cooked medium rare, which I appreciated. It came with rice and beans plus guac on the side. The rice and beans could've been better, but the guac was good. The pan roasted salmon was cooked well done yet still flavorful, served with a delicious white mole sauce that hit the spot for me that evening. The corn was too tart and lacked that grilled street corn style I was expecting. On the bright side, the churros was a satisfying sweet finish to the meal. If you're in the neighborhood craving modern Mexican cuisine, it's worth checking out. My food was packed and served up nicely and still warm, so I can only imagine they put real care into their prep and service. read more

Came here yesterday and it is always a solid choice for their fish tacos. I have tried both their short ribs and steak and was not a fan. ( a bit dry for my liking) Sadly they didn't have pina colada when I came yesterday cause I remmebered it being really good. The lady told me it was seasonal. I have tried their steak churasco before as well and it is good with. Smoky flavor. Definitely a big portion so if you order that it's probably best to share. Fonda Garibaldi was excellent! The fried fish tacos were perfectly crispy, fresh, and full of flavor. It comes with a barely spicy chipotle aioli and purple cabbage which adds nice contrast to the fish. The al pastor bowl was just as good--savory, well-seasoned, and super satisfying. I love Fonda Garibaldi. Period.Stop. This is my go to Mexican spot and Ive been ordering regularly for over a year now and have never been dissapointed. All the taco optios are amazing. My faves are the Chorizo,the fish,Al Pastor and Carnitas but Ive tried every taco on the menu and not a clunker in the bunch. If you want something more substantial the Guajillo rubbed Baby Back Ribs are terrific. The sauce is perfectly smokey its served with a large side of Mac and Cheese which me not liking Mac and Cheese at all i gave to my friend and she loved it but next time im gonna ask if i can swap it out for rice n beans which they make really well. The fried plantains are good and they make amazing fried Calamari as well. Everytime i order they toss in a small bag of chips and a cup of salsa gratis which is such a nice touch. This is an elevated Mexican spot and one I highly recommend. read more

Very disappointing. First of all I ordered on Seamless and just know the time estimate is about a third of the actual time you'll wait. About 40 minutes after I ordered I get a call that they don't have crabmeat for the soups I ordered, they offered me butternut squash which is hardly an equivalent and i don't like squash. Anyway they made the soup with shrimp alone which was supposed to be with crabmeat. Soup was good, a bit spicy which was fine but far too much zucchini. The tamales with cheese were also good, tasty. Biggest disappointment and what I recommend staying away from is the chicken tinga taco. If you read the description you're expecting chicken in a chipotle sauce which we all know what that looks like. What I didn't expect is shredded chicken drowned on top by a combo of guacamole and sour cream. After taking all of that off as I also don't like guac and it isn't mentioned in description I was left with the chicken you see in the picture shredded chicken which I added medium hot sauce to because there isn't the slightest hint of chipotle. All in all it was a disappointing experience and I won't be going back. After waiting 50 minutes or more I was expecting to walk into a busy restaurant with take out orders waiting to go yet it was completely empty and no other orders. read more

What a darling place! The staff, which is basically one lady, was superb. She was patient, kind, and friendly, everything you expected in the wait staff. It's a small, cozy joint with plenty of food options that will satisfy everyone. They have a tiny kids menu but don't worry, everything else is shareable and you basically wouldn't even care for the kiddie menu anyway. The loaded nachos were divine; add toppings to make it even more decadent. Prawns soup was surprisingly delicious and cleared up my sinus. So i decided on the nachos and the empanadas. The nachos were hearty and was dressed in guac, an interesting mayo based sauce, corn, cheese sauce and mozzarella. This order also included... extra chips and that astrofoodies is important because they pay attention to detail .... how many places you go to ... you order nachos to go and they include extra chips as part of the order... I came here with a friend on a weekday night. We were seated right away. We got 4 things on the menu and it was under $60 before tips. The food was tasty and portions were generous. The steak was very tender with a bit a char, I highly recommend getting that! Tacos were $7 for two, they were great value and yummy. Unlike the first few times I came here, their steak and eggs suffered a bit in terms of flavor and presentation. As you can see in comparison, the steak photo I took initially a year ago was a lot more vibrant, tasty, and aesthetically pleasing. This time the steak was very bitter and overly charred to the point where all you can taste is the char instead of the steak. However, it was indeed cooked medium rare, which was great. The beef rib bowl we got was also a bit tough instead of moist and tender like it used to be. Nonetheless, the price is still incredibly reasonable and definitely worth a try! Empanadas were okay but more floury than I'm used to; wouldn't necessarily recommend. Didn't really like the roasted chicken we ordered though, as we found it pretty bland and dry sadly. Absolutely love this place. The food is very similar to las chelitas (maybe owned by the same folks) but they do have their own flare. I've tried the beef short rib in a bowl- wow it's so delicious and tender. Their portions are huge and they give you free chips and salsa which is such a good bonus. We got some tortas, some tacos, a salmon entree, elote, chili relleno, and some chicken nugs with fries for the nephew. First of all, portion sizes are INSANE. The tortas are gigantic and messy, just like how I like my... tortas. I got the al pastor and it was so flavorful. I also got some tacos porque soy un niño gordito. They come 2 to an order. I split two very similar ones with my sister - the fried calamari and the fried fish. The fish was definitely the better of the two. The calamari surely felt like Italian/Mexican fusion (when in Dyker, right?), but it wasn't my favorite. My parents loved the salmon, even though they didn't expect the tiny bit of kick in the mole sauce. I ordered ahead and stopped in the pick up. It's not the largest place, with just a few tables. Their vegetables are always fresh and their food are always aesthetically pleasing. Compliments to the chef & restaurant owner! Also on top of it their prices are reasonable for what you get. It isn't as expensive compared to a lot of places in NY, so that's a definite plus. I ordered churros which tasted stale and the "white dipping sauce" tasted like it was just water & powdered sugar, very watery the chocolate one was just Hershey's chocolate syrup right out the squeeze bottle, very cheap tasting & watery! Wow...wow...I sorely underestimated this restaurant, I was expecting good food but I surely didn't expect it to be so gourmet! This is some white-table-cloth worthy food right here! A group of 4 of us sat down and were greeted with menus, water, and chips & salsa. The delicious chips just kept coming and coming! And then the entrees, wow! Beautifully plated, rarely do you see such attention to presentation in these parts of town. I have ordered take-out from thisFonda Garibaldi twice in a week to try out some of their menu items: the classic Mexican vegetable chicken soup, tacos (they're very generous with their taco fillings and sizing), and fresh made tamales (available only on weekends). This is lovely small shop in dyker heights, Brooklyn. I honestly enjoyed this place and loved the cultural decorations. My favorite must get dish from here are the fish tacos.
