Hole in the wall restaurant. You would never think that this little restaurant would ever be good. The food here is very good. They offer breakfast all day. Mexican is their specialty and they sure know how to cook. The waitress was amazing and had an amazing personality ready to answer any questions. She also let us know they had a deal that if you checked in on Yelp you would get 10% off each person's plate. Amazing what a great deal Their pricing is very reasonable. I used to come here all the time because I genuinely like the food, but the service is what stops me from coming anymore. When you dine-in, it takes 40 mins to get your meal and then another 20-30 mins to pay. You always have to remind the waiters to refill your drinks. I recently placed a pickup order. I ordered six meals. I called at 10 am and the woman on the phone told me it would be 25-30 mins. I arrived at the restaurant at 10:30 and was told they needed another 20 mins. I came back at 11 am and they needed another 10mins. I finally got my food at 11:20. While the food is good it's not worth the crappy service and the wait. read more

First time customer. Stumbled upon this restaurant via yelp. I'm a big fan of chilaquiles and I figured this would be a great spot to celebrate Fathers Day. I was wrong and should of taken my dad to La Barca around the corner. PRO: cute decor and cafe de alla is delicious. CON: Customer service is poor, despite the empty restaurant. I ordered two waters upon sitting. First server forgot so I waited approximately 10-15 minutes before asking someone else for a drink. I ordered the chilaquiles without onions. My meal arrives with tons of onions visible to the eyes. I remind the server that I had requested no onions. She returned quickly with a new plate of soggy and watery tortillas that were suppose to be chilaquiles. They were white in color and had no flavor. I still don't know if they were red or green salsa because there was no salsa in sight. I tried to eat them but the onions were still very apparent the second time around. I returned my plate and sat there drinking my coffee. They messed up the eggs I ordered on the side as well. I asked scrambled and got sunny side. At this point, I was over the entire meal. I brought up my disappointed to the guy at the cash register and got a 10% discount from the bill. Still didn't amount to the discount had he just removed the disgusting chilaquiles I didn't eat in the first place! I would not return to this location. This is my favorite breakfast spot in Downey. Everything tastes super homemade and the cafe de olla is the best I've ever had. I love the warm cafe de olla in the winter and the cold one in the summer. My favorite dish is the chorizo con papa torta. We found a Gem. I have seen Fonda Maria many times while searching for Mexican breakfast places nearby. I always scrolled past Fonda Maria. I finally decided to give it a try.. we went in to pick up breakfast and while we were waiting, the owner gave us a complimentary cafe de olla. Let me tell you, the best cafe de olla I have ever had. Amazing! We ordered enfrijoladas, chilaquiles, and huevos rancheros. Wow. She warned us that the chilaquiles and huevos rancheros were spicy. Boy, she was not kidding. They have a wonderful kick (be warned if you can't handle the spicy). The dishes were phenomenal, so phenomenal that we have been back the last two Fridays to try something different on the menu and ofcourse that amazing cafe de olla which by the way doesn't need any cream or sugar. Try it before you add it. So far we have had, enfrijoladas, huevos rancheros, enmoladas enchiladas (spicy), chilaquiles (spicy). Can't wait to try the rest of the menu. Visited for the first time several weeks ago. The owner was opening and I was there at 8am. First of all, it's hard to find a good breakfast place in Downey that's opening at 8am. I was placing an order to go. While waiting, the owner brought me a complimentary cafe de olla I haven't had such a coffee in a long time, and it's delicious! Its coffee brewed with a stick of cinnamon and is lightly sweetened with "piloncillo" a Mexican type of molasses. I was hooked! I have since been there every week for the past three weeks and have enjoyed my coffee and all their breakfast offerings! If you order something and you're told it's spicy, it's spicy! I absolutely love their breakfast enfrijoladas! I'm vegetarian so I ask for no chorizo, but let me just say that the restaurant is so cute and cozy and the owner and staff will make sure your visit is memorable. I have tried the enchiladas de mole and omg, delicious! The chilaquiles are tasty! I stopped by this morning and had to order a huge to-go container of their coffee. If you're looking for a nice quiet place for an early breakfast in Downey with good coffee, good service and delicious homemade breakfast, then give Fonda Maria a try! Then they brought grano on the side to make up. The lady asked if she wanted tortillas and never brought the tortillas. I got a plate of chilaquiles verdes because they looked good as a lot of customers were ordering them. I asked for mine with no onion and when they came out there was onion on the food.
