Great gluten free option for flavorful food. Basic counter service but your food will not disappoint.

Maybe my fellow Yelpers hyped it up so much my expectations were too high. The counter service was friendly but my food was just ok. I felt the protein serving was a little on the light side and flavors didn't really wow me. Whatever their spice options are I always ask for one more - meaning if they say 1-5, I ask for a 6. My cod and rice was just that - no veggies or anything. With the lack of fish, it was basically a big bowl of rice, some sauce, and some slivers of cod - in that order for quantity. The way they make it crispy is to cut it so thin the batter/breading is the same thickness as the fish. Maybe I'll try them again, maybe I won't. read more

Let's just say, I'm foo foo for Foo Dog Curry Traders! The premise is spot on: a quick, affordable, curry shop in the heart of Riverside. It's perplexing no one thought of this before. Thankfully, Chef Howard of 13 Gypsies acclaim, took over the space and has executed simply delicious curry options for the adventurous eaters in town. First impressions during opening week: order at the counter, no beer or wine, simple menu with curry, noodle dishes, and appetizers, friendly employees, 12 minute ticket times, sauce bar, no more than 25 seats in the whole joint w/ mostly two tops. On the first visit, I had to indulge in the House Special Chicken Curry, which comes with Jasmine Rice. For me, the texture of the sauce itself was pure heaven. That's my ride or die when it comes to curry. The flavors were classically rich, but I loved the hint of peanut butter. Really unique, however, really freakin' tasty. Foo Dog will be a go-to spot for service industry workers and those who only have 30 minute lunch breaks. I appreciate the order at the counter execution, but I'm not going to lie, I was pretty antsy when the group of four in front of me took 10 minutes to order. Good food, good times, good concept, cool vibe. Foo Dog has been one of my go to lunch spots lately and I have taken most of my friends there with great results. The menu is made of various curries, but there are some really cool appetizers and sides that are definitely worth a view. For appetizers, fan favorites seem to be the crab balls, full of crab and served with a mild aioli. It is not my favorite, but some of my friends have had serious fanboy moments over this dish. My personal favorite is the zucchini fries, crispy, delicate and full of flavor. I like them alone, but the dipping sauce is pretty amazing too. For entrees, the house noodles get really high marks, which I agree with. It is a rich flavor that you can spice up with Sriracha, homemade kimchi or even hoisin sauce from the spice bar. My personal favorite is the Chickpea with Masala, which I add chicken to and I have never heard complaints when I recommend this dish. I also hear great things about the red curry beef, but it's spicy description usually sways me to try something else. One dish that people love but I don't care for is the green curry. For me, it is a bland dish,but some people swear this is the best thing on the menu. The one time I had this fish, the fish was overcooked and was more solid crunch than crispy crunchy. But like I said, I am in the minority here. So in essence, the food here is fantastic, but the flavors are so different you may have to taste your way to a favorite. The food is AMAZING. Staff is friendly, decor is lovely, and the vibe is just overall wonderful. I got the butter chicken over fries with vegan chicken and I'm writing this as I'm still eating because it's SO good I couldn't wait to post a review. Food is amazing, staff is energetic, and I honestly don't have a single complaint about anything. Also, parking is open and easy. It's a Saturday night and there were tons of open spots. I ended up here because I went to another restaurant and it was so hard to find parking I got overwhelmed and left. I order from this restaurant quite frequently trough grubhub or ubereats. I get the spam fried rice, I know, sounds weird but I love it. We enjoyed lunch at Foo Dog Curry Traders recently. The restaurant itself is small, so not really set up for group dining. Most tables are for two, but they were nice about moving a couple of seats together to accommodate our group of four. A few outdoor sidewalk seats would make for a perfect solo or lunch for two on a pretty day. You order at the counter and everything comes in to-go containers so good for a take out meal. Being a first timer, they were super helpful in explaining everything on the menu, including the spice level, and the protein choices and while I like everything, I have definitely filed this place as a must try for my vegan family and friends. We started with the zucchini fritters, which were bricks of spiraled zucchini seasoned and deep fried with a house made dipping sauce of vegan basil mayo. Tasted pretty good but a little heavy on the salt level and greasy so definitely messy to eat. The better starter was the banh mi spring rolls. These were the soft chilled fresh spring rolls and while we were going to order the pork, the server encouraged us to try the vegan fried chicken and this was a great recommendation and yummy choice. The vegan kewpie mayo dipping sauce did not really add much to the rolls, but we would enjoy these again. For entrees we ordered a couple different dishes to sample a variety. The house special chicken curry was delicious with the Japanese sweet and spicy style curry, fresh veges and jasmine rice. The Japanese wild ginger and mushroom noodles packed a lot of flavor. My personal opinion was the noodles had a little too much salt, but my guests loved them. My favorite dish was the crispy cod and green curry. This mild Malaysian dish was packed with flavor and the fresh cabbage and carrots in the coconut milk and poblano pepper based sauce were delicious bites. The curry topped perfectly cooked jasmine rice. The serving size was generous so we appreciated already having the food ready to go so we could enjoy the leftovers for dinner. The best curry in Jacksonville is HERE! This restaurant is conveniently located close to Bold Bean in Riverside, so if you want a quick lunch break in between work/studying, this is the place to go. After reading many reviews, I settled for their chicken curry- it seemed like it's their most popular option. At first glance, I was a bit skeptic about whether I will be full when finished. But then I dug in and saw the amount of rice covered by the curry, and then quickly changed my mind. The dish had the perfect blend of seasoning that brings out the flavors in it, in addition to the spiciness that, in my opinion, makes a proper curry dish. It took some time to be ready, but that's only because it was made fresh. I was very impressed and high recommend that you try this dish specifically for your first visit. The prices are a bit high, but reasonable for the quality of the food. The ones displayed on the menu picture on yelp are lower than they were when I visited. I think the chicken curry is ~14 dollars now. But don't let this discourage you from going! It's hard not to become a regular once you try Foo Dog Curry Traders, and after learning that 13 Gypsies has ties with this restaurant, I made it my next destination. I got the Lion City lily with extra vegetables. The food itself was pretty good. The vegetables where exactly what I was hoping for. Zucchini and carrots were the perfect texture. The curry itself was piping hot which is always a make or break for me. I wasn't a fan of the texture of the rice noodles but that's personal preferences I suppose.   I did have a very odd experience with the staff member. If you're having a bad day, that one thing. We've all been there. But it's another thing  entirely to go out of your way to make someone feel unwelcome. I really don't know where to begin this review other than saying if I could give them 10 stars I would! The selection, go on the light side is phenomenal! My friend had highly recommended this restaurant in one specific dish that I had to strongly talk him out of getting it to try something new. The woman at the cash register was so knowledgeable of the menu and really tailored it to our individual tastes. My friend did try something different which I was right he was thrilled he did because now he has another favorite plus he tried my dish. The lightly toasted coconut shredding and the tofu was the best I have ever had! The lime curry sauce over the jasmine rice out of this world. My friend had some type of chicken noodle dish which was phenomenal and then we shared curry fries, WOW phenomenal. I'm not sure what I like best the food or the customer service either way they deserve TEN stars and I will be back!!! read more

Stopped in for a quick order of samosas before an event with my son- cool little place with the quick witted and charming M at the counter who was more than happy to spend a few minutes chatting while I was waiting for my order. Food was fantastic and while the kimchi sauce was a little spicier than I anticipated (yeah that first bite woke me right up) it was excellent. Looking forward to trying a few other options there. Great food and I love how vegan-friendly it is. The environment is definitely more of a grab-and-go feel and I personally wouldn't dine in here. Staff is nice and wait times are usually accurate. Only complaint is how expensive it is to eat here -- it costs at least $40 for two people, plus tip :( Their portion sizes aren't always what they should be for the price and sometimes I feel like it's not enough food. Came here with a good friend and she said this was a really good spot and I totally agree . It was pretty empty when we went there , it was only us lolll . Me and my friend both had the veggie samosas and they weren't your traditional samosas . They were round and delicious . And the sauce ? Let me tell y'all about the date chutney paste !!! It's so good . I could have eaten it by itself . They also had this kimchi sauce that was just delightful . The samosas were so flavorful and seasoned correctly. They were crunchy and soft and just so yummy . The area also is so cute and hipster ish which I love . I'll def visit this place again when I'm back in Florida ! Was not expecting this to be as good as it was. We were traveling through and since I'm gluten free I knew I needed to try this place! The curry is not spicy, it's more on the sweet side. It comes packed with veggies and the portion is quite big. Definitely enough for two people or leftovers for tomorrow's lunch. I gave Foo Dogs, another try! I ordered take out again, this time too. They've changed the take out containers, to something more sturdy, I appreciated that, since the last time, it was flimsy cardboard that leaked all over. I ordered, 3 entrees, and 2 orders of the veggie noodle rolls, that came to a little less than $60.00. Really, that's just way to much, for take out, but my daughter and her friend, wanted to try it. I paid for everything and went home, which is close by, to eat with them. My daughter and her friend, were both okay with their food, but only after doctoring and spicing it up! I on the other hand, was very underwhelmed again! My noodles all stuck together in a glob, hardly any veggies to speak of, the non existent sauce, and no taste at all!! I did ask my daughter and her friend, to try mine. They concur, it was disgusting. I had to throw mine, in the trash! The noodle veggie rolls were just okay, pretty tasteless and hardly any veggies. I'm not ever going back again, just to be further disappointed, not only over the expense of the menu, but worse the horrible tasting food, to be thrown away! I noticed 3 people in the place, hardly anyone was in there. I really don't think this place will last here locally, being way over priced, for just awfully constructed vegetarian dishes that lack hardly any veggies, sauce, and what felt like 3 pounds of noodles all stuck together, and tasteless food!! Delicious! No surprise, as it's owned by Chef Kirk (13 Gypsies). Foo Dog has awesome curries, some rice dishes, small plates, and all kinds of sodas. It's casual and seems to focus on the take-out crowd. There are a few tables inside, but it's definitely not for large groups. Unless your group wants to order their curry and head to one of the parks to hang out! So far I've tried the Buddha's Korma, the House Curry Noodles, and the Pork Vindaloo. Each one had the perfect amount of heat. There's also a condiment bar where you can add extra heat in the form of garlic chili paste, kimchi paste, sriracha, tamarind, and probably some other things that I didn't take note of. The prices are spot on, and I was very happy to spend the money on such a delicious lunch! The decor is beautiful and looks very thoughtfully planned out with lots of masks and things you'd find in temples from all over Asia. Pretty cool! I fully expect to try everything on the menu! I stopped in closer to closing time and the person who helped me at the counter was very kind and answered all the questions I had. I ordered the chickpea and spinach Marsala with tofu. That's my go to Indian dish, but I'm sure I will be back to try the rest of the menu. The portion was very generous and packaged well in a sturdy paper box, which was nice. You will have leftovers for a few days. The chefs in the kitchen are pros at making curry. The rice was cooked perfectly and the spices were portioned well, not too overpowering. They also have vegetarian/vegan options as well as traditional meat options. There was plenty of seating inside and outside spaced apart. The inside had a very cute and welcoming atmosphere. I was really sad to see Tres Leches go out of business, but Foo Dog has filled the void really well. My boss had been telling me about this place, so definitely wanted to check it out. The set up is a lot more open than what it used to be, and not having wait service I think allows for the space to be better utilized. Prices a pretty reasonable for curry. Since this was my first time I thought I should go for the basics. I started out with the Bahn Mi spring Rolls, which were yummy and fresh. There are sauces available for guests to help themselves too. They have a house made Kimchi and a Chile sauce. I was a bit disappointed that the Kimchi was not like a traditional Kimchi. I enjoyed the spice and flavor which it wasn't too spicy that it was unbearable. For the main dish I ordered their House Special Curry which has shredded chicken. It had great flavor, and it tastes exactly how a curry should taste. Served on Jasmine rice. The rice was a bit clumpy as if it had been sitting in a rice cooker for a while. I love curry & have looked forward to Foo Dog opening their doors. The owner also owns 13 Gypsies (in the same block), so you know flavors are going to be on point. For my first visit, I started with ginger-basil wings. Fried to a golden brown with a hint of ginger and basil - nice opener! For the main course, I ordered The Buddha's Korma. I opted for the vegetarian version, loaded with potatoes, carrots and zucchini. The curry was delicious and the veggies were cooked perfectly - al dente. Thoroughly enjoyed my meal and the interesting assortment of international sodas they had to accompany. The restaurant is geared more for carry out to serve the local community, but they do have tables - mostly 2 tops, so be careful going with a large group.
