Went there for the first time last week hoping for a nice quiet relaxing dinner. Decor was ok, pretty plain for a Chinese restaurant. Ordered food and it came quickly and very hot. Spring rolls were tasteless and we had to ask several times for sauce. Food was ok, not good but not terrible. It was eatable but not impressive at all. Based on decor, staffing, food quality and portions this place running on a shoe string. Hope that things improve and are able to make it. Might give it another try but not anytime soon. read more

I was pleasantly wowed by my carry-out meal from Food Zone. My Bean Curd Home Style, usually a safe albeit pedestrian combination of tofu, veggies, and brown sauce, was one of the best I've ever had. It had an intense black bean sauce with a kick. The tofu was fried perfectly, neither tough nor flimsy, cut into manageable triangles. I also liked my vegetable spring roll, crispy outside and warming inside. This is definitely worth a try if you are in the area. read more

The veggie eggrolls are freshly made crispy with succulent insides. And we enjoy their luncheon specials after we go to the gym. My husband scooped up dinner from here a few weeks ago. His friend lives in the area and recommended it so we had high hopes. It didn't quite live up to them but it was a satisfying dinner nonetheless. I ordered the mongolian beef and crab rangoon since folks seemed to speak well of the latter. The beef was a little too saucy for my taste, and while the beef was tender it was almost a little too soft. But the taste was enjoyable. The crab rangoon was great and the egg drop soup got the job done too. If we were to order here again I'd probably try something else but I'd definitely give them another shot to find my go-to dish. read more

I have just left Food Zone, 5 min drive home, opened the Sweet and Sour Chicken - at least that's what I *thot* I had ordered - and found it unacceptable! The chicken chunks are barely warm, dry, thickly coated and (I believe) briefly deep fried! There are no onions or sesame seeds to be seen! There are a *few* pieces of (barely) el dente carrot pieces, w/a few scattered pineapple chunks! Period. This place has a long list of complaints over the years, and somehow they remain in biz! We ordered takeout from here. I was excited to try some new Chinese restaurants. The food came quickly and was hot. The chicken fried rice and the general Tso's chicken were average. The Mongolian beef was too soft but the taste was okay. The crab rangoon was my favorite dish; very crispy and tasty. FAV CHINESE RESTURANT... My favorites are the egg drop soup, fried rice, spicy tso chicken, sweet and sour chicken, crab ragoon, they have many items that I haven't tried yet but I'm sure they would be delicious too! If I could change one thing it would be that they update their online menu with better descriptions of items on the menu, that being ingredients, and maybe even a picture would be nice. My 91 year father and I ordered take-out. When we went to pick it up the woman behind the counter charged us $60 when it should have been $30. She told us the prices had changed from the info on Yelp. Someone had posted them and not the restaurant and they would not honor the previous pricing. She then pretended to act like she couldn't speak English at this point. Who pays $60 for Chinese food when it was for 2 people? And, it really wasn't that good. I think we have a new fav chinese place. This was a first visit and though the gal waiting on us was short and a little rude when asking questions, the food was ok. I think she expected us to know the menu and know what we wanted right away and got a little put out that we weren't ready when she was. Wonton soup was light, with good dumplings. They have chips! Which is a plus in my book. I ordered the SzeWei Shrimp, medium spicy. It was alright. I think the shrimp were deveined too! Huge shrimp as well. You don't find that in many chinese places. This is our go to place! Clean inside. Favs: Love the crab wontons!! Our other favs are beef and broccoli, bbq shrimp, and sweet an sour chicken. My husband likes the lemon chicken. Ok: The pineapple chicken was ok. Cashew chicken is ok. Chicken fried rice is ok. Spring rolls. Veggie spring rolls. A chinese restaurant with a boring name like "Food Zone". Went there for lunch today (I love my "aroundme" app on my iPhone :). Worked 2.4 miles from this place for 5 months and never seen it, buried in a typical little strip mall. I was sorely tempted to give then 5 stars. The decor is clean but boring, the staff friendly and efficient and the lunch menu is an absolute bargain. I had the Orange Flvor Chicken, spiced medium hot as I requested, hot sour soup (could have had wonton soup or egg drop soup) and a spring roll (could have has crab rangoon). The orange chicken was definitely better than average, seemed like all white meat and plenty of it - in fact the plate was heaped. I couldn't eat it all and so took home a box. And all for $6.20. GREAT DEAL. I will be a regular (if this good next time will reconsider my 5th star for lunch! read more

Another great serving of Chinese dishes at the Food Zone. Usually am here for takeout, but this tome enjoyed dining in. It wasn't too busy as it was abiyt 8pm. Service was.prompt, very friendly. For the group, ordered two favorites: swett and sour chicken and beef with broccoli. Requested no M.S.G. in those. No problem. They will put MSG in is you don't tell them otherwise. Just ordered $20.+ of takeout for 6 pm dinner. It was truly not edible. The almond chicken was awful and never prepared that way before anywhere. The chicken was tough and not fresh, like it was under lights for hours. The chicken chow mien was just as bad. The egg rolls were soggy. The soup was the only thing edible of the entire order. Our dog wouldn't even eat any of it. The garbage disposal was fed an expensive meal. NEVER AGAIN. read more

Be still my heart! GREAT Chinese take-out in Dexter! Hubby came home and announced he wanted Chinese. I suggested Food Zone because every time we visit the Dexter Pharmacy I see people coming out of the Food Zone with bags of food. Hubby agreed to run into Dexter and get the food. He did well in ordering. For us? Hot and sour soup which was divine with just the right amount of mushroom, bamboo shoots and red pepper flake. For me? Crab Ragoon which was OK, a little too much garlic for me, and Moo Shoo Pork which knocked my socks off. I kept eating because it was SO good. Hubby had Wontons and Deluxe Lo Mein which he said "it was good honey" (the extent he wanted to share with me, sorry). In my opinion this meal was a home run. Double kudos for being so close to home! The best Chinese food option in the area. The food is cooked fresh and not the "express" type Chinese food most restaurants have converted to. Dinner portions are large, and one order is usually enough for two people. The Orange Beef is our go to, but all the entree's we've tried have been delicious. I agree with a previous reviewer, the fish tank is outdated and probably should go, but that is the only complaint about this place. I have yet to find a Chinese restaurant that has as good of crab rangoon as they do. I love the about of options they have on the menu. It feels good to support a family business. I also love that their sweet and sour sauce is thick and red compared to other Chinese restaurants I've been to where it looks like salad dressing. I crave food zone all the time. This place is just a nightmare. I would have given it 1-star but actually their food isn't horrible. Not amazing either mind you but solid "Magic Wok" or " China One" takeout.... it will do for Wednesday take-out. But we will never,ever go again. Ever. We have been there twice now. Unknown if the apathy is due to them, not caring about your frustrations over them screwing up the order or because they have no idea what you are saying...I want to be clear that this not crazy off menu ordering but instead things like, " extra sauce on the side". Like someone said below, if you stick with pointing at the menu and saying " B1" then you should be well on your way to some mediocre Chinese! We just ordered tonight and they totally screwed us. We paid extra for fried rice and got white rice and I asked for the aforementioned EXTRA sauce well and I ended up with absolutely no sauce at all. No side sauce, no sauce on the actual food so all i had was dry meat and dry vegetables rolling around in a take out container. No getting to good from there. When my husband came home already completely disgusted from the whole ordering experience and to then realize they had completely screwed up the order. So we had paid $22 for one complete order, no fried rice and no almond boneless chicken. Of course I call to complain. I get someone who was heavily accented but could speak English, hubby had dealt with a man who had no clue. The woman in no way apologizes for our messed up meal and instead spends 5 minutes trying to find our ticket. I finally stop her search and explain I want nothing from her or her restaurant as we will never eat there again. I had hoped she would care and at least apologize.... or try or something! They are now 0-2 in regards to meeting our basic restaurant needs. They have provided: bad service, mediocre food and lack of trying or caring to address the problem. I know, I am venting and yelling into the winds of Yelp. But damn I feel the Chelsea/Dexter area should have at least one decent Chinese restaurant....and no, Chinese Tonight is no better. read more

Absolutely the best Chinese in Washtenaw County. Better than any of Ann Arbors many Chinese Restaurants. We have been eating here for many years and never had a bad meal or poor service. They also have excellent take out and an extensive menu. Funny name though, I suggested changing it to "Beni Wonton's" which I saw in Quebec. read more

After I discovered this amazing restaurant a few months ago they've become my favorite Chinese restaurant nearby the food is always great and the service is always excellent. Although I've never really seen it because of the location is kinda out of the way for me if I'm in Dexter I'm usually going to go to Food Zone. The lunch menu which I believe is 12:00-3:30 is a steal for the food and price. I enjoy the smaller quiet kind of restaurant that it is very clean and great decoration. read more

I've been to Food Zone (tee hee, i can't say the name and not giggle) more times than I can count. It's about time I review them. I. Love. Food. Zone. What a horrible name. What consistently good food. It's not a high end Chinese restaurant. It's actually almost of divey, being in a nondescript strip mall. But I've liked everything I've gotten there! And it's worlds above King Shing off Carpenter Road in Pittsfield (good and cheap, take-out only). Fried rice, hot and sour soup (it's hot!), sizzling rice soup is great, moo shu pork (ask for extra pancakes, you'll need 'em), orange chicken, sweet and sour chicken, twice cooked pork...I could go on. Oh and if you ask for spicy, they will make it spicy. None of this "Michigan spicy" crap (hey, I'm from Texas, give me a break). Nice sized place with plenty of tables and good service, some crazy neon paintings, huge fish tank...perfect Chinese place. I usually get take-out, it's quick and the prices are good, but it's not a bad place to sit and dine in either. If you're in Dexter and need a quick, inexpensive lunch or dinner, give Food Zone a shot. I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

My wife is Chinese. I get good Chinese food at home. I have traveled in China and had great Chinese food and VERY affordable prices. If you can't afford to go to China, go to Richmond Hill, Ontario near Toronto. There are 100s of Chinese restaurants there and ALL are as good as being in China. You don't go to Food Zone for real Chinese cooking; you go there for American Chinese, straight off the back of the Sysco truck. That is why so many small Chinese restaurants have similar menus. You would find very few of these recipes in China, ESPECIALLY General Chao's Chicken. We go there often and it gets five stars because they have been consistent, very nice to us, and very reasonably priced. We always eat for about $10 or $12 each and take enough home for another meal. My wife always gets Beef Noodle Soup; which is not part of the American Chinese menu. It's a relatively authentic recipe. We have taken all of her Chinese relatives there for Beef Noodle Soup, and they all like it. I generally get something like Curry Shrimp, or Egg Foo Young, and they are always the same and tasty. Yes, we have an advantage that my wife talks to them in Chinese, but she never tries to negotiate the recipes like she would in China or Taiwan. However, over the years Amy (the owner) has given us Chinese treats that are not on the menu. There is real Chinese food being made in the Kitchen for the staff. Food that 99% of Dexter would turn it's nose up at as being TOO Chinese. read more

I've driven past this restaurant several times and giggled at the name, but I hadn't actually tried it until recently. I ordered their Vegetable Fried Rice and Ma Po Tofu, which is something I had never tried before. It sort of reminded me of beef stew (from what it looked like anyway). It was tofu with carrots and peas in a thick brown sauce that was a little bit spicy, and it was delicious over the rice! They used silken tofu, which I thought was great but Sean prefers a firm tofu. Keep that in mind if you're not a fan of softer tofu. We both liked it and look forward to having it again. Cruising through Dexter on the way to Hell (Michigan) our party of three stopped in for lunch. As others rightly noted, the decor appears dated though clean, as were the bathrooms. A lengthy lunch menu for six bucks and change presented the expected combos. I did ask for something not on the lunch menu: Mongolian Chicken. No problem. The spicy sauce and generous amount left this yelper content. Others ordered Curry Chicken (an Indian curry rather than a Jamaican flavor) and Szechuan Chicken. The many veggies each had their own color and snap so you could tell they went into the wok in stages. Nice. Friendly service, good taste, decent portions, and best of all hot and fresh. Then I tried a lunch special moo goo gai pan, unremarkableand the last egg foo young today the gravy was old and had a rancid taste. I think they should date that stuff. Service is always excellent. Don't get the name,but I'm not eating the sign :) While the food was very good it in no way stacks up to some of the best Chinese food I've ever had, but I'm giving them 4 stars relative to what can be found in Southeast Michigan. They are above average for the area, which was a pleasant surprise. We ordered a few dishes (general tso, fried rice, some garlic beef dish) and shared them.
