My favorite Chinese food in Hawai'i (as a local who has been dining her ever since I was 10). The ginger chicken, beef chow fun, and of course the PEKING DUCK are my favorites!! For the peking duck, they'll cut it in front of you and put them into baos with oyster sauce and a pair of vegetables. Beautiful. Tapioca is also amazing too, it's tapioca beads in coconut milk but it hits every time. Service there is very fast and helpful. They do everything for you essentially. I had Christmas dinner here last night with my hubby and mom. I love the food at this place. You can get a whole lobster for $24.99 with a purchase of another entree. I remember when this restaurant first opened thirty something years ago you could get the lobster for $7.99 with the purchase of another entree. The decor is kind of dingy. I don't come for the ambiance. I come for the food. It's one of my favorite Chinese restaurants on Oahu. I can get a good deal on lobsters and almost everything that I order is good. I can tell that they cook their food on high heat, which gives it wok hei, that great charred taste. We order almost the same dishes every time that we come here. I get the chicken salad, garlic ginger lobster, sweet & sour fish and salted fish & chicken fried rice. I'm not sure what fish other restaurants use for their sweet & sour fish, but they use sea bass here, which I like. The total before tax and tip was $82, which isn't bad. Probably my favorite go-to Chinese spot. They serve Cantonese food, and the service is exactly what you'd expect from a good Asian restaurant: quick, straightforward, and efficient. I love it and come here all the time. We ordered the garlic butter lobster, which was amazing. Super flavorful, great for the price, and the meat was incredibly tender. The honey walnut shrimp is hands down the best we've had on the island and is my boyfriend's absolute favorite dish. The bitter melon beef wasn't for me, but that's only because I personally can't appreciate bitter melon. My mom orders it every time and loves it, and apparently it has tons of health benefits. The pei pa tofu was honestly one of the best things I've ever had. I'm already excited to come back just to eat it again. It's so soft on the inside, slightly crunchy on the outside, and packed with flavor. The black pepper beef sizzling plate is also delicious and something I order regularly. The stir-fried eggplant was so good, I absolutely love it. Prices are very reasonable, around $20-$25 per dish, especially considering how generous the portions are. Another visit to Fook Yuen and another level up. This restaurant hits all the points of a quality, authentic Cantonese restaurant. It's on the second floor. It's loud and lively. There's a lobster tank. A pot of tea and hot water is served. The service is by far the best on Oahu. They know their clientele very well and you don't need to ask for anything. It's like they know exactly when we'll ask for communal chopsticks, extra napkins, teapot refills, hot mustard request, etc. The food is still very good. Well prepared with spot on flavors. The portions are generous. And the bonus is the prices are very affordable! All of us were quite surprised to see the prices are mostly cheaper or the same as other places. We got EIGHT nice sized oysters in tasty green onion and ginger sauce. Oysters tasted clean and fresh and cooked very well. Fried Fish Fillet with vegetables in Sweet Sour Sauce doesn't seem to be on the menu, or I couldn't spot it. The server immediately knew exactly the dish we were describing. Sauce had a nice balance of sweet, sour, and savory, and the fish fillet was fried nicely. Beef Chow Funn was good. Solid wok heat. Not too oily. Nicely seasoned. Tender beef slices. The Assorted Meat and Seafood dish (not in a pot) was very good. A very generous portion of a variety of meat and seafood, vegetables and mushrooms. Lobsters were quite good. Both were decent sized and an excellent deal at $24.99 each. Definitely better than other places! Green onion and ginger style was dry style with the lobster cooked very well and nicely seasoned. Second one was in the Supreme Sauce (don't think it was listed on the menu), but this one was tasty. Overall, Fook Yuen Seafood Restaurant is probably the only true authentic full dining Cantonese restaurant. The quality of food, top-notch service, generous portions, and excellent price sets it apart from other places, especially the two nearest ones in Waikiki and Ala Moana. Haven't been to this place in quite a while, and I have recently noticed that this once-popular eatery seems to be slipping in the quality of its formerly well-regarded dishes. Perhaps there are new chefs, or maybe they're cutting corners on ingredients. The place is located upstairs in a strip mall. It all started out ok, the lady in front was nice. We got the chefs seafood special, black bean chicken, and choy sum. We had reservations at 530pm to beat the crowds and parking is not so bad at this hour . Try come around 600pm and parking is very tight as this complex has a lot of other restaurants here . After we ordered ... the food came out pretty quickly . Their menu is very diverse so it is difficult to not over order as everything sounds good . . One of their specials is the whole lobster for 29.99 as long as you order other dishes so we ordered three. We picked the salt /pepper style and it was delicious! We usually order our favorites and they were all delicious! We had a party of 14 and we had one big table back of the restaurant so we had the whole area to ourselves which was perfect. We had one waiter and he was excellent as we didn't have to keep asking for anything... he didn't forget anything! Very happy with his service as it so hard to find good service nowadays! First lunch after we landed in Honolulu late last night. We are hungry so forgot to take pics! Since they are famous for cheap lobster therefore every table orders them. Years ago before Covid, their lobster was $14 but you also have to order one regular prized dish from the menu. Now it's $24, the critters are all about 1-11/4 lb ones not canners though. The foods were very good and tasty. However the service was very very slow. We ordered soup, 2 seafood entrée, and seafood fried rice. The soup came out first. Then 30 minutes later first entrée of shrimp followed by the second seafood entrée 10 minutes later, then finally the fried rice another 10 minutes. Waiter also delivered our food to the next table to us. The two ladies at the table was nice enough and handed us our entrée. The part that made our experience here worse was there were only two of us and regardless of the bad service, they charged us 19% gratuity on top of our bill. A friend of mine that lives in Honolulu recommended this place for their crab. I was so excited to come. I arrived early waiting for the rest of my party. As I was waiting, I notice the fresh lobster tank in the front of the restaurant had nothing but dead lobster. I thought it was odd. Then a gentlemen came out with another man, they were speaking Chinese and then the one man switched to English. He said the water in the tank up front and in the back of the kitchen was too warm. That was shocking for me to hear. When you want to order something, you need to flag down a waiter. They are servicing customers and rushing around. I saw another guest yell and wave for a waiter. I waved a waiter over. The service is very fast and they are quick to take plates away and refill your water. Appetizer: I ordered springrolls as I waited for my party to arrive. They arrived and they were temperature hot and generous size and very crispy. They tasted okay, but the filling was very thin and there wasn't really any flavor. I tried the dipping sauce but it tasted like ketchup diluted with a bit of sugar. Main: I was scared to order seafood after overhearing about the tank water was too warm. We ordered the pepper beef and fried rice to eat alongside the beef. The fried rice was decent, but it had raw slices of iceberg lettuce which I caught was odd, but it did provide crunch. The beef was tender, flavorful, and well seasoned. I was staying on the Waikiki beach area and this was an Uber ride to get to this restaurant. I don't think this place is worth the Uber. read more
