salted fish and chicken fried rice

I had Christmas dinner here last night with my hubby and mom. I love the food at this place. You can get a whole lobster for $24.99 with a purchase of another entree. I remember when this restaurant first opened thirty something years ago you could get the lobster for $7.99 with the purchase of another entree. The decor is kind of dingy. I don't come for the ambiance. I come for the food. It's one of my favorite Chinese restaurants on Oahu. I can get a good deal on lobsters and almost everything that I order is good. I can tell that they cook their food on high heat, which gives it wok hei, that great charred taste. We order almost the same dishes every time that we come here. I get the chicken salad, garlic ginger lobster, sweet & sour fish and salted fish & chicken fried rice. I'm not sure what fish other restaurants use for their sweet & sour fish, but they use sea bass here, which I like. The total before tax and tip was $82, which isn't bad. Of course there was also inflation. The portions were smaller than before. Also, they used to put pickled daikon and carrots in the chicken salad. It was missing in the salad yesterday.

Wow it's been 15 years since I've been here. This place is popular! Super crowded! We had Lobster pepper salt and seafood noodles. Both were delicious and would love to come back to try different dishes!

Probably my favorite go-to Chinese spot. They serve Cantonese food, and the service is exactly what you'd expect from a good Asian restaurant: quick, straightforward, and efficient. I love it and come here all the time. We ordered the garlic butter lobster, which was amazing. Super flavorful, great for the price, and the meat was incredibly tender. The honey walnut shrimp is hands down the best we've had on the island and is my boyfriend's absolute favorite dish. The bitter melon beef wasn't for me, but that's only because I personally can't appreciate bitter melon. My mom orders it every time and loves it, and apparently it has tons of health benefits. The pei pa tofu was honestly one of the best things I've ever had. I'm already excited to come back just to eat it again. It's so soft on the inside, slightly crunchy on the outside, and packed with flavor. The black pepper beef sizzling plate is also delicious and something I order regularly. The stir-fried eggplant was so good, I absolutely love it. Prices are very reasonable, around $20-$25 per dish, especially considering how generous the portions are. The ambiance feels like an authentic Chinese restaurant, and parking is ample in the McCully Shopping Center lot.

Another visit to Fook Yuen and another level up. This restaurant hits all the points of a quality, authentic Cantonese restaurant. It's on the second floor. It's loud and lively. There's a lobster tank. A pot of tea and hot water is served. The service is by far the best on Oahu. They know their clientele very well and you don't need to ask for anything. It's like they know exactly when we'll ask for communal chopsticks, extra napkins, teapot refills, hot mustard request, etc. The food is still very good. Well prepared with spot on flavors. The portions are generous. And the bonus is the prices are very affordable! All of us were quite surprised to see the prices are mostly cheaper or the same as other places. We got EIGHT nice sized oysters in tasty green onion and ginger sauce. Oysters tasted clean and fresh and cooked very well. Fried Fish Fillet with vegetables in Sweet Sour Sauce doesn't seem to be on the menu, or I couldn't spot it. The server immediately knew exactly the dish we were describing. Sauce had a nice balance of sweet, sour, and savory, and the fish fillet was fried nicely. Beef Chow Funn was good. Solid wok heat. Not too oily. Nicely seasoned. Tender beef slices. The Assorted Meat and Seafood dish (not in a pot) was very good. A very generous portion of a variety of meat and seafood, vegetables and mushrooms. Lobsters were quite good. Both were decent sized and an excellent deal at $24.99 each. Definitely better than other places! Green onion and ginger style was dry style with the lobster cooked very well and nicely seasoned. Second one was in the Supreme Sauce (don't think it was listed on the menu), but this one was tasty. Overall, Fook Yuen Seafood Restaurant is probably the only true authentic full dining Cantonese restaurant. The quality of food, top-notch service, generous portions, and excellent price sets it apart from other places, especially the two nearest ones in Waikiki and Ala Moana. I definitely need to come more often.

Haven't been to this place in quite a while, and I have recently noticed that this once-popular eatery seems to be slipping in the quality of its formerly well-regarded dishes. Perhaps there are new chefs, or maybe they're cutting corners on ingredients. For example, the egg white fried rice used to include dried shredded scallions, but now their presence is hardly noticeable. Also, the complimentary dessert (red bean soup) is almost always unavailable well before closing time; other available options, such as almond tofu, or tapioca, weren't as desirable.

Today I got to try the Spicy Eggplant with Shredded Meat on Rice and it was very tasty. Also, the service was very friendly and helpful.

I recommend this Chinese restaurant as a relatively affordable option to enjoy in Hawaii.

The best authentic Chinese restaurant around!!! Family style restaurant with big portions, can't go wrong with that! The ratings are low probably because of customer service but the quantity and quality of the food are definitely 10/10!

Really big, decent Chinese(?) restaurant. Got here around 5 on a week night and it wasn't busy but by 6pm it was packed! I got the cashew chicken, and pineapple fried rice. I'm limited since I'm gluten free but the dishes were pretty good. I'd like a little more flavor or spice, but it wasn't bad - lots of cashews! Big family style portions. Decent prices. Lots of options to choose from. Service is very straight forward.

Fook Yuen is almost always crowded, so I strongly recommend arriving right at opening time. Otherwise, you should expect a long wait and a very hectic dining environment. The restaurant is extremely popular, and the tables fill up fast with large groups. One of the biggest advantages is the value. The prices are affordable, and the portion sizes are very generous. It is a great place for group dining because you can order several dishes to share and still feel like you are getting your money's worth. However, there are a few downsides. First, most of the dishes are overly salty and sweet at the same time. After a few bites, it almost feels like eating straight sugar. The strong seasoning tends to overpower the natural flavors of the food, which may not appeal to everyone. Another drawback is the cleanliness. The restaurant can feel a bit dirty and chaotic, especially when it is busy. The constant crowd seems to make it difficult to keep the dining area spotless, and the overall atmosphere is not the most comfortable if you are sensitive to that. We usually order the same dishes every visit, including the lobster, seafood fried rice, walnut shrimp, and ong choy. The lobster is satisfying, and the seafood fried rice is packed with ingredients. The ong choy is a nice vegetable dish to balance out the heavier items. The clear standout is the walnut shrimp. The shrimp are cooked perfectly with a great texture, and despite the sweeter sauce, it is still the most enjoyable dish on the table. It is the one item I would confidently recommend and the main reason I keep coming back. Overall, Fook Yuen is a solid choice if you are looking for large portions at reasonable prices and do not mind bold flavors. Just plan to go early, be prepared for crowds, and manage your expectations when it comes to cleanliness.

Came here for the first time in a long time. I heard they had new owners twice making the quality of the food go to crappy back to delicious. We gave it a chance and ordered the same thing. We ordered the lobsters, fried rice, shrimp walnut, choy sum, noodles, lemon chicken, crispy chicken, fried tofu, and sweet sour sea bass, and black bean clams. I was worried, but everything tasted just like how I remembered, delicious. The prices have definitely gone up. FYI: They do have a yellow Health Inspection notice on their front door. Staff are decently fast. Lots of tables to dine on. Parking is tight, but there is an outdoor parking and basement parking.

If you're in the mood for some decent Chinese cuisine with authentic flavors, this spot is worth a visit! We were tempted by the local fish, Kumu, which they offered to steam for us. The server informed us it weighed about 1 lb, with a market price of $48/lb. We happily agreed, though we were surprised to find the final bill reflected a weight of 1.98 lbs. That was deceiving. What truly caught our attention were the live lobsters priced at $23.99 each. They were of average size, and we ordered two, preparing them in different styles that showcased the versatility of the dish. To top off our meal, we had a bottle of wine to celebrate a special occasion. Just a heads-up: make reservations if you're planning to visit for dinner as the place fills up quickly! and this was a Wednesday night, also we were a party of four and an automatic 18% tip was added to our bill.

Came to this restaurant on a recommendation from my hairdresser. So many places to choose from in Honolulu and we picked this place. Wish I could go back in time tbh. The place is located upstairs in a strip mall. It all started out ok, the lady in front was nice. We got the chefs seafood special, black bean chicken, and choy sum. The seafood special was horrible and the squid was inedible. Hard and chewy and quite frankly gross. The chicken was mediocre and the choy sum was ok. I had high expectations and was so disappointed. Maybe we just got bad dishes but I expected the chefs special label to have been better than the run of the mill dishes. If you really like flavorful Chinese dishes avoid going to this place.

I was there this past February and no lunch buffet. Ya know, you can just call them on the telephone and ask them. The number is on their Yelp page. Go ahead, call them.

They have limited adult beverages. Corkage fee for BYOB.

    To go possible there?

They do have take out. Food is good here

    Do you take reservations?

Yes they do it over the phone and I would recommend it if you have a large party

Is lobster available in lunch time or is it just for the dinner menu?

Yes, you can order the lobster anytime.

    Is the lunch buffet back?

Is the lunch buffet back? Looking for pigs feet

Can you order lobster for takeout?

Yes, but you also need to order a second dish.

How much is their lunch buffet?

How much is the dinner buffet?

Will there be any lobster tonight?

I think you can get lobster anytime here, as they have two very large tanks filled with live lobsters. I just saw the two tanks loaded with lobsters when I ate there this past week.

The first time I've ordered almost a week ago was the pork hash, garlic green beans, mabo tofu with noodles, rice noodle and dumplings, and a pork belly dish with rice (can't remember the name). My favorite has to be the rice noodle cake with dumplings. It had peanut sauce and even reheating it on the stove made it satisfying to eat as leftovers. Each dish had between 6-8 pork and shrimp dumplings. The portions are generous which is enough for two meals. The pork hash came in 3s with the hot mustard and shoyu. Again these were good as well and not as oily and greasy. The pork belly was stringy and the rice was meh. It tries way too hard to copy Tom Khem which is a Laos dish. My mom had the tofu dish and after a while she did mention that the noodles got mushy and had no flavor. Then again she had to take a blood test so she had to watch her salt intake. I also tried the tofu and it was soft and not overly salty. The second time I ordered which was today, I replaced the rice dish with the char siu noodle soup and it was so good. It was the right portion size and the hot broth that's separate from the contents help soften the noodles. I also ordered coconut pudding and even though I have yet to try it, my mom said it was really good so I'm looking forward to it. On both orders, I've ordered garlic green beans and it was the best tasting garlicky green beans I have ever tried. Overall, this place does serve good food but I'll probably skip the rice dishes and focus more on the noodle dishes and their sides.
