Super cute place for fast casual Canto food! We loved the black pepper shrimp egg over rice, the pepper gave the best flavor and the egg and rice texture blended great. Also I've always wanted to try the HK french toast so jumped at the opportunity - loved the peanut butter that melted inside and crispy fried bread. Service was efficient, it seems like it's a small family run place and they're all working so hard back there! Normally I would not go into Waikiki just for canto comfort food, heck I would not go into Waikiki anyways! If you're a local, you know why. But, we had a reservation at 7 pm for another event and my better half wanted to eat here. Located in the Stix Food Hall, formerly known as the Waikiki Yokocho (also previously run by the same guy, so very unclear why they spent so much to rebrand), it's one of the many Asia styled eateries located in the basement. We got the shrimp and pork wonton soup and seafood vegetable over rice. The soup had medium sized wontons that were packed with shrimp and pork. The noodles were chewy and of decent quantity. The broth was a bit one note, but still quite good. The bok choy was fresh and crisp. You can't go wrong with this one if you're looking for a hot bowl of hearty soup. The seafood vegetable stir fry over rice had a solid amount of scallops, shrimp, and squid, accompanied by mushrooms, bok choy, green onion, and carrots over short grain rice, topped with light Asian style gravy. Perfectly seasoned, rice was not mushy, and the flavors worked well together. We cleaned this plate. Seating is open and you more or less pick where you want to sit after talking to the wait staff. Restaurant is clean and well-lit with comfy booths and chairs. Staff are polite and efficient. STIX Asia is such a cool place. You go down to what feels like the basement level that leads you to a cool line of restaurants, like you've uncovered a secret area. HK Cafe is one of the restaurants on that list. I had wanted to come here for dim sum, but opted for the wonton noodle soup instead. It was a decent portion and I was very satisfied. This is a popular branch with its original location located in Honolulu Chinatown. This location is inside STIX Asia in Waikiki (formerly Waikiki Yokocho). It seems to be one of the busiest restaurant as well. I've had the steamed spare ribs with black bean as well as the pork fried rice just for a good measure for a restaurant that billed itself as a Hong Kong Cafe. Give me "wok hei" fried rice! and see if you're truly Hong Kong style. While the spare ribs with the black bean sauce was pretty bad, the fried rice was good and I could tasted the little "wok hei" albeit not enough. But I could tasted it. I had a mediocre experience at Stix Asia, the food hall on Kalākaua and I vowed to return. I believe HK Cafe opened up since I visited last time in March, 2023. They serve hearty Cantonese food in a casual setting. I had the char siu omelette. HK also has a beef or shrimp version. The char siu was moist & tender, and it was a large portion. I was full even though I didn't eat all the rice. HTC had the beef brisket noodle soup and enjoyed it. She said the beef was tender, and the portion was large. Our meal tonight was just okay; the food tasted different from when I came here in July 2023 and I suspected it's a different chef. I remember the stir fry noodles with bean sprouts and shredded pork was so good back in July and I was looking forward to eating it again, but what I had tonight was almost a completely different dish. First the toppings were cut in such big chunks. They should be thinly sliced and kinda blend into the noodles so each chopstick-ful should have a good proportion of everything. That's clearly not the case. I was eating the noodles separately from the toppings. Second, this dish isn't supposed to look dark. Typically not much soy sauce is involved. The gravy should've been clear and whitish using chicken broth and corn starch as a thickener. Third, the noodles were not fried crispy enough. I was so disappointed how different this tasted tonight compared to what I had just 5 months ago. Fourth, the shredded pork should have a silky texture to it from being marinated a certain way that I myself can't do at home. I feel like I can make this stir fry noodle better myself so what's the point to eat out. The soup noodles looked and tasted almost like the stir fry noodle dish, but it should be different. The broth shouldn't be soy sauce color either and there wasn't enough depth, almost like water with salt. And same problem - all the toppings were cut to big chunks. And they used the same pork like the stir fry noodles. The only saving grace was the chicken wings. They're still amazing! That's the main reason why we came here! It's the first time for us trying the beef fried rice too and that was good too, although I'm not sure why it's soy sauce again. At least that was enjoyable. Seems like all the dishes we ordered were heavily soy-sauce-based and it's not supposed to be like this. Our meal tonight was definitely not the standard of HK food. This might be able to satisfy a non Cantonese person, but it probably wouldn't fly with a person who's familiar with Cantonese especially Hong Kong food. Located at the STIX Asia, we stumbled across HK Cafe. We wanted a quick meal but also wanted to support the Asian restaurants so decided to come eat here. Our server was super friendly and even made sure that I was seated at a spot where the AC may be too strong for me. She was really attentive throughout our meal too and checked in to make sure everything was good. We started off by ordering an iced Hong Kong milk tea, iced lemon tea, stir-fried beef noodles and the satay beef noodle soup. First off, the Hong Kong milk tea was so smooth and delicious. Very authentic to real Hong Kong milk tea without being in Hong Kong. I thought the lemon tea was also good and refreshing. The stir fried beef noodles and the satay beef noodle soup were both good, however I felt like the stir fried beef noodles could use a little more wok-hay. Maybe if they kept it in the wok a little longer, it would've been even more flavorful. The satay beef was interesting, in that I didn't expect them to use beef slices but it was still flavorful and the green bell peppers was a nice touch. This is the second HK Cafe that opened up on Oahu. The first is in Chinatown. This location is in Waikiki in the Stix Waikiki food court. Out of all the wonton meins that I've tried on the island, this one most resembles the ones that they serve in Hong Kong. Everything was on point and I have sharp taste buds for Chinese food. The pork in the wontons were minced and had a piece of shrimp in the middle, so it wasn't one big piece of meat. The broth had depth and a nice flavor. They used the right wonton noodles and it was cooked perfectly. It was served with choy sum. I asked for a side of red vinegar and it was delicious. The gravy that they put on top the noodles softened it somewhat and gave it great flavor. The sides of the noodles stayed crispy. The workers here speak Cantonese. However, the prices seem to be a few dollars lower on Maunakea Street... Located in the basement of Waikiki Shopping Plaza, this second location of HK Cafe can be found when you descend the stairs on Seaside Avenue and go down the hallway of Stix Asia (food court formerly known as Yokocho Alley) on the left. The clean, cozy shop was not crowded at first, but as time went on, the seats were almost all filled. I ordered the Shredded pork with mushrooms and bean sprouts on fried noodles. There didn't seem to be any mushrooms... Haha... And the tasty gravy made the noodles soft in the middle. The edges of the noodle dish were crisp. Service was very cheerful and prompt. This lone gal did everything: taking orders, seating customers, ringing up bills, and serving everyone! She gave us a Kama'āina discount... which is better than the Coupon Book's 10% discount! I think I had an easier time parking in Waikiki (shocking, right?) and the space seemed larger than Chinatown. There was a good amount of shrimp compared to some other spots we've been at. However, even with the satay sauce we felt it was a little light on the flavor. This is a new hidden gem in Waikiki located at STIX Asian Food Hall. You can take the stairs for escalator from street level off Kalakua They have authentic Hong Kong meals that brings me back to my childhood. We started with the House Special chicken wings. It took them awhile to bring out the order but it was worth the wait. Chicken meat was cooked perfectly where the meat is juicy on the inside. We then had the Shrimp Omelette Over Rice which can be cooked in 3 different sauces, and we selected the creamy sauce. There is a generous portion of rice and a soft scrambled eggs with juicy and large portion of shrimp. This is a mild flavored dish so you may ask for hot sauce if you like that heat. The sauce carousel includes red vinegar and soy sauce which would be ideal with some of their other dishes. The Singaporean Fried Noodles was also a healthy portion to share and the noodles were not too greasy and had excellent flavor with some vegetables. We ended with a desert, their Hong Kong Style Thick French Toast. This was the perfect way to end the meal. Two large slices of bread filled with peanut butter and topped with a sweet icing. It was not too sweet and the edges were crispy. SO GOOD! The best part is that the staff is so attentive and they refilled our water often and took away dirty dishes quickly. Very excited to see this place but can't get excited by the Laksa unfortunately. Was it bad, it was like bad pizza, still good but not great. There are better examples of Laksa on island fortunately. Same with the beef fried rice, lacked flavor. The laksa was prob the best one, but had an interesting tanginess to it but was pretty good but not amazing. Located within the Waikiki shopping plaza (lower level, to the left), HK cafe is hidden amongst a myriad of Japanese ramen and sushi restaurants. It's quite expensive for what it is, given I've eaten wonton noodle soup for about a literal quarter of the price in the Bay Area. Still, I understand Waikiki prices, and with us randomly craving Cantonese food in Oahu, this place was a taste of HK in Hawaii. They've got all the traditional HK cafe foods, from lemon tea to buttered French toast to beef noodle soup. Sadly, they were out of cheurng fun and beef chow fun. Ordered the satay beef noodle soup (3): not sure why they added bell peppers (maybe for color?), because they tasted awful in here. The broth was rather bland and flavorless, and was mainly salvaged by their homemade chili oil (ask for it). I personally wouldn't get that again. The Singaporean rice noodle (6) was much more flavorful and I'd recommend that instead. The lemon tea tasted fine, although sweeter than normal. The peanut butter in the French toast was ... interesting. Made the entire thing feel inauthentic and too thick to enjoy. I was pleasantly surprised by my experience here. I've always know about HK cafe since they opened their first location in downtown. It has always been on my list but I never managed to find the time to go, so when the opportunity arose for me to dine here, I happily obliged. HK cafe (Waikiki) is located inside STIX Asia, which is in the underground area of the mall/plaza it's in. There's a wide variety of Asian cuisines, with various restaurants right next to each other, but it's not like a food court, as each restaurant has its own area and seating. HK cafe has a very unique set of decorations. Some may even describe it as almost cyberpunk, with the cool neon signs all over the restaurant. The menu at this location is more limited compared to its original standalone location but it is still expansive regardless. The service didn't stand out to me too much. The waitress was nice and attentive, refilled my water and offered me more napkins when I was out. She also didn't hurry us and patiently waited for us to ask for the bill instead of just giving it to us. To the star of the show, the food: - Green Onion Pork Chop: My partner ordered this. The scallion oil was extremely flavorful. However, the oil had a ginger flavor to it, I'm unsure if it was fully intended as it was not stated in the name on the menu but it didn't agree with my taste buds at that moment. My partner seemed to enjoy it quite a lot, and honestly it wasn't too bad for me either. The ginger flavor just confused me if anything. Seafood Laksa: This is my first time trying laksa, and I was NOT disappointed. I've always wanted to try laksa and unsure if this would be considered the authentic way but it was so delicious. The noodles (we choose thick based off the recommendation of the waitress) was extremely bouncy and had an amazing texture. The broth were creamy and flavorful, it tasted like a soupier version of a thai curry i've had before, it was a super indulgent flavor. The seafood itself didn't stand out to me much, and I wished there was a bit more seafood, no big deal though, the noodles were more than enough for lil ole me. Went to the new location soft opening and so glad for the expanded menu. Genuine HK style Chinese food - taste the wok hei in the beef chow fun which is spot on. I also like the hk style toast and I think this place does the xiao long bao better- no tins and the skin isn't thin enough to burst and lose the soup. Glad they expanded to a bigger place!
