This review is for both the motel and the cafe. The motel was great! Very clean, simple rooms. The towels were fluffy, the neighbor were quiet, and overall it was very cute and quaint. I do wish the bed was comfier but it wasn't bad, per say. I would stay here again. We ate at the cafe our first morning there and I was really excited. Unfortunately it fell short. The cafe was very clean and cute on the inside. However, the prices are a little steep for what you get. 8$ for a basic, nothing fancy breakfast sandwich? Come on. Waitress forgot our drinks and overall she just seemed lost in her role. We ate elsewhere for the rest of the trip which is a huge bummer because the cafe being right there is part of the reason I booked this place. In response to Michelle L. I'd like to say that my wife and I, as well as our two grown children, have also been coming to the Foothills Cafe for decades. A wonderful place with great service and personnel. And the food is hard to beat! It doesn't take a psychologist (which I am) to be fully aware of your judgmental nature and your sense of entitlement. Unfortunately, we've all met people like you many times in our lives. BEWARE: CAN ONLY SEAT PARTIES OF 4 OR LESS! Rude and unaccommodating! Would not seat our family of 5 together.

We have been happily dining at this restaurant for over 30 years. If I could leave less than one star I would. Sadly this was an awful experience and we will not be back. A restaurant that used to have delicious food and great service that we looked forward to changed completely. We immediately noticed new decor updated and clean and looked very nice. However, upon arrival we were barely greeted and told our family could not sit together. We have 4 small children under the age of 8 and they have always accommodated us (and all larger parties that came to dine) but we're now told sitting together was a fire hazard and would have to sit at different tables. The server didn't offer us drinks or waters even after having been sitting there for awhile. Instead took the order of the only other table in the restaurant and disappeared to the kitchen. Another staff member stood in the kitchen doorway waiting to receive that order and when we inquired if someone would be back to assist us stated "she wasn't the food server & couldn't help". We ended up leaving without receiving any service after being there over 10 min. I don't know if owners or just staff have changed, but what was once a highly anticipated family tradition each year has come to an end. There are now several other offerings for breakfast in the area and we will be giving those our patronage instead. Edited: the server told it was against fire code to put tables together...after speaking to local fire marshal we were informed this is not the case unless tables block the exit door. read more

We were visiting for a few days, and always drove to the Foothills Cafe for breakfast. We had the Big foot and Little foot breakfasts (big portions), biscuits and gravy, and French toast. It was all so good! My husband raved about the gravy (he asked for a side for the Big foot and then with his B&G's), and the French Toast was made with cinnamon swirl bread. And our waitress was on top of it! Plus she had a great sense of humor! I hope we get to go back again, thanks for the hospitality! read more

Pretty limited menu, but I was excited for the cherry pancakes. Sadly they were most underwhelming, and the lack of espresso coffee to wash them down only made matters worse. I definitely wouldn't recommend this restaurant, unless you are starving and can't wait 10 more mins to drive into Glen-Arbor or Leeland. Lastly, the waitress was a total grump - but on the bright side, the chefs were fast to get our new out (even if it wasn't that tasty). read more

The prices have increased dramatically and the 'self serve' coffee for $3.50 seems very expensive. I've never known a sit down restaurant that had the expectation its patrons refill their own coffee. Servings were tasty but portions were small for the price. We used to eat here regularly when at our summer-fall cottages but will probably find a better value for the dollar. Nearly $50 for 2-person basic, small breakfast but even hash browns were $5.50! read more

The waiter at the cafe was unnecessarily rude. Also the cafe says they "graciously do not accept credit or debit" so be sure to use cash because the restaurant owners like to make it inconvenient for you to pay for your meal. read more

Sadly we had to find an atm because we saw a sign saying they're cash only and there's no credit or debit card. The closest one is the IGA in town, about 15m away.. It wasn't too busy for a Saturday morning & we sat ourselves at a table, then a waitress was prompt & attentive. The food came out at a reasonable time & were not pre-made1 The pancakes were great. They were tasteless on their own & you really need to use the maple syrup & butter, which made it amazing. It was fluffy. The French toast was tasty & my friends loved their pancakes, French toast & omelette. It's pretty OK & fills us up for a reasonable price (about 40 Inc tips for 4 of us). I didn't feel sick after the 6 pancakes. Half serve were 4 pancakes. But there are other restaurants to try. read more

I've been coming up to Glen Arbor every summer for 12 years and I ALWAYS make sure to go to Foothills at least once for breakfast. You need to get a cinnamon roll. But be forewarned that they are huge and 2-4 people could easily split it. I absolutely LOVE their Southern Omelette. This year I asked to get it as a scramble which was no problem at all. Wowza it tastes amazing. Highly recommend the raisin toast if your meal comes with toast. The staff are always so friendly. I would like to leave a review, just based off my phone experience with the foothills Motel staff. Upon calling, I had to wait as soon as they answered the phone for her to figure out the pricing on weekly rates. (??) you're almost in the full swing season up there and you don't know your rates? After giving my info on stay - a basic Monday arrival with checkout on Thursday AM (3 night stay for those who can't do math) I had to repeat myself FIVE, yes FIVE times to the woman. She either wasn't listening, or wasn't listening. I then asked what type of appliances the rooms offer. Looking for normal hotel room type appliances : small microwave, mini fridge would be cool but not necessary and also AC as a whole would be expected. She said they do not have AC and no appliances in the rooms "there is a restaurant next door". I asked if rooms stay cool during day. She says "well at night they're decent". *eye roll* This place isn't worth the time. Been to the restaurant before. It's ok. Nothing awesome and probably below mediocre to be honest. SO if you plan to come here: Plan on no air conditioning. Decently rude staff No appliances. read more

Love love love this place! Hadn't been here in years, and after learning that Art's in town was not opening until later and also not serving breakfast we decided to come out this way for the first time in forever. We were promptly seated outside right away, drink orders were taken immediately, and food came out in great time and was delicious. My wife was raving about her omelette, my corned beef hash was cooked to perfection, and our daughter enjoyed her French toast with cheesy scrambled eggs which were very fluffy. Overall we were happy to return, wonder why we haven't visited in sometime, and will be back next year. This is an amazing little gem in the woods on a lake. It is small and cozy like grandmas. Pops are served in the can, so it is fresh and not loaded with ice. My pet peeve is when an omelet is made like a quiche flipped in half with a slice of cheese in the middle. The omelets here are huge fluffy and served with all the ingredients inside like a burrito not baked in like a quiche. Their sausage gravy is good enough to drink... Celebrating it's 50th anniversary this year, the Foothills Cafe has always been a favorite destination of mine when I'm at Glen Lake. I remember sneaking away early in the morning with my grandfather to have breakfast here when I was a kid...the food is just as good now as it was then! GREAT breakfasts and very inexpensive as well. 4 large breakfasts, juice & coffee for the group came to only $41.00. I went in with friends today & everyone loved their meals. Fresh coffee and real cream to go with it, cherry pancakes, local sausage and bacon (not some crap from Sysco, clearly), delicious and perfectly crisp hash browns, golden eggs ~ it was all great. Of special note were the Southern omelet which was stuffed with onion, cheese, hash browns and topped with an amazing sausage gravy and the veggie eggs benedict with perfect poached eggs and a delicious hollandaise. Lunch menu includes well prepared standards such as the Patty Melt and French Dip sandwiches. I've never had a bad meal here. Only open from 7-3, but breakfast is served all day if you are lazy and like to sleep late like me. Small, but charming, dining room lined with windows that look out onto bird feeders - we saw a woodpecker, several gold finches and some black capped chickadees while we ate. Friendly service, low prices, great food & locally owned - you can't go wrong here. ****11/14/2007********* Power went down tonight, we headed into town and hit our local watering hole, Art's, that has a generator to get our drink on and ride out the power outage. Whilst there , we were lucky enough to meet the owner - and chef - at the Foothills...being the awful drunk that I am, I told him insistently that his hash browns were the "tits" and tried to get tips on sausage gravy from him, I'm awful I am! He was very nice about it, phew! In any case, this food really is locally sourced!!! So, here's how it goes. The girl and I get to Chicago and meet up with the one and only Yelper we know at the time. She proceeds to show us around when she has the time. We are grateful. Yelper finds out I am a Red Sox fan, which flies in the face of all reason considering I've spent the first twenty-six years of my life in Tennessee. She too, being from the New England style parts of the country, is a Red Sox fan. She happens to know these two cats over in Logan Square who are also Red Sox fans, and oh, by the way, would we maybe like to come to their bar and watch the ALCS. Of course we say yes. The two cats in Logan Square are incredible and, I am certain, will someday be involved in my wedding. But not, you know, in a creepy Mormon kind of way. I don't want to give anyone the wrong, Mitt Romney/Massachusetts sort of impression. So we spend almost every night until the Red Sox are finished beating the Indians and then trouncing the Rockies at this bar with our new friends. During all this, we find out that one of these cats, the female of the pair, is from a family that's done alright for itself. She informs us that her family has a very nice lake house on Glen Lake, which is somewhere in Northern Michigan, or what we Southerners refer to as the Alabama of the North. I'm skeptical, but I like lakes, so when they invite us up to join them, we work our schedule out so that we can go. The girl and I spend the next few days isolated from the city and having what most people who believe in God would probably refer to as a "Come to Jesus" moment. I don't come to Jesus, much to Jesus' chagrin, but I do come to my senses. What a beautiful world I'm living in. Man do I miss Tennessee. So on our last morning in town, these two baseball lovin' cats from Logan Square take us to breakfast at this joint the Foothills. We get a table right away and are set upon by some girls who are almost certainly sisters. I think there were two of them, but there may have been as many as five. Anyway, they were nervous but accomplished servers. I'm thinking maybe the nervousness had something to do with the fact that one of my new friends and I both have a predilection for showing off our tattoos. They don't seem like the folk who see a lot of tattoos. There are painted woodland scenes and handmade crafts on the walls, for chrissakes. Regardless of our (not really that) shocking appearance, they wait on us diligently, and the food they bring us is just short of divine. I went simple, having a breakfast of eggs, pancakes, and sausage and it was damn excellent. Everything was fresh, and I'm told local, and it definitely showed. Despite the divinity of my breakfast, I still didn't come to Jesus. But I will come back to the Foothills. read more

Traveling on my own I did some sightseeing during the day and needed a room for one night only. I tried The Homestead but didn't want to spend $250 just for the night. I checked with the Foothills motel and they had one room left for $98 (tax included). I was heading south on M22 and the turnoff (County Rd 675) was before Glen Arbor. It was almost 9 pm when I got there and Frank greeted me. He showed me the room and since I wanted to use a credit card he asked if I would settle up in the morning when the owner would be in. Friendly, trusting, and casual. Nice. The room is very basic. Not my normal but I could tell it was clean. There was a tv with cable and free WiFi. Next morning I checked out and then had a great breakfast at the adjacent cafe. Staff was friendly and helpful with tips and directions. A good traveling stop. read more

So, I used to have a boyfriend from around here. Being one of the few southeast michiganders who actually doesn't have a cottage up north, I didn't get my first northern michigan experience until I was a college student... Anyway, Glen Lake has to be one of the most beautiful lakes I've ever seen. And the Foothills restaurant really just helped make my up north experience complete. It's in a cute little cottage, with friendly service and good, fresh coffee. But the food truly is the reason this place shines. I can't even describe how much better the food is here than all the other breakfast types I've been to. Fluffy pancakes (not the just add water kind), amazing bacon, perfect eggs, really good sausage gravy, crispy hashbrowns (I've been here quite a few times)... I'm actually starting to get sad I don't have a northern michigan connection now... Anyway, I've never tried anything from the lunch menu, but I'm sure that is good also. I'm really just not one to turn down a really good breakfast, regardless of the time of day. To make it even better, prices are damn reasonable, quite a shocker from someone who spends the majority of their dining experiences in Ann Arbor. So go here if you have the chance :) read more

What a warm spot. A family friend (and Maple City local) brought us here last week. Loved it! Like a local family diner at home. Breakfast is served all day and my picky vegetarian tastes were met with a smile and perfect veggie egg white omelet. Bf and our friend loved their meals as well. The restaurants in Glen Arbor are touristy and kinda crappy. Choose this. They take cash only and most curious, checks! Hah! Love small towns. A friend and I stayed for two nights during the off season. We found it on Yelp and wanted somewhere cheap and close to Sleeping bear. We loved the location but you truly get what you pay for. Very bare bones place. Also we had rowdy neighbors who were loud. Even though we're grown up after 25 years of coming to Glen Arbor, we still like drawing on the placemats with crayons and taking family pictures. Can't wait to come back again! Recommendation: if you toured the breweries or wineries of the area or just went through a few six-packs of local flavors the night before, the southern omelet with a hot heaping helping of sausage gravy and a coffee and water on the side really does the trick to get your morning back on track. read more

Stopped in on this rainy day with our family of six: two adults and four children 6 & under. I was quoted 30 minutes. We knew going in that it was a small restaurant, cash only, but worth it. Dad and kids waited in the car while I waited on the porch with a magazine. So far so good. Forty to forty-five minutes later, we were offered a seat: split between a table for two and a table for four. We politely declined (does anyone want to separate young kids?). At that point, the host sat all the parties after us, even those that just walked in, without saving anything to push together to make a larger table. When I asked about her plan, she got very defensive and basically said I chose my fate when I didn't accept getting split up, and I'd have to wait a long while. Ok, fair. I only wish we had been forewarned. We could have saved plenty of time and hurt feelings. We went back into town for a great breakfast at another cash-only establishment. Bottom line: unkind host staff and not good for kids or parties over four. Lots of signage about paying it forward and over all good vibes didn't translate this visit. Beyond bummed. read more

well to start we were quoted one price for our 2 nights stay and booked it...upon arrival the woman informed us that we would be paying $80+ extra for our stay than we were quoted...the room was extremely outdated, pillows as flat as a pancake...comforters from the 1960's...filthy carpeting... needless to say we wanted to look into our options, she told us she'd give us an hour to decide and when we returned in less than an hour, she already booked our room...we were left 5 hours away from home with no place to stay...the worst experience we've ever had, would not recommend this place to anyone...very rude and very unprofessional!! not a good way to start your getaway!! honestly i'd give them zero stars if i could... read more
