I stick with flats, and Target and Payless have what I need for less than $40. My Chucks cover most other situations. Thus, I never really think about going to shoe stoes like Bakers. Luckily, my friend Lindsey (Bakers social media person and owner of Miss Ohio Vintage) recently threw an exclusive Bakers shoe party, and my friend Jenna and I got to go. Turns out that I've been missing out on a lot of great shoes by limiting myself to only two stores! The party was fabulous, and of course everyone was on their best behavior and dressed to the nines. Lindsey had arranged a local chocolatiere and makeup artist to show off their wares, and there were plenty of door prizes for Bakers merchandise. Employees were quite chatty and helpful, and the shoe models were a nice touch. But this is a review of the store and not the party itself, though the shoes that Bakers carries are the standouts for both. I found a ton of boots with a flat or slight heel in black, grey, camel and brown, and there were a million flats that shimmered, sparkled and showed off. There also were plenty of taller heels and uber-fancy shoes for ladies who really like to stand out (Hello, Jenna!). Prices were a bit more than what I normally pay at Target and Payless, but the shoes and boots felt a little sturdier, too, so the prices fit. Not low-end, not high-end, Bakers is firmly in the middle. I tried on a few boots and ended up walking away with a pair of killer over-the-knee black leather snakeskin boots for $99 (on sale from about $130). Bakers also has great accessories, including purses, tights, hats, jewelry and shoe jewelry (new to me). I won a burgundy clutch and matching headband as door prizes and purchased some violet tights and a set of black and pink bangles (each originally about $12, but later discounted with my boot purchase). Customer service is great too. After the party, I realized that I was accidentally charged for a bracelet that I thought I was going to purchase but didn't (I had a pile of stuff held at the front desk, and it had stayed mixed in, even though I didn't actually take the bracelet home). No problem! I called and explained the problem, brought my receipt and items, and they refunded my card with an apology and a smile. Bakers definitely will be in the mix when I'm ready for new flats this spring.

Rather than go to the repair shop, I'd just buy another pair of shoes. Yes, shameful! Lol. One pair of boots was about seven years old. Took less than a week to receive my repairs and I was floored at how NEW my shoes looked. Not only did the cobbler repair my tips, but he polished my shoes too. OMG! What an unexpected and welcomed surprise! My (almost ten year old) shoes look brand new! Do yourself a favor and save some money- go to London and get your shoes repaired......You're welcome.

The shop is very small but packed with things. I was immediately unimpressed because I wasn't greeted well. I was the only customer there and the two people at the counter said nothing, just looked at me. I'm going to guess they are college students, one male and one female. I walked up to the counter and let them know I wanted to check out Hoka. I really felt like neither of them really wanted to help me and the male moved and took me to the back. I explained that I usually wear New Balance 860's and wanted to check out a cushioned pair of Hoka's, hopefully more of a stability shoe. He asked me my size and went in back. A blonde woman came back out with him and I explained to her my request as well, and she was very helpful, explaining the models they had available and offering a men's version since I have a wide foot. I tried on three models and settled on a men's Gaviota. The whole time they just kind of stood there looking at me. I gave three stars because I did find a shoe but I felt a little unwelcome since everyone was very blah. Usually these local running shops get personal, smile, ask what activities I do, talk about fit, feel the fit on my toes, etc. It was just really weird and I might as well have just spent $150 with my REI membership.

Be prepared to spend money but know what you want, do some research and go in with questions. They'll get you moving. They also have shoe repair and carry high end long lasting shoes.

Worst is that he charges for the repair up front. And his only record is the customer's claim ticket (which just went missing on my end and I can't find it). The guy working the store thought about it for a second then asked us to wait as he went to the back room. He returned with a pair of long black gloves with rhinestones along the arm edge. We tried to compare hand size with the glove but the worker said we could open the package and try it on. We did, it was a tight fit, and we returned it to the worker. Darn! But we appreciated the help and the worker's patience. Kinda strange that there weren't any women employees here but he was very helpful. The store was full of Junior-type clothing that skewed blingy. Lots of fancy occasion dresses. Good service.
