Our first time here and certainly not our last. We set out this evening going to Shake Shack and very happy we decided to come here. Michael guided us with great suggestions. The fries were some of the best we have ever had. They are fried with beef tallow which just puts it over the top in all the best ways. We had the double cheeseburger and it was right on point. Came here today for some burgers. We were craving some smash burgers. We got there and ordered, the guy was a little distracted and we had to repeat our order. No worries. We noticed the people before us coming back because an order was wrong. When we got home we noticed ours was wrong also. Maybe he was a bit distracted. But the food made up for it. It's located in a small strip small, and there are several tables outdoors (though overall, it's a small space). Ordering was easy, and you can also place your order online. I got a double cheeseburger with bacon, and it was a hefty yet satisfying sandwich. The burger was heavily sauced, so if I had to do it all over again I would ask for light sauce or sauce on the side. I don't think I've ever written a 1-star review, but I am sad to say that this 1-star review belongs to For The Win. Went here for the very first time as I've been curious to try it. My boyfriend and I walk in with the impression of our order being taken right away as most places do. But one of the workers told us that we have to order through their QR code because I quote, " it's going to take a while to get the orders out." We were taken aback from not being greeted and at the fact that us ordering in person was very inconvenient to them. At this point now, the QR code wasn't working and we had informed the same guy about it and he relayed the message to his other coworker in the kitchen. What really left an ill taste in my mouth was the other coworker in the kitchen whose face I did not see. But had the audacity to say something along the lines of "I still have to do x, y, and z. I don't understand why they can't just order online." and other things shouldn't have been said in front of customers (cause I heard him loud and clear). Eventually my boyfriend and I figured it out and placed an order online. The person who told us to order through the QR code the first time had suddenly lightened up his mood as we were waiting outside, but we were unfortunately already upset at our initial experience. Don't get me wrong, the burgers were as good as everyone else has said & the fries were alright. But because of the experience we had in terms of their service, we will sadly be not returning. Food is good, but hidden charge made me give "could've been better" score. When taking my order, the gentleman taking it quickly advanced to the payment screen, but not before I noticed a "Kitchen Service Charge". When I asked about it, he said it was added because they recently advertised on Instagram which caused an influx of customers. This put a strain on their kitchen so they added an extra charge because their business was so busy. This extra charge was not clearly posted anywhere that I noticed and it's not until you see your receipt that you realize there is an extra 4% charge added to your bill. So basically, we as customers are punished and have to pay more because we are giving them more business?! Their marketing/promotion draws you in support their business and in return, they charge an extra fee that's hidden. Ridiculous. IMO, integrity is more important than taste and customers shouldn't be punished for growing your sales. If you are need to pay your staff more, be more generous or raise your menu prices, but don't add a "Kitchen Service Charge". It's pretty much a tax on customers to make our food. Isn't that already what you charge for the meal?! I won't be going back until that price is removed. Parking is super tiny, and it is located in this truly hole-in-the-wall spot of this tiny shopping center. However, there is ample parking on the main street if you can snag one close by. Inside, there is extremely limited seating. There are probably like 4 high chairs at a tiny tables connected to the walls. However, the burgers are so yummy!!! In the rain, I decided to try 2 of the highest rated burger joints in LA. First up is For the Win. I went to the Glendale location as it was the closest. This is a small hole in the wall within a small strip mall. The eating area was tiny. The cheeseburger was $8, and it was delicious! For not expecting much at all, it surpassed all my expectations and some. The meat was flavorful, and just the right amount of crispiness. The bread made the difference, as it soaked up all the goodness and flavors of the patty. I would highly recommend this place, and would definitely come back. The staff was nice. The 2nd joint I hit up was Goldburger. This is the 2nd time I've been here this week. I don't think my previous review was fair as I had a hamburger and a pastrami burger. I thought I should be comparing apples to apples, so I ordered the Goldburger. Although it was a double, I still think it was a fair comparison. It was good, but I think For the Win's flavor was better. For the Win's buns also added to my opinion. I still think Goldburger is overrated. Growing up in LA, I've always loved In-N-Out. I have been seeing a lot of hype about FTW since it started at Papilles during the pandemic. It was great to see them able to switch directions during the pandemic from a prix fix menu to to-go. Now they are at multiple locations and about to open at Grand Central. On our way home from SoFi, we decided to try it out. Tried to phone in an order, but you have to order online. GPS lead us to a small strip mall on Brand across from the Lexus dealership. Everything else in the strip mall was closed in the evening, so parking wasn't an issue. The place is small. Inside there's a counter with maybe 6 stools. No public restroom available. There's one table out front that can seat 4. Food is made to order, so despite online saying it'd be ready by 5:30, it was more like 5:40. The menu is pretty basic with hamburger or cheeseburger as single/dbl/triple or a chicken sandwich, then some sides such as fries, Brussels sprouts. Add ons of bacon, jalapeño, lettuce tomato available. We had dbl cheeseburgers without add ons, and an order of loaded fries. There is no description of the loaded fries online when I ordered. Basic burgers come with pickle, grilled onions and fry sauce. Loaded fries had grilled onions, cheese, and fry sauce. The burger: since it is a smash burger, I don't think a single would have been sufficient meat. So glad I got a double- maybe a triple next time? The meat was flavorful, edges crispy. The onions were grilled to perfection and had a great carmelized taste. I wish the lettuce and tomato were included and not add ons. I ate mine on my way home in the car. Good but I don't think I would crave it or make a special trip out to get it. My friend, the burger connoisseur, said he thought it was a bit salty. I tend to like my food on the saltier/flavorful side. But he ate it with the loaded fries, so thought it might have been the fries. He said it was good and rated it as a 6-7/10. read more

Taste: I'm a smash burger freak and I gotta say, this is a quick jump up my best burger in L.A. list. I'm a big fan of potato buns, so if you like that you'll be happy. Brussels sprouts had lots of flavor. It's self order and the service was great. We waited maybe 15 mins for the food to be ready and the workers threw in an extra fry for the "wait". Small hole in a wall in downtown Glendale. Located in a small strip mall next to an Armenian grocery store. Barely any seating but who cares, you'll gobble up the food so fast that it won't matter. The menu is very limited because they focus on what they do and they do it really well. We went there on a Saturday and the line was out the door but the wait wasn't too bad. After reminding her she said the food was almost ready, she admitted that our food was never even started and she would bump our order up to the top. After many other customers who came after us left with their food, we went back in to check on our food. Which, still wasn't ready. After much time had passed our food was finally ready. No apology was offered. We opened up our food to find that the whole order was cold. I mean actually cool to the touch. We had just received the food less than 2-3 Minutes before opening the bag. And it was literally cool to the touch. I never complain. But, after waiting an hour and having them lose my order and lie to me that it was almost ready, I had to try to get my families order hot. The brunette lady at the counter was very rude and refused to check the food I handed her. I just wanted her to feel how cold the food was. I handed her fries and she threw them in the trash without checking them. Then, notified me that FTW cooks their fries in advance and keep them under a heat lamp. Not a great idea, in my opinion. The lady cashier said she needed to find a manager to help resolve the issue. I stepped outside to give them a moment because they seemed lost and didn't know what to do. After a couple minutes I went back inside to hear the grill guy yelling that "this is all her F****ing fault". Her being me. This was "all my fault" because I ordered food? They were cussing and yelling talking about me while I was standing right there inside the business. Such an unprofessional business and a horrible experience just for a 3/10 burger and 1/10 fries. Who knows food may be better when it's hot. But, I'll never know that because I will never subject myself to this treatment again. read more

Roll 2.3-2.7 ounces of ground beef into a ball, put it on a a really hot skillet and then smash as hard and completely as you can. The perfection is in the details. Meat to bun to cheese ratio, composition of ground beef, fat ratio, amount of time on the skillet. Nothing about this place felt interesting or new or particularly memorable.
