    Salted Caramel Apple Cheesecake

Another food place I'm ready to rave about, but you'll have to hear about my own experience first. Seated in a very walkable area, The Black Cow Cafe is exactly what you'd get if you looked up cozy diner in the dictionary. Now, our waiter Caroll was probably of the hardest workers I've ever had the pleasure of being served by, and it's almost comedic that I couldn't leave my drink empty for longer for a few seconds before it was infact, topped up. Bottomless drinks really do exist here. On top of that, caroll suggested strawberry lemonade and passion fruit ice tea in lieu of my normal Arnold Palmer that's my go to on account of being out of lemonade. The resulting concoction I've lovingly dubbed: The Susie Summers. Official ratios still being tweaked but: 40% Strawberry lemonade 60% Passion Fruit Iced Tea Garnish with a lemon wedge and sprig of mint. While I had the Black Cow burger it wasn't of paricular note, it was pleasant BUT I did order it medium well, out of an abundance of caution for a new place. I'm very confident that trying it medium rare will likely improve the beef flavor. Overall a tasty burger regardless. However, the chicken pot pie my partner ordered was plated beautifully and had a wonderful puff pastry atop a very savory and delightfully seasoned filling. I definitely think it was a show stopper. I even asked Caroll to surprise me with a random dessert, and let me tell you, the Salted Caramel Apple Cheesecake is what dreams are made of. Very nicely sweet with a filling to knock your socks off. Oh the joys of new sights and smells. Cheers!

(Dined 04/11/2026 SA @ 9:00am, 03/23/2024 SA @ 1:00pm, and many times before): How now... black cow!? The Black Cow Cafe has been part of my life since my college years, so when I came here now, it was always filled with nostalgia and a slowed pace over a calming meal. Opened in 1994 by a father and son, they embodied the community's "Main Street USA" vibe with a neighborhood diner where everyone knew each other, and you were served a soothing homemade meal during breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Did this cafe leave me with warm memories of the past, or did I cower from time's inevitable changes!? PURCHASE(S) Green Milan 16floz Drink ($7.95): My body needed something "green" and this sounded interesting. I thought it would be one of those health smoothies back in the 80s, but instead a frothy hazy light drink with a light grassy aroma and a middling leafy flavor. I didn't dislike it, but I wouldn't order it again. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=Uo_FrA9ezkxhIn4VnwEVtQ Vegetarian Omelette w/Country Potatoes & Sourdough Toast ($18.95): Made with avocado, cheddar cheese, mushrooms, Ortega chiles, pico de gallo, salsa ranchera, spinach, and topped with sour cream, an omelette was also on my eating bingo card. This smallish portion on the healthier side was packed with fresh goodness and fluffy eggs. The country potatoes were plentiful, nicely seasoned, but lacked the outer crisp I liked. The large sourdough toast with creamy butter and preserves rounded out the meal well. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=vDf51dNgOCoyIaPX_AOvrw Fish & Chips w/Coleslaw & Muffin ($17.95): Made with tempura fried Icelandic cod served with jalapeno tartar sauce, and Hawaiian coleslaw, the three fish pieces were crunchy, hot, and thick but needed more seasoning so the tarter sauce came in handy (no vinegar!). The coleslaw lacked much flavor and moisture, and the muffin was moist and warm. This one could've been better. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=dsLbeFauDvvnvXiA6IZhBA [ONION RINGS/STRAWS/STRINGS ALERT - 4.0 of 5.0 STARS] Substitute Onion Rings ($3.95): I replaced the french fries with these, a good side portion with many rings of different sizes, these were hot, dark golden browned, crunchy, and had a tendency to crumble when bitten into while the onion ring (not sweet Maui) pulled out at times. Although they were somewhat oily, they were good, and dipping sauce wasn't needed. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=hBUiwmcGa-pKcL8pRPQipg German Chocolate Cake Slice ($5.95): Solid, thick, and a rich chocolatey flavor, the coconut maple frosting was outstanding! https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=WracW1NRal1uz_2MeLeqlw Peach Cobbler Pie Slice ($5.95) + Vanilla Ice Cream Scoop ($1.25): A flat-looking thing with a ton of fresh peaches that bursted with cinnamon and spices, but the crust was lifeless. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=iBVwJ4BeHE_DcX1FHAP7qA SERVICE We were greeted by friendly young hosts, seated immediately, given menus, and shortly afterwards our orders were placed. Everything arrived within ten minutes, and we were checked on periodically. All was good - thank you! PARKING (Varied: FREE this instance): I found a spot in the large public lot directly above the restaurant off of Florencita Dr. Otherwise, there were metered spots along the main drag of Honolulu Ave. and all surrounding side streets- 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A packed layout filled with tables inside and along the front sidewalk, the decor was as if grandmothers united and gave it a country farm house appeal https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=HWq31BkepPCR8uWcUf4Gtw with odds-and-ends and knickknacks. There was a coffee bar and dessert counter https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&start=24&select=xA7i9XBuwKW-6sfh0n-vUQ with more space. A minimal amount of natural lighting came in through the front glass windows and doors while a mix of recessed and track electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. There were no TVs nor could I recall any background music over all of the loud conversations. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. OVERALL It was nice to revisit The Black Cow Cafe, and hoped to return soon. The menu was packed, the food was good, the prices were comparable, and the service was busy but manageable. Plus, I always preferred to support small local mom & pop businesses. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $69.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice... AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Great Service, happy sweet waiters and the food is always so good. The inside is a little loud so we often eat out front and avoid noisy people. Had a nice brunch today. We also got two hot chocolates.

Been to this cafe a couple times. Definitely recommend getting the BLTA wrap if you don't want something too heavy. The Mexican hot chocolate is a must, so delicious! Service is great, it's a pretty popular cafe so you won't really see it empty, definitely a place to try! They have lots of food options as well!

What a cute little breakfast/brunch place here in the heart of Montrose! Not only was the decor super charming and festive starting Thanksgiving weekend, but the food was equally delicious. Upon arriving on a somewhat quiet, Farmer's Market weekend morning just before the lunch rush, we were able to snag ourselves a table with only about a 5-minute wait. Not bad whatsoever. We ordered the Kid's Cheeseburger with fries. It was filling for my child's voracious, post-tryptophan appetite. For me, the Chile Stuffed Skillet was phenomenal -- very rich and cheesy. I particularly enjoyed burning my lips off by the end of the meal when I bit into some Pasilla pepper seeds. Nothing a little Cholula couldn't fix to turn up the burn a few more notches. (Yes, my tongue is a masochist when it comes to heat.) The freshly baked cheddar jalapeño biscuits were the stars of the meal imo - soft, buttery, and just poppin' with cheddary-jalapeño-y goodness. We left the sweet Full Banana Bread French Toast with its crispy corn flake crunch for dessert. A few bites sopped in syrup made it a perfect way to end our sleep Sunday brunch. Will be back soon....

First time here. Excited to try this cafe. I've heard nothing but amazing things.

It was a very long wait.....but you know what?? It was totally worth it. Great food and a fun ambiance. The staff is fantastic. They know how to keep things moving so seamlessly. A wide variety of savory options to choose from.

My husband and I came here for breakfast, and we were impressed! My hubby is a breakfast snob, and he ranked this place as one of the best breakfasts he's ever had! We ordered random skillets (ratatouille and country skillet) and they were not only unique, but tasted amazing. Our waitress, Slava, also went above and beyond with her quick service! We also ordered zucchini bread to go (there's a whole to-go section in the back) to share with family. I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant and am kicking myself for not going there all the years that I lived in Montrose!

Met up with my mother-in-law for lunch here and we were both delighted with our meals. I ordered the carnitas sandwich with coleslaw and fries, and she had the chicken with salad--everything was absolutely delicious. Our waiter was very attentive, which made the experience even better. The ambiance was nice, and the place was busy even around 2 PM, which says a lot. Overall, I'm very happy and satisfied and would highly recommend this spot. The menu offers a great variety of options, and I suggest parking in the back for convenience.

I love spending time in the Montrose area, and it just wouldn't be the same without a stop at Black Cow for breakfast. I've been coming here for well over 10 years, and I can't believe I never left a review sooner. The service is always consistently great, and while the food can vary a bit from visit to visit, their homemade jam (at least it used to be homemade!) has always been unforgettable. There's always a wait--truly always--but it usually moves quickly. I've never seen this place anything but packed. This time, I ordered the corned beef hash and it was delicious. We also tried the skirt steak salad, which was also really good. Everyone at the table was happy with their food. Of course we'll keep coming back--this place is part of the Montrose experience. Must try if you're around! Especially to check out their ceiling fan, I love the decorations!

I had the day off and decided to meet a friend for breakfast. She selected this place for our outing. I got there right as they were opening at 8 am. The staff was so kind seating me while I waited for my friend. I wasn't too hungry and opted for the oatmeal. It was the perfect portion with the addition of the side fruit. The parking on the street is pretty tricky in that location but thankfully that early in the day there aren't too many people out. Overall, it was a great time and I can't wait to come back to try other items.

    All day breakfast?

Unfortunately no. The first time I went I went at dinner time assuming they did and was bummed to hear no. They stop breakfast at 2pm.

Do they still do catering, and, if so, how can I see their catering menu? I have tried to contact the catering email on their website, but I get a mailer daemon response that the email no longer exists.

They aren't doing catering at this time. Just take out and indoor dining with a reduced menu. A new, more complete menu is coming in early June.

    Do they sell gift certificates?

Yes, this yummy place sells gift certificates and the minimum is, $10.00.

    Hi, is outdoor seating available?

    Yes.

Does anyone know if the 3 bean chilli is vegan?

    It is not.

The tables inside and outside are reserved for customers dining in, which made it nice for this visit since we ordered some food to try out. I ordered the McGriddle Sandwich and the Pistachio latte and my friend ordered the Breakfast Chorizo Burrito and the Strawberry Matcha. We agreed the food and drinks were very delicious, but both of us wanted just a little bit bigger cups to enjoy more of our drinks. The line to order went pretty quickly, however, the wait to get the coffee and food took a little longer than expected. After a long, exhausting four-hour dialysis session, my friend Maria picked me up because I had a…read moredoctor's appointment immediately afterward. I was starving and had been craving a tostada salad for years, so we stopped at Foxy's, a place I'd been going to off and on since the 80s. Both Maria and I ordered the chicken tostada salad, and what arrived was incredibly disappointing.!!! The chicken was bland, tasted like frozen chicken with fake grill marks, and there was barely any of it. The salad itself was mostly lettuce and baby spinach. Seriously, who the hell puts baby spinach in a tostada salad? We were so dissatisfied with those salads that we told the waitress to take them back because we didn't want them. The waitress, who was also the cashier, suggested that we order something else instead. Maria ordered a cheeseburger that came with fries. Since she used to come to Foxy's about 20 years ago when her kids were in junior high, and because she knows I like carne asada burritos, she suggested I order the carne asada burrito because she remembered them being huge back then. Well, not anymore. The burrito was much smaller than what she remembered, and after I took literally one tiny bite just to taste it, I immediately noticed bell peppers in it. Wtf? What kind of idiot puts bell peppers in a carne asada burrito? I asked Maria if they used to put bell peppers in them years ago, and she immediately said no. Maria tasted it herself and was disgusted by it too. When I say I barely touched it, I mean it. I literally took one small taste, Maria barely had a bite herself, and there was still approximately seven-eighths of that burrito left sitting on the plate. To top it all off, the burrito also came with stale-ass tortilla chips! Since I couldn't stomach the salad or the burrito, I ended up eating only half of Maria's dry, tasteless, cardboard-like cheeseburger and exactly four fries because by that point I was disgusted with the entire meal. The final bill came to $41.90. I'm on a fixed income. Paying $41.90 for half of a dry cheeseburger, four fries, and food we barely touched because it was so bad is frustrating enough. Being asked whether I wanted to take home a box for a burrito that still had seven-eighths left felt downright insulting. No thank you. I don't take home food that I thought was crap! When I was paying, I told the waitress/cashier, "I wish I could speak to your manager." She told me he was right there, but I explained that I was already going to be late for my doctor's appointment and didn't want to have to reschedule until next week. I spend three days a week at dialysis and use my other days for specialist appointments and medical visits, so my schedule is already difficult enough to manage. I told her I would call the manager when I got home. When I finally spoke with the manager later, he asked me, "Why didn't you tell them you didn't like it? They would have taken it off the bill." That response left me confused because the waitress already knew exactly how dissatisfied we were from the moment the salads went back untouched. She knew we rejected them. She knew we ordered replacement meals because of them. She knew I barely touched the burrito. She knew Maria disliked it too. She knew there was almost an entire burrito left sitting on the plate. If taking it off the bill was an option, why wasn't that offered at the time? Why wasn't there an offer for a discount, partial credit, or some kind of accommodation? At the very least, after watching customers send back meals and barely touch the replacements, comping a dessert to go would have been a nice gesture. This experience was disappointing from beginning to end, especially because I remembered Foxy's so fondly from years ago. Ewww!! Never again!!!!
