A old friend of mine recommended this place. We stopped for dinner after a Dodger game and boy, what a nice surprise! Lovely, old fashioned diner with exposed brick walls, distressed furniture and a mix of old and new American decor. Very comfortable and homey. The best part was the food though. The chef doesn't know it's a diner apparently. I had a lovely chicken piccata that was superb! The only thing I didn't do was lick the plate clean, it was so good. Fare you'd expect from a nice Italian bistro. They have a devil's den full of desserts they make, too. I had a banana cream pie that was ridiculously good, along with an excellent coffee. They have a full coffee bar as well as the dessert bar. Service was terrific and the pricing was moderate for the quality. Love this quaint breakfast spot in the heart of Montrose. The service is laid back yet warm and friendly. The decor is always festive and especially decked out during the holiday season. If you go during the breakfast/brunch rush on the weekends, def take a few deep breaths as there can be a wait. Often, the patio fills up quite quickly. But sometimes it's just the luck of arriving at the perfect moment. As far as the entrees are concerned, I particularly like the Chile Stuffed Skillet when I'm craving a savory breakfast meal. It's made with a pasilla pepper stuffed with bacon, cheddar, and a poached egg. It's baked it in an iron skillet on top of potatoes, and it's topped off with ranchera sauce and sour cream. And let me tell ya, those house-made biscuits are amazing. Warm, crumbly, and melt in your mouth like a good biscuit should. The house-made jams are also a nice treat and feel like having a sample of grandma's (or mom's) kitchen. On of my visits, a friend ordered the Banana Bread French Toast, and it made me wish I had two stomachs so that I could eat that as well. But like a good friend, she noticed that I was eyeing her breakfast like a puppy dog begging from scraps. So she was gracious enough to split some and do a trade with one of my biscuits. The food was really good and the service was really fast. Even though we went on a busy Saturday morning, we got seated within 10 to 15 minutes. Our food came out really fast and our server was helpful in ordering. I got the ratatouille skillet and I really enjoyed. The food came out hot and fresh. Another food place I'm ready to rave about, but you'll have to hear about my own experience first. Seated in a very walkable area, The Black Cow Cafe is exactly what you'd get if you looked up cozy diner in the dictionary. Now, our waiter Caroll was probably of the hardest workers I've ever had the pleasure of being served by, and it's almost comedic that I couldn't leave my drink empty for longer for a few seconds before it was infact, topped up. Bottomless drinks really do exist here. On top of that, caroll suggested strawberry lemonade and passion fruit ice tea in lieu of my normal Arnold Palmer that's my go to on account of being out of lemonade. The resulting concoction I've lovingly dubbed: The Susie Summers. Official ratios still being tweaked but: 40% Strawberry lemonade 60% Passion Fruit Iced Tea Garnish with a lemon wedge and sprig of mint. While I had the Black Cow burger it wasn't of paricular note, it was pleasant BUT I did order it medium well, out of an abundance of caution for a new place. I'm very confident that trying it medium rare will likely improve the beef flavor. Overall a tasty burger regardless. However, the chicken pot pie my partner ordered was plated beautifully and had a wonderful puff pastry atop a very savory and delightfully seasoned filling. I definitely think it was a show stopper. I even asked Caroll to surprise me with a random dessert, and let me tell you, the Salted Caramel Apple Cheesecake is what dreams are made of. Just love their grilled tri tip beef sliced and cooked to perfection. Add french cheese, purple onions and their special sauce on toasted bread, and it is scrumptious!!! I ordered the homestyle eggs breakfast ($16.95) with bacon. It comes with homestyle potatoes, 3 pieces of bacon, 2 pieces of toast and your choice eggs. The potatoes were good but could have used more on this order. The bacon was good... smoky and crispy. The bread was a little on the burnt side and I didnt like that. I should have sent it back but it was pretty hectic in there and I never did. It comes with fruit jam and whipped butter as well. I also ordered a large order of cornflake crusted french toast ($16.95) for the table and that was really good. It comes with slices of bananas and strawberries while topped with powder sugar. The maple syrup they offer is also a good compliment to the order. Also ordered were a breakfast quesadilla ($16.95), corned beef skillet ($19.95), genova ($7.95) and a blueberry scone ($4.50). Those orders were also a hit except we wanted the scone heated up. It needed it. The corned beef skillet was tasty. So was the breakfast quesadilla which comes with bacon & avocado added to the usuals of jack & cheddar cheese, egg and salsa. Service from Catalina was appreciated by our party of 4. The downtown Montrose area is so walkable and there are so many things to see, especially on a Sunday when there is also the farmers market. I came here with a friend at about 10:30am and got seated immediately. This was for 2 so it may be a little wait for more than 2. Our server was super attentive and by the time we ordered and got our food, it was no more than 10 minutes. It may have been longer but it was a quick turnaround. I ordered the mexicali latte with the egg breakfast, which included 3 eggs, bacon or sausage (I got bacon), homestyle potatoes, and wheat toast. It also came with jam on the side. I had the day off and decided to meet a friend for breakfast. She selected this place for our outing. I got there right as they were opening at 8 am. The staff was so kind seating me while I waited for my friend. I wasn't too hungry and opted for the oatmeal. It was the perfect portion with the addition of the side fruit. The parking on the street is pretty tricky in that location but thankfully that early in the day there aren't too many people out. We came for dinner with two little girls. The service was prompt. We ordered drinks and a delicious artichoke appetizer. They brought crayons for the girls and by the time theory colored their pictures, the food was arriving. The place was full of really cute decor, too. I had the most delicious curry with jasmine rice. My whole group loved their meals and there's a big variety to choose from. Mixed experience -- great service, disappointing food I've been to Black Cow three different times hoping my experience would improve, but unfortunately the food has consistently been underwhelming. First, the positive: the service is excellent. Victor in particular is fantastic -- attentive, friendly, and really goes above and beyond. Every server I've interacted with has been great, and that's honestly the main reason I kept giving the restaurant another chance. They also bring out a side of fresh zucchini bread, which is actually pretty good and a nice touch. Unfortunately, the food just hasn't matched the level of the service. One visit I ordered an omelet that came with ketchup already on it, and it was absolutely drenched. It was so overpowering that it made the dish hard to eat. I wish they had left that up to the customer. Another time I ordered the wonton chicken salad, and it was really disappointing. The romaine lettuce looked old and was starting to turn black, and the salad had large romaine bottom stalks mixed in that made it feel like it wasn't prepped carefully. The chicken also had hard, gristly bits, which made the texture pretty unpleasant as I had to keep spitting it out. It's frustrating because the staff is wonderful and the place has potential, but the food quality just hasn't been there for me. If I were rating service alone it would be 5 stars, but based on the food I'd have to give it 1 star. read more

I've been here a few times, but hadn't been back since about seven years ago. Is it me or was the menu a lot bigger back then? Anyway, I've always known this spot to be a cool place for baked goods and some interesting breakfast choices. The menu I got this MLK day morning was pretty basic. A lot of standard and familiar items, with a few eggs Benedict variations. They used to have skillets and a lot of other items, but maybe that's only offered on the weekends? Dunno. Service here is organized and attentive, parking is plentiful in the back of the restaurant (there's an adjacent public parking area), and inside is clean. Tables are a little squeezed together, a problem only if you don't like getting too close to strangers. Ordered the following: - Biscuits and gravy - 6.5/10: came with 3 sausage links and 3 eggs. Biscuits had bits of jalapeño in them, but weren't spicy at all. Gravy was ok, not too salty. Sausages were kind of spongy and didn't have much snap to them. Flavors were OK. - Cinnamon Roll - 6.5/10: I guess you can get it with raisins or apple. Asked for the apple, and got raisins instead. Roll was on the smaller side and smothered in a sugary, syrupy frosting. Just OK. So yeah, everything was just OK. Nothing too special to be honest. For what I got, I thought it was much too pricey. I also ordered the matcha latte which came out not tasting like matcha at all and a tad too sweet. They were kind enough to remake the matcha for me when I asked, but it still didn't taste great for me, which was disappointing. Overall, 1 star for the food, but maybe we just ordered the wrong things because everyone else's food and drinks looked good and there's many positive reviews. We were in the area and looked at Yelp for a cafe or somewhere we could have a coffee and pie or other dessert. i went right to the menu pics and didn't see many showing desserts. I have visited black cow twice in the last year. Both times the food and the service were amazing. It's usually busy but both times we didn't have issues being sat. They have tables inside and outside. Usually it's harder to sit inside during busy times. The first round we came for brunch (I can't remember what the other person got), I got the eggs Benedict which was great no notes. I also got matcha latte, it was okay. I didn't expect an exceptional matcha. The second time we missed brunch by an hour. The three of us got the chicken pesto panini and one person got the apple and bree grilled cheese. We loved our paninis, however, the person that got the grilled cheese felt like it was underwhelming. The service both times were exceptional. The staff know the menu well and readily answer questions. Great food at reasonable prices with great service. We had the Valentine's Day special dinner with the fennel salad, steak and lobster, mashed potatoes, asparagus spears, and desert was passion fruit pana cotta and chocolate ganache. Hats off to Chef Armando and the staff for a delicious dinner!! We have always had a great experience dining at the Black Cow. The atmosphere is a small cafe with very friendly staff.
