Another food place I'm ready to rave about, but you'll have to hear about my own experience first. Seated in a very walkable area, The Black Cow Cafe is exactly what you'd get if you looked up cozy diner in the dictionary. Now, our waiter Caroll was probably of the hardest workers I've ever had the pleasure of being served by, and it's almost comedic that I couldn't leave my drink empty for longer for a few seconds before it was infact, topped up. Bottomless drinks really do exist here. On top of that, caroll suggested strawberry lemonade and passion fruit ice tea in lieu of my normal Arnold Palmer that's my go to on account of being out of lemonade. The resulting concoction I've lovingly dubbed: The Susie Summers. Official ratios still being tweaked but: 40% Strawberry lemonade 60% Passion Fruit Iced Tea Garnish with a lemon wedge and sprig of mint. While I had the Black Cow burger it wasn't of paricular note, it was pleasant BUT I did order it medium well, out of an abundance of caution for a new place. I'm very confident that trying it medium rare will likely improve the beef flavor. Overall a tasty burger regardless. However, the chicken pot pie my partner ordered was plated beautifully and had a wonderful puff pastry atop a very savory and delightfully seasoned filling. I definitely think it was a show stopper. Been to this cafe a couple times. Definitely recommend getting the BLTA wrap if you don't want something too heavy. The Mexican hot chocolate is a must, so delicious! What a cute little breakfast/brunch place here in the heart of Montrose! Not only was the decor super charming and festive starting Thanksgiving weekend, but the food was equally delicious. Upon arriving on a somewhat quiet, Farmer's Market weekend morning just before the lunch rush, we were able to snag ourselves a table with only about a 5-minute wait. Not bad whatsoever. We ordered the Kid's Cheeseburger with fries. It was filling for my child's voracious, post-tryptophan appetite. For me, the Chile Stuffed Skillet was phenomenal -- very rich and cheesy. I particularly enjoyed burning my lips off by the end of the meal when I bit into some Pasilla pepper seeds. Nothing a little Cholula couldn't fix to turn up the burn a few more notches. (Yes, my tongue is a masochist when it comes to heat.) The freshly baked cheddar jalapeño biscuits were the stars of the meal imo - soft, buttery, and just poppin' with cheddary-jalapeño-y goodness. We enjoyed brunch here at Black Cow on a recent Sunday. It was our first time there and we enjoyed our time there. Service was from Catalina was great. I ordered the homestyle eggs breakfast ($16.95) with bacon. It comes with homestyle potatoes, 3 pieces of bacon, 2 pieces of toast and your choice eggs. The potatoes were good but could have used more on this order. The bacon was good... smoky and crispy. The bread was a little on the burnt side and I didnt like that. I should have sent it back but it was pretty hectic in there and I never did. It comes with fruit jam and whipped butter as well. I also ordered a large order of cornflake crusted french toast ($16.95) for the table and that was really good. It comes with slices of bananas and strawberries while topped with powder sugar. The maple syrup they offer is also a good compliment to the order. Also ordered were a breakfast quesadilla ($16.95), corned beef skillet ($19.95), genova ($7.95) and a blueberry scone ($4.50). Those orders were also a hit except we wanted the scone heated up. It needed it. The corned beef skillet was tasty. I came here with a friend at about 10:30am and got seated immediately. This was for 2 so it may be a little wait for more than 2. Our server was super attentive and by the time we ordered and got our food, it was no more than 10 minutes. It may have been longer but it was a quick turnaround. I ordered the mexicali latte with the egg breakfast, which included 3 eggs, bacon or sausage (I got bacon), homestyle potatoes, and wheat toast. It also came with jam on the side. My friend got an omelet and black coffee. The food was great. We got seated outside which was our choice and it was so nice to enjoy the sun. I had the day off and decided to meet a friend for breakfast. She selected this place for our outing. I got there right as they were opening at 8 am. The staff was so kind seating me while I waited for my friend. I wasn't too hungry and opted for the oatmeal. It was the perfect portion with the addition of the side fruit. The parking on the street is pretty tricky in that location but thankfully that early in the day there aren't too many people out. We came for dinner with two little girls. The service was prompt. We ordered drinks and a delicious artichoke appetizer. They brought crayons for the girls and by the time theory colored their pictures, the food was arriving. The place was full of really cute decor, too. I had the most delicious curry with jasmine rice. My whole group loved their meals and there's a big variety to choose from. Mixed experience -- great service, disappointing food I've been to Black Cow three different times hoping my experience would improve, but unfortunately the food has consistently been underwhelming. First, the positive: the service is excellent. Victor in particular is fantastic -- attentive, friendly, and really goes above and beyond. Every server I've interacted with has been great, and that's honestly the main reason I kept giving the restaurant another chance. They also bring out a side of fresh zucchini bread, which is actually pretty good and a nice touch. Unfortunately, the food just hasn't matched the level of the service. One visit I ordered an omelet that came with ketchup already on it, and it was absolutely drenched. It was so overpowering that it made the dish hard to eat. I wish they had left that up to the customer. Another time I ordered the wonton chicken salad, and it was really disappointing. The romaine lettuce looked old and was starting to turn black, and the salad had large romaine bottom stalks mixed in that made it feel like it wasn't prepped carefully. The chicken also had hard, gristly bits, which made the texture pretty unpleasant as I had to keep spitting it out. It's frustrating because the staff is wonderful and the place has potential, but the food quality just hasn't been there for me. If I were rating service alone it would be 5 stars, but based on the food I'd have to give it 1 star. read more

I have visited black cow twice in the last year. Both times the food and the service were amazing. It's usually busy but both times we didn't have issues being sat. They have tables inside and outside. Usually it's harder to sit inside during busy times. The first round we came for brunch (I can't remember what the other person got), I got the eggs Benedict which was great no notes. I also got matcha latte, it was okay. I didn't expect an exceptional matcha. The second time we missed brunch by an hour. The three of us got the chicken pesto panini and one person got the apple and bree grilled cheese. We loved our paninis, however, the person that got the grilled cheese felt like it was underwhelming. The service both times were exceptional. The staff know the menu well and readily answer questions. My friend ordered runny eggs, potatoes, sourdough bread with butter, and she said everything including the eggs tasted sweet for some reason. It also caused her to feel queasy afterwards. My wife and I have been frequenting the Black Cow since 1997 and know along with our adult kids! The food, is always incredible and delicious. All of their staff are super friendly and courteous, and work extremely hard! The best thing about coming to the Black Cow for us is VICTOR! He is and always has been amazing! We were in the area and looked at Yelp for a cafe or somewhere we could have a coffee and pie or other dessert. i went right to the menu pics and didn't see many showing desserts. If I had not looked at the menu pics I would have seen that have a pretty well stocked pastry display with pies, cakes and so much more. We ended up getting a couple of coffees and bread pudding. We also took a zucchini bread home. We had plans to try the zucchini bread there but after eating the bread pudding, we decided to take it home and have it later. I will say that we saw so many great dishes being served while we had our coffee, we decided that we definitely have to come back. The question is what we will have. The Montrose-Cristo or the pot pie, which I didn't see on the menu but looked amazing. I loooooved my eggs Benedict and also their desserts. The vibe is cozy, laid back, casual, warm and joyful. The manager was beyond nice and friendly and our waitress was very good. The location in downtown Montrose is convenient, as it is located on a highly walkable main street. I consider this place to be most suitable for catching up with your group of friends or for a family outing. I loved catching up my girlfriends there.
