I give 4 stars because they allowed a family of 20+ with lots of very little kids to join an already large tour so it made it very loud and hard to hear with all the crying. Had an amazing adventure into the Forbidden Caverns. This is a fascinating excursion for all ages. The tour was just under an hour, with lots of beautiful things to see about 200 feet underground. The guide was seemingly a bit grumpy, but we did our best to not let it sully the visit. There are few points on the tour that may not be good if you're claustrophobic. If you're going with a family, make sure you have well behaved children, it is a very strict do not touch policy, as the oils on your hands will damage the growth of the stalagmites and stalagmites. While doing the tourist thing, we stumbled across ads for Forbidden Caverns. It was really an interesting diversion. The guides are local and well trained to field questions and address situations that pop up on the tours. The photos are great, but don't touch the beauty of seeing the underground grottoes in person. The temperature difference between the sweltering summer day above ground and the cool chill of underground was remarkable. Definitely worth a visit. read more

Wonderful journey through this cavern! I would hope anyone wanting to explore the beauty within a cavern would venture here. I've been to others and have enjoyed them as well BUT THIS ONE does not have a path to return up above that can be hard for some... it's quite a nice trip with out over exhausting yourself with too much of an upward path. The Stalagmites and stalactites are amazing and the most I've ever seen in a cavern ... The price is beyond reasonable for the beauty elegance and mystery that lays inside this cavern ...in the hundreds of years that it took to create what we are able to see today! And there are still leftover remnants of the moonshine still that was smuggled down below in the belly of the cavern! I took too many pictures to show... so you just need to get in your car and go. Definitely a bucket list adventure for those of you who have not been. read more

The caverns are very nice and safe except for the steps which if you aren't careful could be dangerous. Very beautiful area and great for families. We decided to go as a family to see the Forbidden Caverns and it was an enjoyable experience for all of us. We came during the summer when it was 83 degrees outside. The cave remains in the mid 50's year round. Little ones may want to wear pants or a jacket in the event they get cold easily. Tour guides were stationed through the walking tour. You can walk at your own pace and take pictures! The staff provides historic insight to the geologic formation as well at the Moonshine business from 1919-1943! They rebuilt a moonshine station to show what it looked like. Make sure to be careful when you are walking. The clearances vary so please watch your head. You can NOT record videos but you can take as pictures as you'd like. Please make sure to not touch anything other than the rails if need be. Enjoy your time! read more

Can't believe this place was not on the recommended list for rainy day activities... Awesome place for a novice to see caves! It contains some amazing features and sights. Oooooo Forbidden caves!!!! Should I spoil it for you and tell you why they have that name? ... Ok, I'll let you hear it for yourself when you go do the tour, but the reasoning behind it is actually really interesting so if you're into history/nature, you'll really get a kick out of this tour. Considering all that you see/do, I think the tour is definitely worth the money. Our tour guide was great and warned us several times in advance to watch our step, and be vigilant about staying together with the group, and I can't say I blame her for repeating this since being stuck down there by yourself would definitely not be cool. So let me clear the air about previous reviews stating you can't take pics. That's not true, at least it's not true now in 2017. You can take pictures but only when the group has come to a complete stop, and if you think about it, this makes perfect sense. The floors in the caves are slick, plus add to the fact that you've got areas where you have to watch the ceilings too so if you're busy trying to walk/take pics, and you have an accident because you weren't watching your step, whose fault is it? So yeah, you can take pics but you need to completely stop, and let the tour guide know; it's for your own safety. Another tip, the roads leading up to this attraction are gorgeous, be aware of cars stopping and people getting out to take pictures. There's also a trout farm close by where you can go fishing and then they cook your trout, just an FYI in case you want to divide your time doing that too. read more

So disappointed when after calling to confirm the caverns would be opened Friday they were closed. We drove an hour to see the closed sign on the door. There were 3 other cars that pulled in as we did. We spoke to them and they had heard the same message. Open every day but Sundays and Thursdays. Great tour and experience! Fun tourist spot to check out and not too far from Pigeon Forge. The road is a bit tight and windy, we had a camper because we were leaving town so that was a bit challenging. The tour guide was very kind and educational and cavern's a unique experience. I couldn't believe how far down we traveled, the average tour takes about an hour to complete.You will walk the full thing, there are a few low spots and tight areas which the guide points out and the path is clear and easy to navigate. Our pictures turned out great when we were down there! I recommend wearing a sweatshirt/jacket and tennis/closed toe shoes. This tour was a lot of fun. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and kept us well informed of any hazards along the path. On the tour we got a lot of history of not only the cave but reasons why people explored the caves. We also of course learned about the science of how the cave formations came to be, as well as the natural and man made entrances into the cave. The tour is about an hour long over uneven terrain. There are steps and slopes and is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking. The cave is a constant 54° so DRESS WARM! There is a small gift shop on site, but didn't seem to sell anything locally made. The only bathroom on the premises is across the street in the parking lot. Our group of 4 enjoyed the tour. Highly recommended. Ask for the military discount to save a couple of bucks. read more

This was okay. Felt it was safe for all ages and informative. It has lights throughout and guardrails to hold onto. Ceilings were not too low either. A 6 foot person would likely be okay without ducking. No bats here which was good. They close the caves to the public when endangered bats arrive in December. Appreciated that it was guided the entire way. It was my family and one other family. So not too crowded. It was the last tour of the day. You are allowed to take pics but cannot touch anything except rock at the end. Tour was a lil long for me at 55 mins. Also price is expensive at $20 per adult and $10 kids. Cavern is nice with thee underground streams and it's an easy walk. There are way to many people on a tour. If your at end of line there is no possible way you can hear what guide said. And when you actually get to spot they stopped at - they don't stop and wait for you so there is no looking and trying to figure out what guide says. Our guide was Ace. Towards the end of the tour l, the tour guide turned the lights off on us with sleeping infants in our arms and slopes to walk through. That was very rude. Was a waste. They no longer allow pictures to be taken anywhere inside of the cavern. They said it is for insurance reasons. The girl who did our tour was very friendly but I felt like she was reading from a script. Also it was very kid friendly. I felt it would be good for a school field trip. They are willing to take your picture throughout the Cape and even have a portion where people used to bring moonshine in and the equipment is still there. This place is worth seeking out if you've never experienced a "real" cave. The ticket price is maybe a little more than I'd like it to be - but you can find $2 off coupons in many of the travel magazines in the area. Tours aren't timed per say, you buy your ticket and wait for the next tour to step off. I'm not sure how they time it exactly. Tour guides are a bit quirky and have a canned spiel including (bad) jokes. I'm sure each puts their own twist on it. It's fun but a little cheesy, but they do manage to include tons of interesting facts so you will learn something, for sure. The website may lead you to believe this is a very difficult hike, but I wouldn't be too concerned. As long as you are relatively mobile and can descend about two-three flights of stairs in one go (at a very slow pace) you should be fine. The ground is uneven in spots and sometimes damp, but they'll warn you of that. As long as you're paying attention it's no big deal. The other watch out I would give is you cannot touch the rocks in most places so if you do have a little kid who wants to touch everything, maybe wait til they grow out of that phase. They talk a lot about the fines you can receive for damaging the natural formations. Another note, below ground it's a consistent 60 degrees so plan accordingly. I could see that feeling very cold in the heat of the summer. We went in the fall and it was not that different from the ground temp so we were already appropriately dressed. Overall it was a fun way to spend an hour! I do not need to go back anytime soon but I'm glad we went. Final tip - the bathrooms are in the parking lot, so go before you cross the street to the main building! read more

Cool caves. Nice guide. (Amanda). But terrible gift shop clerk. She was short tempered and rude. On the website, it said that we could take a tour at 5:00pm. Our group was from Michigan, (9 hour trip) and we were very excited to go see the caves. The lady at the desk told one early member of our party that the last tour was leaving at 4:30pm (which was in two minutes...). Our person said that we were told that the last tour started at 5:00pm sharp. The clerk said "I don't care what you were told, the last tour is in two minutes." Inside the caverns, we couldn't really hear the tour guide because there were too many people. But when did we hear her, the guide was interesting, and cracking cheesy jokes. Lol. When we were on our way out and tried to buy a few souvenirs at the gift shop. I had forgot my wallet, and was wondering if they accepted Apple Pay. My question was answered with a "Well, we close in 10 minutes." Lady, that wasn't my question! The shopkeeper was clearly in a rush to get done with us. The staff members were already mopping the floor. In addition, as we were walking-out, we heard an announcement from the speaker. "In 5 minutes we are locking the parking lot!" Let me give this business some advice. If you think treating your customers this way is going to earn money, I would like to see what planet you're living on.
