Forbidden Planet is a NY institution and I've been coming here since I was a kid when they were located diagonally across Broadway. In those days, you would find me here every Wednesday after school when the new releases came out and I would spend my hard-earned minimum wages on 6 different Spider-man titles (what do you need that many for?) and just about every Marvel title and a few DC titles. I even met & got George Takei to sign his autobiography here (before he came out of the closet)! Does it get any geekier than that? I don't collect comics anymore, but still stop in occasionally to check out what's current. Lately, I've been collecting comic art & Japanese animé statues and toys, which they have aplenty along with a lot of rare and limited editions. A lot of this stuff is available online, but there's no comparison to seeing it up close & personal. With so many comic book stores come & gone, it's good to see the Planet still in business and in the same ol' neighborhood. read more

Place is slightly over priced which is ok since they are located in Manhattan. The one star is for their horrific services. The store is Over crowded with employees that walk around like zombies without passion. They are not warm, not welcoming, they avoid eye contact and pretend to not hear your call for help.....they avoid customers as if the customers were life sucking leeches ..... when you do get them, they are cold, hurried, careless and condescending......not mentioning lifeless...... My explosive passion to purchase there was quickly distinguished by the nasty attitudes of their employees, we rushed out of the store, now going to eBay ....... Forbidden Planet has just recently moved to a larger space that sits comfortably right between 12th and 13th streets on Broadway and is literally a stones throw away from their previous location on the corner of 13th. Recently while checking out one of the latest superhero films at the nearby movie house I just had to drop in and see what the new place was like. I was on my way to see "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises" and what better way to be excited about such a film than by visiting a comic store. Mind you my time was limited but it was going to be sufficient for observations sake. When you walk into the new space you are greeted with lots of room and a not with a the congested feeling that some Yelpers had griped about in their reviews. To one side was a complete wall of action figures and they always seem to have a wide variety for you collectors. There are also some glass display cases like in the old space and these have the collectible statues and larger sized figures. They are a bit pricey and really for the extreme collector. It's also very important to mention that the air conditioning seemed to be on and working its magic. There were issues with the other space it seemed and I did not enjoy being in there on a squalid day. Several rows of bookcases are lined up towards the rear of the space and in them you will find trade paperbacks, hardcovers and novels galore. This is probably the best place to seek out a volume that you might have missed because it appeared to me that some older tomes were there for the perusal. I noticed many of the DC Comics "Showcase" volumes which are black and white reprints of classic issues. The back far wall is where they have set up the new and most recent comic books. Just at the first glance I realized that there were more shelves for more product and that is fantastic for the vast and varied number of titles that are coming out each and every week. Forbidden Planet gives you more than just your Marvel, DC, Dark Horse and Image and even makes sure to lend some space to the underground scene so if one of the staff speaks highly of a title, be sure to give it a browse. It cannot hurt. There was a roped off downstairs so I am guessing this part of the shop is not yet complete. I did not manage to ask what will be going on down there but perhaps this will be used as a signing and speaking event space. That would be great. PS: I cited this as "moderate" in terms of price but that is subjective to what you might be buying. Obviously an older hard to find book or rare statue will run much more money than a handful of new comic books. read more

Can I just say... NERD HEAVEN!!! I've been a casual comic book fan almost my entire life. As a kid, I collected trading cards, action figures, and of course, comic books. If this place existed when I was younger, I would've definitely spent all my allowance here. As an adult, I thankfully have more willpower. But can't say I wasn't tempted by the CW DC television show toys, or the tons of Funko Pops, or Star Wars everything, or even those really expensive multi hundred dollar statuettes. The staff is super friendly. And if you can't find something/someone, there's a computer by the front that basically is a map of the entire place so you can search for what you need. read more

I just went the other day to look for a comic. Then went thru the back issue bin and found the issue I was looking for. I got it home, upon looking at it, it had a tear in the back. A noticeable tear. I called to see if I could return it. They said no. To look on the recipt That is very dishonest. They packed it, knowing no one would buy it, and passed it on to a faithful customer. so disgusted with these predatory business dealings. Not going back. Once upon a time Forbidden Planet was located about a block away from its current location and took up two floors of a musty store front with creaky wood floors as old Star Wars toys hung on the ceiling. For a while, they moved to another nearby site on a corner facing the nearby Regal Theater. Now they have settled into a new spot in the middle of a block in Union Square. While not as big as their old site in the 80's, they have made the space work. The front of the store has a bunch of books, toys and collectibles in the window that would capture any Geek's eyes. The door handles are Captain America's *shield*! Inside are glass cases with lots of awesome collectibles and toys inside of them. Nearby piles of Funko pops and action figures sit waiting for fans to take them home. The comic books are located more towards the back of the store, and while it is a significant part of the business, it is maybe about half what it used to be. Aside from the Nerd Love Ambiance of the store, the toy collector in me appreciates how Forbidden Planet often gets in harder to find figures weeks before they begin to appear at mass retail. The staff is also very helpful and often helps customers find what they are looking for. In some cases I have overheard conversations where they helped people pick out gifts as well. If you're into pop culture, scifi, comics or fantasy at all, definitely give Forbidden Planet a visit. You'll not only be visiting an awesome shop but an institution as well! read more

There's little to debate that I find myself as a frustrated Sci-fi guy, I missed the whole world of comic books and gravitate to the more outdated Science Fiction books, movies and figurines. No signs of Dr X, Claude Rains, Flash Gordon, heck I saw King Kong without even a glimpse anywhere of Fay Wray? --- What is the deal with THAT? There were Star Wars character figurines, but no transportation vehicles. No All Terrain Attack Transports (ATAT's) no Ewok Battle Wagons but this did not levy a kabosh on my parade. I'm a fan of the vehicles and on occasion they trump my intetest in the characters. If WWF and the other Wrestling federations are proudly displayed, what about gore and the villains that perpetuated the bloodlust? No Fangora? Man I grew up with that magazine and associated films: Creepshow, Dawn of the Dead, Hellraiser, etc.. No gore anywhere. Yet, I was still enjoying the shiny costumes of the more modern crime fighters and intergallitic space heros and heroines and the fleeting thoughts of The Day the Earth Stood Still. read more

A very cool store for lovers of comics and all things nerd/pop-culture related. I've heard about Forbidden Planet for years and even ordered from them online a few times, but have yet to experience their retail store until now. It's a great space full of everything comic book, pop culture and nerd related. There's a good chance if you're looking for that specific action figure or comic book or graphic novel they have it. It's a place where you can easily get listed looking around for hours. The isles are a bit cramped and the staff was a bit pushy/not terribly nice and I understand that's because they have a lot of tourists coming through their doors. I was just looking at some things in display cases a couple times and was given the nosey "can I help you" from their staff in the less helpful ways. No one approached me from greeter to reps, when I approached someone first I was told yes we have other items in the back with a nasty attitude. Then the fake Jesus at check out when I couldn't find anyone else regarding another item simply turn me away by saying "do you see it in the cabinet, then we don't have it". Did not bother to look online or ask anyone else. Came into the store om Monday looking for a certain issue. Was told by staff members that what was sold to me was what I was looking for. It wasn't. After coming back into Manhattan to meet some friends for dinner, I stopped by to try to exchange the issue for what I was originally looking for. I was told that without an original receipt it couldn't be done. While purchasing the issue I was looking for , I once again experienced poor employee service that I've seen many times at this location. Uggghh, why don't we have nerd stores like this in Hawaii! This is hands down the coolest comic/fandom speciality store I've been in to date. Maybe it's the location, the architecture, or the interior colors or the high ceiling, but for sure there's a certain vibe you get from this shop that exudes badassery. Not that there's anything wrong with Mom and Pop style comic stores with wire racks and and 10 by 20 feet of store space but.... Forbidden Planet is just something you HAVE to visit if you're a comic, superhero, sci-fi, pop-nerd-culture lover. Did I mention the staff was super amazing? I came across this store by accident on my way to eat at Ippudo and sometimes, that's the joy of holidays - finding a litle gem by accident I've been to Forbidden Planet in London but this shop had more character. There were lots of comics at the back but I loved browsing all the cool stuff in the front In a way, I was so glad that I was on holiday and couldn't therefore pack any of the very tempting Star Wars characters and memorabilia into my suitcase and not being a woman, I didn't even consider buying another suitcase for 'holiday shopping'! I really liked this place at first. After time though, I had bad experiences with poor customer service, dismissive help, and they have a horrible return policy. I bought a game and decided I didn't want it the next day. I never took it out of it's wrapper. I went to return it and they refused to give my money back and said they would only give me store credit. This wasn't okay with me so I decided once I used my store credit, I'm not coming back here again. There have been people there who have been helpful but I felt that bad customer service overshadowed the good. This location is near the famous Strand bookstore and many other places to dine and shop so this is the main upside. Personally, I will give my business elsewhere, probably JHU because they've always been helpful and kind, but that's just my two cents. read more

Clearly customer service is unable to hone their communication skills befitting in the hospitality service industry. Price range from $21.50 to near $550.00 for a toy replica model figure. Albeit, The Strand is mere walking distance away and costing far less, but Forbidden Planet is a speciality store for their intense selection of fantasy, science fiction books, comic book, cartoon and anime related. It sits directly opposite of Regal Union Square Stadium 14 where movie goers can kill time either before or after to venture into the fantasy anime world of one's hero. read more

They sell all sorts of good comics and it seemed well lit as well as family friendly as I saw other families browsing within. I wonder how much tourist traffic it gets versus regular local customers. I'm feeling very old, because I remember Forbidden Planet's two previous locations. I've been going to Forbidden Planet since the late 1980s. I am glad that it has stayed in the same area (Broadway around 12th Street) and not gone away, because I would feel truly lost if it were gone. Fun place to visit if you love comics, RPG stuff, and other nerd-ware. This store is stuffed and when my kid and I went it was also packed with customers. I was looking for Wonder Woman figurines and they were looking for MTG stuff and we were both happy. Workers there didn't interact with me at all, they were busy. This is a great comic and geek store. They have basically every super hero shirt you can think of from big comic covers like ASM Torment to ASM 300 to the Dark Knight Returns 2 and many more. The condition is not mint perfect but definitely better than midtown comics. Most of midtown's books have spine dents and corner dings and the staff gets mad when you point it out. Anywho, I've made forbidden my new spot and signed up for the pull list for a discount on all my books. I have picked up 3 pull lists now and only once did I ask to swap a book out with one on the shelf. They also have incentive variants for a cheap price too compared to the price gouging goblins at midtown. Oh this place has so many funko pops, vintage action figures, table top accessories, magic and Pokémon cards and many more. Most importantly, the staff is friendly and helpful. One of the associates took 10 minutes to help me sign up for the pull list and didn't rush me or tell me I was holding up a line on comic book day. Strolled into this place on the way to The Strand bookstore! I'm glad that I did. The biggest collection of science fiction related items that I have personally ever seen. I was impressed by the amount of t shirts and graphic novels this place had. As a Stephen King fan, I flipped through a Dark Tower edition for several minutes and was impressed over all with amount of Marvel and DC stuff they had. Speaking of Stephen King, I bought a really sweet Pet Semetary t shirt. The customer service is a little blah but it seems like it could be a tough job in terms of having to deal with people. They had some sailor moon figures I thought were pretty cool...Moon Prism Power!.... They also sell a bunch of those POP figures- so if you're looking for a particular one this is the place. This is a really nice modern comic book store with lots of pop culture swag. If you like current comic books, this is the place. I didn't really see any older back issues for those who seek out rare collectibles like gold, silver, bronze or copper age comic books. They have something for all ages, genders and interests so a very robust selection. As a tourist, it's a bit tricky to find this part of Broadway, and when asking locals, I'm not sure If they gave me wrong directions on purpose or not, but it became difficult to walk to since Broadway changed to another street name and route somewhere along the way. Call 'em here if confused or use your GPS. Being in LA and California where the comic book retail store (LCS: local comic shop) is increasingly becoming scarce due to so many conventions, online retailers and the overhead of carrying inventory and paying rent makes it near impossible for many stores to even exist let alone in this size and scope. I can appreciate the work put forth in having a store such as this around. I say, even if this store is a tad higher in price than what you can find stuff for elsewhere, to support your local merchants otherwise they won't be around for you in the future when you need 'em. read more

Whats with the negative reviews of this place. If you like comics or toys, this is the place to go in lower Manhattan. So maybe they don't have an amzing backstock of old issues, but thats why you go to conventions isn't it. The people are helpful here, they have an excellent selection, and it is a judgment free store for those into this stuff. AND ITS BEEN HERE FOREVER!!! My only complaint is that its tight in the aisles and usually crowded. If you are visiting Manhattan and you like comics, make a stop here. It's no diferent than going to Katz's Deli or Russ'N'Daughters. They just don't make them like this anymore. read more

Probably the largest and most expansive comic book store in the city. You'll find everything from comic books, graphic novels, and a wide selection of back issues. Expansive space which you never feel cramped. Great service and the folks there are happy enough to talk about comics and memorabilia with you all day which is always fun to debate Batman vs. Superman. Wonderful large inventory of collectibles as well that you'll find that ranges from asia to the states. Can definitely spend a whole day in here. read more

My wife and I were in Manhattan on a long weekend trip and we walked by this store called Forbidden Planet. Umm...I know I have heard of this place, and I remembered back to some Tell 'Em Steve Dave Podcasts about this cool place in the city. We were walking back towards our hotel and my wife and I didn't have much time to check it out, but what I saw was amazing. Tons of figurines! Lots of comics! New comics displayed across the back wall. It made me wish I collected comics again, but I don't mind saving the $50 a week now a days that I don't.
