Of…read moreall the times I have been there, I have only had one encounter where a salesperson was helpful and kind. Most of my interactions with the staff have been characterized by haughty attitudes and rudeness on their behalf. I have never asked for much beyond whether I could use the dressing room and still have been treated with disregard and most recently, with disrespect. On my last visit, I was being let into the dressing area and was asked if I was a cardholder. I told the salesperson I was. She told me I could get a 40% discount with my card. When I exited the dressing room to purchase my items I was asked again if I was a card holder by the same salesperson. I said I was. She then asked me if I was a recent and current cardholder. I told her I was. She furrowed her brow and asked if I was sure, and if she should "look me up." I told her I was and asked why she had asked me so many times. She walked away and disappeared into the dressing room area. I pulled my card out and headed to the counter to pay for my purchase. Another employee rang up my total and told me that the cardholder discount did not apply when I asked about the discount. I asked for an explanation and did not get one. The salesperson placed my items in the bag and, though I had my hand outstretched to take it from her, decided to toss it toward me on the counter. She did not look me in the eye during our entire interaction and walked off without a thanks or salutation. As I said earlier, I have never had many interactions with the staff when I am there and have never been rude or unkind. I have always had to ask for help instead of the staff asking to help me. I am a local professional, but I am also an Indigenous person and feel as if my appearance may have played a part my interactions with them. I honestly cannot think of any other reason as I have seen different treatment afforded for other customers when I have been there. Needless to say, I will not be back and am sure to spread the word. I do not think their attitudes or actions reflect the best sales practices or the reality of their brand, at all. They have elitist attitudes and are merely a lower, mid-level, retail chain. A smile and some kindness toward those of us who appear to be "other" could only help.

But anyone who goes to the Longmeadow Shops knows, it turns into a whole day event being at this place. Every store had a friends and family event sale going on. I was in need of some new fall attire, specifically a corduroy skirt. To save time, I did a quick search on my phone. Of course, it provided me with the gap located in the Longmeadow Shops after being there for almost 3+ hours shopping and dining. As soon as I walked through the door, I was greeted by welcoming employee. I asked her where the particular item I was looking for was. She directed me to skirt section. Immediately looking at the section, they did not have the particular item I wanted. I went up to the front desk to see if they were able to order the item to ship to my house. The manager and employee looked up the item via the sku # from my phone on their pods. But they were unsuccessful in locating the item within the entire gap stock. We all found this odd since we were physically looking at the item on my phone. They then called corporate, turns out it is a Gap Factory Store item. I honestly had no clue between the difference of the stores, especially considering they had a J.Crew Factory Store in the Longmeadow Shops directory. Nevertheless, both of them understood where I was coming from and was extremely nice about the whole situation. All in all, they did locate and order the skirt I wanted through Gap Factory. I would like to add they were the only two employees I saw working on 11/2/2019 around 7:00 p.m. handling the entire store. Both of them simultaneously were managing the store (ringing other patrons out, answering questions, etc.) and dealing with the representative on the phone for over twenty minutes. Additionally, they honored the deal that was going on in-store at that time (40 to 70%+ an extra 20% off)! I was only going to order one skirt, but with the deal, I decided on purchasing two for the price of one. I highly recommend anyone to go to this store. It was my mistake that I did not know this was a factory store. But, instead of the employee/manager turning me away, they made sure I was able to purchase my intended items with a discount. I did not catch both of their names at the end, but they are complete rockstars at this store. I highly recommend anyone who reads this review to go, too. The economy of downtown Northampton has seen better days. But maybe I don't read as a potential customer, because I have yet to be offered a warm welcome. Or any welcome at all. Like a daughter-in-law trying and failing to win the approval of a withholding matriarch, I have tried and tried over the years with this Eileen Fisher store to be treated like a potential customer. Weekday or weekend, early or late, when I walk in the door I'm simply invisible. I'm not greeted, no one asks if I need help or if I would like to try something on, and no one says goodbye when I say "thank you" and leave. On a recent visit, I walked into the store and made an embarrassingly conscious effort to browse slowly, starting at the front instead of heading first toward the sales at the back, which is my normal habit. I cocked my head thoughtfully. I tried looking at the tags, then I tried NOT looking at the tags. *crickets* I looked over at the saleswoman, who was having a laughing conversation with a similiarly-aged women about family and friends. She seemed friendly and nice. This wasn't a Pretty Woman situation. So what's the deal? When I eventually walked out of the store, I actually felt embarrassed and self-conscious, like I had intruded on a private party. Around five years ago, I had a very memorable failed attempt that is worth telling about. On that day, I quickly needed something to wear to an interview. I walked in, and asked for help (after the standard ignoring treatment). I explained what I was looking for, and that I tended to have difficulties with proportion as a woman with a small frame, so I hoped for something that wasn't too long for me and that maybe could give some definition or structure at the waist. She picked a few, and they weren't quite right. This is normally the point at which the associate and the customer would troubleshoot or try again. If I were the saleswoman, I would have maybe offered to order the items in petite, given some guidance about belting or layering, or *something.* Instead, she advised me that Eileen Fisher tends to be designed for a taller woman. Huh? I was roughly the same height and build as the saleswoman. No tips and tricks from lived experience? I thanked her for her help and left empty-handed, with that same unsettling feeling of having intruded and wasted someone's time. Why am I a glutton for humiliation? Why do I keep going back? Well, I actually do just want a nice place to shop for clothes. I would like to have the experience of doing it with the help of a knowledgeable sales associate. I'd also really like to support the downtown businesses rather than buying online. The other day I had made the trip specifically to shop the 40% off sale and to see some pieces that I had been looking at online, and was excited and prepared to buy, but the ice-box treatment let the wind right out of my sails. Why write this review? I'd like the management and staff to read it and take it to heart. I'm not the first person to write about the cold treatment, but I hope I'm the last. Especially after the hit that our business district took from COVID, we all need to work together to rally our downtown economy. A very easy step toward that goal is to be welcoming and make people want to shop in the stores.

Short answer is they sell everything- clothes, food, hardware, housewares, health and beauty aids, toys for the kids- just about everything. These are not the smoke damaged seconds you'll find in Building 19- this is first quality new merchandise. They have a nice feature that saves you even more money -their Internet Coupons. Every week they feature about 20 coupons for deeper savings on all kinds of stuff- you have to go on their website and print them off. Every store has a dedicated section for the Internet Coupon specials. The Southwick location is one of OSJL's nicer locations, ranking in my book second only to Canton, and easily ahead of the adequate Bloomfield, slovenly Windsor, and horrendous Berlin stores. In Southwick, the shelves are well stocked, the store is neat, the signage is easy to read, the variety is stellar, the service is attentive and the prices are of course very good. I get a particular kick out of seeing OSJL staples such as Paul Sorvino pasta, Red Mill grains, and Peanut Butter & Company flavored peanut butter sold in fancy gourmet stores for 3 or 4X their OSJL price. If you like Salsa, try their Brad's salsa- its one of the best I have had for just about $2 or so. I also get their Polar Orange Dry Diet Soda 6-packs for an embarassingly low $1.65.
