Pros: Great coffee & drinks, variety of really unique sandwiches, location Cons: Price and Temperature I was very excited when I heard that the owners of Diesel Cafe (Davis Sq) and Bloc 11 (Union Sq) would be opening a spot in this neighborhood. There isn't much in the way of nice coffee joints for this stretch of area between Union and Porter Squares. And they certainly do deliver on great coffee and drinks and a yummy and different menu. However, the prices are way too high. A sandwich, iced latte and tip cost me $18! And there's only one size for espresso drinks so it wasn't like I bought some giant drink! This is a neighborhood struggling to keep an economic mix in the face of increasing gentrification and it's a way less trendy neighborhood than Davis and Union, so why are the prices higher than the other eateries these owners run? In addition, it is freezing in here. I know it's a large space and it's winter outside, but the indoor temp. app on my phone says it's 58 degrees in here. Everyone sitting here is wearing their coats, hats and gloves. For the prices, I'd expect some more heating. Unfortunately, unless the prices come down a bit, I don't think I'll be back unless it's for a special occasion. read more

I came back and got a Broadway sandwich and was BLOWN AWAY. It was probably the best "margarita-style" sandwich I've ever had. It's always packed because it's just really, really, really good. I've never had anything that wasn't great here, plus it's a really cool place to sit. read more

The environment was quite welcoming. The friendly staff, smooth music, and acceptance of dogs made me feel quite comfortable in the space. The layout splits the ice cream section and the bakery section (heads up, they do have different hours). I had the sorbet of the day, which was berry punch lemonade. It was absolutely delicious. On my bucket list for awhile. I read many reviews and although it is more expensive than most cafes, it is more than worth the price. Why can't the consumer grasp that it is very costly to operate a business, this place is huge and provides a very comfortable place to enjoy free wifi, (I noticed so many people with 1 cup of coffee and using an entire table for a long time. Forge has plenty of staff on to provide great efficiant service and most important uses great products. I would highly recommend. read more

I had the heath breakfast sandwich, it tastes good with a touch of maple butter. I had their sparkling ice-tea, however the drink was lack of carbonate and not sparkling enough for me. This is a pricy place for Somerville. I can imagine they would charge this much if the location is in Harvard sq. Anyway, their flavor of the bake goods seem quite unique. It's worth to give it a try. The setting of the cafe is more like a warehouse style, so it's very different from a regular cafe. Again, it's nice. read more

Update - 7/11/2016 So, I just checked out their Ice Cream shop, yesterday (right next door/attached to the coffee shop/bakery counter.) It was fantastic! If you're really in the mood for coffee, but also want dessert, and don't wanna choose, they've got you covered. The cold brew coffee shake. Cold brewed coffee and vanilla ice cream. Sooooo good. Also went back later on in the day and tried the coffee ice cream and the cookies and cream (a scoop of each). Some of the best ice cream I've ever had. Definitely recommend. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friendly staff, a fair amount of parking, free wifi, weird/interesting local art. It's a good spot! As far as edibles/drinkables. Best English muffins, ever. If that statement sounds ridiculous, you need to get over to Forge and try one. You'll never look at a Thomas' the same, again. Great desserts, excellent coffee. Of course, it's a bit pricey. But as a 2-3 times a month treat, I'm into it. A bit of advice, if you go for the pourover, just go for whichever the cheapest one is. I've tried the 6-7 dollar rarities, and while they are fantastic, they are no better than the others. It costs more due to rarity, not flavor. So if you really wanna pay the two extra bucks, get the 4 dollar pourover, and leave a 2 dollar tip for the friendly people who work there. read more

I got a cheddar jalapeno roll which was the perfect balance of crispy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside and not overly spicy. Decent new coffee shop from the owners of Bloc 11 and Diesel. The space is quite nice, with plenty of seating and a clean industrial look. The windows into the bakery area gives an interesting perspective, although when nothing is being baked, you're left with a view of an empty table and several ceiling-mounted extension cords. The space is nicer than either of their other two businesses, although it doesn't have Bloc 11's outdoor seating. It doesn't smell. Espresso is ok. Comparable quality to Bloc 11 and Diesel, although not the best in the area. Price is where this cafe falls short, as sandwiches, bread, pastries, and coffee drinks other than plain drip coffee or espresso are prohibitively expensive. Sandwiches are $10, which feels like a stretch even though the bread they're on is excellent and house made. Pricing doesn't simply correlate with effort or ingredients -- in the retail section, they're selling a Hario Buono pour over kettle for $95, which is consistently available on Amazon for $40. It does seem like they're out of touch on what things should cost, or simply reaching too high. Despite the convenient location for me, I'm hesitant to go here often. read more

I've been coming to Forge for a few years now and am a big fan of their baked goods. They make some of the best bagels in the area and their breakfast sandwiches are on point (coming from a New Yorker). Their cold brew and hot coffees are also delicious and it's a cool and comfortable space. They are quite pricey, but since everything is made in house and of such high quality, I think it's worth it as a weekend treat. I haven't tried their sandwiches but they look tasty as well! read more

Forge is an exemplar of the sub-par cafe scene in Boston/Camberville. It's very clear from the moment you walk in that what you're paying for is real estate. This place is gigantic, and empty, and full of hipster 'decorations' that make you feel like you're searching through the dregs of an estate sale. There's a lot of things on the menu, and I imagine some of them are good, but my experience was not. I ordered a small iced chai latte. $5.04. Frankly, that is too expensive for any chai latte -- but especially this one. It was very watery, not milky at all, weakly sweetened, and tasted like bitter, astringent water. Not a single spice was discernible, let alone of mixture of spices. You'd be better off going to any grocery store, buying a box of Oregon Chai, and mixing it with ice and milk at home -- seriously, that would be way better. I only had $5 cash, but again, it was $5.04. In most places, the cashier would have just called it even -- here, the cashier just stared at my as though I had asked for $10,000 dollars or all the tea in China. I even got a disgruntled look when I went to pay with my card. Tldr: Expensive, weak tea, meh decor. You can definitely do better. read more

I really want to like Forge. The veggie burger is good and the ice cream is tasty. Unfortunately the prices are a bit absurd for salads that don't have much in them and the staff can't be trusted with ANY customizations (watch out food allergy folks). Also, I get that the industrial chic look favors a concrete floor, but my daughter left looking like a coal miner. It wouldn't hurt to clean up once in a while. A cute little cafe. Tried some type of mint limeade and the boy got the raspberry lime rickey. Both drinks were good. Just a little overwhelming with the lime (but that's just my personal preference/I should have known what I was getting myself into). I don't typically feel motivated to leave reviews, but had Force Ice Cream for the first time tonight and was blown away on all fronts. Had a brownie sundae and the first thing that struck me was the price ($7) which is incredibly reasonable for the size/quality/setting. The ice cream was delicious and creamy, the toppings were generous. The ambience there is really fun and old school ice cream shoppe, complete with glass sundae bowl and vintage gum dispensers on the side. Great service too. Somehow the opening of this place slipped under my radar even though I only live a few streets away, but definitely my new favorite ice cream spot in the area (sorry Gracie's!). read more

Phenomenal pies and exceptional service. I've enjoyed grabbing a coffee and working on my laptop at Forge a number of times, but it was my recent experience that prompted this review. I had heard their pies were excellent, but I came in to find that Forge normally only stocks them occasionally for the holidays. Still, Forge's manager Shaun followed up with me via email and was kind enough to put in a special order for me for two pies (Apple & Pecan), which were phenomenal. We live within a few blocks of Forge so we were really excited when it opened up. Unfortunately, we're not too impressed. The coffee is good but the food we've had is mediocre at best (except for the bread which was great). At 11 am on a Saturday Forge was busy but not too crowded, there is lots of seating which eliminates having to hover to get a seat which is always nice, another bonus - parking in a small lot outside. This place is unjustifiably expensive; very expensive. Grilled cheese $6, hot chocolate $4.5, etc. I paid $10 for a small sandwich with hummus and a few veggies inside, nothing special. Maybe the price worth it if you plan to sit there all day and work, but if you just look for a place to get breakfast or lunch, there are much better alternatives. The only reason I'm giving them 3 stars is because they do have a few interesting things on their menu, including bread that looks pretty good (didn't try), and the location (there aren't much around). We're a family of four and on the weekends we like having breakfast out, but we're not coming back to this place. read more

I love Forge. The staff is friendly and the food is really yummy. Only comments are: 1) It is too cold! It's like a big, cold warehouse with cement floors. I know it must be tough to heat in the winter but brrr. 2) Sometimes it feels a bit too dance party-ish with the music.
