One of the better croissanteries (and if that wasn't a word, it is now) in a small shop on Broadway just off McGrath Highway. Challenging but achievable street parking. Nowhere to sit, so another challenge. Good selection of croissants and croissant-adjacent items like caneles and pain swisse. Friendly staff; no pretension. My first visit in well over a year on a late weekday morning tried a troika of chocolate-themed items. -- Chocolate Croissant: Not warm (and I wouldn't expect that past 9am), but very fresh feel, very slight greasiness on the bottom, plenty of flakiness on top, and decent fluffiness inside. A good bite, yielding plenty of croissant shrapnel, a light but pleasant buttery taste, and just the right amount of chocolate. A winner. -- Pain Swisse: This varied from others I've had, not having the typical stringiness around the perimeter that feels like raw pasta to the bite, but that was a plus. The bigger noticeable divergence was a much-lighter-than-typical custard presence inside, deferring to the dominant, high quality dark chocolate. The dough around it had good flavor and a nice light crunch, so whether central casting Pain Swisse or not, this satisfied. -- Chocolate Chip Cookie: An unusual rendition, with a dough darker than typical and also boasting some red tint hinting at red velvet. Soft, deliciously rich, and buttery, with the chocolate having a nice melt to it even late in the morning. Salt added some contrast without going overboard as some do. -- Coffee: High in temperature, acidity, viscosity, and flavor. A good match for their baked goods. I got a ham and gruyere croissant, a bun with pistachio cream, and a raspberry matcha latte (I think this was on the special/seasonal menu!). Everything is for takeout only. Walked by here and saw a crowd outside this bakery and decided to check it out. It's a tiny space with a lot of fresh baked options to choose from. I picked a croissant with ham, Gruyère cheese and Dijon mustard baked into which was delicious. This is the best bakery in Boston by far! I have been here a few times now and every single time the pastries are baked to perfection. I ordered ahead of time this time around and I am glad I did because everything I pre-ordered was already sold out by 10am on a Sunday morning. I went on a Saturday on an incredibly rainy and cold day, and when I got there around 10 am, we had to wait outside for a moment until the line was shorter inside. As an ex-big law alumna myself, I can appreciate the trajectory of Thomas, the owner of Michette who exited the big law life and is now making some of the best croissants and pastries I've had. Pro-tip: come here early on the weekends to avoid the lines and also snap up the more popular offerings before they run out. We didn't get a chance to try either the chocolate croissant or the chocolate almond croissant but ... Just look at the beautiful layers in the plain croissant and the pain suisse. I was eating elsewhere soon so wanted to conserve stomach space and originally planned to consume just half of my croissant. Well. Talk about a fool's errand. It was gone in a few bites. Nice, flaky, lots of chew in the inner soft part, crumbs everywhere (as it should be). I think the obvious comparison is Colette - Colette's version is a tad less heavy on the butter, a little more airy. Both are ones I'd eat again without question. I'll be back to try the focaccia, which looked amazing. It's times like these where I wish we had better options in Newton and also where I'm kind of glad I need to go out of my way to get these goodies. I was excited to try this bakery, and it didn't disappoint! At Friday around 8am there was no line outside and plenty of items on display. I ordered the almond croissant, and wow was it was amazing. Buttery and flaky with a generous, even layer of frangipane throughout. I really appreciate how they make sure to fill even the ends of the almond croissant with a liberal amount of filling (oftentimes, I've found that bakeries only place filling towards the middle of the croissant). Overall: what stands out about this place is their creativity to push the boundaries. They have classics but you definitely should come to try their uniqueness. Food: caneles *chefs kiss*. Don't get dissuaded by the "burnt" exterior. It's a byproduct of the copper molds used that give it that color! In fact it accentuates the caramelized taste and adds incredibly to the custard like interior. The cool goods they have that are off the beaten path include a passion fruit Madeline. You can tell they use real passion fruit by the seeds embedded into the Madeline but the best part is how the seeds aren't sour like usual. What a cute French neighborhood bakery! Once you walk in you are instantly met with the most beautiful smell of baked goods! Everything was beautifully plated on display, and I knew it would be a tough decision deciding what I was going to bring home. I went with a chocolate pistachio croissant. OMG. However, they had clearly had a busy morning because they only had two types of pastries left and were out of non-dairy milk. We got there before 9.30am on a Sunday and they were already sold out of a few items (including croissants), but we very much enjoyed the ones we tried. The Guava and Honey bacon danishes were amazing - super buttery and flaky, great mix of sweet/savory. The quiche was solid and the praline/orange marmalade cookie had a pretty unique flavor combo. You can tell this place is popular; we arrived to find there was already a line out the door. The entire place is very small, with little seating to accommodate everyone. The service was quick, but as I was waiting for my coffee, I felt there was no good place for me to stand without being in the way. For 10am on a weekend, I was surprised to find out half of their selection was already sold out, leaving us with little to choose from. Their pastries are relatively good. In general, their puff pastry dough lacked the flaky and crisp texture that is expected. The croissant was average; I probably wouldn't get it again. The other two, the fig and bacon pastries, were better, but again missed the mark when it came down to texture. I almost found them to be a little dry. The chocolate chip cookie, on the other hand, was exceptional and I would come back solely for that. One thing I found disappointing was their coffee. I dislike getting American-sized cappuccinos, because they often have a more watered down flavor. I was expecting that since this was advertised as a French bakery, their coffees would be the traditional size, but I was wrong. It didn't taste very good and I probably would not get it again. The prices were all very reasonable, especially for the area. I would come here again, but make sure to be one of the first people in the door to get good pickings. read more
