They were well baked and we appreciated the more unusual flavors. Matcha Rosemary lemonade was a tiny bit textured but the sweetness level was great (not too sweet). The matcha and rosemary were VERY light. The ham and cheese croissant was too salty and though the outside was crisp, it was a bit too soft inside. I'd be curious to try their other items -- it has a bit of a 'hit or miss' vibe. read more

Cozy cafe with friendly staff. The cafe smells wonderful when you enter. Sadly the pastry I got was pretty dense. Lavender was not overpowering which was good but I expected the concha to be airy and light. The top was not crunchy but hard. I decided to go all in with lavender "everything" so I also ordered the honey lavender latte. I asked staff to reduce half the syrup as I don't like overly sweet drinks. Came out perfect. read more

Would give them a 2.5 if it was possible. This is a quaint local bakery that's about an 8 min walk from Davis Square. Easy to drop by during the morning commute! Tried a selection of their pastries and will say they tasted average. The cinnamon roll was dry & the croissant was definitely missing flakiness. I did enjoy their lemon poppyseed scone though! Nice citrus flavor with a moist buttery inside. Maybe some pastries are better than others? I will say their staff are really nice though. Even during the early morning they're all warm + inviting. Finally a place with Italian soda! We got some cookie and drinks (pomegranate espresso tonic and pomegranate Italian soda) There was a bit of wait with line but they moved quickly. The decor was cool and cozy. The cookie was crunchy and tasty. Italian soda was great but espresso tonic was.. not bad. Maybe because I haven't had it for awhile? I really enjoyed this space- you can see the workers in the back and it's very cozy! We came at a busy time but the workers seemed to be handling the rush well. Went to the new Somerville location. Long line and busy, which is great the business is doing well. But because of such line, there were limited options, which is to be expected. The croissants and coffee were good / average to other local shops. Hope to try some other items on the menu in the future to find something that makes the shop more unique. read more

There is not a ton of seating inside and parking is limited to permitted street parking. Wow!! This bakery was such a surprise! I have tried so many bakeries and croissants but the croissant here is probably the best croissant I've had in Boston. It tasted like one I eat in Europe, flaky and buttery! The way it should be!! I tried the guava and cheese croissant and the blackberry and lemon bun! Then I see this lemon poppy seed scone and I get even more excited bc way better than what I wanted. But they gave me the wrong scone.. so I'm disgruntled. Good scone I did get, but I mean, I didn't get either things I wanted. So. Bummed. Four stars bc not disappointed in the quality. But really cranky about it bc I haven't had my coffee yet. Also - not sure if they were out of 8oz lids stock wise, but told they didn't have lids for that size. They poured it into a bigger cup for me, but was I really supposed to walk around with a hot beverage filled to the brim with no lid? Got a chocolate chip cookie even thought they looked overcooked just to give it a chance. They were definitely overcooked and I'm not a fan of a burnt cookie taste. I got a small ice mocha which was ok. I was really looking forward to the "pomegranate Italian cream soda" so I got 2 for my mom to try when she got home. These are the best baked goods that I've had in a long time. I ate all of them too quickly to take photos, but I'm looking forward to getting back there soon! I was helped by Natalie, the owner, and she was truly delightful. She took the time to answer all my questions about the pastries and we chatted about the bakery itself as well. Here's what I bought: Canele: a small French pastry that was semi-caramelized on the outside and soft custard/cake interior. Insanely delicious. Dream cookie: chocolate, marshmallows, cornflakes. Some caramelized lace had baked around the edge and OMG just so so good. M&M cookie: as an M&M cookie lover, this is the best one I've ever had. The M&Ms are throughout the dough almost at like a 50-50 ratio. Exterior was crispy, interior was soft and chocolatey. I need 100 more. read more

There's another new bakery in town! Hearth and Hug opened Sep 2023 and occupies a stall toward the rear of Boston Public Market. Everything looked tempting and I ordered the ham and cheese croissant, which was huge and covered with an everything bagel spice mix (salt, poppy seeds, garlic). The outer crust golden brown and crispy, and the interior had that flaky butteriness that all croissant lovers crave. The ham was thinly sliced, the cheese had a moderately robust Gruyère like flavor. My only complaint was that the everything but the bagel seasoning overpowered the subtle croissant flavors--I'd recommend to the baker to offer an option without those spices. Somerville location: Living up the "hearth" part there is like a burnt smell to the place. I got a chocolate chip/pumpkin cookie, which had burned cookie taste/smell. Very off putting. The staff working there all had like dirty shirts (from cooking) - an apron would be more appropriate. The Covid face mask is getting old, you know those masks accumulate and harbor bacteria just like a dirty man's beard? Anyway, I'm hesitant to go back to try coffee. If this bakery place burns cookies and has issues described in others' reviews then I'm not going back to be paying for overpriced coffee. read more

Extremely nice people and delicious bread. I've gotten the sourdough on multiple occasions, and I think it's the best sourdough you can get within 20 mins of downtown Boston. It's chewy, dense, and delicious. This place is a win. read more

Heard about this newish spot in Haymarket while searching for the best croissant in the Boston area. A bit disappointed by the croissant. It was quite small. I prefer a light airy and delicate croissant and this wasn't that. It was dense and the outside was thick. I enjoyed the bottom which was extremely buttery and crispy. It also had a great salt level but also a slightly odd taste that I couldn't quite pin down. I think just a style of croissant that I don't enjoy as much. read more

Hearth & Hug is a wonderful bakery that just opened up! I work nearby and have tried a few menu items and everything is delicious. Items rotate during the week and with seasonal ingredients and flavors. Some ingredients are sourced from other vendors in the Boston Public Market which I think is incredible! My favorite so far is the ham and cheese croissant, it has a nice flakiness, the ham and cheese are great quality, and I love the everything seasoning on top. If I ever see them in stock I grab one since they go quickly in the mornings! I also tried a blondie with an orange jelly/ marmalade (can't remember exactly but it was delicious!) The blondie was so rich and the orange added such a nice texture and brightness to the treat. I look forward to my next blondie and to see what fun ingredients are in it next! Their pretzels are also delicious! I had one with the everything seasoning and it adds such a nice touch to pretzel. They also have the option to add mustard! Lastly, I also tried a chocolate chip cookie. The cookie has a crispy edge with a very buttery, delicious center. The chocolate inside was super rich but it wasn't too overpowering. The cookie was super balanced and such a classic treat. The owner Natalie is absolutely wonderful. She is so nice and I enjoy chatting with her every time I'm there.
