Although I like supporting small Asian businesses, this place doesn't seem to have good organization, sorry to say. =/ The benefits of going here is that they have really good prices for altering clothing that are normally much more expensive than other alterations places (i.e. my wedding & reception dress which cost $50 & $65). However, the few times I've been there, they seem to misplace things. The last time I was there, a guy was waiting to pick up his clothes that he got dry cleaned, but there was one shirt that was missing from the batch they were supposed to return to him. The lady said she couldn't find it, & would call him to let him know when they do find the shirt. Mmm... that sucks for him. =/ Also, I've brought my jackets & coats to them before, & they didn't make the cuffs that well. They even got a little pink stain on one of the cuffs, but they offered to dry clean it out, so I hope that's gone when I go pick it up next. read more

I'm so in LOVE! $11 for original hem, $6 for regular, but I really don't see the point in getting regular. They open form 7am-7pm daily. I now take all my premium denim jeans here to have them altered. They do a really good job and its done usually in less then a week. I use to get my jeans altered in Pasadena for $15 and they weren't even original hem. number 1 place for jean alteration! read more

I was first referred to Formosa by a fashionista friend who owned tons of premium denim. I needed some denim hemmed and department stores and other cleaners seemed to charge at LEAST $20 for original seam. (Original seam is exactly what it sounds like--the bottom part is kept and sort of just 'moved up' from the inside so you don't have a crisp, too-fresh looking hem.) Formosa charges an unbelievable $8 for original seam, and $5 for regular hemming! Not only that, but there's almost always a 2-day turnaround, and the staff is friendly and helpful. They especially make my day when they give me opinions on what might be too long, what denim might shrink, etc. Seems to really matter to them that I'm happy with the end result. My roommate and I have both had at least 10 things hemmed there and I've always been satisfied. As for the four stars instead of five--I did have one bad dry cleaning experience there. I dry-cleaned a friends shirt (albeit it was a cheap Forever 21 shirt) and all the elastic broke apart within the shirt. The shirt probably said "do not dry clean" but I didn't notice. Maybe I was expecting too much, but it would have been nice if they'd had pointed that out to me before I paid them. I did get a refund but no reimbursment for the shirt. I love formosa. The owner lady is super sweet. She always helps me when I come to get my clothes altered, which is pretty frequent. I usually come here to get my jeans shortened because they do original hemming here. I just recently started getting my formal-wear and other dresses altered here (also shortened). Oh the life of a short girl. My friend got her bridal gown alterations done at Formosa. They did an amazing job. She also bought beading in downtown LA and they made her a customized beaded sash for her gown. It was beautiful and definitely less expensive than buying one from the bridal store. I would never have thought of the idea but it's genius! I trust Formosa with all my clothing and their prices are reasonable. I forgot how much my previous alterations were but my recent one was $12 per dress. It really all depends on the fabric and what you need to do to it. read more

I admit, i'm not the most picky person when it come to alterations since i'm usually willing to wear my pants with the bottoms scraping the floor. If i'm not too lazy, sometimes i'm willing to bend over and actually fold them. However, now I work in an office that apparently doesn't even believe in casual friday. I was suddenly forced into shopping spree for slacks...and then I realized that stapling hems just doesn't cut it anymore. I got all 6 pairs of my slacks hemmed here (wow! $5 each!), all within 3 days! Now I'm a regular here...dropping off dry cleaning every couple of weeks. I think they love me! I live in pasadena which usually forces me to be at the mercy of high priced cleaners out here, but fortunately this place is located between home and work. thank you god. Once in awhile a stain will be missed, but I've asked people that have either owned a cleaners or worked at one. Basically, if you don't point it out to them, they're not going to try extra hard to get that stain out even if it's obvious. At most they'll ask if you want them to spot remove it. You have to tell them and so they'll tag it. Makes sense though...they're not gonna be looking for every skid mark inside your pants. all in all, great people, great service, and great prices. ********************************************** 4/14/08 Just an update, I noticed that some pp's mention the extra line of stitching on the front and back of the pant leg when the original hem is done on a pair of jeans. My first pair does not have this stitching and after washing them a couple times I figured out what these little lines are for. It keeps the attached original hem from flipping up whenever you wash them. The material will have a natural tendency to flip up where it's attached. It's annoying that mine doesn't have it since i have to keep folding it back (sometimes it required ironing). So yes people...there is a method to their madness!! read more

I came here for alterations. It was the cheapest place I found to have three vintage skirts hemmed and a swimsuit top altered. I tried another place first in Pasadena and they wanted to charge over double what I paid at Formosa. They did a great job on both the skirts and the top. I was pleasantly surprised. So being short sucks. Pants/slacks/jeans that need no alterations are hard to find. You're either scraping the floor with your seemingly freakishly long legwear, or folding up the cuffs of your pants as if nobody could notice (we can btw). So the vertically challenged have two choices: wear unflattering pants or pay more to look normal sized. Sad, but true. Tired of being unsatisfied with my mom's best efforts to correct lengthy jeans, I began outsourcing the work to professionals. I went to a previous tailor on Del Mar and they did a horrendous job of hemming pants (and ruined perfectly good jeans in the process). Determined to find a place that can do an original hem right, I looked to yelp for guidance. Yet again, yelp to the rescue! I recently bought a pair of pants from Gap that needed some fixing. $6 bux flat, ready in two days, although if you're in a hurry, they can probably turn it around in one. They looked great and were ironed beautifully. I also had a pair of jeans that I thought were the right length, but after wearing them for one afternoon, the bottoms frayed like crazy and even formed a goddamn hole! Seriously, not cool. Determined to alter them, I brought them to Formosa and tried them on so they could 'safety-pin' the excess fabric. I wanted the original hem despite the damage already done, and she said she'll "try". They were ready in a couple days and were $9 bux. Most importantly, they look great. No evidence of any alteration. Exactly what you want. Awesome! Come here for all your alteration needs. Now there's no good reason to hang on to those god-awful baggy jeans. This was my first time bringing items to a dry cleaner, so I wasn't sure what to expect. My brain was filled with horrific images of damaged clothing, items lost, chemicals, etc. But, I was tired of staring at the big bag of dry cleaning just staring at me, so it needed to be done. I found Formosa on Yelp first, then asked my mother where she usually brought her dry cleaning. Coincidentally, she named Formosa. So, I figured that with two recommendations, it must be fate. I came in on a Thursday, the weekend before Chinese New Year (which was on that upcoming Monday.) It's hard to turn into when you're coming from the opposite way, so I had to pass it and make a U turn. If you're not paying attention, you could miss it. It's on a pretty busy street, so I'm really glad they have parking in the back. I awkwardly waited at the counter for a few minutes, with workers just staring at me, waiting to be helped. When I was finally helped, it was a good experience. The guy asked me what day I needed it, so I said any day, no rush. But he named Saturday and Monday, which didn't work, because I had previous engagements on Saturday, and Monday was Chinese New Year. I know he was so done with me because I said "no rush" but basically wanted it the next day lol! My bad. But, he made it possible. I came back the next day, gave him my receipt, and that was it. It ended up being about $15 for a pair of slacks, a delicate cream blouse, and an expensive peacoat. There was no chemical smell that I feared, and everything felt/was clean. My slacks were neatly pressed, and everything was wrinkle-free. It was much easier to do than I'd previously thought - they made everything go smoothly and efficiently. It was my first dry cleaners, but I won't be searching for another. This is now my go-to, and I definitely recommend them. read more

I was first introduced to Formosa Cleaners by my sister. We're both very sad now that we cannot go here regularly because we moved 30 miles away (in opposite directions). My aunt and good friend still go here. Lucky them. I love places where they know my name and know how I like things done. Yes, the prices (for dry-cleaning) are a bit higher than other cleaners, but I never had a problem with my clothes in the years that I've been going to Formosa Cleaners (even at their old location). I had designer jeans hemmed there as well, and was very happy...with the end result of the original hemming AND with the $8 price. And as fellow reviewers have said, they give you advice on what will look good and what won't when measuring/pinning. I even had my curtains hemmed there. With their long work hours, picking up clothes after a long drive home from work isn't a problem. You'll see plenty of people there during the 6-7pm hour. Quick turnaround (2-3 days), and completely affordable. Original seam hemming is only $8 for jeans. You will find their alterations section always has 50-75 jeans waiting for service. Don't get me wrong, I love how their hours are very convenient. I like the idea that they steam/dry clean when you ask for hemming or alterations to be done. I've came here many times for awhile. Did my bridesmaid dress and hemming pants. I didn't care much of the bridesmaid dress, however I had to alter at least 3-4 different times because she couldn't get the measurements right. The last thing was the hemming. When I did my pants here, I got it the next day. I went home and tried it on and felt that it was too long, so I went back just to get it redone. She remeasured it, and the first measurements were completely wrong! I got very upset and decided to take my alterations elsewhere. They are very friendly, however, think twice before doing alterations on your pants, their measurements don't match on each leg. read more

This place is amazing! Our go to place when we need any altering or dry cleaning done. We have had numerous Jiu Jitsu gi's patched and altered here. Besides that, we've had numerous alterations done on our sons designer pants and jackets. The best part is that they are so quick! We needed a Jiu Jitsu gi patched the same day for a competition and Formosa got it done in 4 hours when other places were asking for a week or more! Don't waste your time going any where else! I must say, I was ecstatic when I asked a friend who wears a lot of designer denim for a recommendation of a good hemming place and was told that Formosa Cleaners was supposed to be good. The place was about 5 minutes from where I lived, and when I went to inquire about hemming, I found out not only was it convenient, it was cheap too! At the time it cost 5 for a regular hem for jeans and 8 for keeping the original hem. I saw a sample, was satisfied enough with the sample, and handed over my citizens. A few days later, I got back what has now become my favorite pair of everyday jeans. I don't know about black jeans, because it sounds like one reviewer really disliked the job done on theirs, but I have had 3 pairs of blue jeans hemmed there and have been 150% satisfied. I even got them to patch up an old pair of sevens that ripped in 3 places, and the patchwork was great and only cost $9 total! (the knee was more expensive because it was a big hole and they have to take apart the whole leg in order to patch up the knee, otherwise it's about $2 per hole) I find that unless I look reeeeeally closely, I can't tell that my jeans have been cut and altered at all. But hey, maybe they are only good at hemming blue jeans and finding matching thread colors for those. I never noticed but I do have an inch-long stitch in the middle of each of the hems - I say that I never noticed because you seriously can't tell that the line is there on any of my jeans - I am going to post pictures after writing this review to show you. Overall, I guess maybe you should be wary of taking in a pair of black jeans to get hemmed. But if you have normal blue jeans, go ahead and try it. You will not be disappointed. Such great value for the money! (I was a little upset when they raised the prices of everything by $1 - not that it was going to cost me more, but because I had just gotten something hemmed like a couple weeks before the price raise and they failed to notify me of the raise) ************** one more thing - I came back to get yet another pair of jeans hemmed, and this time, was a little disappointed because it was the man that pinned the jean bottoms, not the lady. I always come here to get my jeans hemmed. They do a great original hem. A month ago I dropped off my jeans and then came back a couple days later to pick them up. My jeans weren't hemmed yet and they told me to come back the next day. I was kind of mad that I had to come back again....but when I showed up the next day, my jeans were done and they didn't charge me anything at all! That's good customer service. I love this place been coming here for years and I always take my cloths here but I dropped off my work pants to get cleaned on Saturday and I asked someone to pick them up for me since I didn't have time to pick them up that up coming Monday. I come home and apparently they couldn't find my pants and gave me someone else's pants! Boys jeans 10 sizes too big when I gave them my women's slacks? I'm going back in the morning to see if we can resolve this so I can change my review. :( Update!!! I went this morning before coming to down town for work and I bought back the pants I was given and the owner searched for a few min but found my pants! I give 4 stars b/c sometimes the quality of the dry cleaning isn't the best (e.g. a stain might not come off or something might fade/shrink-- just a little bit). I'm sure these incidents were probably out of their hands. In my case, the stain was probably permanent and the fading/shrinking was part of the normal wear and tear of washing clothes. Basically, you get what you pay for. The quality is average, but the turnover rate is really fast (2-3 days) and Lee (the owner) is super nice. read more

I brought in a pair of jeans to be original-hemmed. met a pleasant hispanic lady at the front desk, gave her the desired measurements, and hoped for the best. The drop off was on Wednesday evening. We agreed that pick up would be Friday morning and they'd call me if they were ready earlier. Friday morning came and no calls, so I went to pick up. It was ready, as expected and they did a fantastic job. I couldn't even tell that they were tailored! I was very pleased with the service and that they overlooked that I brought my recently surgerized dog in briefly to make the payment, since I didn't wanna leave her in the car. Nice! Guys, guys. I got my suit and blouse dry cleaned here for like $14 (if I remember correctly). And on top of that, they did it in like 7 hours. WHOAAAAAAA. To be fair, I did ask if they did same day (or at least next-day) and they said, eh, we'll do it today since our machines need to be repaired tomorrow. My grandfather loves this place and insisted on taking me here when I said I really needed to get stuff dry cleaned. He said "just so you know, it's on the expensive side but the quality is really good." I was in shock when it came out several dollars cheaper than I expected. A lot of places will charge you $14 for the suit alone. It's a shame I don't actually live in the area, otherwise all of my dry cleaning would go here. read more

The owners are super nice and the service is phenomenal. I've had my clothes tailored here and the lady will always offer suggestions on tailoring to make sure it comes out great. I lost a button once on one of my suit jackets and didn't really notice until I took it to a conference a few months later. When I took my clothes to get cleaned i asked if they had found a button. They looked and said they couldn't find it. I didn't think much of it since it was a few months ago and started the hunt to see if I could find another one to replace it. Over the next few months, every time I picked up and/or dropped off my clothes, I would follow up on the off chance they found it. Good thing I did because it was finally found! This place get A's all across the board. First off, Rosario the worker is the nicest, most friendliest worker there.She is always glad to assist people. At times I have gone in there and it has to be at least 105F and she still has a smile on her face. Last night was, what finally did it for me. I bought a pair of jeans and being that I am short I needed them hemmed and tailored. I went in at 6:07p and asked if she would tailor while I waited. At first there was a little hesitation, but then she said of course. She did not charge me extra. By 6:25p they were done. I went out and the pants were tailored just to my liking.
