I attended the Dental Hygiene program at Fortis and I have nothing but great things to say about this program. Ill start with the wonderful Professor Guillory, she truly wants all students to succeed. She will go out of her way to make sure students have all information and skills they need to become a phenomenal Dental Hygienist. Other staff such as Dr Braxton, Dr skinner, Professor King are amazing as well. Ive learned so much from each and every one of them. With this program you have to find your own patients. With help of family and advertising finding patients wont be in issue. The dental clinic is inside of the school which is very convenient. Hours were flexible so I still was able to work. I can go on and on about how great this program is, I high recommend if your thinking about going in the hygiene field. The worst school I've have even been to. It's a private school every college tuition here goes directly to overhead and not to the students needs. They will tell you anything to get you to go to this school. Very low budget supplies for how much tuition is. All uniforms are unidentifiable (no name embroidered) and unisex. My schedule changed for a consecutive 2 years. No breaks for 8 hour days and only a 30 min lunch. They say they offer tutoring this isn't true. I wouldn't recommend any one to this school. read more

I went through the dental hygiene program at Fortis. There was never a time that I thought my professors were not in my corner. Dr. Braxton knows his stuff. He'll get you excited to learn what he's teaching. Mrs. Swofford had the best associations to help us through radiology. And Ms Guillery always there to listen and push us. As a hygienist now, I am confident and able to help my parents because of the education I received at Fortis. My patients always mention how knowledgeable and through I am. I graduated top 5 of my class in 2012 and still haven't found a permanent position in the dental field....meaning I'm still accumulating debt for my student loans....they have yet assisted me in finding a position in my field...my advice go to a four year college it'll be well worth it read more

I graduated from Fortis in 2017 from the Dental Hygiene program. I spent almost 3 years of my life there and I considered everyone there family! My instructors and program directors taught me everything I needed to prepare me for my National boards and clinical boards! I get compliments from my patients in my practice that I'm so knowledgeable in my degree. I would recommend this program to anyone that is interested in pursuing a career in Dental Hygiene. My employer loves how I was taught clinical hygiene and also admires that I have a associates degree. I felt fully prepared for all of my exams and I had fun doing it! The instructors at Fortis are amazing and they made my almost 3 years enjoyable! There were hard classes but they made sure we had the resources and spent time with us to make sure we understood! I attended Fortis for 12 weeks in 2015. During those weeks I had many issues with the institution not living up to the standards they claimed to have. Below I have written out a few of the bigger issues I had with the school. The school is not SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) accredited. I was told by two separate colleges that my credits from Fortis will not transfer due to Fortis not being accredited. Very few days my classes started on time. I drove and hour and twenty minutes to and from school each day. I made sure to wake up early to be on time. Certain students were late almost daily. One teacher even waited up to 45 minutes for a student before starting class. Certain teachers would give out tests and quizzes then leave the room for any amount of time. This gave students the opportunity to cheat and talk. I did not want to be included in any sort of punishment that would come if the teacher would have come back and saw over half the class chatting it up. Rules were rarely enforced. The institution claimed to have high standards for their students yet rules were broken regularly. Teachers willingly offer their cell phone number to their students so that if the student has a question then they could come in contact with the teacher. Many times I tried to contact a teacher yet not one time did the teacher respond. Tests are not given back after they have been corrected. How can someone learn from their mistakes if they do not even know what mistake they made? Giving a test back to a student for a few minutes so the student can see what they did wrong is a teaching tool this institution does not provide. I was shocked to see that students who failed most tests ended up with a same passing grade very close to mine. The school has a different and unique way of grading students. Students are graded on showing up on time, staying for the full class, and participating in class. That grading system goes along with the typical test and quiz grading. I showed up on time and was always one of the top 3 best graded students for tests. I was shocked to discover that I passed the class just a few points higher than those students who failed most or all tests. The school insists that a student is never charged for a book they do not receive. I paid in cash up front for 12 weeks of school. That included books that were issued to me. There was an activity book that I did not receive till 3 weeks into a class. Keep in mind each class is only 6 weeks long. Upon receiving the book I was instructed to go back and work on chapters that we had already finished 1 to 3 weeks prior. I felt that I was being punished and rushed to get work done that should have been done weeks ago. Had the book been given to me at the start of class then there would have not been any issues. The school is constantly on back order with supplies that students pay for. They know how many students they have entering into each program ahead of time so the books should have been ordered in a timely manner according to the classes. Financial aid was constantly messing up my paperwork. I was not able to get a definite cost to the program until 5 minutes prior to my first class. I made sure to attend all my appointments and turn in all my paperwork and the school was unable to do their part. I called the head of financial aid a few times expressing my concern about my military benefit not being processed through VA Once. I was never called back on the issue. I then decided to send an email 2 days later on the matter. Within 30 minutes I had received an email from VA Once stating my claim had been processed. The financial aid office never emailed me or called me back apologizing for their mistake. I have worked in a veteran office at a previous school and I know that returning a phone call or replying to an email is proper etiquette. I gave the financial aid office plenty of time to handle the issue and contact me. I spoke with the Dean about all of these issues and she was very nice about things. She wrote down all of my complaints and addressed each one. She reassured me that she had no indication of any of the issues I have previously outlined. She stated that she is going to look into each complaint and then address them accordingly. I have not been back to school at Fortis so I am unsure if anything has changed. read more
