I came here because of yelp. Party of four . When we arrived we almost turned back ,because of the facade of the restaurant. We wanted a nice Chineese restaurant and not a take out place. Inside there were many tables and it's not your typical Chineese restaurant.you can also order out ,like your typical Chineese restaurant. It was too late to turn back and we went in. It needs a bit of updating , but there were families , couples. And many guests. Due to there was traffic we felt better . I felt much better when we saw Asian folks eating there, so it should be good. Also saw a full bar , now we are staying . We ate family style , many apps and one main dish. The food was very good , the service was also good and the price was also right . Spent about 60 bucks and still took food home. The cocktail was very strong . The zombie, which is some sort of rum punch gave me more than a buzz. I was slurring a bit after that drink. I have to give this restaurant 5 stars. 1. Food tastes great 2. Diverse menu, interesting specials 3. Their kitchen crew whips up dishes faster than any restaurant I've ever been to...not even sure how it's possible. This is a huge plus since I have little kids. 4. Prices are standard 5. It's clean and presented well, which is a huge step above "Chinatown" The usual fried noodles and duck sauce keep my little ones happy for a while. Ordered food comes out in 5-8 minutes + there is a fish tank by the entrance and a tv on the wall. If you are looking to try and eat at a "restaurant" with your little ones (it can be daring with some kids!), try eating here. You'll be in and out in no time. Absolutely the best Chinese food that I have ever had. Their homemade steamed dumplings melt in your mouth, the egg rolls are fantastic, the pork lo mien, egg drop soup and won ton soup are always on point but my absolute favorite is the Sesame Chicken. Fortune Garden is almost like a "landmark" in Rockland County. I started going there in the early 80's. It was where we celebrated birthdays, graduations and eveything else. I remember ny co workers from the city back then would know of Fortune Garden as soon as I mentioned I lived in Nanuet. We got to know the staff really well and the staff not just remembered our names but all their regular customers. But in the last year, I am not sure if management has changed, the familiar friendly faces are gone, maybe there were also changes in the kitchen staff... The food seems to taste different. The last time I went there was to order some take out after a looong day at work. There was a lot of people waiting by the counter, some to be seated, some for "pick-up" and sone like me who wanted to place "take oit" orders. We saw just one waitress taking care of the seated customers. Perhaps the rest of the wait staff were in the kitchen? Three min have passed (yes, I kept watch of the time), and no one came to the counter at all. Now 3 minutes is a looong time to be left waiting at an eating establishment... someone could have come out to check to at least say it was a busy night...Sadly, I was starving to death so I had to walk out and go to Jersey Mike's instead, lol! I am giving FG 2** - deserves a one star but the second one is be size I al hoping that night I was there was just a bad night. Was not a fan. First time going , and probably last time. the portion size may look big on the dinner combos but I feel like it was mainly the rice and barely any meat. Food was very good, however our waiter was extremely rude especially to a young couple sitting next to us. He completely ignored them and took orders from others who arrived after them. They received no water or noodles to start and were rudely spoken to when the waiter finally decided to take their order. Restaurant was not air conditioned. HIGHLY DISAPPOINTING! If 2020 was a Chinese Restaurant, it'd be Fortune Gardens. I remember coming here as a kid and the food was amazing. But ever since the pandemic there food has never been the same. The last order I had was single handedly the worst Chinese food I've ever had in my life. The sesame chicken was old and dry as hell, rice was greasy as fuck, and the food was overall flavorless. I really hope they get back to the way it was before because this is just pitiful. We were a party of over 4. I happened to taste some of the food the other members of the table had as well because they were travelling and so gave me some of their food to take home. Here's the facts. The Chicken in Chicken with broccoli was rubbery like a rock. The chicken inside Sweet and Sour chicken tasted like a frozen rat flesh fried. The rice was atleast 2-3 days old. The egg drop soup tasted extremely bad , I couldn't take more than 3 sips. It was too much. Last but not least, the server was extremely chatty with us. I understand normal server - customer talk, but this guy just kept interrupting us for no reason and talked over us more than a few times and was even talking to us as if he knew us personally , which was extremely rude. This was such a waste of time and money . I really that I don't feel sick when I wake up tomorrow morning. I am writing this review so people can be warned properly. That's all. I'm really just disappointed with this place. their rice is always undercooked, their 'small' portions constitute as 60% less food than anywhere else. their normal, large portions are half the size of any other chinese spot and the prices are twice more expensive. the meat such as the lamb, is always burnt. all their tofu dishes have TOO much peanut oil going on that you taste just peanuts and never the sauce. I'm frankly surprised they've stayed in business for as long as they have. I've ordered twenty minutes before closing, got there in ten minutes, and the door was already locked in my face. just very rude and the food is bearable for people that love to waste money. Was so happy to learn that Fortune Garden reopened recently. We ordered fried wontons, wonton/egg drop soup mix, two different kinds of fried rice, and beef with broccoli. They said to give them about an hour, and when I got there, they were just bringing it out of the kitchen. It was hot and fresh and delicious. They are incredibly busy. The phone never stops ringing, but they are polite and ready to go, just have a little patience. And they had wontons, which nobody else seems to have!! read more

The food here is good. However the waitress with long blond hair needs to put her hair in a bun. She has it in a pony tail. However, her hair is so long that every time she looks to the side her hair goes into the plates with food. Same when she's cleaning the tables. Her hair is all over the table. That's disgusting. It's 1983 and Fortune Garden opens. I'm 13 years old and am spending my summer not in camp, but riding my bike all over Rockland County. A growing boy can works up quite an appetite. Up until this point in my youth, Chinese Food had been relegated to the familiar Cantonese dishes that my parents generation had grown up on. Moo Goo Gai Pan, Fried Rice, Wonton Soup, Egg Foo Young and Moo Shoo were my Chinese Restaurant vocabulary. I liked it a lot but, not anymore than Italian or Burgers. Fortune Garden was responsible for my introduction to the spicier and more creative side of Szechwan cuisine. I would mark this moment as the genesis of my lifelong passion for all food Asian. While the palate has become more refined and I have matured as an eater, 31 years has not diminished my fondness for Fortune Gardens. In my opinion they were and still are the best Chinese restaurant in NY's Northern and Western suburbs. This includes Rockland, Westchester, Putnam, Orange, and Dutchess Counties. There maybe another one you like, but if you've been to FG too, you wouldn't put yours up against them. I have recently moved to Austin, Texas but am visiting family in NY for Thanksgiving. Stopping at FG is of course a must and doing so after a 6 month absence was close to a spiritual experience for me. It's home, and more than that, it isn't sentimentality only that elicits this euphoria, it's something more concrete: It's Still Amazing Food!!! They still have it dialed in. Hot and Sour Soup, Shredded Beef with Carrots in a Szechuan dry sauce, General Tso's, Beef With Garlic Sauce. It's all just so good....Rockland is lucky to have this standard bearer. My family's third experience with Fortune Garden ended up horribly. The first time my husband and I bought take- out and brought it to a friend and everything was ok, and actually each dish tasted good. Then I brought my my for lunch ad she loved the spare ribs we had a nice meal brought the left overs home and everything was good too. Then I brought my mom there on her birthday (8/5/2015) and both my 88 year old mom and my husband got food poisoning. They were so sick with extreme diarrhea. It was a warm day,they were quite busy and somebody must have gotten sloppy and careless in the kitchen, which is inexcusable. I will NEVER trust them again. We walked into the restaurant and there was zero ambiance. The cashier was nice. The fried rice was tasteless and greasy. The General Tso was soggy and warm, like it was last night's leftovers sitting in grease and sauce. Chewy and dry. Way too sweet. The roast pork and vegetables was mediocre at best but totally overcooked. Veggies should be slightly al dente, but were soggy. Hot and sour soup was watery and the wonton soup was inedible. Can always count on Fortune Garden for a quick in and out pick up and delicious lunch. I'm a big fan of their $6 lunch combos. IT really is a good deal considering how much food you get. I'm a big fan of their crunchy steak tips with friend pork rice. Another winner that I recently had from them was their chicken with broccoli combo. The thing was bursting from my container. The fried rice was great and not soggy and the steamed Broccoli was very filing and went well with the chicken. So good. After reading the Yelp reviews, I decided to head over here. "Best Chinese in Rockland!", some of the reviews said. I ordered ahead and drove over. Turns out, it's an actual restaurant. I was expecting a take-out Chinese place. The place looks tidy, located in the strip mall across from Home Depot, Bob's Furniture, and Red Lobster. As I walked in, there were a few Chinese families seated in the restaurant. Nice - there are actually Asian families in Rockland. And of course, if they eat here, the food must be pretty decent. There are plaques from local community groups and police giving recognition to the owner, along with some framed, autographed pictures from celebrities and sports players, reminding people that this guy probably gets out of most speeding tickets. Ordered the mapo tofu and house lomein. I was disappointed. The mapo tofu is advertised is hot/spicy, but it was very bland. The house lomein didn't have much flavor. Just a bunch of noodles stir fried with some vegetables. Best in Rockland? I haven't been to other Chinese restaurants here so it's hard to tell, but if it really is the best.. wow.. I'll give it another shot some day, but it definitely won't be my go-to place when I'm craving Chinese. read more

It's a fact that outside of Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan, good Chinese food is hard to come by. That's why when my wife and I moved to Rockland we pretty much accepted the fact we'd have to come into the city when we wanted Chinese food. Then we went into Fortune Garden. Then we realized how lucky we were. Fortune Garden rivals Chinatown restaurants and surpasses most NYC take out places in quality. Thing is, Fortune Garden doesn't do delivery so you either dine-in or take-out. But I'll deal with the sometimes slight inconvenience for great Chinese food. What's also funny about this place is that the basic American Chinese food place menu items such as eggrolls, sesame chicken, etc. are hit or miss. That's not when Fortune Garden is at it's best. Try the less common items such as twice cooked pork, sesame beef, beef with scallions, or anything else on the menu that sounds good. The food here is subpar and decor is outdated. They do have a bar, but the range of drinks is limited. I ordered chicken wings, fried rice and gyoza. The gyoza was pretty standard in comparison to what I've had before and the chicken wings and rice left much to be desired. I have been going here since i was about 5 years old and i will continue to go here until forever. If you have any taste buds and love chinese food, this is the place to go. Its not your normal fast food chinese, this is top notch. I believe Fortune Garden rivals Chinatown restaurants, especially for the people that do not want to go into the city to get some. Rockland county really doesn't have much to offer when it comes to good ethnic food. Many people around here will tell you Bardonia Oriental is the best around......I'll tell you it used to be. We had a great time at dinner here last night, feasting on Peking duck, spicy beef, pork lo mein, sesame chicken, and sautéed baby bok choy. We were surprised that the dining room has been given a major facelift, sporting a beautiful new bar, new floors, and new colors. We started off with Mai-Tais, and let me assure you no one makes them better. Accompanying our beverages were fried dumplings, Shrimp toast, and boneless spareribs. The food was absolutely delicious, on par with some of the best Chinese restaurants in Manhattan. The Peking duck deserves special mention-the meat was flavorful without being greasy, and the separate portion of duck legs served was crispy and delicious. The baby bok choy was done in the garlic sauce and it was as fresh as could be, simply amazing. My hat's off to Steve and his team here, you won't regret coming here. Not the best location, but easily one of the better Chinese restaurants in Rockland. My favorite is their lo mein as they use actual egg noodles and not spaghetti like the other quick places. Unfortunately, our favorite Chinese restaurant must have changed hands. We have been eating here for over 20 years and it was the best. Now, the food isn't fresh, sesame chicken so tough we couldn't bite through it, even the basic egg roll wasn't edible. Tough and dry. Second time we've tried ordering take out wanting to give another chance hoping it was just an off day and both times food not good. Each time I called and asked to speak to manager explaining we want to continue to support local, but food needs attention. He was extremely rude and basically told me that "no one else has any complaints. Same cook!" The old manager/owner, Steve, was always accommodating and friendly. Too bad! Don't waste your money.
