We had booked a private tour for his birthday to meet the rescue animals who call this beautiful place home. Yasmin met us at the entrance and, after swapping shoes for some solid boots, gave us a very honest, very real, and very important rundown of industrial agriculture. Now, I have to add, neither of us are vegan or even vegetarian, but Yasmin proved to be an actively non judgmental, compassionate host. She walked us through the grounds, addressing each animal by name, and was full of knowledge and insight! After the initial meet and greet, we were off! We hiked across the beautiful grounds and met tons of sheep (Jet loved my partner!) goats, and pigs; all of the animals roam freely, coming and going as they please. It was actually delightful how so many of the animals came up to say hi and hang out out of their own volition! We brought some grapes for the chickens and they LOVED them! But oh my god, the turkeys. Wow, just, two little friendly, fluffy orbs that floated around our party showing off while Yasmin gave us an informed and empathetic story about them. She did that at every habitat; letting us in, introducing us (by name!) to the boldest of the bunch, and explaining how they ended up at Animal Place. It was an entirely wonderful, enlightening experience. Also, fyi, turkeys are so soft. I cannot recommend this organization enough. 10/10, please give Conrad an extra treat for me!

After over 7 years without a dog in our lives, my family was finally ready to add a four legged…read moremember to our household. I contacted 5 rescue groups and I have to say that Chako out shined them all. I contacted and met with one foster within a couple of days at a park. Although the dog wasn't the right match, the foster was incredibly helpful. A week later, I saw another dog pop up on the website that I was interested in, so I filled out another application. It was received and replied to promptly. They let me know that it would be forwarded to the foster and I would be contacted shortly. I received an email from them a day later, asking to set up a phone interview. We had a long chat and he informed me that another application had come in for the same pup before mine. I appreciated the honesty and he gave me a lot of good information & resources. I ended up adopting from our local shelter but I wanted to thank Chako for their professionalism & courtesy. We are looking into their classes for our little man. Thank you Chako!!

If you are looking to add a dog to your family it is important not to buy one from a pet shop, off…read morethe street, or from an ad. Adoption is the way to go. Not only will you not be contributing to the breeding and overpopulation of dogs, but you are helping to save the lives of the one you adopt and also of the one that can now take it's place in the care of a foster home. Because rescued dogs are kept in foster homes, their personality, behavior, and habits become known, and they usually get some assistance with training and learning house manners while there so as to come better able to fit into their new home. CHAKO evaluates dogs for soundness of temperament before taking them into their rescue program, and they also offer ongoing socialization, and training classes. If you live in the Sacramento area and already have a bully breed dog that needs some additional training, this is a good resource. Wonderful dogs are always available to adopt so check them out, or you can volunteer to become a foster and have the pleasure of helping many dogs over time.
