Before coming to Foster's, I got an estimate on repairs for many parts of my car at multiple shops. Everywhere was around $1900-2100. Foster's charged only $1250 and has been the best service with the most hospitable owners I have ever met within this industry! Mike and Alan will tell you exactly what problems your cars are having and offer you options for your vehicle. I let them know I only plan to use my car for a couple more years as it's getting old and worn. Unlike other places that are sketchy and corporate owned, they offered me the best parts but even offered me cheaper options knowing my car's situation. They don't make as much profit off it but Alan and Mike aren't in the business to cheat you out of your money; they're in the business for their love of cars and to carry on the family business. They even gave me a ride back to my place and picked me up once my car was done. These guys can get your car in and out of the shop within a day, whatever the task may be. Don't get cheated out of your money by going to a corporate owned shop. Not that I'm against corporations, but it's undeniable that a corporation's goal is to make as much profit as possible. I have called and visited around Houston and Foster's has by far the lowest labor rate, which is why they're such a great deal. They give you an even lower labor rate when it's your first visit. Mike and Alan want the best for you and will only recommend things for your car if you actually need it, not to try to yank an extra dollar off you. I took my car to Foster's to be diagnosed. They claim it needed an engine replacement. My extended warranty company denied the claim. Foster charged me $138.00 for the diagnostic. I asked service advisor Cameron to give me a estimate on an engine replacement. Cameron quoted nearly $5000 for an engine with 84,000 miles on it. He said the warranty would be only six months. I said no, I can't accept the estimate and asked for my car on Friday (June 19, 2026). Cameron stated that he could not get my car out because there was 20 cars in the way and that he did not have the man power to move all those cars and that I would need to come back on Monday (June 22, 2026). When I received my car, I could not drive it because the steering was malfunctioned. Cameron looked at my car and stated that the power steering fluid was leaking out. I explained to Cameron that my car was not leaking power steering fluid when I brought the car to Foster's. I am convinced that Cameron INTENTIONALLY damaged my power steering. I have had my car since 2014 and have NEVER had a power steering leak until I picked my car up from Foster's. Cameron is neither an honest nor an honorable man. I will NEVER take my car to Foster's again. read more

I've been here a few times over the years but today was my last visit. I went in for a simple oil change and asked that if it could be done by 230 I'd get it done, it was 140 when I got there. I told him I would come back if they couldn't because I had to get back so someone could go get their kid from school. At 245 I asked if it would be much longer and I'm told just a bit longer and they're almost done. I'm told, by one of their employees, they ran out of the oil I needed and it shouldn't be much longer because the shop isn't too far away. At 310 my cars mysteriously done and no one came to drop oil off. So now I'm wondering what they put in my vehicle if it's not what was supposed to go in there. Also, same person up front who kept bsing me told me it's taking time because your oil light takes a bit longer to turn off. MY OIL LIGHT WAS NEVER ON!!! My experience with Fosters was terrible to say the least. First, after a six hour wait my car was given a false diagnosis in fact they generated the same information from my first visit. I say this not out of anger because I have been a repeated customer of this shop. However on this visit I not only had a false diagnosis but, they didn't replace me engine cover told me I had a blown head gasket, this turned out to be false! While waiting I witnessed another customer elderly customer whom stated that they were loan sharks. I discovered that Fosters had been robbed and perhaps this is the reason for their desperation for money. I warn all whom go to this location receive a second opinion. read more

This review is from an experience I had back in 2017 with a relative's pick-up truck. I brought Foster's my truck to have a routine service and tune-up done. Nothing fancy, just some overdue maintenance because I didn't know the service history of the truck very well. I called ahead of time and Allen said to bring it in and they would take care of it. When I arrived, I checked in with the lady at the front desk - an older lady that didn't know a lick about cars, but very sweet. I asked to speak with the mechanic I spoke with on the phone and Allen greeted me. I told him I need an oil change and a tune up - air filter, spark plugs, any belts or hoses if necessary. Al assured me it wouldn't be a problem and said he would have it done by the next day. I gave him and keys and left. After 4 phone calls and 2 and 1/2 days later, the truck was done being serviced. I went over immediately to pick up my truck. It turns out the bill was for the better part of $600. They did an oil change, spark plugs, a serpentine belt, air filter, and cleaned the throttle body (one thing I didn't ask for or needed). The truck ran perfectly fine before I even brought it in, so I don't why they needed to add extra services, other then maybe some extra labor. I was a bit upset at the bill, but I paid it and left. I lived just a few blocks from their shop, so I didn't notice any difference. However, that night when I used the truck to move some personal belongings, the engine started to overheat and started to smell of a sweet steam. I immediately pulled into a gas station and popped the hood. A kind passerby helped me figure out that there was NO COOLANT AT ALL inside the reservoir or the radiator!!! This was at 11 pm and no auto part store were open. I poured in a bottle a water and drove across town to an all night hardware store in order to pick up some 50/50 coolant to dump in the engine before it exploded on me. Luckily it was all highway and that kept the temperature down. I don't know why the hell my truck had no coolant, but it should not have happened. There was no reason my cooling system should have been touched. I don't know if they drained it in order to replace and forgot, or did it on purpose so I would bring it back for more service... Either way, it was incredibly unprofessional and I have not been back since. read more

I haven't brought my car to a mechanic for about 5 years after growing tired of shops and how i untrustworthy I felt they were. I decided to learn more about how to work on my own car and so far it has not only been enjoyable but saved me quite a bit of money. I don't have a shop I can rely on or trust and unfortunately after visiting Foster's, I still do not. Originally i brought my car in for an inspection and then asked to be quoted for some work I was thinking of doing myself but knew it would probably take me all day since I don't have all the specialty tools and equipment like a garage does. What I needed was specific and I was going to be providing my own parts. I was quoted $129 which after getting quotes from other shops that ranged from $150-175 was the best. I scheduled my appointment and was looking forward to saving my time and having this work done. I get a call about 2 hour later saying that they are looking at it now and that it is a harder job than they thought, he doesn't know who gave me that quote, and they can't do it for less than $270. Sorry, no deal, i don't expect to take my car in and then have the price more then double after the original estimate. I expected that a shop that has been around for over 50 years would be able to give a more accurate estimate. When I originally got the quote I explained exactly what I needed and that i would be providing my own part. The person at the front talked to a tech person, I even talked to the tech about it and that person agreed that $129 was a correct estimate. If they had just originally told me it would have been $270 then no harm no foul I would have moved on. They all were nice throughout the process and very well may do good work, I don't think they were being unscrupulous, but ultimately this experience was a waste of my time and I will not be going back. read more

This is my new "GO TO" place for anything automotive. Location is extremely convenient. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted (even with the mechanic on the phone). Older lady approach the front from the back office greeted me as she noticed the mechanic was busy on the phone. Friendly and customer service oriented which is VERY IMPORTANT. I brought in my vehicle for the annual state inspection, and was in and out within 30 minutes. Of course it may take longer depending on how many customers are in line. Just left Foster's after an impromptu stop and I'm super glad I went here! I was traveling through and my check engine light had come on and the car was shuddering, so I saw them on Yelp and called ahead. Got there and within five minutes (on a Friday afternoon!) they were working to diagnose the issue. Within an hour, I was leaving with a new coil and spark plug installed at a fair price. My transmission went out in my Jeep and I didn't know what to do. Luckily I found Fosters! They found me one right away and in less than a week it was ready. These guys are the real deal. A "mom & pop" family affair who care more about repeat business via honesty than just making a quick buck. It gets harder to find every year, so it's awesome when you come across a business like this. The son (Alan) is a straight shooter and knows his craft well. I was selling my car a few months ago and brought it down to the shop to have an oil leak sorted out. Took him almost no time to find out where is was coming from and even let me supply my own part. They gave me a ride home while waiting on the repair. When I took a cab back, they kinda got on my case like a parent would: "Why'd you spend your hard earned money on a cab? We would've picked you up." Yeah like I said...good people. I can do basic oil changes myself. Very friendly staff. Even game me a heads up about a future potential issue with AC unit. Even indicated what could be done but that it wasn't urgent. I had a lot of faith in fosters. I brought my car in for oil change after calling around for several quotes around the area and they gave me one of the lower prices. What ended up happening was that it was a little higher than what I was quoted on the phone after they ran some data through their computer. Since I was already there and wanted to get it over with, I obliged and told them to go for it. I was accompanied by the owner Mike who spoke to me the entire time about the history of the shop, his kids and how the area has grown to which I found very enjoyable and informative. Anyways my overall experience was good and after hearing about how long they've been there (50+ years), I was finally happy to find a mom and pop place close by to call them my automotive shop. Everything went south when my husband experienced issues with his car and took it into fosters. His car had a check engine light that needed to be looked at and he experienced times when the cars speed would be limited per gear (manual stick shift) and the check battery light would turn on and the car would lose power but the battery didn't need to be jumped. He called fosters on a Friday and asked if they could work on the car and they said they could if we brought the car in and charge a diagnostic fee of $75. After investigation then they'll give an estimate of what needs to be done. He brought in the car and they took a look at it which took them a few hours for an estimate. Fosters told him what they wanted to do with the car and said there was two things that was potentially wrong with the car. 2 options that were less and more expensive. They suggested to go with the less expensive route (ignition switch change which cost ~$220) which they hoped would solve the problem. After the repair was done, the problem still persisted. Since they're closed on the weekends, he drove to work on Monday and experienced a scary drive because his battery died. He called fosters again and they offered tow service but for a charge of $80 from the woodlands to their shop. It would have been exceeding customer expectations if the tow was complimentary because we relied on them to fix our issue on Friday and yet we were still experiencing problems. He declined because the car ended up starting and drove it back home. It was frustrating because we asked to reimburse the whole tow because why would we be experiencing issues still? Allan gave him this whole spiel about their strict tow policy and speech about how they don't know how we drove the car during the weekend, it's not their fault, and essentially pointing blame to us as customers that the reoccurring issue was caused by us. As a mom and pop shop, we really expected more with customer service instead we felt we were being scammed of our money and ripped off. Because our safety was in jeopardy of driving the car around especially long distances, my husband dropped the car off at fosters to be looked at again. They mentioned to him that if the reoccurrence of the issue was caused by them, they would reimburse. Upon investigating they came up with a second estimate which they found two issues with the car to address. One being crank shaft repositioning and throttle bottle replacement which was estimated to be $1000. My husband then asked to reimburse the ignition switch and Allan told him by fixing the ignition switch, it helped them to identify the two areas to be replaced/worked on which therefore fixing the ignition switch was needed for them to find the issues. This doesn't make any sense because you'd think if you fixed something, you'd run another diagnostic to make sure everything was running smoothly and ok. When my husband asked about the refund, Allan said to him "you're not the first one to come into our office crying about..." This is appalling because this comment was uncalled for and rude. We were fumed. How could a family owned shop who's been in business treat and talk to their customers this way? When my husband told me the story, I was shocked to hear this because my experience with my oil change was pleasant and I got a favorable impression from the owner through our convo that their shop could be trusted, loyal and honest. My husbands experience was quite the opposite. What they're good at is their sales tactics and pretty much luring you into spending more. We got several estimates and other mechanics to give us a second opinion before we acted because we lost credibility & trust in fosters. Since I work close to downtown, it was a lot safer being off highways to drive the car and it wasn't until several days where the car died again (power didn't work anymore) and we had to tow it to a nearby auto shop. We were quoted for $345 to replace the crank shaft and sensor. When we asked about the throttle bottle, the mechanic said it was unnecessary and expensive and that shops like fosters like to overcharge and rip you off. Our car now works. There really is not a better mechanic in Houston (or maybe anywhere). Foster's has done an incredible amount of work on my own car, my boyfriend's car, and several of my friends. From huge jobs (like replacing the clutch and flywheel in my Volkswagen Golf) to regular oil changes and inspections on my roommate's Mini Cooper and Mazda, Allan and Jimmy have always done incredible work and given us a great deal. These guys have even been able to make my boyfriend's sentimental favorite (1994 Bronco) run like it's only a few years old. The people at this shop are genuinely really good people and great mechanics. You can count on them for fair prices, thorough repair work, and even great conversation while you wait! read more

I enthusiastically recommend Foster's Automotive Service. They are a family-owned business that has been in the same place since the 50s - conveniently located in Eastwood, near Cullen Blvd. and Polk St. Everyone there knows their stuff; including the matriarch Mrs. Foster who told me that I was going to learn about my car because they explain everything thoroughly, letting you know exactly what is wrong and what needs to be done; or, what can maybe wait a little bit. Alan was always quick to call and give updates and estimates. Prices are fair - not in the crazy Montrose price-range. My car is running better than ever - and where I was going to sell it and get a new one, I think now I'll hang onto it a little longer and enjoy not having a note to pay. I will return to Foster's with all my car repair needs and I suggest that if you need a mechanic you definitely give them a try. read more

i ALSO can't agree with the first review, and frankly i think it was fabricated by the owner of the establishment. IT HAS TO BE. foster's automostive of houston helped me get an inspection sticker last year. they gave me some info about my NOC sensor and Oxygen sensor. they fixed it for $1200, gave me an inspection sticker, and i was on my way. 10 months later (now)... i came to renew my inspection. they told me the same thing they told me last year, as far as symptoms and what needed to be replaced. upon hearing this information, they said, "oh yeah... we already replaced all those things. we'll let's try something else this year. i told them, "what the hell did you do to my car last year? nothing? i have the EXACT same symptoms as last year, and the work done is STILL under warranty!!!" they told me that the work they did last year WAS under warranty, but it must be something else. then they charged me another $40 to do absolutely nothing! they make sure and collect the money before they tell you they can't give you an inspection unless you do a lot of unneccessary work first. read more

Im always hesitant about places that charge diagnostic fees because that's usually their way of taking your money without actually doing anything but I gave them the benefit of the doubt and got charged basically 200$ for nothing. 100$ "diagnostic fee" for them to tell me my car needs a 400$ decarb which is actually highly recommend to never do to your car unless its a last resort which my car is 5 yrs old with 60k miles... don't think its gunna fall apart tomorrow. I also explained my throttle body was JUST cleaned last week which they said "it wasn't done right" and proceeded to charge me another 100$ for something i can do myself in 5 min. Of course they don't tell you they are charging you for that until the end so whatever price they return with your gunna have to foot the bill. 200$ later my car is in just as bad of shape as it was when i went in. My usual rule is if someone is charging you a diagnostic fee they are afraid they wont find something to fix and want to charge you for something anyway, be aware. read more

Most important is pricing in parts and labor, which is more than agreeable, but also the little things, both expected and unforeseen.
