I had been curious about this auto shop for a while now because I live so close by so that's why I went. I came in and asked for my signal light to be replaced as well as my oil and filter changed. I was told it would be ready the next day since I came in around lunch time. I brought the supplies required but I brought the wrong bulb so they used their own which is fine. I just don't know in what world it is okay to charge 79$ for a signal light replacement EVEN IF they used their own light. I bought the wrong one but they're not selling bulbs for more than 10$ at the auto store. As for the oil and oil filter I do understand I have a diesel so I'm always charged more but 99$ feels like a lot especially since I brought my own things. Everyone I told about these prices said they said it was overpriced. I don't really know much about cars or what things cost in this area which is why I was asking all my friends but I'm not coming back because I feel like it was pretty pricey and this was with a 20$ discount from the mailer.. I'm kinda disappointed because I really wanted to support a small business but never mind. They did get the work done and were very nice so this is why I gave 4 stars. These guys saved my engine. I had some unusual noises after repairs. Chris suggested checking the water pump and discovered the timing belt was close to breaking. I had the both the water pump and timing belt replaced at a dealership just over a year ago and was shocked that the dealership had improperly installed the timing belt. Chris was professional and kept me in the loop via phone call/voicemail and text message. My vehicle was serviced in a reasonable 1-1.5 hours. For an synthetic oil change I paid 36% more than at a dealership and other shops. In the past, for my vehicle I paid between $55-$66 with taxes. I paid $90 here and that was WITH a coupon. Plus there was an additional 3 or 4% charge for using a credit card. All in all, I won't be able to make this my auto shop home bc of the price gap from other shops in the area. read more

My car broke down in on my way to Houston. I found The Auto Doc on line and chose it for the reviews and proximity to where I was staying. They were closed Saturday but I left a message. Chris called me back first thing Monday 7:30 a.m. He was helpful, communicative, and clear regarding my repairs and costs. They also did not charge me anything to store my vehicle a couple of days until I could drive back from Austin to Houston to pick my car up. I highly recommend their business. read more

Took my car in because it was making a mysterious sound and I wanted to see if they could figure out what it was. I figured it wasn't the sound system because it was off. I spent $40 for them to tell me that the car was safe to drive but they didn't know what was wrong with it. They even went as far to say that the sound would lead to a failure and that I would need to bring my car in eventually to get it fixed. I was given the option to bring my car in another day and pay $150 for them to look at it "in depth" and do a full diagnostic. The next day I decided to look at it myself after posting about my problem on a facebook page. I was able to find that the sound was coming from the rear right hand speaker. I found a tutorial online on how to remove the speaker and took it out. The issue isn't "fixed" but at least the car isn't making the sound anymore and it was only a speaker and not a failure that would cause the car not to drive. I am disappointed and shocked that a car shop would take my money and not even tell me what the issue was when it was as simple as wiring to a speaker and easily identifiable. Went in for 25,000 mile service, they tried to upsell me a decarbonization treatment for USD 395 they claimed was advised by Toyota every 8,000 miles (though not on any of the manuals) when picking up the car, and after payment by debit card I was forced to accept a mechanics lean on the car to get the keys back (not in case of non-payment, just every customer is required to accept a lean on the vehicle reagardless) read more

The day before Memorial Day weekend. The shop was swamped and closes at 5:30pm. He was able to squeeze me in to get my tire fixed that clearly has a nail in it from all the construction. As I waited in the waiting are for my tire to be repaired I over heard him talking to other customer via phone. His phone etiquette was amazing. He's verbalized exactly what the customer needed including a few suggestions. If you are in need of car repairs, go local. This place was recommended to me when I was in the middle of the city and all of a sudden my vehicle started overheating. I went to AutoZone to do some self-diagnoses on my vehicle, which I'm not that great at, but did anyway, and saw an AAA employees standing outside. I asked that employee what decent mechanic shop would he recommend and this is the place that he pointed me to. I really would love to give a bigger and better assessment of the place but I cannot. That is because the people took my vehicle right away and started working on it. I was given to thorough explanation once I was shuffled inside about what charges they were going to do: * The initial diagnosis is will cost a set amount. * If they need to do anything further than the initial inspection showed, then the price will reflect accordingly. * If the initial inspection showcase something minor that can be taken care of simply by that initial diagnosis, then no further charges will be applied. All I can really say is that they went to the vehicle, diagnosed the vehicle and got everything squared away much sooner than I expected. I need to come back to see if these guys are always this sufficient or if I just called them on an outstanding day. The paperwork states that they give you a warranty on their parts and labor for up to 24 months or 24000 miles, so rest slightly easy that the work has been done properly. Their street sign let you know that they were voted best mechanics in Houston by two separate entities, so they're just maybe something to their expedient and accurate service. I could go into detail about every single way that Auto Doc and their team have let me down but I'll just leave it at a 2 star review and my promise that you should find a different shop. 100% of the time I find that something was done half-assed. Missing body clips, bolts, loose battery, get a brake job and they give the car back squeaking with low brake fluid, replace shocks and other front end suspension parts and the car comes back still rattling over bumps. If something else is wrong they either don't know or completely failed to tell me about it. This kind of thing has happened too many times over the several years we've been letting them touch our vehicle and the time has come to cut them loose. This place epitomizes the old saying "We do work that is fast, good, and cheap; pick any two." I find them to be fast and good. If you're looking to save a buck, you should probably shop around a little, but when you want it done right, they do it right, they meet the deadlines they promise, and they stand behind their work. I had a repaired item fail nearly a year after they'd originally fixed it. It was under warranty, so they repaired it again, quickly and for free. Respect. Under all the cutesly old gas station signs, this is a a clean, friendly, well-run, and seemingly honest place to get your car repaired. Called 8:50am Auto Doc today on my way in to work, my brakes were screaming. I was told a service guy named Chris would be waiting for me,and he was 9:00am. He came out to see and told the back brakes needed to be replaced and walked me back up and made quick call for parts and gave me a fair quote 9:05. He offers to get me dropped off at work so I said perfect, and I rolled up yo work on time at 9:15 before my first appointment. I was called around 12:00 that my vehicle was done and ready for pick up. I couldn't get a way so they came by picked up one of the stylist/coworker checked her out and she brought my vehicle back within 10 min. Go see Auto Doc for the following 1. Outstanding Service 2. Very pricy. Felt like I was taken advantage of. Solid work. ------- Saturday: Car stops idling out of nowhere. Will start, albeit quite roughly when cold, just won't idle. Keeps stalling in all gears within seconds. I suspected I needed a new idle air control valve (turned out to be true). Sunday: Pushed the car out of the driveway to be towed over by AAA, left the keys overnight in the box with an additional note and a voicemail (2x communication) to run an A/C service and to check the starter because it took way too many cranks from a cold start. Got a call first thing on Monday morning. $109 for diagnostic tests. Mid Monday call: $537 for idle air control motor replacement including labor, says will fix starter problem. ~$60 AC diagnostic + $35 Freon. First price seem steep at face value. Chris says it likely won't be done til early Tuesday - no worries on my end there. Tuesday morning call: Found cracked upper radiator hose. "Causing coolant to leak and serious potential for car to overheat in the short term". I say OK. In my business I have to give my best honest assesment to clients. I can only hope that a professional place that's been around for a while like this would do the same. $190 including parts/labor. Seems steep for an accessible hose running $40ish + hose clamps. Grand total: $855. Down to $803 w/ AAA discount (10% off parts/labor up to a total of $50). I walk to my car with my keys & an $803 credit card charge. From a cold start, the engine takes too long to ignite. Went back in and asked the mgr about the start, said it's likely another fuel pressure valve. ------- Errors: - Didn't apply the cost of diagnostics to future parts/labor. This diagnostic price seems 30+% inflated. As with other shops, the cost of diagnostics should at least in part be applied to the work done. That computer has paid for itself several times over. - Markup seems steep or only premium parts are used. 120% retail markup, understandable - we all have to make a living and that's how it works. Beyond that (140% markup), $304 for the idle air control motor when comps average around $125 just seems steep. Options for non-premium parts (if those were the reason it was so pricy) on a vehicle w/ 137K on it should have be presented. Make me feel like you're trying to find a way save me money and I'll come back time after time. - All of a sudden on day 2 they notice the radiator hose? Other Yelp-er almost got taken advantage of for the same thing. (see Stef M's 1/11/2013 review here). In diagnostics, that should've been identified and brought to my attention on Day 1. This doesn't make me feel good at all. - I asked for a resolution to the cold start, they didn't do it while they had it, and then told me it should be fine once it's run once during the day. If they weren't clear what I had asked for, they should have said so. For this scope and price not to have included this requested work is upsetting. ------- Positive: - Professional demeanor and easily accessible. I feel like the services they provided were quality. I feel I could call 800 times (never did once, they always beat me to it) throughout the day to check on it and they'd be friendly and responsive. - Quick turnaround. Happy with the timeframe and willingness to work in a weekend tow first thing on Monday. That was a nice positive for me. ------- I'd be happy to hear how they'd like to resolve this. I'm extremely willing to change my negative experience to a very strong positive review and become a repeat customer (I did for my experience at Jiffy Lube on Shepherd). Right now I can't justify any more than 2 stars because I feel the negatives of price, not having the starter work done, and feeling eerily taken advantage of on the radiator given it was ID'ed on Day 2 outweigh their friendliness. I can have a client that likes me a lot personally but if I don't give him what he wants, charge him too much without solid justification or lower cost options, and adds things in that I really feel should've caught earlier on, I won't be getting his business again. I watched them bleed-dry a friend for years. However, a few years ago I needed something basic done... and I was willing to pay a premium for [reportedly] decent work. I paid a lot... and they failed to fix my vehicle... and after a few trips (each with more fees/work/etc), I said, "fine, just put it back together and let me pay my balance." I was not a jerk about it (I have that capacity... but "know better" than to do it). They didn't even bother to put everything back together! I was just too disgusted to deal with them any further. The thing that "tipped me off" was a massively over-priced part (they got really greedy -- it shouldn't cost a few hundred more than you can get it online). These are not good people. Was never told there would be a $60+ diagnosis when I set up the appointment by phone. I didn't receive anything by e-mail to this effect either. Decided not to have the car serviced here after receiving a quote for 1k to replace a headlight, signal light tails & socket. We found out about the $60 charge when my partner picked up the car. It turned into a "he said" "he said" type situation. Chris finally agreed to take down the price to $30, BUT LOW AND BEHOLD, WHEN WE TOOK IT TO FOSTER'S THE MECHANIC FOUND THAT AUTO DOC PULLED SEVERAL FUSES AND DID NOT REPLACE THEM. How shitty is that? The staff is personable and tries to be on a first name basis with customers. On my last visit, I needed to get a ride home instead of waiting in the shop. The blonde woman that works there (receptionist? partial owner?) road with me back to my place and then drove my car back to the shop herself. She was extremely friendly. Well my faithful Subaru final sprung a leak in the radiator. Fortunately, it never overheated, but fixing this is more than the simple change a hose kind of thing that I can do myself. I tried hard to find a good auto shop. Checked Yelp, AAA, a couple of other sites and decided on Auto Doc. Good points - they were cheerful, got the job done in 24 hrs, and it was done right the first time. Why only two stars - price. Yes, I had them change the hoses and do a cooling system flush when they changed the radiator, but seriously, the job came in of $1k. All itemized, but not really taking into account that changing a radiator implies disconnecting and reconnecting the radiator hoses so don't hit me once for separate labor charges for each hose as if you were doing a separate job. But, of course, my wheels had to be towed in, and I was not in a position to say, wait, I want drive over to another shop to get another estimate. read more

It is never fun to put your car into the shop. All you can hope for is that it be as painless as possible, and that is where The Auto Doc excelled. My Jeep died, and I had it towed here on a Saturday. They did not open until Monday, but they had convenient forms and a key drop box. First thing Monday morning they called me with an estimate of how much diagnostics would cost. A few hours later they called me with a repair estimate. They got the parts, and had the Jeep fixed by the end of the day. I couldn't ask for any better service. When I picked the car up they were friendly, and I was out the door in about five minutes. It was extremely painless. The actually have a Yelp check-in special for an oil change. I will definitely go back. read more

Yes, this place was expensive, but you know what? I don't care at all. I hate dealing with my car, so when the brakes decided to go out on my car 4 days before I was scheduled to move across the country, I was really worried that this would be a nightmare. I had visions of taking the car to a shop and having it linger while everyone ignored me and then having to leave the stupid broken car behind. I called Auto Doc at 8:30 in the morning and explained my problem. He said that if I got it in by 12:30 it would be done by close. I was doubtful, but took off work and dropped it off. Rather than having to sit in a sad mechanic 's office, I had the option to hang out in the coffee shop which is run by the wife of the owner of Auto Doc. It was adorable and made me feel like my money was going to a good family who was a part of the community. However, the owner was able to drop me off at home, which was even nicer. They called a couple times to explain the issues my car had and the costing. Since I was moving I had a pretty tight budget (moving is expensive...) and they helped me prioritize the repairs I could make at that time and took the time to write out a list of the other things I would need to fix after my move. As someone who hates cars, the time they took to dumb it down (they explained what it would sound like when the next things broke so I would know what was wrong) was appreciated and didn't come off condescending. They completed repairs by 3:30 in the afternoon and I was on my merry way. Overall, of course I wish it cost less, but honestly I feel this was money well spent. I usually go to the cheapest option and they never told me that my car was getting close to needing repairs (for example, no one ever told me my tires were bad or the brake pads were almost gone, even after paying them to look the car over). I will be sucking it up and laying out money for a place like this in the future. If I had gone to them in the first place I probably could have avoided costly repairs with some simple maintenance. Very surprised at the negative reviews. This is the friendliest, most honest car shop I have been to in Houston. Yes, agree, the prices could be better. But after getting horrible service at some other places, I realized that I would rather pay a little more to be treated respectfully by honest and professional staff. If you are solely looking for the cheapest car shop to do your work, this may not be the right place (but if you go, do ask if they will match a price elsewhere, see if they have any coupons, and don't forget your AAA card for the 10% discount). They recently opened a coffee shop/boutique next door, with cute seating, wi-fi, and real coffee drinks--they will even make you a custom drink while you wait for your car--that sure beats stale drip machine coffee that has been sitting on a burner all day. read more

These guys are thorough. After every oil change they give you a list of all the items that need to be replaced or fluids changed. They aren't pushy at all if you want to do these yourself. They can cost a bit more than some but you get what you pay for. I bought a new BMW and unfortunately ran over some large debris on the freeway. Chris jacked up my car and looked over the front end to make sure there was no hidden damage, free of charge. These guys are great! read more

Do not go here. Especially if you're a woman or seem unknowledgeable about cars because they will try to take advantage of you. I meant to write this review a few months ago when I came in but forgot to. Anyways, I brought my car in cause my tire pressure light was on and wanted to make sure my tires were fine. They told me it would be free to check it out. When they called me and told me to come back in they charged me about $100 to check it out? What???? Ok fine whatever I'll pay that. Then they tried to tell me I needed over $1500 of work done and showed me an itemized list of things. I told them thanks, I'll get a second opinion. On the way to another auto shop I noticed I had an ARMY of tiny spiders in my car, specifically crawling on my legs, passenger seat and steering wheel. They were all over and it took DAYS to get the bugs out from there and my car smelt like bug spray for weeks. I did not have spiders or whatever they were in my car beforehand. But That is not even where the problems end. I went to another auto shop and gave them the laundry list of work that auto doc said I needed to get done. The other place checked my car for free and told me there was absolutely nothing wrong with my car. NOTHING wrong not with the tires - not anything on that list, they said my tire pressure light was just going off cause of the weather. the other shop said they don't like bad talking other mechanics, but they had no idea why autodoc told me I needed 1500$ in work, other than to y'know, scam me. I was appalled and so glad I got a second opinion. I don't know why they have a "voted best by Houston chronicle" sign when they are genuinely the worst. Do not trust and if you do decide to go here, get a second opinion and maybe even a third! And make sure to bring buy spray. Ugh. read more
