As a totally amateur photographer walking in with two nice cameras (one inherited and one recommended by a friend), I was a little embarrassed to be asking very basic questions. Everyone was professional, warm, and so helpful without making me feel bad. I walked in and someone immediately asked how they could help, heard me out, and directed me to Manny. Manny patiently downloaded and updated the filmware for my Fujifilm body and lens, and explained the steps to me. He also took the time to wipe down the sensor with an alcohol wipe before coming to the conclusion that the lens would have to be sent into Fujifilm for repair ($25 for round-trip shipping, repair price TBD, about 2 weeks turnaround). He also let me know that my other lens is a little loose, and showed me a new one for comparison. If I sent both in for repair, it would still be $25 for both. He didn't press any services on me, but I asked about lens rental, and he told me that I could get a discount on the lens rental with my repair slip. Amazing! He also gently advised me to take a picture of my repair slip in case I lose it. Manny also patiently walked me through buying an affordable film (fuji 400 for $12) and loading it for me in my Leica/Minolta that I don't know how to use; a friend had loaded it for me last time incorrectly and I wanted to make sure it would be correct this time. They don't develop film here, but he gave me a card for a recommendation. While he was ringing me up for my film purchase, another employee slid me two green Foto Care sharpies. I know there are other camera stores in the city, but I'm totally sold on the excellent customer service; I felt very well taken care of, and I will definitely be back. read more

Foto Care is a boutique version of B&H or Adorama in the camera and photography supplies market. Jeff Hirsch at Foto Care, who has been the owner since 1990, is a difference maker for the business. I have not made any major purchases here but have benefited from the wisdom of Jeff whenever I had a question that I knew B&H or others would not take the time or know to answer thoughtfully. When you buy a flash cable (like I once did), Jeff would be happy to spend time with you to explain the benefits of TTL over Auto mode, or how to set your camera for the best flash exposure. I have also found him to be equally generous with his time on phone calls when fielding dumb questions from me on camera gear. I hope Foto Care does well and that it is here to stay. read more

Haven't really done enough business with them to really make the best and most accurate review but I'll give you the low down on FotoCare. FotoCare is one of the top 10 professional photo stores in the city and in the top dozen for rental houses as well. The fact that I added their business and am writing their first review really only means there really isn't any pro photographers on yelp. FotoCare has the largest Broncolor display and supply of rental equipment of any place in the city (one of the most in the world I'm sure). If you want to rent or take a look at the most professional (and most expensive) lighting equipment out there then go on down to FotoCare. From what I hear they also have fantasic support for digital backs. The store is a bit small and not the most organized and clean place you'll go to but that mainly comes from the fact that FotoCare's bread and butter is their rentals. I'll make sure to keep this review up to date if I have more experiences renting or buying equipment from them but for now we'll leave it at a respectable 4 stars. read more

Just found out about these guys this year and I'm so happy I did. Really friendly rentals department with good prices and very reasonable deposits. Haven't explored the shop much but they did have a lot of film stock that I wasn't able to find elsewhere (B&H and everywhere in LA is cleared out of Portra)... again I love B&H but their used film camera department is so picked through these days- Haven't bought a camera from Foto Care yet but they had a really good selection. I'm incredibly impressed with the service at Foto Care. I purchased a mirrorless camera (body and kit lens) and various accessories; I was assisted on the phone by Manny and in store by Jeff. As an amateur/enthusiast, this was a big purchase for me. I felt confident that I was offered appropriate accessories and there wasn't any pressure. They didn't just shove everything in a bag and send me on my way; Jeff set the camera up for me (he even applied the screen protector!) and walked me through the menus/settings. I dropped my camera (fell off of a loose strap). My heart raced and thought that my NYC trip was in a jeopardy. Turned out the filter did its (secondary) job and protected the glass. However, it was bent enough and I couldn't muscle it out of the lens. I searched around and found Foto Care. I called first and went in because it was the closest place that was opened earlier than others. I went in and was helped by Ronald. He was very helpful and was concerned for me when he saw my situation! He was able to get the filter removed (via the Rental store) and I was able to get a new filter to put on it. He was very friendly, VERY knowledgeable - everyone there seemed to be. We talked about other cameras, and his experience (plus showing some of his work), and some random stuff about how much he likes watches. It was a very awesome experience to be in there. If I need any thing done in NYC, I'll definitely stop by there again. Even if I want to buy something, I'll check them out first! I was there for less than an hour and there were 1 fashion photographer and 1 national geographic photographer doing their transactions there. I knew I made the right decision to go in there :) Ronald and Foto Care saved my photography part of my trip. If you need film on a Friday evening (which means both B&H and Adorama are closed) Foto Care is your place. I haven't tried their rental department yet, but the film department is well stocked with a wide range of 135 and 110/220 film (I suspect they also carry sheet film, but can't confirm). Strange experience with these guys. Took my DSLR in to get the sensor cleaned; the guys were nice but a little condescending. They had taken the camera and I was on my way out the door when they stopped us and said they needed the adapter to charge it. I ended up taking the camera back and leaving since I didn't have the adapter with me. Took it to Photo Tech after work one day and the guys there said they didn't need the charger/adapter to clean the sensor. I'm still perplexed. Maybe Foto Care just didn't want to do the job? Ask for Tommy he's FANTASTIC! I was in town for a wedding and my husband had forgot to pack my charger for our Canon SLR. Men. What can I say? It was 2 pm on a Friday and B & H was closed . . .I posted a frantic request on FB. . . I desperately called around trying to get prices for chargers ($70!?!? for something that I only needed for a few hours seemed ridiculous). One of the shops I called gave me the number to Foto Care. In steps Tommy to save the day. He gives me the prices and after I explain the situation he tells me that if I have time that I can just swing by and drop off the battery and he'll charge it for me. The people here are kind and knowledgeable. Called in an hour before closing to see if it was possible to get a last minute sensor cleaning. They couldn't guarantee it, but told me to bring my camera in anyways. Brought my camera in and well, the rest is history. They were able to clean my Panasonic G7 within 45min for a reasonable price. Most camera stores I looked up either close early or didn't offer sensor cleaning at all which was somewhat sad. Glad to come across Foto Care, will be coming back here for any other services. You have several options in town to buy or rent your photo gear but Fotocare is heads above the competitors in customer service. They greet me by name when I walk in despite not being a frequent customer. If you need last minute rental gear, they can do it (the competitors often can't accommodate late requests). If you call, a human answers the phone. They've had the same employees for as long as I can remember. The owner is hands on and you'll frequently see him on the floor helping customers. Very delighted about the quality of service and the politeness of the staff. I am a portrait and wedding photographer in Paris, France and traveled to New York for an event. It is particularly difficult to rent photography gear as a foreigner and was highly disappointed by the 2 other big rental stores in the area as they were asking for credit card statement and other papers that I simply didn't had on me being a tourist. I'm generally impressed with Foto Care. I usually shop at Adorama because they've always treated me like solid gold, but I head to Foto Care if I need something on a Saturday or late-afternoon Friday. Foto Care has a really great film selection, and a pretty decent used-camera inventory - lots of cool Fuji medium-format cameras and the like. The staff is also very courteous and knowledgable, with none of the jerkiness that sometimes comes with pro-camera shop workers. Today, Friday, September 25, 2020, at 4:00 pm I realized that I needed to buy a large roll of photo background paper for a self-taping audition which my agent had gotten for me. All of the stores I found on-line were closed for special holidays. However, I was very, very fortunate to have discovered Foto Care Rentals at 43 W. 22nd St. which was scheduled to close at 5:00 pm and called the store. A gentleman named Brian answered the phone. I told him what I thought I needed and he helped me determine the width and confirmed that the store had the color in the width I needed in stock. I raced there from the Upper West Side on the subway. The area of town is a little confusing for me and so I called the store when I exited the subway and got specific instructions how to get there. I arrived at 5:05 and, Yaaaay, Brian was there with the roll ready for me and answered further questions that I had. By the time I left with my purchase, it was at least 5:20 pm, if not later. So, I give Brian 5 STARS any my thanks for his helpful knowledge, patience and polite help. I also give 5 STARS to the manager who allowed Brian to stay and help me in my time of need. read more

Phenomenal. I walked in one day, not ready to make a purchase, but with a need to learn the Profoto pack and head system before a shoot that evening. Bob took me around to the section of the store with Profoto gear and showed me literally everything about it, from accessory mounting to power control. All the top of the line brands and they even carry things like iPads. 2 steps above an Adorama. These guys are the best. I often go in here when I have a question or need help with something. They are so helpful and kind! The atmosphere is relaxed unlike other big photo centers.... I went there to get my Sony's sensor cleaned and Ron was super helpful, even spending about thirty minutes with to help me with the issue I was having. Caveat emptor. Fotocare has cutthroat salesmen. Maybe great rental dept, maybe even great repair technicians. But they took a huge amount of money from me and flushed it down the toilet when I purchased a used Hasselblad HD system from them. I spent literally weeks on the phone with Don, one of their top salesmen, and traveled by train hundreds of miles to purchase a very expensive camera system. Turns out, I was swindled by Don and a photographer friend of his that owned the system I purchased through Fotocare. It was only a few weeks after I bought that camera that it was clear the system was not what I needed to transition my business. The lens was far too long. The camera body was too bulky. I tried for MONTHS to contact Don to get his help to resell the USED system he pawned off on me. Guess what? He never returned any of my phone calls. Zero. zilch. If it had been an honest transaction he would have talked to me. I even had his personal cell phone number. Lesson learned: Do your research, trust no one. And especially not the folks at Fotocare. I hope Don and his buddy enjoyed splitting his commission. read more

Went in today to buy ink for my 3800. Wasn't entirely paying attention to the price, as I was in a hurry. Got home to realize they charge almost 15 dollars MORE for the exact same ink that Adorama and B&H charge. Me: Hi, I was wondering if you guys match prices with Adorama or B&H for inks. FotoCare (with attitude right from the start) Sir, we're a "service oriented" store, not a bulk quantity wholesale store" Me: Okay, just seems odd that you are charging so much more... I love how he implied that Adorama and B&H are not "service oriented". I know the guys at both stores and they are all service oriented. How much "service" exactly is required to sell me a few ink cartridges ? What FotoCare cares about is hiking up prices and taking your money. The store is no different than any other camera store in NYC. They do all the same things, so I'm not sure why they charge so much. Maybe it's because the staff themselves never made it as pro photographers and they are getting back at those of us who have. On average they charge 10-15% more on every single item - that makes no sense. They don't offer any more service other than the fact that they are open during the Jewish holidays. I'm surprised more people haven't complained about this. 3 inks at FotoCare would have cost me about $200 and at Adorama for the very same inks, barely $150... $63 per at FotoCare $48 per at Adorama That's straight up price gouging.
