THE GOATS. Had a jam on my Nikon FA. Took it all over town. Nippon told me to "throw it out because it needed lubrication" Phototech said they had some union repair guy but he retired. K&M needed to "send it to Maryland" or some shit. The guys at Camera Doctor picked it up messed around with it for 3 minutes, figured out the issue and gave me a clear diagnosis as a real doctor would. When you see several reviews that warn you about a business, it is best to take heed. I learnt that lesson one more time the hard way. In summary: avoid Camera Doctor at all cost. I brought a carbon fiber tripod with a leg that was loose and won't stay on. They inspected it, clearly saw the leg come off, and quoted $45 + tax to fix it. I left the tripod with them and they called me in a few hours to say it was fixed. I picked up the tripod the next day trusting they repaired it as they claimed, but when I get home and took the tripod out of its case, I noticed that they hadn't fixed the problem at all! The leg came off just like it did before they "fixed" it. The following day I called them and they asked me to bring the tripod in. They are a good 30 minutes from where I live, but fine--I will go since I didn't have a choice. One of the guys (the only polite one) said I would have to leave the tripod for a while and he would let me know after the other technician comes in and takes a look. I called back in an hour since I was still in the area. The owner picked up, said they misunderstood what needed fixing (sic) and now think a part needs to be ordered. I said I would prefer to just pick up the tripod. And he offered to refund me. So on my fourth visit to them, when I picked up the tripod, the owner claimed I was rude to him on the phone (what?!) and accused me of not defining the problem accurately. Hmm ... the tripod leg comes off and you saw that the first time I brought it--what else do you need to know? On top of wasting hours of my time, he was now needling me to have an argument--very unnecessary. Here is some feedback. Keep your seemingly well-known attitude in check when you clearly botched it. And pay more attention to checking if you performed the services you are charging good money for. The owner was yelling at me crazily and he said he would find me if I give a bad google review. He also humiliated me with words and pointed his fingers at me repetitively. The whole time I didn't say anything unrespectful but he kept attacking me personally and tried hard to show his power. The experience was just depressing. I was charged $48 for taking off a lens filter that could actually be scrolled off easily. When I questioned their diagnose after learned that fact from my friend, he wouldn't return my unfixed lens and the above things happened. I rather pay $100 for not going through these again. Camera Doctor and it's proprietor, Joseph are the very establishment that is the poster child of RIP OFF ESTABLISHMENTS!!! There are also the case & point on why every person considering choosing a repair shop throughly research Yelp before considering- I wish I did because I would have found out that I am not alone in my dissatisfaction with the company. Basically on Dec 10 , I brought in a Canon 100-400 lens to be cleaned Joseph gave me an estimate of $125-$150 which I thought was reasonable. Right B4 Christmas they called and inflated the estimate to $550 which I declined. When I went to pick up the lens they refused to give it to me demanding I fork lover a $55 "service charge" which I had never agreed to. Joseph refused to return my lens which I needed for a news job. It turned out they didn't have it - it was somewhere in New Jersey. It wasn't until January 6 when the lens was at the shop but they still tried to extort me for $55. I called the police but they said it was "a civil matter" and therefore I was forced to buy a new lens because the court date won't be until mid October 2023. I'm also filing a complaint with the Ny Attorney General's office as well as the Better Business Bure and the FTC for Deceptive Practices which are actionable under NYS Consumer Law S349. NOTE: By contrast Nippon and Chrysler Camera charge $5- $10 if they charge at all. Neither Canon, Nikon , Sony or any other camera manufacturer charge any service charges. Doctor Rip-off. They quoted me 400-500 for my lens repair and $35 for estimate. Ended up charging me $48.99 estimate refusal fee because I demanded my lens back. Have you ever heard of estimate refusal fee? My lens were there literally overnight. Refuse their service and take your gear elsewhere! I ended up sending my gear directly to Canon, they gave me an estimate online based only on two pictures and charged me $350 for the repair including shipping both ways. read more

Stay away from this dreadful "business". The shop is completely non-responsive : they don't consistently return phone calls or e-mails. I actually had to pester them to receive an update on my repair estimate. The repair estimate finally came back at a whopping surcharge with little to no detailed repair summary (like a detailed listing of parts - right?) + had to wait another week for them to put it "back together again". I suspect I got my items back in even worse shape (dirty lenses with additional body scratches). They are great at quickly charging your credit card for an exorbitantly priced estimate - so beware - I still kick myself for trusting these guys. The only place in the US I have repair my film cameras. I have been using Camera Doctor since 2015 and have had only positive results.

I had two repairs with Frank over the years - a compur 2 shutter (he fixed it, it broke immediately, he refixed it under warranty) and a Hasselblad e12 back (he repaired it badly, fixing nothing, but I didn't discover this until after a month has passed). Fine. This I can let slide. But I mentioned these things on a Facebook group and he called me and left me an intimidating voicemail not one hour afterwards. Do not use the camera doctor unless you want to be harassed. read more

Was more than triple what they estimated in the shop. took more than two weeks to get an estimate. 50% more to fix than phototech. Tried to get it back before the estimate (as it was taking forever- I think they forgot about it?), but we couldn't retrieve our lens. They really want that $55 they charge for an estimate! Photo tech charges $15 for an estimate, takes a couple of days for an estimate and the repair was 50% less!! Check that 50% less for the same repair! These guys are scam artists be very careful. They'll steal your camera and pretend the camera in store doesn't record for more than a few days. By doing this they get to not show any of the footage inside of them working together to steal your product from inside. They claim to only give out cameras with a receipt but that's not true. They gave my camera away to someone else who didn't even look like me at all nor did he have the receipt. They showed me one clip of the guy entering from outside but Frank, Joel and Matt are all scam artists. I'm not the only person in the past who has had a terrible experience with this company. These guys used the excuse that this person knew everything wrong with my camera. Imagine how that could happen? They would either tell him what was wrong. After them giving my camera away they offered to replace it but told me I would have to wait because this camera doesn't come by the shop often... now why would they say tHat? Does that mean they're gonna steal someone else's camera to give to me? Is that what they did with my camera perhaps? These guys are scammers please be careful. read more

I went twice with two different cameras found in my late father's things. The first time it was a cheap little film point and shoot and they were helpful and prompt looking at the camera right then and there. The second time I left the more sophisticated 35mm film camera and didn't hear from them for two weeks until I called and when I picked it up there was just a note on the statement that it wasn't worth getting fixed with zero explanation as to what was wrong with it. First, that's not what I asked. I wanted an estimate of cost. I mean, it's a 30-year old film camera of no real note. The only reason I'd be getting it fixed is out of sentimentality, not financial practicality. Film itself is impractical in this day and age, so clearly NO ONE is doing it to save money. That they don't understand this is a massive read flag. So even though their shop is very convenient to me, I will not be going again. I found someone online in Tennessee who did in fact repair the camera for $130 and it was worth it even if I had to pay to have it shipped back and forth because again, it wasn't about practicality. Worst experience. I brought in my camera in the middle of August 2017 and I just got my camera back here July 18th 2018. My Pentax 6x7 camera needed to get the wheel that enhanced the film renewed, I understand its an old camera and parts will break. I brought in to Camera doctor which I had gotten recommended by another camera place.The guy was nice to explain what was going on with my camera. I was relieved that it was fixable, they said it would take 2-3 weeks. 4 weeks later I called to get an update on camera the lady on the phone sounded young and unexperienced, she eventually puts on another guy on the phone who explains to me they still haven't found the parts to my camera but he doesn't know when but I should give him 3-4more weeks, he then gives me an estimated price which is 400$ and I say thats its okay and I will wait for an update. I keep waiting and waiting. Every-time I think of the Pentax that I turned into Camera doctor months ago I get stressed out cause had been such a hassle just to updates on the camera. Through out the process they never one time followed up on my Pentax camera. June 20th 2018 I decide to back to get my camera even tho they never got to fixing it. When I get back in and ask for my camera, I give him my ticket and at first he can't find my camera but eventually he finds it in the piles of camera that lays unorganized around the basement office. I says that I just want it back and that I have been almost waiting 1 year for getting them to find the part that needed to be fixed. he explains that they haven't been able to find the parts but that if I give the 3 more week it will be fixed. I give them one more chance to find the parts. 4 weeks later I get a called that I can pick up my camera. I asks over the phone if I can get some compensation since it almost took 1 year to fix, he says that they will give me a student discount (10%) although I am 4th year student. technically he is not giving me a discount to compensate for the time it took, but a discount any student would have gotten. I ask again if I can get compensation for the time, but they says that I should have followed up, which I had but never gotten a fully reply from and then they said it was because of the miscommunication like if it's my fault. They never called besides the one they wanted my credit card information when the camera was done. I payed the 420$ because I just wanted leave and get my camera far away from there. I will never go back there and wouldn't recommend anyone else to do either! It has been a nightmare to go fourth and back with them. if anything try Nippon that also fixed old film camera, but the service is faster and more professional read more

DO NOT GO HERE I brought my Canon DSLR to Camera Doctor because I was having a minor issue with the sensor, and because I wanted them to look into some stuck pixels. It took them a month to even look at my camera, and they failed to do a full evaluation. The price they then quoted me to repair the sensor was the cost of a used Canon camera body if I picked one up in excellent condition from Adorama. When I declined their repair service, I then had to wait another 3 weeks before my camera was ready to be picked up. This after calling numerous times, each call met with an apology, an empty promise to call me back, and a lie about my camera's whereabouts. Apparently they sent my camera elsewhere for repair, and lost track of it. When I asked them to waive the $60 fee for my inconvenience, they declined. So, in the end, I paid $60 to wait seven weeks, after a dozen frustrating phone calls, to get back a camera they did not service. read more

I had an unpleasant experience here with a Canon AE-1. There was a lot of surly back-and-forthing, which would be kind of boring to describe. The upshot was that they were ultimately unable to fix something that they said they would be able to fix (a light meter) and they later informed me that it would be impossible for me to get my camera fixed anywhere. I found this hard to believe, and after some internet sleuthing, I sent my camera off to Camera Clinic in Mandan, North Dakota. The light meter is working fine now. In future, I'll be avoiding this place and sending my camera off to North Dakota. Even if it winds up taking longer, the professionalism and customer service is worth waiting for. read more

Came in for a broken light meter, the woman took one look and told me it wasn't broken, and I had to explain to her how a light meter works and prove to her that it was, in fact, broken. When they called (only after I called them twice 2.5 weeks later) with an estimate she said it was going to cost $100 for them to fix the light leak (which I specifically didn't ask for, my tape does perfectly well) and that the light meter couldn't be fixed. The two men that work here actually spoke to me nicely. However, the woman at the front is really rude. She has an attitude that is just unnecessary, even when opening the door for me, she made a comment that was snarky. When addressing my camera concerns, she spoke to me condescendingly, and eventually couldn't even help me and had to ask one of the others to address the issue with me. When I asked her questions about how long it takes to repair, details about the issues that I came in with from last time I visited, she yet again was condescending and spoke to me as if I was supposed to know every answer and was stupid to even ask. I recently visited the Camera Doctor in NYC for the second time and wanted to be sure to leave a good review. They were friendly, patient and knowledgeable. Both occasions on which I visited, I had major problems with older equipment. They examined the camera bodies and the lenses very carefully, told me what they were finding and what my options were in very clear terms. It turned out both times, that the equipment was beyond fixing - it would have been a waste of money, they told me. I asked a number of other questions about parts, etc., and they ended up spending about 20 minutes answering everything I asked about with no pressure to hurry and leave, even though I wouldn't be bringing them any business. I found it to be a pleasurable and informative visit and I will definitely return if I have any issues with any of my equipment in the future. read more

These folks are the best. I went there to see about a zoom lens I have that was showing signs of age. I was greatly impressed with the treatment I received. Nothing was rushed, the explanations were easy to understand, and the people were friendly and knowledgeable. What was amazing was that they, in effect, turned away my business. They said that sure, they could do the work and fix the lens (zoom system was worn out) but it didn't really make sense for me to spend that money when it would only need future repairs that would cost more. So I'm only giving 1 star bc apparently you have to! I brought my nikomat film camera in for a CLA (clean,lube,adjust). The gent that helped me was very responsive and personable. He asked me if there were any known issues, to which I responded none that I know of. The camera was working fine to my knowledge but I was open to the idea that it may need some extra help. All good. See ya in a few weeks! So a few weeks rolls by and nothing. I called and spoke to a different guy who tells me that there was a (somewhat) major problem with the camera. Technical jargon aside, the connection between the lens and the body needs to be repaired. The camera CANNOT work correctly without this. I was offered a replacement camera bc they didn't have the parts to repair it. I declined the offer for sentimental reasons. He said they could source the parts and let me know the price. Long story short I decided against the whole thing and picked up the camera. When I got it, I understood the issue the 2nd guy was talking about. It was the meter coupling tab that connected to the corresponding "rabbit ears" on the lens. Simply put it... didn't move, so could not connect to the lens. However, THIS WAS NOT THE CONDITION THE CAMERA WAS IN WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN. When I alerted them to this and asked them to fix it to the point of the original condition, they complied. They did however decline on the CLA or any other work. To sum it up. They tried to pump me for money. I caught the error and they decided to just get me out the door. Bad business guys!
