Great place for brunch, delicious food! I went with the Garden Scramble as my main meal, and shared the Bananas Foster Monkey Bread with a friend. So good. I was very excited to go there for dinner with Emily K., Calli C., Erick H., Peter F. and a couple of other lovely folks before heading next door to the Burren for two birthday celebrations. Immediately upon entering, I was stunned by how similar this place is and feels when contrasted to the Eastern Standard. It's very similar although not as upscale and formal. It is also less dark in there, and more compact. I had seen mixed things about the place on Yelp and looked forward to my experience there - especially since Davis Square needed a place like this. There was no craft beer place in Davis really and the market was pretty much wide open for an establishment of the sorts. Sure, Red Bones has a ton of beers, but nothing like this. And they don't have any craft cocktails like Sazeracs and other beautiful cocktails of the sort. Their beer selection is obviously pretty damn solid as well. They have all kinds of bottled and drafted beers. The hostess handed us some menus to peruse and vanished while our waitress arrived and hooked us up with the typical glasses of water and bread basket with butter. The layout of the menu immediately reminded me of the menus at Eastern Standard and Gaslight. Same kind of format and layout, with a few similarities. The cuisine offered at the Foundry definitely isn't as high end but they do have some pretty unique dishes such as the Spaetzle, a traditional German/Swiss egg noodle-like pasta. their menu is all over the place though, they have traditional French dishes such as the classic steak frites to Louisiana-inspired shrimp ettouffee. They also have Italian dishes. It's very hard to pinpoint the style of the establishment; they really don't seem to be headed in any direction. Unfortunately for me, they did not have roasted bone marrow; I was a bit disappointed by that but settled for some pork belly as an appetizer. It came confy-ed and served with some pickled grapes, arugula and some frisee. I love pork belly but this was a bit disappointed. It was moist but lacked a good, crisp bite to it. It was very bland and should have been broiled a bit more. The portion size was decent though, although the plate they used made the portion look tiny. Then I decided to test their cooking skills with the Spaetzle, especially since I lived in Switzerland for two years as a kid and have eaten that dish for as long as I can remember. Moments later, once the dish was in front of me, I froze in confusion. It didn't look like Spaetzle at all. Usually they long, not all chopped up. It was as though they were trying to mask something. The components of the dish tasted pretty good though, the ham, mushrooms and cheese complemented one another pretty well but the dish was fairly dry. And I don't believe that it was spaetzle. It might have been something similar but the shape, size and texture was off. On the upside my Sazerac cocktail was pretty damn good. Overall the ambiance is great but I had higher expectations for this place. Their location is amazing, right in the heart of Davis but I feel like their food falls short. Unless they improve it, I'll be making this one of my watering holes instead. The prices are fair and the service pretty good. Be warned though, the place is crowded. I know it opened recently but there's been a line every single night or just about since they opened, with a waiting time often exceeding an hour. read more

There is something about Foundry on Elm that is so utterly forgettable to me...I like the decor, the food is good, the beer list is extensive...something just doesn't click. The service is good, but the kitchen is slowwww. I find it hard to believe that it really takes 25 minutes to cook a medium rare burger when there are maybe 20 people in the entire place. Glad we got to come and try out this place! This place looks pretty nice right off the bat. Seems like a bar/dinner kind of places but more upscale to it. I got their signature burger for $15. I didn't have high expectation for this burger, treating it like any other burger. I was Wrong. This burger was one of the most juiciest burgers i've had in a while. The thing i look for in a burger is how tender and juicy the meat is, and this burger hit spot on! The thing that made this burger also stand out is the unique sauces which included what i believe is some special mustard and a little bit of wasbi? Im not typically a guy to get mustard on anything but for some particular reason, i allowed the mustard to stay on! I've been back to the Foundry several times for dinner and once for lunch since my brunch there. I have not yet been disappointed by the entrees or service. This past Sunday, my boyfriend and I had dinner there. I had the chicken with chourizo-cranberry stuffing and garlic roasted brussel sprouts. Though the brussel sprouts were undercooked (I do like my veggies al dente, but this was taking the mickey), they were tasty and everything else on the plate more than made up for it. The bacon wrapped dates we had for a starter were fab. Would definitely recommend. The drinks menu still seems overpriced, as do the apps. The burger and the entrees are comparable to the area, though. The atmosphere as always is welcoming - you feel like you're in a place where you can talk to the people sitting next to you, or have a large group of chatty friends there without disrupting anyone else. Continuously the best place to go to during brunch, and the one place I bring people to when they aren't familiar with non-Boston or Southie brunch options. They've got an amazing oyster selection, and their drinks are phenomenal. They've got knowledgable bar staff and even better waitstaff. This place is so spacious-looking during the day! Or maybe they got better lighting. Last time I was here was 4 years ago and I just remember it being dark. Came here around 6PM Sunday for dinner. Not very busy at that time but things picked up later at night. Had a cider for a drink but they have a pretty hefty beer and scotch list. I think they're tied to Saloon so they have access to all that whiskey shared between establishments. Had two appetizers to split--the bacon wrapped dates and the poutine. The bacon wrapped dates were delicious!! Wish it came with more b/c there were only 4 and I'm a fatass. The poutine was salty from the gravy but I really liked the cheese curds. For my entree I had the porterhouse pork chop which was a pretty hefty chop that came with potatoes, bacon pieces, and fried leeks. The leeks were more decorative than anything else. The bacon and potatoes were soooo good. The pork chop + potatoes made it a pretty heavy dish but it was quite tasty. My date had something off the specials--a steak dinner that was more steak tip than anything else that came with asparagus and potatoes. Overall it was good food, good drinks, and good company. I wish this place was open when I went to Tufts over a decade ago! The menu is constantly changing so be prepared to try something new when you go!! Every time I go, I get the cheese plate because the cheese changes often and comes from different local farms and they are delicious. Make sure you ask for extra bread before your plate comes because you will run out! The other thing I absolutely love about this place is their drink menu! They feature local beers and ciders so you get to try drinks brewed nearby and that's important! I was able to try the Downeast Cranberry Cider and it was amazing, not sure I would have known about this amazing beverage without it being on their menu! Now on this occasion when I went to eat, they had grilled cheese and tomato soup and it was amazing!! The sandwich was a blend of Gouda, cheddar, mozzarella and then it was drizzled with smoked honey!!! I went there for a birthday party this past winter of about 20-25 people and they had excellent service! We called that same day for reservations on a Sat. night and they had a huge table organized. Attention, Pumpkinheads! Right now Foundry has a section of it's draught beer menu just of pumpkin beers. That fact alone is enough to have me come here every night of fall. If you need more of a reason than autumnal alcoholic heaven, the atmosphere is just the right amount of class and casual. The interior is dimly lit by antique-looking fixtures, and the red seating pops against the otherwise black, white, and gray decor. On nice nights, they open the front windows out to the world (well, the world of Elm street), and there is seating right at the window. I've always wanted to sit there, but space is very limited (only 3-4 chairs at each of the 2 windows) and seem to always be taken. Bummer. However, there is a long bar table which runs the length of the space, and it's typically easier to grab a spot there. If you're looking for some grub to accompany your beverage, the fare, leaning toward French-nouveau, is pretty darn tasty. I've especially enjoyed the mussels and some of their soups du jour. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. When it's not fall (and therefore I don't know exactly what kind of beer I want), they have always been quick to recommend and give samples. In this fashion, I fell in love with the Lexington Bourbon Barrel Ale, which is a strong brew with hints of vanilla and whiskey. You need this stuff in your life. The French gnocchi was excellent, perfectly cut into bite sized pieces, nicely seared on the outside, and pretty much melted in my mouth. At first taste it was a bit bland until I got to the mushrooms! Omg those mushrooms was where all the taste was at and complimented the gnocchi so perfectly. It made the whole thing extremely addictive. The dish was not heavy but so tasty and satisfying that I didn't even realize it was a vegetarian dish until I finished it. :). This was one of the poorest customer service/waiting experiences I have ever had. I was with 3 other friends and we all had one drink and a sandwich/burger. It took us almost 30 minutes to receive said ordered drinks. Our meal arrived almost the same time as the drinks. The food is good. Not fabulous, but good. I enjoyed the burger. Then it got worse. We went to pay and our VERY frantic waitress disappeared for quite a while. I then saw her with her cellphone light out looking all over the restaurant, under tables. I approached her because we had been waiting for the credit card for 15 minutes and she admitted she lost the card. It took another 10 minutes to sort out that she switched cards and charged us with another table's meal. She apologized, barely, but was very confusing in her explanation of the charges and we had to ask to speak to the manager. The general manager, Lynn, was incredibly unapologetic and rude. In fact, all she had to offer was that they were short staffed. There are plenty better restaurants to go to. I recommend The RoseBud. read more

On my most recent trip I was able to grab a seat at the bar and order a few cocktails while enjoying their tomato soup and grilled cheese combo. I have been here more than enough times to say that I love it! I typically get their flatbreads and they are so good. This time I thought I would try something new: Harvest Salad- It's not what you think, well maybe if you read the ingredients but its not a salad with lettuce. It's a sweet potato with and bunch of yummy stuff inside (obv I can't even remember). Just give it a try. I added a side of brussel sprouts because for some reason I am OBSESSED with them. Based on a friend's recommendation for good food & atmosphere, I was excited to take my out-of-town guest to lunch at Foundry. However, the hostess made my friend feel unwanted immediately due to inappropriate assumptions made about keeping hair out of the buffet, instead of just asking questions. You see, my friend has a visual impairment and has a trained guide dog. According to ADA, service animals are allowed to enter public establishments with their handler, including those with self-service food lines. The hostess told us it was a buffet brunch and said that my friend would have to keep the hair out of the food. She did not welcome us into the restaurant as she starred at the dog. She did not tell us there were other menu items besides the buffet. She did not ask my friend any questions about needs or procedures of a service animal such as: Where does the dog sit during your meal? or If you choose the buffet, will you need assistance getting your plate? Or even simply, I'm not familiar with service animals, will you need any assistance from us while you dine? Although highly unlikely, perhaps the hostess asks every person to keep their hair out of the buffet? I hope you will consider providing education for your employees so that future customers with and without disabilities are treated with respect and made to feel equally welcomed. Higher alcohol content doesn't mean you should give me less of it. These things are $7 and remind me of a caramel candy apple. In both the aroma and taste. this place looks so snazzy you won't believe it was the old Bowl and Board. It looks like a whole different building. I came here for a birthday brunch and ordered the crab eggs benedict and it was perfect. All of the flavors were just right. They serve a little bowl of homemade breads with your coffee that are delicious. It's great to have somewhere in the Square that is a little fancy but not too pricy...a great place to bring relatives and friends. The service was very friendly. My housemate has been a few times for dinner and loves the Spaetzle. --I came back again for brunch, and the eggs benedict was served on a cold, barely toasted English muffin. Poutine, wha--? Another American place trying to re-create this Canadian classic? Lemme grab my fork, Mountie hat and maple leaf, and I'll be there in a Canadian minute to give it the kiss of victory--or the kiss of death! Final verdict around the table: It's decent. Better than the tasteless mush they tried to pass off as poutine at The Gallows. But cheese curds it ain't. Melted cheese, yes. Curdles of cheese, no. So if you can live with that on your conscience, this is pretty good poutine. Other stuff: not so good. Spaetzle was the best dish after the poutine, Pork Belly app was appropriately tasty if not somewhat boring, Shrimp Etouffee was horrifyingly bland with badly-fried okra and Scallops weren't tender enough. My Moscow e Habana cocktail was lovely, though, and my friend's (the bourbon one, second on the list, I think) was ridiculously strong even for bourbon, so if you're budgeting your drunkenness, go for that. Friendly waiter, but often MIA and did not bring us bread at all (we had to flag another waitress for that). I understand they were so ridiculously overcrowded, though, so hopefully they'll streamline their ability to handle that in the near future. We had a table at the back and it was fun seeing the kitchen at work, though there was one line cook (I think) who liked to shout unintelligible orders in a bizarre train conductor kind of way. Gorgeous interior of rich, dark tones and a long, beautiful bar that I hope to one day have in my own McMansion. I think, once they work their starting-out kinks out, this will be a nice bistro-type place to dine in, but I think I'll wait until then before revisiting. read more

We were seated in high top booth in the corner of the front windows where we could people watch. We watch a band come marching down in their polka dot gear playing a variety of instruments. ( I looked it up later and it was the "School of Honk" where they parade the streets of Davis Square every Sunday between 3-5 PM, playing "loud lively music for fun and inspiration." A few of the girls were already imbibing on white wine spritzers garnished with cute orange peel. The husband went with an Oban scotch and I wanted to be fancy with the copper cup so I ordered the "House Mule". The mule was very good. After the house mule, I moved on to the "On Fleek" which had St. Germain elder flower liqueur, grape fruit juice, mint, tequila and lime. It was a bit too overwhelming for me but I drank it anyway. After a couple of round of drinks, people were getting hungry. We ordered a few of shareable appetizers. Everything was really good! Service was a bit choppy because they were switching shifts from brunch/lunch to dinner and the food and drinks came out staggered. One of the guys had to get his own drink from the bar because the server didn't come around to check on us for quite some time. Overall, I think the food and drink prices at the Foundry are pretty reasonable for the Boston area. The vibe is cool and trendy and I'd recommend it for a friends get together or a casual date night. I have been to Foundry three or four times by now, and it's about time I write a review for a place that I watched as it grew from birth to completion. The bread is always served warm, the butter comes in a little tin cup and is always spreadable, and water comes out from a glass decanter. These are three very important things, without which I would give Foundry a 3.5. The atmosphere is lively, slightly retro, slightly classy, very inviting and friendly, although the staff might get a little too busy from time to time. The quality of the food does not disappoint, although a bit on the pricey side. Wonderful beer and cocktail list. The flatbread pizza was very good and reasonably priced: $10 for one-half to two servings. I had the bacon, potato, and Gorgonzola (see picture). The potato was thin and fresh, the bacon fragrant but not heavy, and the Gorgonzola was not overwhelming. I took the leftovers home, and it tasted just as good cold. (Come on, we all have a thing for cold pizza - right?) The Seafood Tangine ($16, poor John's fish, zaalouk, lemon & vegetable couscous) had an interesting ensemble, but not everything worked. Pieces of lemon rinds were left in, and tasted too bitter and too out of place. The fish was charred black on the outside and white and tender on the inside. Zaalouk is a Moroccan cooked salad made with eggplant, tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and spices, and Foundry substituted squash and zucchini for the eggplant. A little too heavy on the olive oil, otherwise fresh and not bad. The couscous was the most problematic. It simply tasted stale. I'd give this dish 3/5. Do NOT order the Black Lentil Dahl ($15, yogurt basmati, spiced cauliflower, poppadom) unless you want a dry, tasteless rice/lentil salad. The cauliflower is anything but spiced, and the basmati tasted simply like insipid porridge. This is a rather epic fail, and I forced myself to finish 1/3 of the dish before deciding to take it home and add a bunch of tobasco sauce. Because of Foundry's daily specials, I went there mostly on Wednesdays - half off desserts. So far I have had the Pineapple Up-side-down Cake, the Chocolate Lava Cake, and the Bailey Cheesecake. The cheesecake came in a very tasty oreo-like crust but much less sweeter, and the pineapple cake was moist and succulent, although a bit too sweet. The lava cake was solid and not too sweet. So - I'd love to come back to the Foundry and try more of their dishes if my wallet allows me. The cocktails look fantastic. read more

Came here for a little brunch outing, and everything was great start to finish. Laura greeted us and was incredibly hospitable, and did a great job of informing us of Covid practices. The Bloody Mary here is now at the top of my list - perfectly tangy and spiced. We ordered pork belly benny and farmhouse breakfast, both outstanding in every way. On 2 occasions, I went here with buddies to watch the game and have some drinks. On Thurs-Sat nights, forget it. The bar area is elbow to elbow, can't hear yourself talk. If you're looking to hook up, it would probably be great. But for the game with 5 or 6 people in the bar area? I'd go somewhere else. On 2 other occasions, I went with my girlfriend. Once we went for drinks on a saturday, but it was early, around 6. We were able to get 2 seats at the bar, and started drinking all the bartenders favorite cocktails. He was an older than I had expected (not in his 20's/30's) and did/does a great job. He had his own favorites, and suggested delicious ones. We had a blast. Then we went again this past weekend, same time, and he was still there and made some more great drinks. He is a real cool/professional guy. He really knows what he's doing, and you can tell he's very passionate about it. We went in for 1 drink because we were bouncing around, and we stayed for 3. Got crowded on both times by the time we left, but everyone was cool. Foundry does a good job. The professionalism of the staff matches their attire. Foundry came into an already crowded market of Camberville Gastropubs. There are plenty of places you can walk to that fancy up all the bar food and serve it with some imported bottles of beer. That said, Foundry works. It nestled itself squared into the genre and made it work. It has the same forgettable salads and sandwiches that you'd find at any self-respecting tavern, but it excels on the peripheries of the "bar food" Venn Diagram. The spaetzle was texturally delightful, the cheese board was fairly generous and there were hush puppies and a raw bar to enjoy as well. The ambiance and service suggest steakhouse, with servers in clean white shirts and aprons constantly filling water glasses, and red leather booths all over the place. My dinner group dined here on a Friday night and rated it as follows: In summary: Food: 3 people got the steak frites, all were cooked perfectly to order. The ribs were delicious: smoky and sweet. The roasted chicken was well done, and the pork belly with broccoli rabe and polenta was tasty. The burger was overcooked, but the side of brussels sprouts made up for it. Cocktails were good and the beer list was interesting. Service: Foundry on Elm was able to accommodate a last-minute venue change and take our group, so they get points for that. Service overall was efficient; not spectacular but not intrusive, either, though it got a little slow as the evening progressed. Decor: Generally a "good vibe" and "pleasant", and "bustling, busy and packed, the way a bistro should be. And diner comments are below: "The GInger Smash cocktail was outstanding, plenty of booze and lots of fresh mint really enjoyed the Steamed Mussels Appetizer. The meat on my Steak Frites was a perfect medium rare as ordered, the frites however were mediocre, and I wish the side of ketchup was something more interesting. If I was quicker, I would have snuck a piece [my friend's] beautifully grilled brussels sprouts," -- "bustling... noisy... packed. Just the way a bistro and beer place should be. The chicken was done well and the beer list interesting. Bravo." -- "The space was handsome, but they crammed 8 people into a table that could fit 6 at best making dining slightly uncomfortable -- I hate sacrificing my comfort for the Resturants profit. Service was ok, but got slower and less responsive as the night went on. Food was solid, but a bit overpriced For the somewhat meager size, thou my steak was cooked perfectly to order, which is (medium) rare." -- "This was a tasty venture up north to Somerville. I had a very tasty burger, though it was definitely overcooked and the bacon was more or less bacon bits. The bun it came on was delicious though. Trying to be a little more health-conscious, I ordered a side salad rather than french fries. I should have gotten the fries. It was uninspired. The brussels sprouts I ordered were quite tasty and definitely different than other places I've had them. I'm fairly certain they cooked them with a touch of maple syrup, which gave them a little sweetness. It was GOOD! "My only other issue regarding the food is the cocktails. While I enjoyed my cocktail, I am tired of pretentious, hipster cocktail names. "Run Rabbit Run" and "Himalayan Gentleman" aren't cocktail names, they're the names of really bad b-list movies on Lifetime. "I liked the vibe of this place and thought it was definitely a more positive experience than negative. Okay, I don't know if this is a five-star restaurant, but here's a five-star review. Looking for a classy establishment for dinner last week--after Highland Kitchen was too busy--I made a reservation for 3 at Foundry and we were seated immediately, no problem. The décor is reminiscent of Eastern Standard, but minus the throngs of tourists and impossibility of being heard over the crowd at the hostess station. It's the kind of place I would think would serve flips, but, alas, they do not. The extensive draft list makes up for this, however. Jody, our waitress, was a gem. She had tons to share and also answered our somewhat mundane questions (i.e., "What exactly is an 80s cocktail?"). She made some intelligent drink suggestions. And, they offer sparkling or still water on the house, which was nice. Water costs like $.02, so not charging a premium for it was appreciated. The food was delightful. I watched in awe as both of my friends enjoyed the steak-frites, but couldn't have been more pleased that I'd opted for the soft-shelled crab. Of course, we had to try a dessert, so we split the crème brûlée three ways. Yum. We weren't rushed through our courses, but the service was timely when we needed something. So good. Foundry is my local go-to pub, the type of place that's always solid and dependable. I've been in at least 3-4 times a month for the last couple years, and have watched the drink and food menus evolve over that time. Would I like to see some more seasonal additions to the menu? Yes. But, I know that when I order the burger, a pizzetta, or the grilled cheese and soup they'll be exactly what I'm expecting/looking for. Insider tip: When ordering the grilled cheese, I actually sub out the tomato soup for the french onion soup. :) Interesting observation: Foundry does not offer a 50/50 side of fries and salad, it's either fries or salad. Not really sure why... This year, I discovered the Sunday Brunch buffet which is just $20. It's got everything you'd want from a continental style buffet, but with the flavor and class of Foundry. I had the pleasure of getting to know Des at Foundry, a career bartender who recently took his talents to a location in downtown Boston. He was very personable, attentive, and just overall a great person to have taking care of you on the other side of the bar. He made us want to return to Foundry each time, and we were really sad to see him go. Since his departure, and the departure of a couple other bartenders who were there for a long time, the level of bar service has changed a bit. The newer bartenders can be attentive, but their demeanor is different and just not as personable as Des. It's a changing of the guard I guess, but had to give him a shoutout! If you're looking for a cozy place to grab dinner and drinks during a snow storm, or a spot that has their windows wide open into the square on a warm, sunny day, check this place out. read more

I went to Foundry last night for the first time. The interior was beautiful. The music was chill. The drinks were sublime. The food was fantastic. I can't wait to go back for Dollar Oysters! I loved this bar. I can't call it a restaurant because they had very little to choose from on the menu, the only drawback. Will go again soon. read more
