I can HIGHLY recommend staying at the MacArthur Inn if you are visiting or passing thru this area of Virginia. It was really nice to have a very comfortable bed to sleep in AND to have plush towels (not the thin kind you usually find at hotels). Also, as a retired hospital administrator, I appreciated the high level of cleanliness of the hotel. Staff was extremely helpful and friendly too. When you pull in, you will be greeted by security at the front gate. We advised them we were there for the bunker tour and to do some shopping and they gave us a parking pass and directions to the best place to park. The resort is iconic, huge and pristine. We walked our dog around the grounds and up to the main building. Unfortunately, even though they say that the resort is dog friendly, there are some areas where dogs are not allowed. So I waited outside while my husband spoke to someone at the front desk about reserving a spot for the bunker tour. When he returned, I went inside while he stayed out front with our pup. When you walk in the decor hits you all at once and, if you are a Fallout fan like I am, everything just feels so familiar and comfortable. The bold, eccentric colors and patterns, the chandeliers and unique furniture... It's all there. I wandered through the shops which are upscale and fun to browse, even if you're just looking. I bought some giant macarons which were priced incredibly reasonably and really enjoyed them. All of the staff I encountered were friendly and helpful, and even without reservations, we were able to get tickets to the bunker tour. Be advised that they made it very clear to us that getting tickets "day of" is not the standard experience, so I do recommend reserving tickets if you want to do the tour. The vault tour itself is probably closer to four stars, but it's definitely a must. Knowing there was a fully built secret congressional bunker hidden underneath this glamorous resort for decades is wild. You walk through the old dorm rooms and meeting areas and see how it was all set up so long ago. You're not allowed to take any photographs, but I did read some basic information before coming. Still, reading about it and seeing it are two totally different things. It cost well over $100 for the two of us to do the tour and that is before tip so it definitely isn't cheap. It would have also been nice to have more seating, especially for things like watching the video, etc. My feet hurt a little after the tour from standing so long on the hard concrete floors of the bunker. The only reason that we did not end up spending the night is that we really wanted to be inside some of the main buildings and although they do offer dog friendly accommodations, they are only located within certain cottages kind of on the edges or outskirts of the property. There is also a $250 fee for dogs so we decided at the time that it would not be worth it for us, however, full disclosure: we regret that decision. We definitely should have spent the night. It was a once in a lifetime experience for me and if I ever get the chance to come back here I will definitely get a room and stay as long as I can, soaking up the ambiance and anemoia.

We stayed here twice, in the same room actually. It had 2 queen beds, a pull out couch, mini fridge, desk area, and a decently sized bathroom. Our party consisted of 2 adults and 2 children and we had more than enough room. The bathroom was stocked with shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, all in refillable pump bottles. The sink also had hand wash and body lotion. The pool area was kept clean and the staff said we could eat in there at the tables if we wanted. It wasn't a huge area, but there were at least 2 tables and several options for seating. The pool only went to 5 feet and had decent stairs for my toddler in the shallow end. There was also a small gym, complete with some dumbbells, an adjustable bench, treadmill, elliptical, and star stepper, plus a yoga mat and exercise ball. There was a small cabinet which held towels, wipes, and a water dispenser/cups. The only bummer was I saw the same dead moth under the elliptical both stays (2 weeks apart), so I know the gym hadn't been cleaned. Breakfast was decent-- it was the same both both times we had it. They have 3 cereal options, some yogurt and oatmeal, fresh fruit (apples, oranges, and bananas), two types of eggs, sausage, bacon, toast (even a GF bread), bagels, muffins, cinnamon rolls, and a pancake maker. There was also coffee and tea. Everything was served until 9:30. There is always water with fresh fruit out. We ate at two nearby restaurants-- Fat Boy's Pizza and Cinco de Mayo Mexican and both were great! There is also a restaurant list inside the lobby. I felt safe staying here and had no issues in the parking lot. There were only a few other guests during both of our stays. This was a good spot to stay during our travels and I will definitely consider coming back!
