Through the years visiting San Antonio, I've been hoping to find a good place that has excellent authentic banh mi. I was reading through and saw that four kings had such high reviews and although the banh mi's were quite expensive...I figured I would try to see what the high reviews were all about and also not many options around where I was at. The banh mi was just ok... the bread was not as authentic as I wished it to be, it also did not have the pate. I was recommended the tuna sandwich and that was ok as well. Thursday special chicken Bahn mi was NEXT LEVEL GOOD. Used Yelp to find this gem and oh was it worth it. This sandwich was ready within 10 minutes of me calling, was STUFFED to the brim and the chicken was soft moist and was by far the most flavorful chicken I have had at an establishment and the carrots were crunchy, good size with food flavors, the jalapeños on top were also fresh and perfectly hot. We have had lunch here a handful of times. Their soups are very good, sandwiches are really good with fresh ingredients, and the baked goods are about as good as you can get locally. My wife even preordered a purge Oreo cake for my birthday from the bakery side that was excellent! We don't go as often as we would like, but I recommend trying it if you can. Right next door to the Four Kings deli that's been serving up homemade lunch for the past few years, the new Four Kings Bakery features their homemade breads, desserts, and pastries - some things you've seen pass through the deli; others are new. They're newly opened, so they're still working out kinks. I popped in after lunch at Four Kings and many things were sold out for the day. I stopped in on a Saturday morning and found different offerings: potato rolls and foccacia being the main bread items (no pretzel rolls or baguettes); there were donuts and kolaches in the 'breakfast' zone; and of course the triple fudge brownies and assorted other desserts, including, on that day, margarita tarts. Why did I wait so long to come try this place? I finally came yesterday with my daughter and cousin. I ordered a bahi mi sandwich. I have to say it was so good. I was expecting it to be just ok but wow. Wow. It was a amazing. I ate my sandwich and it was so good. My daughter ordered a Greek salad it was fresh and delish. She loved all of it and finished the whole thing on her own. My cousin ordered the Wednesday soup special blue cheese potato soup and he love it. He ate the whole bowl. We enjoyed the art work on the walls. They were beautiful pieces. I'm not sure if they were for sale or not. After we ate all our food I got back up and ordered another bahi mi to go for my husband. We wanted to try the desserts but were too full so we bought them home. Triple brownie, lemon bar and a pumpkin bar. I should of follow my gut and bought 2 slices of the pumpkin bar. When I arrived home I tried to talk my husband out of not eating his sandwich. I thought it would a great dinner for myself but my sweet taking didn't work and he ate the bahi mi all up in front of me. (Ugh). I'm going to have to wait for another day to enjoy another place I can call makes some mouth heavenly foodies. Four kings? A local favorite with lots of awesome sandwiches. But this place is known to have a rocking banh mi sandwich. Parking: the parking lot is huge. Plenty of parking even during peak times. Ambiance: four kings is located in a small strip mall which from the outside looks inauspicious. But upon entering the doors of this business the small shop bustles to life. Super busy during the peak lunch period. You can tell this is a local place with lots of military and people coming in for their lunch break. It feels super homey and each of the tables are covered with clear plastic reminding of a grandma. Price: sandwiches range from 5-8 dollars Service: a nice elderly lady took my order. They take your orders the old fashioned way on a note pad and you pass it on to the cashier. Both where super nice and treated me like family. Food: I was told these sandwiches would rock my world and reading the tips I got the banh mi. This isn't your traditional banh mi with head cheese and pate, but this place puts a nice American twist on a Vietnamese sandwich. The traditional baguette was made in restuarant super nice crunch with a soft inside. The vegetables had a nice bite, with some sweetness, saltiness and some zest from pickling. Each is loaded full of shredded carrots on top and cilantro. The sandwich definitely had more meat than a traditional banh mi a great thing especially when you are hungry. To go along with the banh mi I got the vodoo chips which had me under their spell like a 90s Brittany spears music video on MTV. Such a good combo *I got my sandwich without jalapeños but upon getting my sandwich I noticed one small slice Easily picked it out before consuming with enjoyment. Four Kings is the first legit deli that I actually enjoy frequenting! I couldn't agree more with News 4 San Antonio that Four Kings serves up the best sandwiches in SA! The place is always packed during lunch which is always a great sign. You order at the counter and either Haley or Kelsey are there to take your order with big smiles on their faces! My five star rating is strictly for their outstanding pimento cheese on their house made rolls, it's completely divine! However, the pimento cheese sandy is only a "special" so if you're lucky and see it on their daily menu then get it! Here's the low down on the items I've sampled thus far: *Pimento Cheese: Spicy cheesy perfection, they are incredibly generous with their servings. Take some to-go if you LOVE it, I found myself waiting 2wks before I could reunite with it. *Bahn Mi Sandwich: Huge tender pork chunks with loads of fresh cilantro and HOT jalapeno peppers. This is not the bahn mi you're used to but Four King's yummy rendition. Try it, I was full all day! *Spicy Avocado Turkey Sandwich: Their homemade avocado and cream cheese spread will have your head spinning, I could have eaten the the spread with the roll and would've been content. They put loads of turkey in this sandwich. *Asian Chicken Wrap: This is the first wrap I've ever liked, the sauce and veggies used went perfectly with the seasoned chicken, so juicy. **Tuna Salad Sandy: This was pretty good, it was on the sweet side and reminded me of my toddler years when I would be dragged to an old school baby shower. Soups (ask for a sample before you take the plunge): **Pozole Rojo: A tad on the salty side, you could definitely taste all the chili powder and spices used. Lots of hominy and meat chunks. **Potato and sausage: Oh man this was so good, the broth was excellent and had a cheesy element to it with loads of potato chunks and small pieces of sausage (wish I had more). **Chicken and Dumplings: Meh. I wouldn't get this again, I felt like I was eating chicken pot pie filling with dumpling chunks. The CDumps were still edible but it was a tad on the heavy side. I'm still not done sampling at Four Kings, they even make their own pastas, I love that! Banh Mi (4 Kings' description) Vietnamese 5 spice pork on a baguette, homemade mayo, carrot slaw, cucumbers, julienned jalapeno, and fresh cilantro. So while not "authentic", this banh mi was indeed excellent! The pork was flavorful. The vegetables were fresh and the carrot slaw had a nice amount of acid. Minor gripes: 1) wish the bread was toasted & 2) wish the jalapenos had not been seeded. I like spicy foods. At least, they were able to give me some sriracha. I also had some of Melia's roast beef sandwich on my maiden voyage, which was quite tasty. This past Monday, my husband and I both had off for Presidents' Day and Four Kings was open. So we stopped by for lunch. Hubs had the banh mi. He loved it! I had the curried chicken salad special, which was very good. We also got the soup of the day (some sort of veggie soup with bacon). That was also very good. Only 2 trips in, but it's safe to say that I am a huge fan of Four Kings!!! Definitely looking forward to going back and trying the rest of the menu. I thought I had rated this place before, but I couldn't find my previous review so here it goes. The Bahn Mi is fabulous. It encompasses everything a perfect sandwich should be. It's full, the balance is perfect, the bread is hot and crunchy on the outside... Paired it with an Asian dumpling soup and a lemon bar. If I could've ordered more, I would've... But there's always next time The Asian dumpling soup is the right mix of flavors, perfectly brothy and the dumplings are small and delicious. My lemon bar is enormous and delicious... But I also saw French toast bread pudding in the bakery encasement... no way!!! (I'll have to try that one next time!) Four Kings, I love how your menu is more unique than a standard sandwich shop. Pretty tasty bahn mi sandwich I enjoyed today. The sauce on the pork was a bit too sweet for me, and I enjoyed the contrast of the pickled vegetables. I wish there were more vinegar on the pickled vegetables to offset the sweetness of the pork. The bread was freshly baked and perfect for the sandwich. I paired my delicious sandwich with some Zapps potato chips. Yum. I had the best customer service experience of my life from the young redhead running the register. Because of that tasty sandwhich and great service, I've upped my two star rating--way to go Four Kings. So this place is a lot bigger than it looks, and apparently is a popular place because almost all of the seating was gone. I don't recall what the sandwich of the day was (I think it was the Cubano) but it was popular because the majority of the people ordered it. But it seemed to me that only two kinds of sandwiches were being ordered, whatever that special was and the bahn mi. I ordered the bahn mi and the soup of the day, Tom Ka. The board didn't (at least from what I remember), didn't describe what the soup was, but looking at their Facebook page, it's a Thai coconut chicken soup. The soup was good, had lots of flavor, some serious mushrooms, rice and chicken. The bahn mi. So the sandwich itself is a great portion...not some rinky dink, overpriced sandwich. I can't think of the kind of bread, but it resembled a hot dog bun. The bread was toasted, which sometimes I don't like cause it kills the inside of my mouth, BUT, it was good. The sandwich was full of carrots, cilantro, slaw, jalapeños, and bahn mi meat. So how do I feel about the sandwich? I feel that when you have something (a dish, or sandwich) the meat should be the center of attention...the lead actor. Everything else is supporting cast. But with this sandwich, everything else outshines the meat. The flavor or the carrots was outstanding, and couple that with the fresh jalapeños, it was a flavor burst. But I couldn't taste the bahn mi meat. I mean, I saw myself taking bites and felt the texture of it, but really only tasted carrots, jalapeños and some cilantro. I love a good deli, especially a locally owned one. Four Kings delivers goodness in a lot of ways but, in my opinion, falls quite short in several ways too. I got the good, the bad, and the ugly for ya. Good desserts! Damn good desserts. I didn't even share the Magic Cookie I bought on Saturday. A conglomerate of coconut, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, gram cracker crust, and just creamy goodness holding it all together...mmm! The brownies, cinnamon rolls, and PBJ bread pudding have all been awesome. They look and taste like snapshots from Pinterest. Delicious all the way. Bad sandwich experiences. Every sandwich I've ordered has been just plain and ordinary. I got all excited about a recent special of a turkey sandwich on a croissant with aioli...but then wap wap wap...disappointment. Two lessons were learned from this sandwich....1. Stop getting excited about things on croissants. 2. Stop ordering sandwiches here. On a positive note, the salad that came with the special was great. It had fun stuff on it like artichokes and yellow squash. Yum. :-) Ugly customer service. Maybe it's just me but every time I've been here I feel like the people taking orders are cold and annoyed. Asking questions like, 'Can I substitute the soup for the salad?', and being answered with an eye roll makes me want to walk out. No amount of putting cute hearts on my styrofoam to-go box will correct that eye roll. Four Kings is head and shoulders above the competition in every way imaginable. From their delicious sandwiches which are crafted from homemade bread and include a wide spectrum of quality cheeses and meats to their tomato and roasted red pepper bisque which takes me back home with that first spoon, everything here is GOOOOOD. The service here is what you'd want from a cozy joint like this. They are super friendly and ALWAYS greet people when they come in, make suggestions if you need help figuring out what you feel like and are willing to strike up a conversation if you're in a chatty mood. I love these people. And on the to SWEET TREATS: Let me stress how I'm soooo NOT a brownie guy of all the sweets out there. With that being said, the brownies and butter pecan blondies are out of this world. A must try for anyone with taste buds. Simply put, this place raises the bar for every other place in a 5 mile radius in terms of food quality and service. In regards to the food here, I expected a lot more than what I received. So, here's my short review and points of my experiences here: 1) The customer service was not bad. Nothing impressive, but also no problems. I noticed that the food preparers were not using gloves to touch the food, but as I have seen that in other restaurants in the area, that was not a top concern. 2) The pork and beef used for the sandwiches is fresh cooked, but still has almost all of the fat and gristle remaining on the slices. On sandwiches, this, to me, is very annoying, given that chewy pieces of fat are never appetizing when eating a sandwich. 3) In all honesty, for the quality of sandwiches they serve, they are overpriced. Given my point above about the "fat" on the meat, the sandwiches are about $1-$2 too expensive. Will I come again? Probably not for a couple of reasons: For one, I've had better similar food within a 10-minute driving radius from this location (the "Bahn Mi" sandwich is unique as it is a Vietnamese-style sandwich which I have yet to find in this area, but the fat content has turned me away from getting it again), and for two, my expectations of the food quality here were not met. I'd rather go to the other restaurant if I'm ever craving this type of food again. read more
