Four paws is a joke. They have breed restrictions, but don't require interviews for all breeds. If the manager sees the picture of your dog and thinks they are aggressive based on the perceived breed, they won't let you board. They won't even let you do an interview to see if the dog is friendly. read more

PET OWNERS BEWARE!! Cant give Four Paws Pet Resort (Fredericksburg) a ZERO because the system will not let me. I dropped off my 4 Labs on Wednesday, picked up on Tuesday (because they were closed on Monday). My oldest has a cut on his face. My other three have BURNT PAWS (Vet says from HOT ASPHALT). Not only burnt paws, but one has been shaking ever since we got her home (2 days now). When I went to check out, the staff was short and rude. When asked about Military Discount (they have it posted in a small place), the response was that they could not give it because the CC had already been charged. ABSOLUTLY WILL NEVER BE VISITING THERE AGAIN. read more

We boarded our collie shepherd mix here for nearly a year. She generally enjoyed it and loved the front desk staff. We were relieved to have found a solid boarding option for her. We just adopted a second rescue dog, a sweet terrier mix who is very calm and friendly. We called to schedule his evaluation this afternoon. He was added to our account, not problem, until the staff member asked what breed he is. When I said he was part terrier, the staff member I spoke with informed me that 4Paws has breed restrictions and do not accept any staffordshire terriers, even if they are mixed breed. They won't even evaluate him. This is not posted anywhere on their site, and we're so disappointed that a place that is ostensibly staffed by professionals who work with and lov dogs enforces breed restrictions that are pretty well debunked by now. I'm very disappointed to learn that this is their policy. We won't be spending any more money here. read more

We visited this place for a tour and discussed our senior dog and his insulin requirement. They said this is not a problem, they give insulin to other dogs. The next day, we went to their web site to register and they denied it because now they are telling me they do not accept dogs that require insulin. Apparently, they really do not have a good sense of what services they offer. I do not recommend this place. read more

We've been using Four Paws for several years but I don't think we will return. Our dog recently stayed and I forgot to pack her food and she was fed food that landed her in the hospital for 4 days. The owner was apologetic but I received different answers from him and his staff on what food they provide and was informed by an associate that they purchase whatever is cheapest. I'd happily pay more for boarding knowing they're fed quality food. read more

Negative . Avoid at all costs. No shade for dogs outside. 1 person per 10 dogs is average in daycare situations they have 1 per 20-30 dogs, holidays 1 per maybe 40-50. $20-$30 for my dog to be bathed in Suave human shampoo, no, no, no. I was told dogs come in out of the sun if it gets above 80 degrees, wrong. She was put up in her run at 2pm, stayed there til 7 when someone let her out and back in until morning. Morning comes she goes to a small area, and uses the bathroom on the way, which it sits there for hours before being picked up, flies are everywhere. Flies bring diseases to dogs. Covered in her own feces when I picked her up. I'm not talking a dried turd, I'm talking diarrhea down her legs, all in my car. I wasn't going to pay to have her washed in Suave, but she should have never been brought out to me like that. I can only imagine how long it would've stayed on her if she was there longer. The owner? Piece of work that one, has no business owning a business. Employee at the front was not friendly, a bit on the rude side. I brought my dog her own food to have extra for a lunch, she didn't eat it the first day and wasn't offered the next day (I found out later it was thrown away) NEVER EVEN OFFERED! There are way better kennels out there. read more

I can't recommend this daycare enough! My German Shepherd has serious anxiety and they handle him so well, they are so patient with him and take lots of pics throughout the day so I can see him interacting with the other dogs, which eases my anxiety about his anxiety . I took my Lhasa Apso for day care twice (the trial day and one full day). My little guy seemed happy after the trial so I bought a ten pack. I was excited because he loves to play with other dogs and I thought this would be a great alternative to sitting in the house all day. He returned from his second day care experience a different dog. For one thing, he was filthy. I don't mean a little dirty, I mean filthy. It actually looked like he was rolling in dust because it was matted into his fur. We keep him in a puppy cut and he's not really a rough play type dog so I was very concerned about that. He was also very dehydrated. I talked to the front desk staff to see if there were problems that day and they said that there was nothing noted by the staff. I also commented on how dirty he was and that it looked like he had been rubbed into the ground. They let me know that some dogs do that for fun. As for the dehydration they assured me that water was available at all times. I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt until I took my dog to the dog park the next day and he was aggressive with the other dogs. He was three years old and had NEVER had problems with other dogs. Though I don't have any concrete proof, I think that my dog's experience at the "resort" was negative and traumatic enough to cause a personality change. The facilities are just a rock yard with dirt patches. Maybe that will work for bigger dogs but if you have a small dog, I would look elsewhere. This was a 100$ and negative impact on my dog mistake that I hope others won't make. read more

Why does this place have 3 stars? Michaela is always so nice at the front desk and my dog is always happy to go and never want to come home. I like the fact that they do not crate your dog all day and he can have fun with other small dogs. We have been using Four Paws for our dog Parker for at a year. He is always so excited to go there and loves it there. They always listen to our concerns and keep us informed of any issues while we are away. He gets excellent care, receives lots of love and we never have any concerns leaving him there, whether we are gone overnight or for 10 days. I highly recommend this place if you are boarding your dog. read more

Ok so based on some of the reviews you may be worried about taking your dog to this place. However I'm not sure if it was new management or what but the Fredericksburg location did an amazing job with our two girls. The cost was about 370 for a week. The staff was super friendly and my girls seemed to have had a great time! They slept all the way home which one never sleeps in the car. The place seemed clean and even when I bathed them after they weren't really dirty. The staff seemed knowledgeable on my dogs different temperaments. I am not sure why this place has gotten bad reviews. I will definitely be using them again! read more

Devastating experience. I boarded my lovely 2-year-old Collie at the Fredericksburg, Va four paws pet resort location for one night, May 21st-May 22nd. I noticed she appeared a little tired but they do play outside for 8-10 hours a day. Shortly after being at home (May 22nd), I notice some swelling to her face. The swelling slowly increased. I took her to the emergency room and they said she had been bitten by large dog due to the location of the bit mark on top of her head and under chin. I contacted four paws and made them aware of what had been discovered. The manager, Michelle never returned my call. Later that morning, the swelling became even worse and her spirit had diminished. I took her to the vet who advised she had also been bitten on the nose by something else, a copperhead. I reached out again to four paws and the manager refused to come to the phone. The receptionist relayed to me that a lab mix was playing aggressively with my dog but they considered it to be normal. The own John Maleta contacted me and advised that he spoke with his manager. She failed to report that the dog that Mr. Maleta described as a border collie jump on top of my dog but was removed and my dog was examined by a staff member not a doctor. I was never contacted of made aware of this situation. Two days had gone by. Mr. Maleta advised that the injuries occurred on his watch and he would take care of all medical expenses. He lied. The staff has proven to be negligent and incompetent. Your pets are not safe while in their care. My dog is fighting for her life. She will have permanent scaring. read more

Background on me. I am a positive reinforcement dog trainer. I have been working with a variety of dogs for over 4 years. I also monitor a puppy playtime at my store with about 20 dogs each week. I am very experienced in dogs. I thought Four Paws pet resort was going to be a fun second job. They have a trial 4 hour day where you go in the " play yard" and work for free. I saw this as pointless based on my experience but I did it anyway. Especially since they thought I was so experienced they offered me a management position there. After this review you will understand why I told them " unless they change their ways, I will never work here or refer clients here." I showed up early. They were outside smoking and we could not go in until exactly time to open. They stopped smoking only long enough to get outside to the play yard. When they are handling the dogs they have a lit cigarette or cigar in their mouth. I do not think this is very safe. One of the first questions I was ask was " have you ever been bit?" My response, " only once by a dog that was up for adoption from a rescue group at my store" Next question " how many dog fights have you broken up" My response " none really If you watch their body language they can usually be prevented" Yes I have separated dogs but I would not call them actual fights where a dog could be harmed. I should have had a red flag pop up in my brain and walked away then. I gave them a chance. I entered the "play yard" about 5 dogs at this time. They were constantly yelling at the dogs." off ,back up, get down" Anyone that knows dogs knows the more you talk to them the more they want to greet you. I ignored them. I did not get jumped on once. After all but one dog had went away I bent down to say hello. They started screaming at me " get up your going to get bit" HUH?! The proper way to greet a dog is to, bend down, do not make eye contact and pet them on their chest not the top of their head. I kept my mouth shut for most of the four hours. I scooped poop and watched them rough handle the dogs. If two dogs went to smell they told them " leave it" If they did not listen to them once they said it they proceeded to chase the yelling " come". When they finally cornered the dog and captured it they grabbed the legs, tripped the dog and pinned it to the ground to make the dog " submit because they are pack leader" All of this was due to a dog trying to SNIFF. There is no actual play allowed in the "play yard" Their response to everything was pinning. If a 10 week old puppy nipped them " Pin him" if the puppy did not sit when he was asked to " pin him". You get the idea. While they were chasing the dogs they would run to me. ( never run towards a dog they will run away) I simply lured the dogs into sit and then down and loved on them. They were angered by this. They wanted me to be harsh with the dogs. It is not necessary. They are doing physical and psychological damage to these dogs. The reviews online all said the staff was nice and their dogs were exhausted. This is true. I was fooled by the niceness of the girls at the front. The dogs are exhausted, not from playing but mentally drained from the experience. read more

I went to tour the facility to see if I would be interested in boarding my dog there. This review is based only on a tour! The girl at the front desk was lovely. Helpful, friendly, extremely nice. However, the facilities were awful and I would never leave my dogs there. The facility is in an industrial park. All of the suites and villas are in one large warehouse room with cement floors. The suites are made of varnished plywood and have PVC raised beds in them. The luxury villa is just a larger version of the same low-quality plywood cubicle. The facility is not air conditioned, despite the description on the website. It was uncomfortably warm for me and I don't have a fur coat! The indoor play facilities are separated for large and small dogs. Really, it is just an open area with cement floors where the dogs just run around in the same big room as the "suites". There were no toys, nothing for them to climb on, no flooring other than the concrete floor. I only saw the large dog area but there were some obviously aggressive dogs there. Staff was in the area with the dogs and seemed to have everything under control but the aggression made me nervous. In short, the website makes it look like a pet resort. In reality, it is a bare bones, un-air conditioned warehouse full of dogs. I felt like the website was extremely mis-leading. The staff seemed very caring to the dogs and the dogs I saw did seem happy. I'm sure they receive good care but it just isn't a resort by any stretch of the imagination. I'll be driving my dogs to Richmond to board when I travel. read more

I took my dog to the Four paws in Fredericksburg, VA over the holidays. I initially took my dog there because they sold me on the video of how my dog would be outside supervised for 8 hours a day and then in his own stall at night. Staff was very friendly during check in and they were super sweet to my dog. The day before I was returning to town to pick up my dog I got a call from the front desk girl informing me they were rushing my dog to the hospital. He was unable to stand on his back legs. My dog ended up having slipped disks in his back and went through very extensive surgery and physical therapy. Months later we were very lucky that was able to learn to walk again although he will never be 100%. Four paws called to check on my dog a few days later and did not charge me for his visit. His injury made me question just how well they supervise their dogs when they are outside in the play area. My dog usually just hangs out when he is at the dog park and doesn't run around like crazy so it was just odd that he was injured. When I started to google Four Paws I found some articles about how a small dog had been killed by a large dog at one of their facilties and some people had dogs who came back with minor injuries. I feel horrible that I didnt google the kennel prior. Accidents can happen but like I said I do question how well they supervise the dogs and would suggest you keep that in mind when considering boarding your dog. read more

What amazed me was how immediately they knew my dog and greeted her "by name" each and every time I dropped her off, which began as sporatic visits as I live 40 minutes from this doggie daycare. I now make it a point to go atleast once or twice a week so that my dog can have the Four Paws Resort experience. No appointment necessary for daycare. Very thoughtful staff!! I used Four Paws Pet Resort just this past weekend. I called the week prior a few times to talk to them about boarding. I was nervous because my dog has a few special needs. After talking with them and being assured all would be fine I felt pretty good about leaving her here. I dropped her off Sat. am and was on my way. I called to check on her, all was well. I picked her up on Sun. When I got home and took a better look at her crate (my daughter held her all the way home) it was NASTY! My dog does have accidents so I took four extra blankets to be changed for her. None were used- the same blanket was in the crate and it was dirty. I was so upset. I can't believe someone just let her lay in that. Everyone was very friendly everytime I called and while I was there. However I will never, ever be returning again. read more

I have been taking my dog to four paws for over 3 years. The dogs absolutely love going to dog day care and the staff is always so friendly.

I would never recommend Four Paws to anyone. I had my dogs there for two weeks over christmas and new years and when i got my two dogs back, my hairless chinese crested apparently wore the same sweater two weeks straight and had a horrible rash on his chest and his arm pits as well as caked & baked on dirt and grime all over his body which was covered under the sweater. My dogs were lethargic, dehydrated and sick. They needed immediate medical care and my vet bill was over $600. I contacted Four Paws Pet Resort with a bill of my vet but i never heard back from them regarding the $1200 i paid them neither the $600 of vetbills they are clearly responsible for. I have told a lot of people about the experiences i had with them and i know my comments and story will continue to save others from the same awful experience i have had. Shame on you! read more

My dog had spent a week in a kennel once before so I thought nothing of boarding her over Christmas weekend. The previous kennel was booked solid, as were my other top choices. 4 Paws had decent reviews online so I thought I'd give them a shot. The registration process was simple enough. They were tough to get a hold of for follow-up information, not answering the phone or email for 48 hours. Being Christmas week, I thought nothing of it. 2pm on Christmas Eve I show up with my dog. I hand over her stuff, sign the papers, I'm ready to leave. Their handler comes out with the leash and moves to put it on. My dog growls and begins to show her teeth. Now, the previous time I boarded her we had a similar experience. The staff at that kennel handled her professionally, calmed her down, assuaged my apprehension, and whisked her away for a very pleasant 5-day stay. By contrast, the handler at 4 Paws literally jumped backwards and told me he would not take my dog. I asked him if we could have a minute to calm her down. He refused. I offered to wait in the lobby while he takes her back to see if she would warm up once I was out of sight. He again refused. He explained to me that simply showing her teeth made her too risky to handle. She had not snapped, she had not moved. That single action disqualified her. They left me standing there in the lobby, dumbfounded, at 2pm on Christmas Eve, with no one to care for my dog. I was forced to cancel my holiday travel plans. My children and I spent Christmas boxing up gifts to ship on the 26th. They'll enjoy christmas over the next 5-10 days. 4 Paws' loss is the USPS's gain. read more
