What an amazing experience!…read more As someone with a prosthetic leg, accessibility is something I notice immediately, and I was honestly impressed by how easily I was able to get around the entire campground. I never felt like there was somewhere I couldn't go or something I couldn't participate in--and that alone meant a lot to me. The bathrooms were incredibly clean, the pool was maintained every day and locked at night for safety, and the entire campground was unbelievably peaceful. Even before 10 PM, you could barely tell there were hundreds of people around. Apparently everyone understood the assignment: camping, relaxing, and shutting the hell up at a reasonable hour. The dog park was fantastic, and Watson took his position as campground social director VERY seriously. We probably met 20 dogs over the weekend, and every single one was calm, friendly, and well behaved. Watson now believes we went there specifically for him. I have not corrected him. Every site had its own fire pit, and locally sourced firewood was available right there. The staff even helped load the wood into my car, which was incredibly appreciated. And somehow... NO MOSQUITOES. I don't know what kind of witchcraft is happening there, but please don't change it. The staff were nothing but friendly and helpful, the grounds were well cared for, and I felt comfortable and welcome the entire weekend. I went into this trip a little nervous because it was my first camping experience like this, and I left already planning to come back. Five stars from me. Five stars from Watson, although his rating system is mostly based on the number of dogs available to sniff. We'll absolutely be back.

Auntie Lunkers has 2 waterfront cabins and one chalet that is set back a bit. Our group usually rents all three for a week in August. The cabins are rustic but comfortable and every year there are some renovations, such as screening in the porches a couple of years ago to a split heat/AC unit in the chalet. It is a lot of fun just checking out what changes are made each year. The proprietors are extremely friendly and helpful. Next year I hope to see a ladder back on the dock, it's been missing for the last couple of years and that really helped getting out of the lake. There are several other houses and cabins on this section of the lake, and pretty much every year you can be sure to see a familiar face. There is also a motel at the top of the hill which has been closed for a few years but is opening again soon. The cabins sit on Highland Lake which is pristine. The property has kayaks, and canoes for the patrons use, but you can also rent a boat, jet ski or paddle board from in town and have it delivered to the lake. The town is really quaint with shops and restaurants that we visit every year such as Reny's where you can find anything you could possibly need and more, Bridgton Books which always has the best sellers and a proprietor who is always available for a chat, The Cool Moose which has moved from its former location across the street, and of course Ricky's Diner. For entertainment if you absolutely must leave the lake (which I don't recommend unless it rains) there is The Magic Lantern movie theater and pub. Every Sunday you could travel to Fryeberg for the Community Flea Market where you can find anything from a sword to an antique suitcases. The best time of all can be had sitting around a fire on the lake and looking at the stars with family and friends. If you need to get away from work and the hectic life in the city I highly recommend you grab a couple of books and head to Auntie Lunkers Lakeside Cabins!

We spent lots of time on the large screened porch, on the floating wharf, or on the dock around the chimnea. Mornings were glorious sitting lakeside in the sun or paddling on the calm water. The place was sparkling clean inside and out and came with everything we needed in the kitchen. Nearby restaurants were super fun and super good. Auntie (and Uncle!) Lunkers were wonderful to meet!

The property and house are beautiful, clean and well maintained. Every morning we were able to start our day off right with a great breakfast. You can get a gluten free option if you like. Matt and Lynn were so nice during our stay. Lynn had so many great recommendations of places to eat and things to do. Even when I asked where can I see a moose! We enjoyed all of our time at the inn. My uncle who was in a wheelchair was told to his son in law to park downtown because there was no handicap parking was a disgrace! We stayed in the Robin's Nest cabin, which was clean, comfortable, and well appointed. The wood stove was fabulous and kept us warm in the chilly but mild fall evenings, and I'm sure it would put out plenty of heat for a winter stay as well. We were the only guests on the property, so it was QUIET and so, so serene. I'm sure if other guests were there it would still be both of those things. The cabins and yurts are spread out and hidden in the woods, so privacy is always possible. There was a yoga class on Saturday morning that we missed (we decided to sleep in, too cozy), but I'd love to try that when we return. And we couldn't return too soon. The caretaker Erica had just arrived to take over for the winter, and she was so gracious and friendly. She left us sweet notes and made every effort to make our stay as comfortable as possible. On Saturday we got to use the sauna. The SAUNA. Oh lord, if this lifetime gives me one gift let it be a sauna like that one. Erica went early to get the fire going and we were welcomed to the most beautiful sanctuary with plenty of fresh water for drinking and bathing, some snacks, and flickering candles. We spent a couple of hours moving back and forth from the steamy cedar benches to the woods outside on a rainy evening. It was heaven. Molly the resident cat came and hung out with us several times. She was so sweet and funny, and very polite. If you want her to leave just show her the door and she'll waddle happily down the path. We were sad to leave on Sunday but also so grateful for the time we had together in the Maine woods, and grateful to have found this wonderful spot. A couple of small things...see 5 stars above, these are minor issues, but could be useful to future guests: The grounds are perched onto the side of a mountain, and some of the buildings are separated by steep paths. This means that this place would not be a good option for people who have serious physical limitations (with exceptions). While the website does mention things like "a short climb by foot" it could be more clear about how rugged the site is. For people who live and work there these climbs are a piece of cake, but for others it might be a real challenge. For instance, the Harmony cabin is right next to the yoga studio and group space, so that would be ideal for those looking for accessibility. But if you wanted to take a shower, it's a *steep* hike up to the Pioneer cabin where the showers are. Just something to keep in mind if you or someone in your party might need accommodations. Also, one comfortable reading chair in the cabin would be a big bonus, especially for longer stays. The rocking chair in the cabin is TINY, neither my husband or I could sit in it comfortably. Overall, Nurture though Nature is a wonderful place and you will feel blessed to spend some time there. We can't wait to return!
