This year I was convinced to join another couple families for their yearly trip to On the Saco Campground and I'm glad I did. It's not a huge place, but it's very well kept and VERY clean. No smelly outhouses or grimy bathrooms, both were maybe a little rustic but in good working order and again, very clean. My site was tree lined giving plenty of privacy, nicely mowed and had a fire ring. I don't know if they employ some kind of mosquito management but for a wooded site about 80ft from water, I didn't get one bite over my 3 night stay. There's a little store with pretty much any essential you may have forgotten for sale, small game room, washer/dryer, and dishwashing area. You can rent tubes and canoes, (I did both) and the staff is super friendly and helpful, (especially when we got caught in the rain and they came to pick us up earlier and at a different location than intended). They had some kind of activity everyday, I saw face painting one afternoon by the office, there was a glow stick parade one night, corn-hole tournament the next, and a movie night the third. A lot of Saco campground are shitshows, (I'm talking about you Fiddlehead!) full of wasted college kids, this place IS NOT THAT. If that's what you want, keep moving. However, if you're looking for a clean, friendly place that is definitely family friendly and a more peaceful but still fun experience I'd recommend On the Saco Family Campground for sure.

We keep to ourselves and aren't (usually) crazy partiers, so we decided to come after the season died down on a tuesday/wednesday. We asked for a more secluded site and got put on the most crowded beach. We found that a little strange, but ended up finding a nice somewhat secluded spot for the group of us to set up. The location overall is great, thats where the stars are coming from. Other than that it's mostly negatives from me. We all agreed that their bracelet policy was a bit much. Once you check in you aren't allowed to take off your bracelet until you check out. Seems like a bit of a hastle to be driving around town with neon bracelets on, to me that's just screaming "pull me over I'm a tourist!" The beach was scattered with trash and broken glass. We found a huge chunk of glass maybe half a bottle in the river that easily could have lacerated someone's foot. We also came a few days after the weekend, and at the end of the season so you would think that the beach would be at least somewhat scanned for trash, but no. We've been on the saco quite a few times and have never seen a section dirtier than this camp. They lock their gate at night around 9pm which definitely poses a safety concern. What happens if you step on glass and need stitches, or someone has some type of medical emergency during the night and you can't get out because the gate is locked? Overall it's not a place to bring kids. They have idiotic policies (bracelets, the gate) yet they don't have a simple "no glass bottles on the beach" policy. Everyone who lives anywhere near the coast knows it's not exactly kosher to bring glass bottles on a beach, and if you do everyone looks at you like you're a D-head. Put in your research, know what you're getting yourself into, don't bring kids (or glass bottles!) and you should have at least an okay time.

He mentioned several times on the phone that quiet is at 10pm. He even said it again at check in. That was exactly what we were looking for. Unlike the other viewer we found the campground just fine and I have found most campgrounds hard to navigate at night so we try to arrive during the daylight hours. The site was pretty nice size wise and I thought a fair price. When we checked in Paul handed us a roll of TP as they have had probls with people clogging up the toilets. I can understand that. So the first night we are up til about midnight around the fire talking quietly. We notice that the folks behind us are getting louder and louder. We shout a few be quiets but they go unnoticed. Finally at 2:30 am I phone the manager who does not answer. The drunks go to sleep finally around 3:30 am. I hunt down Paul the next morning and tell him what happened. He apologizes and offers us a refund and assures us tonight will be different. So around midnight the next night Paul comes over with a flashlight and says hello and assures us that he is on patrol. All is well until around 2am and the drunks start up again. The only diff tonight is that there is no spanish music playing. I text Paul but in his trailer with the ac on I doubt he can hear me. Finally at about 3am I get out of my tent and walk over and well go ballistic on them. Sleep deprivation must be a big trigger for me. I am normally the most non confrontational person. I was so upset after going over there it took me another 2 hours to get to sleep. At least my anger made my body temp higher (it was 45 degrees!) I find Paul the next day and he can't believe they did this again and he is going to boot them out (though they were prob leaving Sunday anyway) and he is moving us to a river view site. Paul also hands us a coupon for free 3 nights of camping. As we are up packing up that morning for the move the rude neighbors feel the need to blast their stereo as they are packing. Rude doesn't describe this group. Our new site is awesome, we have normal neighbors and that night we get to sleep! Paul and his family are a great group of people and I feel that they will get this campground to be a great place. Re the bathrooms. Cold showers are free, hot showers are $2 and you need to find someone to turn that part on I think. I think all in all the sites were very nice and its a no frills campground which is what I wanted. The river was nice and I only saw people rafting or kayaking down it and all were well behaved. On a weekend night I am not sure how quiet the river sites would be as the campground across the river is wild from what I hear. I am looking forward to going back again and I really do feel that Paul and his family will get this campground turned around.

Not only is the location great, the owner, Matt is absolutely fantastic. The hiking all around the yurts is perfect for kids and we find so much to do. If we were feeling cooped up and wanted to go out Brownfield is so close to great hiking, skiing, and paddling we could easily do that, but we have not wanted to leave the yurts. Matt, the owner is so fun and personable. He really cares about his customers and worked with us when we needed to reschedule repeatedly. I have stayed at other yurts in Maine before, but never more than once. Frost Mountain Yurts will always be my favorite spot. Logistically know that it is very easy to get to your yurt. The trails are very well marked and the sled or cart you use is big and it's really nothing to get there but then you feel completely secluded. Mountain View Yurt is the only one that has felt a little far, but the view is totally worth it. The outhouses are super clean and the yurt is very clean and cozy. There is an option to have Matt warm up your yurt for you upon arrival and I totally recommend that in the winter.

We stayed at the "Mountain View" yurt, which is about a half mile walk along a nice trail. They supply you with carts in the non snow season and sled during the snowy season. If you are going to see a show at Stone Mountain Arts Center, it's the perfect, nearby spot to stay. At this point I've been to Frost Mountain 4 or 5 times. We've done the romantic version, where you see a show and then go back to the cozy, warm yurt. The kid version, where you pack the yurt full of children and let them run around in the woods during the day. And the group version with adults, where you drink and play cards by fire light. Each version of our stay was perfect and I can't wait to go back! Highly recommend!

The sites are huge, the people are friendly, and they have great facilities. The bathrooms and the showers make the camping experience a pleasure. They also have ice and firewood guys that come around in karts and drop them right off at the campsites for a very nominal charge. The sites are spacious, a little lacking in privacy, but very nicely maintained. On Saturday nights they also have Live music, which can be heard at the campsites closeby, or, if you'd like, you can go right up and enjoy with a crowd of people. Great campsite to enjoy the Saco River, although it's definitely not the best camp site for families; however, it's not loud and crazy like many other Saco campgrounds. It's a great in between option.

Didn't bother us at all, but could potentially be obnoxious for families with young kids.

She stopped to asked the locals where to find moose and spoke endlessly about the types of trees in NH. No moose were spotted at all even after a desperate mosquito infested walk through the woods (yes, we had bug spray but it didn't make a difference). We were told "plan B" was to drive up and down the same highway at midnight to see if the moose were out. This was a surprise for my husbands birthday, It was a surprise for both of us! This was a complete waste of time and money.

Lucy met us in the morning and we went straight to the river. It was such a gorgeous and enjoyable ride and she was so pleasant and relaxed the whole way through. She gave us some simple tips on kayaking and also some nice information on some of the wildlife and history of the area. When we reached Lake Ossipee the wind was very strong which made the lake very choppy and her lead was so assuring in the challenge that lay ahead of us - she was awesome and we made it to the other side of the lake without any issues whatsoever.
