I threw the "leaky" FrameStore frame away months ago and finally brought the piece to a different framer today. The backing FrameStore put on the piece was still attached and the new framer was pretty horrified by the quality of the backing. Poorly done, uneven, and poorly matched to the piece. Also when I described the "leaky" frame they said it sounded like termites. Also the new framers are charging less than half of what FrameStore charged us, (BEFORE they charged us again to fix their work. Which was still awful.) read more

So I filled in my details on their website to get a 50% off discount, which seems to be simply a method to get your contact details so they can call and even text you. I spoke over the phone to a woman who seemed reluctant to give me a quote over the phone. After some convincing, she told me the price for framing a relatively small 20cm x 23cm piece of art would be a little under 200 dollars for museum quality glass. I said I would be in in a few days with the art. Yesterday I got a text saying the cost would in fact be 250, which seems very high, and a work order had been set up. When I pointed out that the price seemed high, I got a breakdown, which didn't seem terribly scientific. I replied fine, I would simply apply my 50% off discount. The response was the discount had already been applied. I replied does that mean without the discount the cost for this relatively small piece of art would be around 500 dollars. I got no response. These interactions left a bad taste in my mouth. This all seemed quite dishonest. I will not let them frame the art so I don't know how good the actual quality of their work is. But their salesmanship is dreadful. read more

I am skeptical about their 50%-off coupon. We had a 20" by 30" oil canvas that we brought in for custom framing. We have had many frames over the years, some of them this size, and even when done in koa with many elements, the price was never more than about $400 for a painting this size. With the help of the art consultant, Maria (whom we liked and respected), we decided on a narrower hardwood frame than we're accustomed to along with a half-inch filet and were surprised to be told that would cost close to $800. When I asked if this included the 50% off, I was assured that it did. I expressed great surprise that their "real" price must have been around $1600 for this frame -- far far more than we are used to with far superior frames from Hawaiian framers (and the cost of living there is comparable to LA). Against my better judgment, we accepted the price because we were too busy to comparison-shop, a big mistake on our part. We had other disagreements and dissatisfactions with the work but I'll restrict these remarks to the price. Basically, I don't understand how framing a 20" x 30" oil painting can cost $1600, which must be their full price before their 50% coupon is applied. Even at the asserted 50% reduced price of $800, the cost is, IMHO, too high. I regret this negative appraisal, primarily because Maria has a refined artistic sense and was very pleasant to deal with. read more

Highly disappointed with my experience with this store. I found this place by accident when I was furniture shopping in Culver City. I wish I had read the reviews in advance. I chose a frame and was told I would have my art 2 weeks later by 9/11. I paid the $400+ for my frame and was looking forward to getting my art. I didn't hear from anyone by 9/11 so I called and inquired and they said there was a hold up but I should have it by 9/13. On 9/13 I was told the frame I had chosen was no longer available. Now why did no one tell me any of these at any point in the last 2 weeks or when I called on 9/11? Not only had I already paid for it but I couldn't even come to pick up my art and take it to a different store because it was "at the studio". It feels like my art is being held hostage. The service: great. The craftsmanship: great. The end product: beautiful. The price: way higher than I expected! Let me explain - The vintage movie poster that I got framed is only 12" x 14". I selected a simple low-profile matte black frame and standard glass (not UV protection, not Museum glass, etc.). Basic - no frills - nothing special. I was even informed that I happened to select the least expensive frame in the store. I came equipped with a $100 Groupon and still had to pay out of pocket! It seemed a bit unreasonable to me since I had a similar framing done at a different frame shop with comparable quality and service and the total only came to about $55. Went there to order a custom frame for a 8x10 photo. The person there insisted I look at the premade frames. She told me the custom frame were expensive. This right after I said I was interested in a custom frame. I ended the conversation at that point and politely left the store. I felt her implicit bias towards us disappointed me. Never done it, don't know anything about it, I just wanted my photos and posters to look nice, and be framed at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, my photos and posters had very irregular sizes. I anticipated it to be very expensive. Maria did her absolute best in finding the most affordable frame and got everything within my budget. I was helped promptly and she guided me through the framing process, thoroughly explaining my different options for each piece. On a side note, I'm a bit surprised by the melodramatic negative yelp reviews here. Either I'm so clueless to the framing business and what I should be expecting, that any irregularities or non-typical framing business practices went right over my head, or the other reviewers are just negative people....Well, I suggest you do your homework, while a few folks possibly caught the framestore on a bad day, the other bunch seem to have a negative outlook for most businesses they review. Finally, it appears that the majority of 1-star reviewers were looking for extremely cheap frames. Considering the FrameStore exclusively does custom frames, of course they were SOL. Do not use these people unless you want to be ripped off. I simply needed a picture to have a mat around it so we could use it for our guest sign in at our wedding. ALL WE NEEDED WAS A MAT! No frame, no anything else. I suppose I can take the blame for being such a sucker and also wanting it the next few days but get this.... On the invoice it has Material - $523.42... this is for a white Mat. Labor $104.31 - for someone to cut the mat. Retail total $627.73. She offered a discount on this ridiculous retail price. So the total was $345.00 FOR A MAT!!! You know ...the cardboard mat that frames a picture. We had to have it for our wedding so I acquiesced, but they did not have it at the store as promised, and when I got it I realized what a fool I had been. Yes, it was just a mat that wasn't even properly taped on. We had to finish the project ourselves. I have a small business and I would be utterly embarrassed and apologetic to over charge a customer this egregiously. We had to pay $345.00 for a cardboard mat. If anyone has suggestions as to what recourse I can take to get refunded and pay what this was really worth please let me know. I was a fool but you do not have to be. ABSOLUTELY the worst ripoff I have ever experienced. How can a small business owner think that is is even remotely the right thing to do? They should be ashamed of themselves. Yes, buyer beware... so, I tell you now... don't even walk into this place. They just stole money from me as if I was held at gunpoint on the street. I will do all my framing here in the future, because Chuck, the owner and Maria were so amazingly helpful to me, right before the holidays with a special retirement gift for my dad. The guys who work here seem very nice and definitely want to help you. However, the cost is unbelievable - WITH a groupon for $100, it still cost me over $250 out of pocket for one frame. I put in my order at the beginning of July, and it's still not done. Not once did I receive a phone call about my frame. The frame was supposed to be complete around or before July 12. When July 12 came and went, I called the store to find out the frame we had chosen was not the right type for what I was having done, so the people building the frame sent my stuff back to the store. Fine, everyone makes mistakes, but I should have gotten a phone call at the very least. On the phone they were very nice and said that they would upgrade the frame with no extra cost to me, and it should be ready in 2 weeks. Well, that 2 weeks has come and gone again, and still no call. I called the store today and the person I talked to was apologetic, but was unable to provide me with any answers. The cost of the frame and frustration of it taking forever with no phone calls from the store is not worth it at all. What I'm having framed is one-of-a-kind and I would love to know that it's safe and being framed properly but at this point, I have no idea what's going on. Also, you don't NEED an appointment, but I recommend if you do want to get framing done here, you make one. When I went in there was one person ahead of me, and the guy behind the counter told me it would be at least 45 min to an hour till he could help me. read more

I recently relocated from LA and have about 20 pieces in total to frame for my home and office, so I decided to start by bringing one or two pieces each to a few different places. Frame Store in Culver was the first on my list because it's very close to my office and they advertise 50% off in the window. I brought in a lithograph approximately 18x40. The upside here is the craftsmanship and quality of the finished piece is fantastic... But, there are a few downsides: 1) I waited an hour for service when I went in. They only had one employee and she was extremely slow with the customer in front of me and took an hour to work out two jobs. In hindsight, I should have left and come back. Once she helped me, it took 30 minutes to have her write it up and she kept trying to talk me out of exactly what I wanted. 2) Even with their "50%" advertised discount, the final price is much higher than than the other places I have since tried out...(I will review those places soon). The piece cost $363. w/ UV glass but not museum/art glass and the two other shops I tried framed larger pieces using conservation materials including museum glass for $250-300 per piece. This tells me they are significantly inflating the cost of materials before "discounting" and overcharging for labor. 3) They did not call me when the piece was finished...I called a week after the quoted ready date and the guy on the phone couldn't find my order then asked me what it was, I described the piece and he said "oh that's been on wall for a week and everyone loves it." Sure, it feels good to know people like my art, but one would think they would call the customer when something is ready to come get it. All in all, there are much better places in town who have better service, do higher quality work and offer lower prices. read more

I have professionally framed many things over the years and I know that custom framing is expensive, but the prices at this place are RIDICULOUSLY high and a rip off for what you get. Although the quality is fine, you can get comparable good framing at around half the price elsewhere. It was especially offensive because they have 50% off signs in the window. FrameStore on Washington Blvd is THE BEST! I came to them with a large request from my boss to create 5 shadow boxes for 5 props from a film with a pretty tight deadline and they pulled it off with flying colors. In short: the prices are wildly inflated and the coupons are irrelevant. I put in a custom order for an item the size of a postcard. The final size of the frame plus matte was 9" x 10.5." The total cost: $255. (I wanted a floating matte, but this is exorbitant by any standard. I'm used to ordering from Americanframe.com and doing my own framing so I know what things should cost. I couldn't do it for this job because ironically the size of my item was too small/not worth the vendors cost.) I thought the price would be discounted by a 50% off coupon I received by email, but I was told by the sales assistant (who was uninformed, overwhelmed and had to call FOUR supervisors/managers in order to respond to my request) that I had "already" received a discount. She pointed to a line on the invoice that said "EDLP" (every day low price) and said I got a $25 discount, so the discount on my coupon was already applied. The coupon reads "50% of TOTAL custom framing order" NOT "50% off price of frame, which is already supposedly discounted regardless of whether you have a coupon." The $25 off is barely 10% of my "TOTAL custom framing order." The sales assistant informed me the price of my custom order is the same with or without the coupon, which begs the question, what is the point of the coupon? This leads me to believe their coupon promotions are simply a false marketing tool which doesn't result in any actual savings. I am very displeased with their in-store customer service as well as the truth/clarity in their promotions. read more

I had two items framed here. One of the items was being re-framed because the first framer did it cheap, but the quality was very poor. The second item was a painting that had belonged to my parents and needed retouching and restoring. Maria put me in touch with a restorer that did a great job.
