Got my hair cut twice here by two different barbers. First time with Frank was best the best of the two cuts. The second time with another gentleman who didn't introduce himself barely trimmed my hair after I asked for short on the sides. Mentioned that I was getting married in a couple days and he didn't seem to care. Badly needed another haircut in 3 weeks. Guess he's trying to keep the chair full. ***** TY IS AN ARTIST - BEST HAIRCUTS EVER! ***** I've had four GREAT haircuts at Frank Pisa Barber Shop by Ty (his chair is right in front of the TV). Technically this review is for Ty more than the shop itself because what can I say... it's a barber shop. Fun atmosphere and great for everyone. As a matter of fact this is the kind of place I can see a dad and son coming in together for their regular cuts. Ty: Every cut I've gotten has been during my lunch hour and when I go back to work no one immediately notices that my hair was cut. Let me explain... there is no question that my hair is shorter but it's just blended and trimmed perfectly and the transitions are really subtle. Ty spent as much time if not more working on my neck and hairline over the ears and around the back as he did on the top of my head. My neck is absolutely perfect when I leave the shop! An old school barber shop with vintage barber chairs, magazines and sports memorabilia on the walls. A regular came in as I was in the barber chair, you could tell he was a regular by how he and the barber started throwing friendly insults at each other, it reminded me of how mush fun it was when my Grandpa took me to the barber shop when I was young. Came in because of a bad haircut received a few doors down at Great Clips by Dennis. I asked if he could "fix this" He did his best and fixed it. When my husband came home with his new haircut, he said "Is it really that bad". My reaction "Oh, wow" and bit my tounge as hard as I could. All I could think of was in that movie the barbershop when the kid messes up the mayors hair. We agreed we needed to yelp this place. When my hubby was in High School and several years after, he would go there for a Hair cut...sweet and simple. His regular barber/stylist is out right now but he needed a cut fast and didn't have time to contact her, so he thought he would go back to Frank J. Pisa's. Hands down the worst hair cut EVER! There was a middle aged barber who cut his hair (the name escaped during the anger). My husband specifically asked him for a "fade, a low fade and DON'T touch the top". The barber agreed he could it, no problem. What does the barber do...takes his shaver and cut the top. Then he dug a patch into the side of his head. It was so bad that the younger barber (again in anger the names escapes) had to come in and salvage the haircut. Even the younger barber said it wouldn't be a low fade due the damage that was already caused. Needless to say the haircut was free and someone needs to retire. read more

I'll start with the pros: Nice old school barbershop, colorful crowd, blue-collar jokes and conversations. Pleasant staff. Ambiance is just what you might expect from an Italian American barbershop. It sort of feels like you're at a harbor, surrounded by dockworkers. As such, they don't take appointments, only walk-ins. The decor is quaint, and brings up feelings of nostalgia (which is weird, since I'm neither Italian American, nor have I grown up around any dockworkers). Ultimately though, you feel like you're in for a great haircut. The cons: You don't get a good haircut (or at least I didn't). Frank seemed like he might be a ridiculously good barber, especially with all those years of experience, and newspaper clippings on the walls. I didn't need a complicated haircut; I just wanted to get my hair cut short on the sides and back, and trimmed on top. Yet, he cut it so unevenly (I didn't really notice until I got home, and tried styling my hair), and it wasn't through lack of effort. Frank was friendly, and he was definitely taking pride in his work, but at the end of the haircut, all that matters is the end result. I don't really know what else to say. I suppose it's because the customers I saw here didn't seem very... fashionable? well-groomed? If all you want is to get your hair cut, without a lot of concern for how slick you'll look afterward, then this place is fine. It's not like the prices are a rip-off, so I got what I paid for (cash only, by the way). For the rest of the week though, I had to use a lot of hair wax to try and hide the damage, and make sure I didn't look like a jackass at work. I eventually got my hair fixed up at Binh's Family Hair Care, down in San Mateo, and they did a great job. read more

Nice barber shop, seems great. I even had a decent haircut here. Cons The last time I went here I had the worst haircut I was ever given. I left the place feeling good and then I looked in the car mirror. I had a patch of hair missing from above my ear! They literally shaved an inch around my ear, to the skin! I went back and they offered to fix it by shaving of a patch of hair on the opposite side. I took a picture and posted it on Facebook, I've never had more comments. This is a great barber shop, it use to be my father's barber shop until he passed away last July. Told my son and husband about this place. The barbers are funny and good personality all at the same time, plus the price can't be beat at $ 14.00 each. Plus, which is great for me, they do lady's hair too, as long as you come to the nephew of the owner on Tuesday all day from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Since I have been going there for 7 months now and always my hair cut is perfect and always great comments by friends and family and people that meet. I was extremely impressed with this barber shop. Walking into Frank J. Pisa's is like taking a step back in time to when cutting hair truly was a class-act. The decor is classic, with retro barber chairs, sports memorabilia from several decades lining the walls, and magazines and other reading material in the magazine rack to pique any man's interest. (They even had a "New Hairstyles of 1965" magazine that amused me greatly. I considered getting a do from there.) The staff is friendly and know what they're doing, but more important than that, they are really interested in getting to know you and establishing a great rapport. Nearly everyone who walked in the door while I was waiting was greeted by name by at least two members of the 4 person staff working that day. The piece de resistance: using a straight edge razor at the end of my haircut to clean up my neck. All of this for a mere $14? I'm sold. Frank has been there forever, as his dad started the biz like 60 years ago or something in SF, before moving to the peninsula. Anyhow, friendly atmosphere and decent cuts. Frank is a solid barber, and his uncle Fred who's about 89 years old is actually the best of the bunch, so don't let the age fool you. There's another guy Dan, who's ok not great, and a younger kid with big porkchop sideburns that I don't care to try out. There's a lot of 49ers memorabilia all over the walls and Frank is one of the friendliest people you can run into, so it's a great place to bring your boys if you have kids and are looking for a good barber. Don't expect any "styling" to take place though if you're particular about your hair in any way. They have two basic haircuts: Short and Medium. I laugh when I hear people try to throw out a lot of detail and get that lesson thrown at them. Bottom line: solid, but not spectacular. read more

This is a barber shop the way you want your barber shop. This place is two things: good value and good service. It's a classy, simple place where you'll get a great haircut, a straight razor neck shave (who else still does that?!), and the occasional familiar insult from the proprietor after he gets to know you. I stick with Frank and the (now) lone young guy in the shop because they know what I want, but the other guys are great too. This is a family shop and even though it's hidden away in a breezeway, they always do a brisk business because once someone goes in, they won't go anywhere else. I brought my dad, father in law, and groomsmen here the morning of my wedding to get straight shaves. I talked to them in advance and they said they don't take appointments so get there right when they open. We did and there were still 3 people already there but we got it all done. The memorabilia is nice and the guys know what they are doing. Luckily all 3 guys could do a straight shave which is not true of all barber shops. I had to ask to get my sideburns trimmed more but I think he should have asked me before finishing. The best part was the price. They were by far the cheapest straight shaves. I went there for a straight razor shave. I should have gotten up and left when the barber started off shave by using an electric shaver on me. When I protested --he told me the electric shaver provided a closer shave than a straight razor- I knew I was in wrong spot. But I did not want to make a scene. read more

I came in for a haircut because they do walk ins. I asked for a simple fade 5 on top 2 on the sides. Very easy cut for any barber. The guy totally butchered my hair. Not only that, but when I told him what I wanted corrected he wasn't cooperative and dismissed it as nothing wrong. I saw that there was a big long patch on the side he wouldn't listen to my wishes to correct it. Poor customer service, unprofessional, and downright not qualified to cut hair. Your better off going to great clips or super cuts if not an actual men's barber shop that is qualified. read more

I was tired from a stressful week in the office. I wanted to relax with a shave and went to this place to get one. It was a pretty bad experience overall. The blade wasn't too sharp. I kept telling him that it hurt and he just kept apologizing for cutting me. I never had so many cuts on my face when I was done. My face was burning pretty bad for a couple of days afterwards. Very hit or miss, depending on which barber you get. And even by "hit" i'm talking about just average. When you walk in you feel your about to get something nice, with it's old fashion ambiance and local feel to it. But really you end up with either a very uneven hair cut or a very basic hair cut. Most of their costumers are well above 50, so it's not exactly the slickest place to go. Im not saying I cut my hair in some crazy fashion, but they honestly cut your hair as if your in your 70's. If that's your thing, then go for it. Just don't aways expect it to be the same. read more
