Between my grandfather and I, we had six watches needing repair. Did my research and wanted to support small business. Found this shop. Called to ensure he would be open if the current pandemic situation. Answers the phone with simply "hello". Is this the Watchmaker Specialist?", I ask. "Yes." I then asked if he would be open the next day to drop by with the watches for repair. "No problem. I will be here" he responds. "Excellent. See you tomorrow." Today (the next day), I picked up my 89-year old grandfather to drive 25 miles to his shop. Arrive to the office building, then had to had to show my driver's license to a security guard. It has to be shown to a video camera where they take a picture of your license. Was not crazy about that given identity fraud. But had to do it to gain access to the building. Made our way up to the 7th floor, found the suite, only to find the office locked. Sign on door says call the number. So I do this and again, simply "hello". I let him know we were standing at the front door. "Who's this?", he asks. "A customer" i replied. "Oh, I am not there. I went to get some dinner. Can you wait 30 or 45 minutes?"........ So he wanted my grandfather and I to simply hang out and wait for him. Not very good customer service especially after I called beforehand to verify it was good to come down at that time. Which it was. But he left us in the lurch. We went someplace else. Was not a goid customer service experience.

These guys installed a new battery within minutes. Because they have a great reputation for watch repair, I also left my 30-something-year-old Tag Heuer in their care for a total rebuild. This was a wedding gift, and it is the most prized watch in my collection. The watchmaker here did an excellent job, and even did a pressure test, which is vital -- but not commonly offered with many watch repair services. They offered to replace the band with an in-house version and ultimately a Tag Heuer version, but I declined because I can replace it for a lot less money. I was also hoping they could replace the dial to no avail. Still, these folks know what they are doing, and I plan on giving them plenty of business moving forward.

They told me they needed to get parts that aren't generic parts and I was good with that. They called me when they said they were ready. After returning the watches something like 4 trips for each one they are still not keeping accurate time. I had to just wait and come by when I thought they may have been done with the watches because they would not call me when they were ready. I went there thinking an old watch repair place could fix an old watch. Apparently, they cannot. After spending a few hundred dollars there I am looking for another repair shop for both watches. When this happened a year prior, I took the ring to a major diamond retail store and was quoted $150.00 to replace the tiny diamond, and replace it's setting. I paid the amount and had my ring repaired. The lady asked if I wanted the "coating" replaced - I asked if it was necessary; she told me "no" but sometime in the future I would need it done. Fast forward to last week. Another one of the tiny stones fell out. I took the ring back to the same major retailer. After examining the ring, they told me that ALL of the tiny stones were in jeopardy of falling out - like dominoes. They said that one of the stones in the "halo" part of the ring was also in jeopardy of falling out and they would ALL follow - again like dominoes. They said as part of the repair I would HAVE to re-coat the ring in what I now know is "rhodium." The grand total was $380.00. I left the store in a daze of sticker-shock. I Googled and Yelped a jewelry repair store right around the corner from my house - League City Gold, Diamond, and Fine Jewelry. I met with one of the owners, Cheryl, who examined my ring. I told her what the previous store said HAD to be done to repair my ring. After examining it, Cheryl said she could NOT see what they were talking about, but would run the ring through a machine that will "jiggle" to test for loose diamonds. She said if anything fell out, they would put the stone back and repair its prong. When I asked about the coating, she said that rhodium is REALLY expensive ($25,000 per ounce!) and that is where retail stores like to "upsell" is by recommending the coating. I asked Cheryl what she thought my drive out price would be - she said $125.00!! That included if they had to repair any prongs AND that included re-coating the rhodium. (Cheryl also educated me that there is no such thing as "white gold" - only yellow gold coated in rhodium, which wears off with regular wearing of the jewelry.) I picked the ring up from Cheryl this morning (which was only 2 days repair time). She said they had put the ring in the "jiggle machine" for OVER 2 hours and not one additional stone had fallen out! When I asked my total price she said $67.00 - and that included rhodium coating!!! Folks, if you are looking for an HONEST local jeweler and one that does REASONABLY priced repair work - I would highly recommend League City Gold, Diamond, and Fine Jewelry!!
